Experimental data on carbon nanotube carpet and synthetic opals have been compared by visible, infrared spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. Spectral features of the objects under study in infrared region are registered. Three regions of abnormal behavior of reflectance and absorbance for carbon nanotube carpet and two regions for opals in the 7000-2000 cm-1 are observed in comparison with the separated nanotubes or SiO2 globules in disordered states and/or condensed state. The spectroscopic features of the photonic crystals caused by their different microstructures at different length scales and basis for development of a proper model for light propagation through the photonic crystals in the IR region are presented for discussion., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures

Small clusters of the As/Sb-S/Se system that is of importance for simulation of elementary structure units of chalcogenide glasses are calculated using DFT technique. Different structures of As2Xn- and Sb2Xn- (X=S,Se) with proper hydrogen termination are compared by the total electronic energy values. The most stable As-X structures are of corner-sharing (CS) type (i.e. the elementary AsX3-pyramids linked via one X atom, and in the case of Sb-X family a new asymmetrical Sb2Se3 cluster appears rather than its compact (C3h) form., Comment: 6 pages including 1 figure

A structure of germanium selenide glasses is simulated by the featured clusters built from the tetrahedral GeSe4 units up to the clusters with six germanium atoms (Ge6Se16H4 and Ge6Se16H8). Quantum chemical calculations at the DFT level with effective core potentials for Ge and Se atoms for the clusters of different composition reveal their relative stability and optical properties., Comment: 5 pages, 3 Figures included

The use of photonic crystals, which were fabricated on the basis of synthetic opals, as substrates for the luminescence microscopy of biological objects has been shown. The spatial distributions of the photoluminescence by DNA clusters excited by 365-nm ultraviolet irradiation on opal surfaces and rough gold substrates have been studied. With the use of blood cells as an example, a possibility for the visualization of biological objects in the case where the nanostructure elements of synthetic opals are applied as labels and image amplifiers has been demonstrated.

A comparison of the secondary emission (photoluminescence) and Bragg reflection spectra of photonic crystals (PC), namely, synthetic opals, opals infiltrated by colloidal gold, glycine, and a complex of colloidal gold with glycine is performed. The infiltration of colloidal gold and a complex of colloidal gold with glycine into the pores of PC causes a short-wavelength shift (about 5-15 nm) of the Bragg reflection and increases the intensity of this band by 1.5-3 times. In photoluminescence, the infiltration of PC by colloidal gold and colloidal gold with glycine suppresses the PC emission band near 375-450 nm and enhances the shoulder of the stop-zone band of PC in the region of 470-510 nm. The shape of the observed PC emission band connected with defects in synthetic opal is determined by the type of infiltrates and the excitation wavelength. Possible mechanisms of the effects are discussed.

We present the results of a computer simulation of the atomic structures of large-angle symmetrical tilt grain boundaries (GBs) $\Sigma 5$ (misorientation angles $\q{36.87}{^{\circ}}$ and $\q{53.13}{^{\circ}}$), $\Sigma 13$ (misorientation angles $\q{22.62}{^{\circ}}$ and $\q{67.38}{^{\circ}}$). The critical strain level $\epsilon_{crit}$ criterion (phenomenological criterion) of Chisholm and Pennycook is applied to the computer simulation data to estimate the thickness of the nonsuperconducting layer ${\rm h_n}$ enveloping the grain boundaries. The ${\rm h_n}$ is estimated also by a bond-valence-sum analysis. We propose that the phenomenological criterion is caused by the change of the bond lengths and valence of atoms in the GB structure on the atomic level. The macro- and micro- approaches become consistent if the $\epsilon_{crit}$ is greater than in earlier papers. It is predicted that the symmetrical tilt GB $\Sigma5$ $\theta = \q{53.13}{^{\circ}}$ should demonstrate a largest critical current across the boundary., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

We analyze consequences of dynamical modulations of Josephson current by non-polar lattice mode in the Josephson junction barrier. In the high $T_c$ junctions, the effect of such modulations can be anomalously strong due to the proximity of the insulating barrier to the superconducting state. Accordingly, the interconversion of sound (as well as other non-polar phonons) and the Josephson plasma oscillations mediated by stationary Josephson currents, which may be present in the junction due to various reasons, becomes possible. We suggest that this effect can be employed for imaging of the stationary Josephson currents. Estimates of the effect are given., Comment: 11 RevTeX pages, no figures
