BACKGROUND: Refeeding syndrome is the gravest possible medical complication in malnourished patients undergoing refeeding in the hospital. We previously reported that males with malnutrition secondary to eating disorders required more calories and had longer hospital stays than females; however, sex differences in electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk remain unknown. The objective of this study was to assess differences in electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk among male and female adolescents and young adults with eating disorders hospitalized for medical instability. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 558 patients aged 9-25 years admitted to the University of California, San Francisco Eating Disorders Program for medical instability between May 2012 and August 2020. Greater women's bargaining power and decision‐making within a household have been shown to increase investments in human capital. This study links women's participation in decision‐making in dairy production with household investment in girls and boys in health, nutrition, and education. We survey households in the urbanizing region of Bangalore, India. We utilize a multinomial treatment effects model to analyze the individual and household factors that are associated with women's participation in sole or joint decision‐making. We then assess how the type of decision‐making influences a household's investments. The results first show that female decision‐making households are more disadvantaged on average than other types of decision‐making households. Second, we observe that female decision‐makers for dairy production are more likely to have more children and earn a higher income than their husbands. Third, the main findings show that households in which women engage in joint decision‐making have higher levels of investment across all categories for girls. Conversely, investments decrease in education and nutrition for both girls and boys when the wife is the sole decision‐maker. This study examined the relationships of sociocultural body ideal internalization, difficulties in emotion regulation, and their interaction with body image concerns in a group of 423 Canadian adolescent boys. Participants were 12 to 17 years old and completed multiple self-reported questionnaires. Regression analyses and latent moderation structural equations were performed. Both variables were positively correlated with body dissatisfaction, drive for muscularity, restrained eating, and emotional eating. The internalization of men's sociocultural body ideal moderated the relationships between multiple difficulties in emotion regulation and some body image concerns. These results are in line with findings of other studies among adult men and women, and dominant theories of body image concerns, which have been derived especially from women populations. Using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study—Kindergarten Class of 2011 (n = 14,370; 51% Male; 51% White; 14% Black; 25% Hispanic; 4% Asian; and 6% Other), this study examined the cumulative, timing‐specific, and enduring associations between student–teacher relationships in the United States and a broad range of student outcomes. Student–teacher conflict and closeness were consistently associated with outcomes between kindergarten and third grade, both contemporaneously and over time. The main exception was for student absenteeism, where there were less consistent associations with student–teacher conflict. Cumulative models underscore the significance of the overall experiences of high‐quality relationships over time. Despite little evidence of variability, girls fared less well socially due to more conflictual and less close relationships with their teachers than boys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Males, on average, are bigger and stronger than females. Hormonal differences during puberty are one reason given for this performance advantage. However, not all evidence supports that thesis. Our aim was to further this discussion by measuring early life changes between sexes (when hormones would be similar) in components of muscle function. Methods: Fifty‐one children (29 boys, 22 girls) completed this study. Forearm muscle size and strength were assessed three times with each time point being separated by approximately a year (2021–2023). Results: There was no sex*time interaction for handgrip strength (p = 0.637). There was, however, a time (p < 0.001) and sex (p < 0.001) effect. Strength increased each year and boys were stronger than girls (difference of 1.5 [95% 0.7, 2.3] kg). There was no sex*time interaction for ulnar muscle thickness (p = 0.714) but there was a time (p < 0.001) effect. Muscle size increased each year but there was no evidence of a sex effect (p = 0.12; difference of 0.81 [95% −0.21, 1.8] mm). A strong positive within‐participant correlation between muscle size and strength (r = 0.803 95% CI: [0.72, 0.86], p < 0.0001) was found across time. Conclusion: Muscle size and strength increased together but this increase did not differ based on sex and boys were stronger than girls. Future work is needed to determine the reason for this difference in maximal strength. Any effect was seemingly present at the initial measurement (at the age of 4 years), since muscle size and strength did not change differently between boys and girls over time. Strategies for controlling hypertension include reducing excess fat and increasing muscle mass. However, the effects of exercise interventions on hypertension in adolescents have been little investigated. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of 12 weeks of aerobic exercise on systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and the cardiometabolic profile of overweight hypertensive and non-hypertensive boys. The sample included 107 boys diagnosed as overweight, aged between 12 and 17, divided into two non-hypertension groups, one control (GCN, n = 14) and one with exercise (GEN, n = 55), as well as two groups of hypertensives, one control (GCH, n = 12) and one with exercise (GEH, n = 26). The boys were assessed at the study baseline and after 12 weeks in terms of anthropometric parameters, biological maturation, SBP, DBP and mean blood pressure (MBP), lipid, and metabolic profile. The aerobic training programs lasted 12 weeks and were carried out in three weekly sessions at different intensities. The high-intensity interval training session lasted around 35 min at an intensity of 80–100% of the reserve heart rate, and the moderate-intensity of continuous training session lasted 60 min at an intensity of 35–75% of the reserve heart rate. Caloric expenditure was equivalent between the exercises (p = 0.388). CGN and CGH participated only in school physical activities. Repeated measures analysis of variance and clinical effect analysis using Cohen's effect size were used, with a significance level established at p < 0.05. After 12 weeks, all groups increased their height (p < 0.05), but only the exercise groups showed a reduction in anthropometric variables (p < 0.05), with a possibly beneficial effect in GEN (d = − 0.203; p = 0.003). No differences were found in the variables for the GCN. The GCH and GEH groups reduced SBP (p < 0.05), but only GEH showed a reduction in DBP (p = 0.005) and MBP (p = 0.001). In relation to the lipid profile, GEH maintained HDL-c close to baseline values, while GCH showed a reduction in HDL-c (p = 0.021). Regarding the clinical effect of exercise on hypertension, GEH showed a large and very beneficial effect size on DBP (d = − 0.916; p = 0.006) and MBP (d = − 0.926; p = 0.005). Conclusion: Hypertensive boys who practiced physical exercise showed greater effects in reducing blood pressure, indicating the importance of non-drug therapeutic management in overweight adolescents. Although sexting is a widespread phenomenon among today’s youth, little is known about their experiences of sexting with their intimate partners. This study addresses this gap by examining young people’s reasons for sexting and emotional reactions to sending and receiving sexts in their intimate relationships, as reported by 764 (48.7% girls) 15–20-year-olds in Finland. Both younger and older girls and boys reported mostly positive reactions to both sending and receiving sexts. However, girls reported more negative reactions than boys did. Girls’ reasons for sending sexts were more frequently related to their own desire to feel sexy or flirtatious, their need for validation from their partner, or the pressure that their partner put on them to sext, whereas boys’ reasons more often indicated normative ideas of sexting as a typical component in a romantic relationship and responding to sexts sent to them by their partners. The results suggest that although it is mostly consensual and reciprocal, sexting within intimate relationships may carry different meanings for boys and girls, reflecting gendered heterosexual norms. This article delves into the experiences of boys and young men grappling with anxiety surrounding potential ‘homosexual’ orientation, particularly within the context of societal expectations of normative heterosexuality. Using data from queries submitted to a Finnish sexual counselling service between 2017 and 2019, we highlight a dissonance between societal equality initiatives and the lived experiences of boys and young men in Finland. Drawing on queer theory and social norms critique, we analyse the constraints that limit the exploration of sexuality and self-identification among young Finnish men. Our findings underscore the pervasive impact of enduring societal norms on young men’s ability to express their sexuality openly and authentically. We advocate for strategies to promote a more supportive environment for young persons to navigate their sexual identities and advocate for the well-being of young people, alongside considerations for professionals working in youth support roles. Previous studies have shown that social media influences adolescents’ perceptions of their body image and self-esteem. This study examines TikTok’s impact on these aspects, specifically focusing on adolescent boys, a demographic that has been underrepresented in research. Given the scarcity of prior studies on this topic, we employed a qualitative, exploratory methodology. The study sample was purposive, comprising 15 pre-adolescents (ages 10-14) and 15 adolescents (ages 15-19). We conducted semi-structured interviews, which were subsequently transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis with MaxQDA software. Our findings indicate that TikTok can have both positive and negative effects on male adolescents’ self-perception of body image and self-esteem. Certain practices on TikTok were associated with increased body vigilance and changes in sports practices and eating habits. While excessive use of the platform negatively impacted self-esteem, the type of content consumed also played a significant role, leading to positive outcomes in some cases. Objective: The study used both person‐centered (i.e., parallel process latent class growth modeling) and variable‐centered (i.e., random intercept cross‐lagged panel modeling) approaches to examine developmental changes in global and domain‐specific self‐esteem from middle childhood to early adolescence. Method: A total of 715 Chinese youth participated (54.3% boys; 45.7% girls; Mage = 9.96; SD = 0.51) in a 6‐wave longitudinal study with 6‐month intervals. Results: Parallel process latent class growth modeling identified three co‐developmental trajectories of global and domain‐specific self‐esteem: Congruent high increasing and then flattening global and domain‐specific self‐esteem, congruent moderate domain‐specific self‐esteem with convex global self‐esteem, and congruent low with concave appearance and global self‐esteem. Results from random intercept cross‐lagged panel modeling found reciprocal within‐person associations between academic self‐esteem and global self‐esteem; global self‐esteem significantly predicted social self‐esteem, while physical appearance self‐esteem significantly predicted global self‐esteem. Conclusion: Evidence was provided for top‐down and bottom‐up effects of self‐esteem among Chinese youth. The findings provided new insight into the development of self‐esteem in youth. Generic statements are commonly expressed using the bare plural – 'tigers are striped' – or the indefinite singular – 'a tiger is striped'. Notoriously, some generics can be expressed using the bare plural locution, but not the indefinite singular; bare plural generics and indefinite singular generics pattern differently. I explore this phenomenon as it applies to normative generic statements: expressions like boys don't cry, women are kind and nurturing, children are seen and not heard – that convey something over and above (and even distinct from) the descriptive reading. I argue that we should look to a metalinguistic theory of generics to understand indefinite singular normative generics. That is, a normative indefinite singular generic is a proposal about what to include in the extension of the generic term. This theory explains why it is more often than not that felicitous indefinite singular generics are about social kind terms. I argue that this explains a crucial way in which language shapes the social world. When we say things like (2), we propose definitions and uses for the word 'boy'. Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are associated with severe and persistent juvenile offending. CU traits are also associated with dampened emotional arousal, which suggests that fundamental frequency (f0), a measure of vocally-encoded emotional arousal, may serve as an accessible psychophysiological marker of CU traits in youth. This study investigated the associations between f0 range measured during an emotionally evocative task, CU traits, and emotion dysregulation in a mixed-gender sample of 168 justice-involved youth. For boys, after controlling for covariates, wider f0 range—indicating greater emotional arousal—was negatively associated with CU traits and positively associated with emotion dysregulation. For girls, no significant associations with f0 range emerged; however, CU traits were positively associated with emotion dysregulation. Findings suggest that f0 range may serve as a valid indicator of CU traits in JJ-involved boys, and that detained boys and girls with high CU traits are characterized by different profiles of emotion dysregulation. Background Menstruation is considered a “women’s” topic in India because the majority of studies on the subject solely include girls and women. Adolescent boys are excluded from this discussion, which obscures the fact that menstruation is a social epidemiological phenomenon with ingrained gender disparities. In order to motivate boys to contribute significantly to women’s health, research on their knowledge, attitudes, and experiences linked to menstruation, including socioeconomic factors, must be done. Reducing gender differences in adolescent health requires addressing this. Objectives The study aims to explore the knowledge and attitudes of school-going adolescent boys in urban Jabalpur regarding menstruation, considering factors such as family structure and sociocultural practices. Materials and Methods Qualitative data using focus group discussions with 25 boys, age group 13-17 years from Jabalpur Urban area, Madhya Pradesh was conducted. Data was analysed by thematic analysis. Results There was a mixture of curiosity and embarrassment about menstruation. Many were misinformed and lacked correct knowledge. Most of the children gained information from either the parents or their peer group. Sex education is not given properly in most of the schools. Boys with either sisters or female friends has more knowledge and good attitude regarding menstruation. Conclusion Our study highlights the need of improving Indian boys’ understanding and beliefs about menstruation by addressing the social determinants that influence their menstruation-related experiences.

Objectives. This study aimed to experimentally identify and evaluate the effectiveness of using intensive interval programs to develop endurance in the educational process of 10-year-old boys. Materials and methods. The research involved twenty 10-year-old boys. Control (n = 10) and experimental (n = 10) groups were created. Children and their parents were informed of the features of the study and agreed to participate in the experiment. The study protocol was approved by the ethics committee of H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University (Kharkiv, Ukraine). This study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki – Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects (World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki, 2013). The following research methods were used: scientific and methodological literature analysis, pedagogical testing, and mathematical statistics to process research results. Results. According to the results of the complex control of boys’ endurance abilities, statistically significant changes in all indicators in both experimental (p < 0.001) and control groups (p < 0.05) were established. The positive dynamics of the results favoured the experimental group. The most statistically significant changes took place in the experimental group on indicators of tests “Push-ups in a lying position” by 35.2% (p < 0.001), “Jumping with a rope for 1 min” (20.8%; p < 0.001), “Squatting on two legs for 1 min” (18.8%; p < 0.001), “From a lying position rising in a saddle for 1 min” (17.4%; p < 0.01). The obtained results of the final testing in tests “Hanging on bent arms’ ”, “Burpee test in 1 min” and “300 m run” were somewhat lower and still demonstrated statistically significant changes (13.0%, 11.4%, 6.5%, respectively, at the level of significance p

Background and Study Aim. Since its inception in 1988, the EUROFIT database network has expanded significantly. This expansion has facilitated the use of standardized test batteries to evaluate physical fitness across diverse groups. This study therefore aimed to determine possible differences in EUROFIT scores between rural and urban male children in Kosovo aged 7 to 11 years and to suggest the underlying factors besides the differences. Material and Methods. The study involved 500 schoolchildren from Kosovo, both rural and urban, aged between 7 and 11 years. They were equally distributed within the total sample. Measurements were conducted using EUROFIT and anthropometric tests. The results were subsequently analyzed and compared using a Student's t-test. Results. The data revealed that urban children have a better starting point, benefiting from greater access to organized physical activities. Their diets, while less healthy, may enhance physical power. The rural environment fosters healthier growth and skill development in boys, particularly before and during the onset of puberty. Conclusions. Urban children should maintain their regular organized physical activities throughout the school period. This will help them match their rural peers in terms of motor and functional abilities. However, morphological traits are becoming more similar between these groups as they enter the prepubertal stage. Future studies should investigate potential differences in female samples. They should also extend to other countries and regions to provide a broader perspective.

This research examined the link between persistence and cheating in 3‐ to 6‐year‐old children (2021–2022, N = 200, 100 boys; Mage = 4.85 years; all middle‐class Han Chinese). Study 1 used a challenging game to measure whether children would cheat when they were allowed to play the game unsupervised. Results indicated that children's situational, but not trait, persistence negatively correlated with cheating: the higher children's situational persistence, the less likely they cheated. Study 2 not only replicated the results of Study 1 but also discovered that children who cheated became less persistent afterward. Our research reveals a novel bidirectional relation between situational persistence and cheating and underscores the importance of nurturing persistence in early childhood as a strategy to foster honesty. Contemporary discourses on feminism’s role in Australian boys’ lives focus on how feminism might guide strategies that train boys to resist negative or ‘toxic’ performances of masculinity and instead encourage them to strive for a ‘healthy’ or ‘positive’ masculinity. In this article, I question whether training young people to attach themselves to a particular masculinity is aligned with a commitment to queer politics or serves the interests of boys, particularly queer boys or gender-diverse young people. I begin by tracing unsettled contests over masculinity's ontological foundations, including the roles of biology, identification, ‘gendered’ traits, and affective attachments. Through the method of autoethnography, I then explore issues that arise in the logic and implementation of common desires to train boys into ‘healthy’ men. I argue that, drawing on a queer liberation tradition, feminism can be an invitation to solidarity and freedom as well as a ‘way out’ or ‘refuge’ from the regulatory policing of gender norms associated with boyhood. Gender role attitudes have important implications at the individual, family, and societal levels, underscoring the importance of understanding their development. Although parents predominate in the socialization of gender role attitudes in childhood, the influence of friends increases during adolescence. In particular, cross-gender friends can provide unique insights and perspectives on another gender group, making them likely to shape gender role attitudes. However, empirical explorations of the link between gender role attitudes and cross-gender friendships have been rare. Furthermore, the few studies conducted have yielded ambiguous results and have struggled to separate the influence of cross-gender friends from a selection of such friendships based on gender role attitudes. This study addresses these limitations by using longitudinal social network models to assess the co-evolution of friendship networks and gender role attitudes among 3,194 youth (Mage = 15.2, SD = 0.67, 51% female) in German schools. The findings reveal that, after accounting for selection processes, boys with cross-gender friends develop more egalitarian gender role attitudes, while girls' attitudes are unaffected by cross-gender friendships. Plato's Lysis simmers with masculinity and with challenges to masculine thinking. I argue that these features of the dialogue can illuminate each other. By attending to the ways in which Socrates undercuts a rationalistic approach to friendship, we can see that Socrates also poses a challenge to traditional Athenian models of masculine relationships. The relationships of 10 gifted high-achieving Millennial males and their fathers were the focus of this qualitative research study. Through in-depth interviews, six significant themes were identified: father's strong work ethic and self-sacrifice, father as teacher of skills and life lessons, father's design and maintenance of father–son rituals, father's quiet presence on the sidelines, father's authenticity and comfort with self, and father's respect for son's talents, decision making, and developing independence. Although boys and girls start out performing similarly on STEM-related school subjects, the gap between them widens as they mature, leading to the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields at the college level and in the workforce. The current study examines the development of children's beliefs about men's and women's competence and other boys' and girls' learning ability for STEM and non-STEM topics. Children ages 5 through 9 (N = 134) judged adults to be less competent at professions they perceived as more difficult. Boys gave higher competence ratings to men than women in STEM and non-STEM fields, but girls only gave higher ratings to women than men in non-STEM fields. Children also viewed girls as less capable of learning about STEM subjects compared to non-STEM subjects, but they perceived boys as similarly capable of learning both STEM and non-STEM subjects. However, children's own school subject preferences and career aspirations (STEM or non-STEM) were not related to their judgments of adults or other children. The results point to the detrimental effects of gender stereotypes on children's beliefs about women's and girls' abilities in STEM. Aim: To assess testicular volume at puberty for boys who underwent orchidopexy at 9 or at 36 months compared to boys with spontaneous postnatal descent. Methods: At age 6 months, boys with congenital unilateral cryptorchidism were randomised to surgery at 9 or 39 months of age and followed to 16 years in parallel with boys with spontaneous postnatal descent. Ultrasound was done at 11 and 16 years to determine testicular volume. The ratio of the initially undescended testis to its scrotal counterpart was used to assess testicular growth. Results: At age 16, the ratio was lower (p < 0.00) in the late group compared to the early group. At 16 years, the spontaneously descended testes were significantly smaller than their scrotal counterparts but larger than the operated groups (early p < 0.01 and late p < 0.00). Conclusion: Our data at 16 years show that orchidopexy at 9 months results in better testicular growth compared to 3 years but did not reach the corresponding volumes of their scrotal counterparts. This indicates that earlier surgery is beneficial to testicular growth. At age 16, the postnatally descended testes were not only larger than the surgically treated testes but also exhibited impaired testicular growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context There are only a few nationwide studies on boys with central precocious puberty (CPP) and the last Italian study is a case series of 45 boys that dates back to 2000. Objective We aimed to evaluate the causes of CPP in boys diagnosed during the last 2 decades in Italy and the relative frequency of forms with associated central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compared to idiopathic ones. Methods We performed a national multicenter retrospective study collecting data from 193 otherwise normal healthy boys with a diagnosis of CPP. Based on MRI findings, the patients were divided into: Group 1, no CNS abnormalities; Group 2, mild abnormalities (incidental findings) unrelated to CPP; and Group 3, causal pathological CNS abnormalities. Results The MRI findings show normal findings in 86%, mild abnormalities (incidental findings) in 8.3%, and causal pathological CNS abnormalities in 5.7% of the cases. In Group 3, we found a higher proportion of patients with chronological age at diagnosis < 7 years (P =.00001) and body mass index greater than +2 SDS (P <.01). Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue therapy was started in 183/193 subjects. The final height appeared in the range of the target height in all groups and in 9 patients in whom the therapy was not started. Conclusion In our study on a large nationwide cohort of boys referred for precocious puberty signs, the percentage of forms associated with CNS abnormalities was one of the lowest reported in the literature. Introduction: Gamification-based learning (GBL) approach has the potential to enhance teaching and learning about reproductive and sexual health education (ReReki). There were six games (Let's X-plore, The Red Zone, Message Card for You, Box & Portal, This & That, and MonoReReki) created in ReReki module with the element of gamification (e.g.: milestones, rules, guides, points, competition). This study aimed to assess the gameful experience (G-EXP) of ReReki among adolescent boys in Sarawak's Southern region, specifically Kota Samarahan and Serian. Materials and methods: The questionnaire was subjected to a validation process that included content and face validity (n = 5), exploratory factor analysis (EFA, n = 175), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA, n = 165), and internal reliability. Boys between the ages of 13 and 17 who attend schools in Kota Samarahan and Serian participated in this study. This study used the original 65-items by Hogberg GAMEFULQUEST, which is divided into seven domains (accomplishment, challenge, competition, guided, immersion, playfulness, and social experience). Results: The panel experts rated all 35 items and chose six domains in G-EXP questionnaire as "essential" with a minimum 0.99 content validity ratio (CVR). However, the EFA procedure supported only five-factor domains (accomplishment, competition, guidance, playfulness, and social experience) with 32 items. The immersion domain was eliminated. The CFA procedure confirmed only 16 items and five domains, with a model fit of χ² = 198.00, df = 94, p < 0.001, χ²/df = 2.11, SRMR=0.04, CFI = 0.94 and TLI = 0.93 and RMSEA = 0.08. The Cronbach's alpha for five constructs varied between 0.72 and 0.91. Conclusion: This study proposed five domains and 16 items to assess the gameful experience of the ReReki module in adolescent boys. To enhance GBL in sexual and reproductive health education, the element of games must include competition, accomplishment, guidance, playfulness, and social experience domains. The emergence of gender-typical appearance in childhood appears to have important implications not only for child and adolescent social-emotional functioning but also for later working life. In the current study, we examined how parents' gender-typical appearance and children's gender similarity (to same- and other-gender peers) were related to young children's gender-typical appearance. We also explored differences in these associations between boys, girls, mothers, and fathers. Home visits were conducted with 74 Dutch two-parent (mother, father) families with both a son and daughter between the ages 3–6 years (96.6% White, 2.0% Asian, 1.4% other ethnicity). The gender-typical appearance of all four family members was assessed by trained and reliable coders in the videotaped observations from the home visits. As a measure of children's gender similarity, both parents reported on the similarity of their son and daughter to same-gender and other-gender peers. Generalized estimating equations showed that more gender-typical appearance of parents was associated with more gender-typical appearance of girls, but not of boys. No differences were found between mothers and fathers for the association between parent and child appearance. Moreover, children's gender similarity, evident in parents' perceived similarity of their child to peers of the same gender and dissimilarity to peers of the other gender, was associated with more gender-typical appearance in children. Background and Study Aim Since its inception in 1988, the EUROFIT database network has expanded significantly. This expansion has facilitated the use of standardized test batteries to evaluate physical fitness across diverse groups. This study therefore aimed to determine possible differences in EUROFIT scores between rural and urban male children in Kosovo aged 7 to 11 years and to suggest the underlying factors besides the differences. Material and Methods The study involved 500 schoolchildren from Kosovo, both rural and urban, aged between 7 and 11 years. They were equally distributed within the total sample. Measurements were conducted using EUROFIT and anthropometric tests. The results were subsequently analyzed and compared using a Student's t-test. Results The data revealed that urban children have a better starting point, benefiting from greater access to organized physical activities. Their diets, while less healthy, may enhance physical power. The rural environment fosters healthier growth and skill development in boys, particularly before and during the onset of puberty. Conclusions Urban children should maintain their regular organized physical activities throughout the school period. This will help them match their rural peers in terms of motor and functional abilities. However, morphological traits are becoming more similar between these groups as they enter the prepubertal stage. Future studies should investigate potential differences in female samples. There is a global concern regarding boys' poor engagement in literacy activities. It is suggested that boys enjoy ways of learning that are active and have explicit goals. Readers' theater (RT) provides an active and collaborative means of practicing oral reading fluency, with a clear goal of performing for an audience at the end of training. In the context of an intervention study for struggling readers in grades 3 and 4 (9–10 years old), we investigated whether boys benefit more than girls from the goal to perform in readers' theater in terms of reading fluency development, engagement, and retrospective perception of their learning. We found that girls slightly outperformed boys in expressive reading and showed higher engagement in RT. Girls were also more interested in drama and more likely to participate in the study. However, boys showed a larger reduction in RT-related disaffection over time. In addition, boys in the goal-oriented program reported learning to act and immerse themselves in the text more often than boys in the practice-oriented RT. In contrast, girls reported learning these skills also in the practice-oriented RT. We conclude that the goal to perform in RT may be particularly helpful in engaging boys in RT. Objective: To determine whether girls and boys with ADHD show distinct impairments in components of cognitive control across multiple tasks (go/no-go, stop signal, and flanker) and performance metrics (response speed, variability, and errors). Method: A total of 300 children, ages 8 to 12 years with ADHD (n = 210, 58 girls) or typically developing (TD; n = 99, 37 girls), completed all tasks. Traditional response measures (e.g., mean and standard deviation of reaction time, inhibition errors, and stop signal reaction time) and ex-Gaussian modeling of reaction times (mu, sigma, and tau) were analyzed. Results: Girls showed intact response inhibition in the context of slower response speed, while boys made more inhibition errors and did not slow their response speed. Both girls and boys with ADHD showed higher response variability and poorer interference control than TD children. Conclusion: Girls and boys with ADHD show distinct impairments in cognitive control that may be important for understanding the pathophysiology of ADHD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Significant changes in the nutrition and physical fitness of children and adolescents have been observed in many countries around the world. The purpose of this study is to determine the changes in the prevalence of underweight, normal BMI, and overweight, as well as in the physical fitness of girls and boys from eastern Poland. Materials and methods: The study was conducted over the years 2006–2021. BMI was calculated, and physical fitness was assessed using the EUROFIT test. The results were statistically analyzed. Results: Minor changes in underweight were observed, and even a re-duction in its prevalence among girls was noted. However, a significant increase in the frequency of overweight was identified. Meanwhile, a decrease in the level of physical fitness in both girls and boys was recorded. These changes, however, were not uniform across all fitness abilities. Conclusions: The systematic decline in physical fitness among the examined girls and boys, particularly in cardiovascular-respiratory endurance, underscores the necessity for continued regular monitoring of the health of children and adolescents. Existing across multiple media platforms, Barstool Sports ("Barstool") is one of the most important sport brands in the United States. While Barstool's critics frequently assert that the company is "racist," few, if any, detail how their racial politics work. Through a brief genealogy of Barstool's cultural history and a close critical reading of "The Barstool Documentary Series," we show how Barstool's racial politics operate through gender—specifically the affective appeal of Big Man sovereignty and the homosocial bonds of White fratriarchy —to create and normalize racially exclusive and White male-dominant social worlds that dovetail remarkably with racial and gender ideas that organize what Maskovsky calls Trump's "White nationalist postracialism" and the Proud Boys' "Western chauvinism." Abstract Background Mental health problems among adolescents is a global challenge. During the transition to adolescence, physiological, psychological, and social changes occur, leading to increased vulnerability. Thus, adolescent boys are less likely to seek help for mental health problems, which makes them an undetected group. The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of adolescent boys’ experiences of mental health and school health service. Methods An inductive, qualitative design was chosen using three focus group interviews and three individual interviews. The study included 18 adolescent boys in 7th grade, in a school located in a medium-sized municipality in Norway. The interviews were analysed with qualitative content analysis. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) were followed in this study. Results The overall theme “barriers towards seeking help”, and three categories— navigating stigma and privacy concerns; perceptions of self-responsibility; and lacking knowledge of mental health problems and help-seeking—described the adolescent boys experiences. The awareness and willingness to seek help were present, but there are barriers preventing the adolescent boys from acting on that willingness. Conclusions Lack of knowledge and a non-permissive culture for mental health problems among adolescents contributes to decreased help-seeking behaviour among adolescent boys. The school health service is the most related health service for adolescents and should focus on being available and strengthening empowerment and mental health literacy through the development and implementation of interventions to promote mental health.

Introduction: Ferritin has been implicated in body physiology and pathology. Smoking cigarettes (Cg) alters ferritin metabolism. Waterpipe (Wp) smoking has recently reemerged as a global epidemic and is linked to the most devastating diseases. However, the effect of smoking Wp on ferritin is not known. Therefore, the current study compared plasma ferritin in adolescents smoking Cg, Wp, both (CgWp) versus never smoked. Material and methods: Self-reported smoking status and plasma ferritin levels were obtained from 849 boys (n = 470) and girls (n = 379) in the 7th-10th grade (age range = 13-17 years). Results: The ANCOVA revealed a main effect for gender (p < 0.000) and smoking status (p < 0.02) without an interaction effect (p > 0.9). Post-hoc analysis showed greater plasma ferritin in the adolescents smoking Wp (p < 0.03) and CgWp (p < 0.004) versus never smoked. Gender-stratified ANCOVA showed a main effect for smoking status in the boys (p < 0.02) and girls (p < 0.03). Additional comparisons among the boys showed greater plasma ferritin in the Wp (p < 0.006) and CgWp (p < 0.008) smoking groups versus never smoking, without differences (p > 0.5) between Wp and CgWp smoking. Another subgroup comparison showed greater plasma ferritin in the girls smoking Cg (p < 0.02) and CgWp (p < 0.02) versus never smoking, without a difference (p > 0.3) between Cg and CgWp smoking. Conclusions: The results indicate that ferritin is elevated in adolescent smokers, particularly the boys smoking Wp and CgWp and in the girls smoking Cg and CgWp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is a popular treatment that targets emotional dysregulation, a key feature associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The majority of available literature exploring the effectiveness of DBT is based on research concerning female samples. Therefore, the application and efficacy of DBT as a treatment intervention for men and boys remains unclear. Methods: Multiple research databases were searched using a systematic review process for articles that reported on the use of DBT with male samples across any outcome measure and included pre‐ and post‐treatment symptom scores. Results: Nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies indicated that the application of DBT to male samples varies. Vast differences were found in treatment length, use of DBT modes and population settings. Most studies identified some benefits of DBT; however, the sample sizes were small and there was large heterogeneity across the studies. Conclusions: There is preliminary evidence supporting the use of DBT for males, specifically targeting anger and violence as well as emotional dysregulation and suicidality. Despite this, the limitations and heterogeneity from the current studies preclude the current review from drawing any definitive conclusions about the overall efficacy of the treatment in this population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of biological sex, independent of differences in aerobic fitness and body fatness, on the change in gastrointestinal temperature (ΔTgi) and whole body sweat rate (WBSR) of children exercising under uncompensable heat stress. Seventeen boys (means ± SD; 13.7 ± 1.3 yr) and 18 girls (13.7 ± 1.4 yr) walked for 45 min at a fixed rate of metabolic heat production per kg body mass (8 W·kg−1) in 40°C and 30% relative humidity. Sex and peak oxygen consumption (V̇ o 2peak) were entered into a Bayesian hierarchical general additive model (HGAM) for Tgi. Sex, V̇ o 2peak, and the evaporative requirement for heat balance (Ereq) were entered into a Bayesian hierarchical linear regression for WBSR. For 26 (12 M and 14 F) of the 35 children with measured body composition, body fat percentage was entered in a separate HGAM and hierarchical linear regression for Tgi and WBSR, respectively. Conditional on sex-specific mean V̇ o 2peak, ΔTgi was 1.00°C [90% credible intervals (Crl): 0.84, 1.16] for boys and 1.17°C [1.01, 1.33] for girls, with a difference of 0.17°C [−0.39, 0.06]. When sex differences in V̇ o 2peak were accounted for, the difference in ΔTgi between boys and girls was 0.01°C [−0.25, 0.22]. The difference in WBSR between boys and girls was 0.03 L·h−1 [−0.02, 0.07], when isolated from differences in Ereq. The difference in ΔTgi between boys and girls was −0.10°C [−0.38, 0.17] when sex differences in body fat (%) were accounted for. Biological sex did not independently influence the ΔTgi and WBSR of children exercising under uncompensable heat stress. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: Limited studies have investigated the thermoregulatory responses of boys and girls exercising under uncompensable heat stress. Boys and girls often differ in physiological characteristics other than biological sex, such as aerobic fitness and body fat percentage, which may confound interpretations. In 2019, French health authorities extended the recommendation for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination to include boys aged 11 to 19 years. We describe HPV vaccination practices among French general practitioners (GPs) since this recommendation wasapplied. We also identified factors associated with the propensity to propose HPV vaccination to boys. Cross-sectional study, between May and August 2022, among French GPs using a questionnaire asking about the GPs, their practices, and opinions regarding HPV vaccination, including whether they systematically proposed HPV vaccination to eligible boys or not. We investigated factors associated with systematic proposal of HPV vaccination, using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. In total, 360 GPs participated (76.6% females; mean age 34.7 ± 7.8 years; 22.9% had additional training in gynecology or pediatrics); 5.5% reported that they systematically offered HPV vaccination to boys prior to the recommendation, whereas 61.2% do so systematically since the recommendation. Factors associated with systematic proposal to boys (post recommendation) were female GP sex (78.6% versus 66.2%; OR = 2.0 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2–3.3]; p = 0.007) and systematic proposal prior to the recommendation (8.5% versus 0.7%; OR = 13.3 [1.7–101.7]; p = 0.01). Protection against HPV-induced cancer was cited as an argument to vaccinate girls (98.3% versus 89.2%; p < 0.0001); while reducing the risk of transmission was more commonly an argument to vaccinate boys (78.1% versus 51.8%; p < 0.0001). This study underlines the positive impact of the official recommendation for HPV vaccination of boys on the attitude of GPs, with an increase in the systematic proposal of HPV vaccination to boys. Recent work suggests that the stereotype associating brilliance with men may underpin women's underrepresentation in prestigious careers, yet little is known about its development and consequences in non‐Western contexts. The present research examined the onset of this stereotype and its relation to children's motivation in 5‐ to 7‐year‐old Korean children (N = 272, 50% girls, tested 2021 to 2022). At age 7, children attributed brilliance to men when evaluating Asians and Whites, and girls became less interested in participating in intellectually challenging tasks than boys. Notably, this gender difference in interest was mediated by children's endorsement of the stereotype. Background: Post-activation potentiation (PAP) describes the enhancement of twitch torque following a conditioning contraction (CC) in skeletal muscle. In adults, PAP may be related to muscle fibre composition and is accompanied by a decrease in motor unit (MU) firing rates (MUFRs). Muscle fibre composition and/or activation is different between children and adults. This study examined PAP and MU firing patterns of the potentiated knee extensors in boys and men. Methods: Twenty-three boys (10.5 ± 1.3 years) and 20 men (23.1 ± 3.3 years) completed familiarization and experimental sessions. Maximal isometric evoked-twitch torque and MU firing patterns during submaximal contractions (20% and 70% maximal voluntary isometric contraction, MVIC) were recorded before and after a CC (5 s MVIC). PAP was calculated as the percent-increase in evoked-twitch torque after the CC. MU firing patterns were examined during submaximal contractions before and after the CC using Trigno Galileo surface electrodes (Delsys Inc) and decomposition algorithms (NeuroMap, Delsys Inc). MU action potential amplitudes (MUAPamp) and MUFRs were calculated for each MU and exponential MUFR-MUAPamp relationships were calculated for each participant and trial. Results: PAP was higher in men than in boys (98.3 ± 37.1% vs. 68.8 ± 18.3%, respectively; p = 0.002). Following potentiation, the rate of decay of the MUFR-MUAPamps relationship decreased in both contractions, with a greater decrease among boys during the high-intensity contractions. Conclusion: Lower PAP in the boys did not coincide with smaller changes in potentiated MU firing patterns, as boys had greater reductions in MUFRs with potentiation compared with men in high-intensity contractions. Cross-education has been studied extensively with adults, examining the training effects on contralateral homologous muscles. There is less information on the cross-education effects on contralateral heterologous muscles and scant information comparing these responses between adults and youth. The objective was to compare cross-education training effects in male youth and adults to contralateral homologous and heterologous muscles. Forty-two male children (10-13-years) and 42 adults (18-21-years) were tested before and following an 8-week unilateral, dominant or nondominant arm, chest press (CP) training program or control group (14 subjects each). Unilateral testing assessed dominant and nondominant limb strength with leg press and CP 1 repetition maximum (1RM), knee extensors, elbow extensors (EE), elbow flexors, and handgrip maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) strength and shot put distance and countermovement jump height. Upper-body tests demonstrated large magnitude increases, with children overall exceeding adults (p = 0.05- p < 0.0001, η² : 0.51, 10.4 ± 11.1%). The dominant trained limb showed significantly higher training adaptations than the nondominant limb for the adults with CP 1RM ( p = 0.03, η² : 0.26, 6.7 ± 11.5%) and EE ( p = 0.008, η² : 0.27, 8.8 ± 10.3%) MVIC force. Unilateral CP training induced significantly greater training adaptations with the ipsilateral vs. contralateral limb ( p = 0.008, η² : 0.93, 27.8 ± 12.7%). In conclusion, children demonstrated greater training adaptations than adults, upper-body strength increased with no significant lower-body improvements, and ipsilateral training effects were greater than contralateral training in adults. This paper analyses whether living in a locality with high crime against women affects the probability of early marriage—that is, marriage before the legal age of marriage of girls. Using a nationally representative longitudinal data set and tackling the potential endogeneity of local crime rates, we find that perceived crime against women in the locality significantly increases the likelihood of early marriage of girls, while there is no such effect on boys of comparable age group. We also find no such effect of gender-neutral crimes (such as theft and robbery) on the likelihood of early marriage of girls. Moreover, we find that the relationship holds only in conservative households where the purdah system is practised, and also in the northern region of India, where patriarchal culture and gender norms are stronger than in the southern region. A sensitivity analysis assessing the potential impact of unobservable confounders suggests that our estimates are unlikely to be affected by omitted variable bias. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
