Cancer is considered a cause of type B hyperlactatemia in dogs. However, studies evaluating cancer as a cause of clinically relevant type B hyperlactatemia (>2.5 mmol/L) are lacking. Cancer cells have a higher lactate production because of increased aerobic glycolysis, known as the 'Warburg effect.' The mechanisms through which aerobic glycolysis occurs are not well elucidated, but neoplasia may cause type B hyperlactatemia via this process. To determine if malignant tumors of dogs are associated with clinically relevant type B hyperlactatemia (>2.5 mmol/L). Thirty-seven client-owned dogs with malignant tumors: 22 with hematopoietic and 15 with solid tumors. Histology was used to confirm the diagnosis (cytology was considered adequate for diagnosis of lymphoma). Confounding conditions associated with hyperlactatemia were excluded. Lactate measurements were immediately performed on free-flow jugular whole blood samples using the LactatePro analyzer. All dogs had lactate concentrations <2.5 mmol/L. Mean blood lactate concentration was 1.09 mmol/L. Mean blood lactate concentrations for solid and hematopoietic tumors were 0.95 and 1.19 mmol/L, respectively. Dogs with lymphoma (n = 18) had a mean blood lactate concentration of 1.15 mmol/L. Malignant tumors were not considered a cause of clinically relevant type B hyperlactatemia. Therefore, cancer-related type B hyperlactatemia in dogs is uncommon, and hyperlactatemia should prompt careful investigation for causes other than cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Glucocorticoids affect carbohydrate and lactate metabolism. Hypothesis: Administration of prednisone to healthy dogs will result in clinically relevant hyperlactatemia. Animals: Twelve healthy adult Beagle dogs. Methods: Prospective, controlled experimental study. Twelve healthy adult Beagles were divided into 2 groups (3 of each sex per group). One group served as control. The other group received 2 treatments: low, 1 mg/kg prednisone PO q24h for 2 weeks; high, 4 mg/kg prednisone PO q24h for 2 weeks. A washout period of 6 weeks separated the treatments. Blood samples were drawn for whole blood lactate measurement on day (D) 0, D4, and D14 and measured in duplicate. Results: Compared with the control group, low and high groups had significantly higher blood lactate concentrations at D4 and D14. There was no difference at D0. There was no effect of time within the control group. In the low and high groups, blood lactate concentration was increased at D4 and D14 versus D0. Blood lactate concentration was greater in the high group than the low group at D14 only. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Dogs treated with prednisone experience statistically significant increases in blood lactate concentrations, which can result in type B hyperlactatemia. In such cases, improving tissue perfusion, treatment for the commonest form of hyperlactatemia (type A) would be unnecessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To determine if a short, hands-on, point-of-care course improves confidence of veterinary practitioners (VPs) in performing basic point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) applications and diagnosing specific POCUS pathologies., Procedure: A 2-day POCUS course was offered, including 6 h of lectures and 4 h of hands-on training. A self-assessment survey, using a 4-point Likert scale, was administered before and after the course, to study VPs' confidence in attaining ultrasound skills and diagnosing pathologies., Results: One hundred and thirteen participants answered the surveys: 65 (57.5%) completed pre- and post-practical surveys. Difference in confidence levels was assessed on paired pre-and post-practical surveys. Self-confidence increased significantly for each of the questions and for each field [pleural and lung POCUS (PLUS), abdominal POCUS, cardiac POCUS, and ultrasound-guided IV access] ( P < 0.0001). Self-confidence was significantly higher for abdominal POCUS than for PLUS, cardiac POCUS and IV access before ( P < 0.0001), but not following, completion of the course ( P = 0.81)., Conclusion: A short, 2-day course significantly increased the confidence level of VPs in the realization and interpretation of PLUS, abdominal POCUS, and cardiac POCUS questions, and vascular access procedures. Following completion of the course, there was no significant difference in confidence levels among POCUS fields. Practical Relevance: Cats are great pretenders; they often hide illness until they are critical. This makes patients of this species challenging to assess and manage in the emergency setting where quick and stress-free diagnosis and treatment are necessary. Veterinary point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a rapid, evidence-based, non-invasive, repeatable, cage-side ultrasonographic examination designed to answer clinically driven questions without compromising feline wellbeing. Integrating feline friendly POCUS as an extension of the physical examination to streamline diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, thereby limiting stress and improving overall patient care, is advocated by the authors of this article., Equipment: Given the multitude of ultrasound machines and probes available that are portable, meaning they can be moved around the clinic and used patient-side, it should be possible for most practitioners to integrate POCUS into daily practice. The authors' preferred equipment for feline POCUS is a microconvex probe and a portable machine with a fixed pre-set. This set-up allows the clinician to complete all POCUS (abdominal, lung and pleural space, and heart) without needing to move the patient, change probes or restrain the patient in a particular position, ultimately saving time, personnel and cost while maintaining patient comfort and safety., Aim: This review aims to serve as a valuable resource for veterinarians seeking to improve their feline patient care through the judicious utilisation of POCUS. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a constant rate infusion of dexmedetomidine could prolong the analgesic effect of peripheral nerve blocks. Twenty client-owned dogs were enrolled and randomly divided into 2 groups. The DEX group received dexmedetomidine infusion at 1 mcg kg -1  h -1 , and the NaCl group received an equivalent volume infusion of saline. Infusions were started after securing vascular access and continued for 10 min, after which intravenous (IV) methadone at 0.2 mg kg -1 and propofol to effect were administered. All animals were maintained with isoflurane in 70% oxygen. Sciatic, saphenous and obturator nerve blocks were performed using 0.1 mL kg -1 0.5% ropivacaine/block. Intraoperative fentanyl was administered if the heart rate and/or mean arterial pressure (MAP) increased > 15% from the previous measurement, and vasopressors were administered if MAP was ≤ 70 mmHg. Postoperative pain was assessed every hour using the Glasgow Composite Pain Scale (GCPS) until the first rescue analgesia administration. Postoperative rescue analgesia (methadone (0.2 mg kg -1 IV) and carprofen (2 mg kg -1 IV)) was administered if the pain score was higher than 6/24 or 5/20. Duration of analgesia was defined as the time between the nerve block procedure and initial postoperative rescue analgesia. Ambulation, proprioception, and skin sensitivity were evaluated to assess the duration of the motor and sensory block. A Student T and chi-square test were used to compare groups for duration of postoperative analgesia and intraoperative fentanyl and vasopressor use, respectively (p values ≤ 0.5 considered significant). A greater number of dogs in the NaCl group required fentanyl (5/10 p = 0.03) and vasopressors (8/10, p = 0.02) than did those in the DEX group (0/10 and 2/10, respectively). The duration of postoperative analgesia was significantly longer (604 ± 130 min) in the DEX group than in the NaCl group (400 ± 81 min, p = 0.0005).Dexmedetomidine infusion at 1 mcg kg -1  h -1 delays the time to first administration of rescue analgesia and reduces intraoperative analgesic and vasopressor requirements during Tibial Tuberosity Advancement surgery., (© 2024. The purpose of this study was to determine if a continuous rate infusion (CRI) of dexmedetomidine decreases vasopressor requirements in septic dogs undergoing surgery. Vital parameters, sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, vasopressor requirement, and 28-day mortality were recorded. Dogs were randomly divided into two groups: a dexmedetomidine (DEX) (1 mcg/kg/h) group and a control group (NaCl), which received an equivalent CRI of NaCl. Dogs were premedicated with fentanyl 5 mcg/kg IV, induced with propofol, and maintained with sevoflurane and a variable rate fentanyl infusion. DEX or NaCl infusions were started 10 min prior to induction. Fluid-responsive hypotensive patients received repeated Ringer's lactate boluses (2 mL/kg) until stable or they were no longer fluid-responsive. Patients that remained hypotensive following fluid boluses received norepinephrine at a starting dose of 0.05 mcg/kg/min, with increases of 0.05 mcg/kg/min. Rescue adrenaline boluses were administered (0.001 mg/kg) if normotension was not achieved within 30 min of starting norepinephrine. The NaCl group received a significantly higher dose of norepinephrine (0.8, 0.4-2 mcg/kg/min) than the DEX group (0.12, 0-0.86 mcg/kg/min). Mortality was statistically lower in the DEX group (1/10) vs. the NaCl group (5/6). Results of this study suggest that a 1 mcg/kg/h CRI of dexmedetomidine decreases the demand for intraoperative vasopressors and may improve survival in septic dogs.

The use of innovative higher-performance highly reactive resin systems requires an enhancement of the established method of fiber impregnation (open bath) towards closed resin-injection pultrusion (CIP), due to the short pot life of the resin systems. The result is that the open bath is developed into a closed injection and impregnation chamber ("ii-chamber"). In this study, three parameters-resin viscosity, opening angle and opening factor at the injection point on the ii-chamber-are varied, each in three stages. For each set of parameters, a pultrusion trial is conducted and the process pressures in the ii-chamber and pultrusion die measured. This enables direct feedback via the process conditions of the as yet uncured composite. The data obtained are used to validate a newly developed simulation model. The model is based on Darcy's law, which has been extended to take fiber movement into account and thus represent the resulting pressure increase in the die. The flexible ii-chamber and die concept enhance our understanding of the processes taking place in the die system. The sensitivity of the process pressures can be shown for the three influencing variables. The experiment shows that of the three influencing variables investigated, viscosity has the greatest sensitivity to pressure development. In general, it can be said that over the length of the pultrusion die system, the pressure level increases across the three measuring points.

Clinical decisions are influenced by hematocrit values. Centrifugation (reference standard), conductivity, optical and impedance methods are often used interchangeably to measure hematocrit. The effects of albumin, which are known to affect conductivity methods, have not been evaluated for limits of agreement (LOA) between hematocrit assays in small animals. Canine venous blood was collected from 74 clinical cases and measured by centrifugation ( n = 72), conductivity ( n = 73), impedance ( n = 24) and optical ( n = 50) methods. Bland-Altman analysis determined bias (± SD) and 95% LOA between methods. There was a statistically significant difference between centrifugation hematocrit values and values obtained via conductivity ( p < 0.0001), optical ( p < 0.0001), and impedance ( p = 0.0082) methods. The conductivity method underestimated hematocrit by 2.1 ± 2.9% (95% LOA -3.54 to 7.88), the optical method by 3.1 ± 3.6% (95% LOA -4.0 to 10.2), and the impedance method by 2.3 ± 3.7% (95% LOA -5 to 9.6) when compared to centrifuged hematocrit values. The hematocrit difference between conductivity and centrifugation methods was statistically different for low (4%, 0-5%), within reference limits (3%, -5 to 8%), and high (2%, -2 to 5%) albumin values, respectively ( p = 0.02), with post-hoc analysis demonstrating that the difference occurred between the low and high albumin groups. This study confirms that albumin values outside reference limits can affect the conductivity method and that hematocrit values obtained via conductivity, optical and impedance methods underestimate values obtained via centrifugation. Therefore, the hematocrit methods cannot be used interchangeably. Background: Comparison of clinical findings, chest radiographs (CXR), lung ultrasound (LUS) findings, and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations at admission and serial follow-up in dogs with aspiration pneumonia (AP) is lacking., Hypothesis: Lung ultrasound lesions in dogs with AP are similar to those described in humans with community-acquired pneumonia (comAP); the severity of CXR and LUS lesions are similar; normalization of CRP concentration precedes resolution of imaging abnormalities and more closely reflects the clinical improvement of dogs., Animals: Seventeen dogs with AP., Methods: Prospective observational study. Clinical examination, CXR, LUS, and CRP measurements performed at admission (n = 17), 2 weeks (n = 13), and 1 month after diagnosis (n = 6). All dogs received antimicrobial therapy. Lung ultrasound and CXR canine aspiration scoring systems used to compare abnormalities., Results: B-lines and shred signs with or without bronchograms were identified on LUS in 14 of 17 and 16 of 17, at admission. Chest radiographs and LUS scores differed significantly using both canine AP scoring systems at each time point (18 regions per dog, P < .001). Clinical and CRP normalization occurred in all dogs during follow up. Shred signs disappeared on LUS in all but 1 of 6 dogs at 1 month follow-up, while B-lines and CXR abnormalities persisted in 4 of 6 and all dogs, respectively., Conclusion and Clinical Importance: Lung ultrasound findings resemble those of humans with comAP and differ from CXR findings. Aim: The number of online graduate nursing programs across the United States has increased to address a critical shortage of nurse educators. Web-based learning appeals to nurses returning to school as a means of gaining an education at their convenience. More schools are offering compressed courses to meet this demand. Although students have a preference toward shorter intensive online courses, it is unclear how that affects the quality of the learning experience such as student engagement. The study explored the effect of course length on the student learning experience in a graduate online nurse educator course., Design: Using the community of inquiry framework, this study examined the effect of course duration (8-week versus traditional 16-week timeframes) on student engagement, student perceptions of the learning experience and self-reported learning behaviors. Study participants were enrolled in an online graduate nurse educator program located in the northwest United States., Methods: Data were collected using a background information form, a course evaluation form and the Community of Inquiry Questionnaire which measured teaching presence, social presence and cognitive presence. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics., Results: High mean scores on the questionnaire showed that a community of inquiry was established regardless of course duration. However, there were differences in terms of the social and teaching presence subscales but not in the cognitive presence subscale suggesting that students in the traditional course were better able to establish the type of rapport with each other that increased comfort and engagement with peer interactions. Independent t-tests revealed statistically significant differences in perceptions of time to complete course activities. Students in the 16-week course were more likely to report that they had adequate time to complete course teachings, think critically about course content, complete course assignments and thoughtfully engage in course discussion and that they performed their best on assignments., Conclusions: The findings support the traditional course duration over an intensive 8-week format because it allows for students to build a better rapport and greater student engagement with the course materials and peers. The study reinforces previous work on distance education noting social presence and connectedness as essential to optimal online learning. Objective: In ungulates, α 2 -adrenergic agonists can decrease oxygenation possibly through alteration of pulmonary perfusion. Sodium nitroprusside can decrease pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and increase cardiac output (Q˙ t ) through vasodilation. The objective was to determine if sodium nitroprusside would improve pulmonary perfusion and attenuate the increased alveolar-arterial (a-a) gradient resulting from medetomidine-azaperone-alfaxalone (MAA) administration., Study Design: Prospective, randomized, crossover study with a 2 week rest period., Animals: A group of eight adult female captive white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus)., Methods: Deer were administered MAA intramuscularly (IM), and auricular artery and pulmonary artery balloon catheters were placed. Deer spontaneously breathed air. Saline or sodium nitroprusside (0.07 mg kg -1 ) were administered IM 40 minutes after MAA injection. Heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), mean pulmonary arterial pressure (MPAP), pulmonary artery occlusion pressure (PAOP), right atrial pressure (RAP), Q˙ t , arterial pH, PaCO 2 and PaO 2 were obtained immediately before nitroprusside injection (baseline) and 5, 10 and 15 minutes afterwards. Mixed venous blood samples were obtained at baseline and at 5 minutes. Systemic vascular resistance (SVR), PVR, intrapulmonary shunt fraction (Q˙ s /Q˙ t ), a-a gradient, oxygen delivery (D˙O 2 ) and oxygen extraction ratio (O 2 ER) were calculated. Statistical analysis was performed with repeated measures analysis of variance with correction factors. A p value < 0.05 was considered significant., Results: With nitroprusside, MAP, MPAP, PAOP, RAP, SVR and O 2 ER significantly decreased and HR, Q˙ t and D˙O 2 increased compared with baseline and between treatments. There was a significant decrease in PVR and a-a gradient and increase in PaO 2 compared with baseline and saline treatment. Changes were not sustained., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Nitroprusside temporarily changed hemodynamic variables, increased PaO 2 and decreased a-a gradient. Nitroprusside possibly led to better pulmonary perfusion of ventilated alveoli. Objective: To evaluate cardiovascular focused assessment with sonography for trauma and triage (CV-FAST) interobserver agreement for echocardiographic parameters and caudal vena cava (CVC) diameter measurement, between a cardiologist and 2 non-cardiologists after a 6-hour training course., Setting: University veterinary teaching hospital., Animals: Fifteen healthy Beagle dogs., Interventions: None., Measurements and Main Results: Echocardiography parameters were assessed via standardized views. Caudal vena cava was assessed via a subxiphoid window (CVC-SubX) using 3 measurements (minimal and maximal CVC diameter, and collapsibility index) and via a dorsolateral window (CVC-DL) using 1 measurement (CVC diameter). Bland-Altman analysis assessed agreement of each non-cardiologist with the cardiologist; coefficients of variation (CoV) quantified variability between observers. The 95% limits of agreement (LOA) and CoVs were considered acceptable for left atrial diameter, left atrium to aortic ratio, normalized left ventricle diameter in diastole and systole but non-acceptable for fractional shortening and pulmonary vein to pulmonary artery ratio. For CVC-SubX, the 95% LOA for maximum CVC diameter were acceptable, while minimum CVC diameter and CVC collapsibility index were non-acceptable. The CoVs were good for maximum and minimum CVC (7%) and poor for collapsibility index (37%). For CVC-DL, the 95% LOA were non-acceptable, although the CoV was considered good (11%)., Conclusions: A 6-hour training course in echocardiography allows non-cardiologists to assess left atrial diameter, left atrium to aortic ratio, normalized left ventricle diameter in diastole and systole, and CVC max of the CV-FAST exam in healthy Beagles. Standardization of the CVC-SubX technique and assessment of the impact of the respiratory phase on CVC diameter in dogs is needed. Further studies are required to determine whether interobserver agreement remains acceptable when including different breeds. Pneumothorax is typically ruled out sonographically by detecting a glide sign, lung pulse, and/or B lines, and ruled in by detecting the return of a glide sign and/or presence of a lung point. This case series describes novel lung ultrasound findings (abnormal curtain signs) in dogs with naturally-occurring pneumothorax. This case series also describes a novel lung ultrasound protocol that involves evaluating the curtain sign along the entire thoracoabdominal border and evaluating the ventral pleural space with the probe parallel to the ribs. Six dogs with pneumothorax (three traumatic pneumothorax and three spontaneous pneumothorax) had lung ultrasound performed. All dogs had normal synchronous curtain signs in the caudal mid-to-ventral region of the thorax and abnormal curtain signs in the caudal mid-to-dorsal thoracic regions. Five dogs had bilateral pneumothorax; four had a lung point and absence of a glide sign bilaterally, and one had a lung point identified unilaterally (a lung point was not visible on the opposite side and the glide sign was equivocal bilaterally). One dog had a unilateral pneumothorax, in which a lung point and absence of a glide sign were identified. With the probe parallel to the ribs in the ventral thorax, a small volume pleural effusion was also identified in two dogs. All dogs had mild to moderate quantities of pleural air removed via thoracentesis or chest tubes following lung ultrasound. Two distinct types of abnormal curtain sign were observed, referred to as the asynchronous curtain sign and the double curtain sign. The authors hypothesize that these abnormal curtain signs are caused by the presence of free air within and/or cranial to the costophrenic recess. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first description of pneumothorax-induced abnormal curtain signs, and the first report of evaluating the curtain sign to diagnose pneumothorax in any species. Further research is required to determine the sensitivity and specificity of asynchronous and double curtain signs in diagnosing pneumothorax, and to investigate whether probe orientation parallel to the ribs in the ventral thorax will improve detection of pleural effusion.

Calves that have undergone a dystocia are often hypoxic and acidemic, which can result in reduced vigor and subsequent mortality. Methods of field resuscitation of apneic newborn calves are often ineffective and therefore underutilized. This proof-of-concept study aimed to determine the efficacy of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) as well as the current industry standard method of ventilation, the McCulloch Calf Aspirator/ Resuscitator (MMR) for positive pressure ventilation of neonatal calves. Five LMA models of various sizes were first tested in cadaver heads to assess anatomical fit. Three LMA models in two sizes each were then tested in two anesthetized calves to determine the model best suited to ventilate calves. Next, the selected LMA and the MMR were both assessed for efficacy of ventilation. Six anesthetized calves had hypoventilation induced by administering alfaxalone intravenously. Calves were ventilated for 3 min with the LMA, allowed a brief washout period, then given a second administration of alfaxalone prior to ventilation with the MMR. Serial arterial blood gas analyses were performed prior to ventilation (baseline), at 1, 2, and 3 min during ventilation, and 1 min after ventilation had ceased. Success of ventilation was assessed by monitoring partial pressure of oxygen (PaO 2 ), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO 2 ), bicarbonate ( HCO 3 - ), pH, L-lactate, and hemoglobin saturation (SaO 2 ) in arterial blood. A one-way ANOVA for repeated measures with Bonferroni correction was used to assess the efficacy of ventilation of each device compared to baseline. For the LMA, PaO 2 , SaO 2 , and pH were significantly higher than baseline throughout ventilation and PaCO 2 was significantly lower than baseline at 1 min of ventilation. For the MMR, PaO 2 and SaO 2 were significantly higher and PaCO 2 and HCO 3 - were significantly lower than baseline for 1 to 2 min of ventilation. This proof-of-concept study showed the LMA is an effective means of ventilating neonatal calves, as was the MMR.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a considerable use of psychotropics. Leveraging nationwide registry data, we aimed to describe the use of psychotropics among children and adolescents with ASD in Denmark. Use of melatonin and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication increased from 2010 to 2017, while there were limited changes in use of antidepressants and antipsychotics. Thirty percent of the identified children used psychotropics in 2017 most commonly ADHD medication (17%) and melatonin (13%). Methylphenidate, sertraline and risperidone were most often prescribed. Most children filled more than one prescription and, across drug classes, at least 38% received treatment two years after treatment initiation. Use of psychotropics followed psychiatric comorbidities. Comorbidities did not affect age at treatment initiation. Use of psychotropics varied according to age and sex with limited use in the youngest children. In summary, psychotropic drug use has increased in children with ASD mainly due to an increase in the use of ADHD medication and melatonin. In accordance with previous studies, use seems to follow comorbidities. The long treatment duration underlines the need to investigate long-term effects of psychotropic drug use in children with ASD.

Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) is a life-threatening condition, suspected to result in differential tissue perfusion in different regions of the body. Lactate is a biomarker of hypoperfusion that correlates with treatment outcomes in dogs with GDV. This prospective observational study aimed to compare lactate between saphenous and cephalic venous samples in 45 client-owned dogs with GDV, to evaluate their association with treatment outcomes (survival, surgical complications, and duration of hospitalization) and to assess the correlation between lactate and other biochemical parameters. Both saphenous and cephalic lactate concentrations were significantly higher in non-survivors ( P = 0.01). No statistical difference was found between lactate concentrations in saphenous versus cephalic venous samples ( P = 0.480). For each dog, the difference in lactate between saphenous and cephalic veins was calculated (Δlactate = saphenous - cephalic); it was not associated with survival ( P = 0.198), surgical complications ( P = 0.346), or duration of hospitalization ( P = 0.803). Higher lactate and lower glucose (saphenous vein) were associated with lower PCV and higher creatinine, on presentation. The results of this study failed to show an association between Δlactate concentrations and treatment outcomes in dogs with GDV; however, in agreement with previous studies, lower lactate was associated with a decreased mortality rate.

Chemical immobilization is a key aspect of wildlife management. To minimize dose-dependent adverse effects, immobilization protocols often include two or more synergistic agents, which allows for reductions in individual drug dosages. Free-ranging bighorn sheep ( Ovis canadensis) in Canada ( n = 74) were remotely injected with a combination of medetomidine (0.16 ± 0.04 mg/kg) and ketamine (4.0 ± 1.4 mg/kg) (MK), or combination of medetomidine (0.14 ± 0.06 mg/kg), azaperone (0.21 ± 0.11 mg/kg), and alfaxalone (0.45 ± 0.21 mg/kg) (MAA). Once recumbency was achieved, arterial blood samples were collected and immediately analyzed for blood gas and acid-base status. Rectal temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate were recorded upon recumbency and throughout anesthesia at 5-15 min intervals. At conclusion of the procedures, medetomidine was reversed by intramuscular atipamezole at five times the medetomidine dose. Induction times (mean ± standard deviation) of animals that became immobilized with one dart (8.7 ± 3.2 min, 7.3 ± 3.9 min) and recovery times of all animals (3.4 ± 1.5 min, 3.9 ± 1.6 min) were not significantly different between MK and MAA groups, respectively. Both MK and MAA groups experienced severe hypoxemia (PaO 2 42 ± 9 mmHg, 40 ± 10 mmHg, respectively). PaCO 2 was significantly higher ( P = 0.0248) in the MK group (median 54 mmHg) than the MAA group (median 48 mmHg) with a trend towards lower pH (7.40 vs 7.42, respectively, P = 0.07). Initially, MK animals had higher heart rates than MAA animals (median 49 vs 40 beats/min), which decreased over time. In bighorn sheep, both MK and MAA produced reliable, reversible immobilization with smooth inductions and recoveries. However, less respiratory depression was seen with MAA than MK.
