How extravagant ornamental traits evolve is a key question in evolutionary biology. Bird plumages are among the most elaborate ornaments, displaying almost all colours of the rainbow. Why and how birds evolved to be so colourful remains an open question with multiple and sometimes competing hypotheses. Different colours in different patches (i.e. body parts) might have different functions and thus result from different forms of selection (e.g. natural vs. sexual selection). Here we test the influence of three factors on colour diversity in sunbirds: (1) geographical distance, (2) differences in light environment and (3) phylogenetic distances. We show that both natural and sexual selection affect the evolution of sunbird colouration, but that their extent and direction differs between sexes, and varies with the extent of species overlap and across different patches on the body. Even though overlap in light environment partially explains colour differences among species, no colour metric (brightness, hue or chroma) covaries with light environment. Our results suggest that multiple forms of selection influence the colouration of different colour patches in different ways across an organism's body, highlighting the need to investigate colouration as a network of individual but inter‐connected colour patches. Fishes belonging to the family Clinidae in South Africa display super‐embryonation, a rare reproductive mode were females gestate broods at different gestational stages, but little is known regarding the mating systems of this family. Here we tested the hypothesis that multiple males would contribute not only to the offspring of each female, but that several males would contribute to each brood, by sampling Muraenoclinus dorsalis from three sampling locations along the west and south‐west coast of South Africa. Larval (n = 97) and maternal (n = 14) genotpyes, generated with newly developed microsatellites, were used to estimate the number of potential mates per female. Our results show that up to 78% of females displayed multiple mating with an average of 2·1–2·2 males. In addition, 39–42% of females displayed polyandry with an average of 1·5–1·6 sires per brood. This study provides the evidence for multiple mating and polyandry within a clinid fish characterized by super‐embryonation that offers important baseline information regarding rare reproductive strategies, highlighting several gaps in our knowledge concerning clinid reproduction and mating systems. Biochemical and molecular species identification techniques have a broad range of applications in the management and conservation of marine organisms. While species boundaries are not always clearly defined, phylogeneticists utilise autapomorphic characters to distinguish phylogenetic species. Genetic markers discriminate between marine taxa when traditional morphological distinctions are unclear. The applications of these techniques can be divided into four general categories.Firstly, compliance enforcement, which often depends on genetic identification techniques to enable officials to identify the species to which regulations pertain. Secondly, quality control applications, toallow for the testing of marine products to guard against fraudulentsubstitution with less valuable species, which is particularly pertinent since processing often obliterates identifiable features. Thirdly, a variety of applications to ecological and life-history studies and conservation management are reported. Here, the genetic identification techniques of species from cryptic life-cycle stages or of morphologically indistinct species are an indispensable tool for marine scientists, conservators and managers. Lastly, the application of genetic techniques for sourcing population origin is briefly discussed. The biochemical and molecular techniques applied to species identification all exploit phenotypic or genotypic polymorphisms that are sampled using either tertiary level protein based methods or primary level DNA based methods. In this review, examples of the applications alongwith the total protein, allozyme, serological, PCR and other DNA based methodologies are briefly described and some generalities with regard to their use are presented.
