2. Short gamma ray bursts: formation and offsets

Abstract

Short gamma ray bursts have been observed a variety of galaxies types with varying angular offsets from the centre of their host galaxies. To investigate the properties of short gamma ray burst offsets, a sample of short gamma ray bursts with host galaxies has been gathered. Two formation channels proposed to explain the observed offsets of short gamma ray bursts from their host galaxies are discussed. The classification of short gamma ray bursts into these formation channels is demonstrated for short gamma ray bursts with host galaxies. The possibility of faint dwarf galaxies as host environments for the observed short gamma ray bursts is also investigated. However, by extrapolating the distribution of dwarf galaxies around the Milky Way to redshifts corresponding to the short gamma ray bursts, we show that it is unlikely that dwarf galaxies are the hosts of short gamma ray bursts., Comment: undergrad project, 7 pages, 3 figures, MNRAS style

Describes a study of student understanding of science and scientists using illustrations to promote discussion. The study utilized both quantitative and qualitative techniques and involved 121 Malaysian students in elementary and high school. Results reveal that stereotypical views of science and scientists are evident. However, students often realized there was no difference in abilities between males and females. (PR)

Abstract

Individuals with AIDS often develop pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis carinii. The pneumonia is most commonly treated with either high doses of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole or pentamidine. However, because both therapies may cause toxic side effects, other treatments are needed. The effectiveness of the drug dapsone (diaminodiphenylsulfone) was evaluated as a single treatment for pneumocystis pneumonia in patients with AIDS. Although the drug did not cause any adverse effects, it was not very effective, successfully treating only 61 percent of 18 patients. Studies have suggested that a higher dose of dapsone may be more effective, specifically 200 milligrams per day instead of the previous dose of 100 milligrams per day. Seven AIDS patients with mild cases of pneumocystis pneumonia were treated with 200 milligrams of dapsone daily. On the fifth day of treatment, two patients suffered respiratory failure and died. Four others experienced major adverse effects, such as difficulty breathing, kidney problems, internal bleeding, anemia and high fever. The study was ended prematurely because of the toxic reactions and lack of evidence of effective treatment for pneumocystis pneumonia. Patients had received 5 to 14 days of treatment with dapsone. These findings demonstrate that dapsone, administered as a single agent in high doses, is not effective and should not be used to treat Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in patients with AIDS. Abstract

The delivery of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) requires the simultaneous movement of the linear accelerator gantry, multi-leaf collimators and jaws while the dose rate is varied. In this study, a VMAT delivery emulator was developed to accurately predict the characteristics of a given treatment plan, incorporating realistic parameters for gantry inertia and the variation in leaf speed with respect to gravity. The emulator was used to assess the impact of dynamic machine parameters on the delivery efficiency, using a set of prostate and head and neck VMAT plans. Initially, assuming a VMAT system with fixed dose rate bins, the allowable leaf and jaw speeds were increased and a significant improvement in treatment time and average dose rate was observed. The software was then adapted to simulate a VMAT system with continuously varying dose rate, and the increase in delivery efficiency was quantified, along with the impact of an increased leaf and jaw speed. Finally, a set of optimal dynamic machine parameters was derived assuming an idealized scenario in which the treatment is delivered in a single arc at constant maximum gantry speed. © 2011 Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.

49. Rural school principals’ perceptions of social justice in neo-liberal times: towards a pluralistic notion of rural education

Abstract

In this paper I apply the theory of social justice to evidence drawn from interviews with two rural school principals in Victoria. I examine the perceptions of social justice held by these principals to analyse the pressing issues that rural schools and their principals face in their quest to provide a socially-just education. The importance of seeking principals’ responses is based on their crucial position in leading their school culture and in responding to policies that define the educational landscape. In the last two decades, educational policies have been shaped by the dominant vision of restructuring the Australian economy to compete in a tougher international market, replacing the former dominant vision of social justice and equal opportunity with one based on managerialism, productivity and competition. Neo-liberal managerialist discourses and practices of perfomativity, testing and accountability now play a central function in determining principals’ role in schools. These discourses and practices have the potential to affect how principals conceptualise social justice and, in turn, how they apply it to practices in favour of a more socially-just schooling. In this paper, I argue that rural schools still face relevant issues of unjust distribution of resources, participation in policy making and cultural recognition and that rural education needs to engage with a pluralistic view of what social justice is: one that includes three dimensions – distributive, associational and recognitial justice.
