We present new room-temperature 1100 - 1800 cm^{-1} spectra of melilite silicates and 600 - 2000 cm^{-1} spectra of three randomly orientated fine-grained carbonates to determine the possible carrier(s) of a 6.9~micron absorption feature observed in a variety of dense astronomical environments including young stellar objects and molecular clouds. We focus on the low-mass post-AGB star Sakurai's Object which has been forming substantial quantities of carbonaceous dust since an eruptive event in the 1990s. Large melilite grains cannot be responsible for the 6.9-micron absorption feature because the similarly-shaped feature in the laboratory spectrum was produced by very low (0.1 per cent by mass) carbonate contamination which was not detected at other wavelengths. Due to the high band-strength of the 6.9-micron feature in carbonates, we conclude that carbonates carry the astronomical 6.9~micron feature. Replacement of melilite with carbonates in models of Sakurai's object improves fits to the 6 - 7-micron Spitzer spectra without significantly altering other conclusions of Bowey's previous models except that there is no link between the feature and the abundance of melilite in meteorites. With magnesite (MgCO3), the abundance of 25-micron-sized SiC grains is increased by 10 - 50 per cent and better constrained. The mass of carbonate dust is similar to the mass of PAH dust. Existing experiments suggest carbonates are stable below 700~K, however it is difficult to ascertain the applicability of these experiments to astronomical environments and more studies are required., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this era of spatially resolved observations of planet forming disks with ALMA and large ground-based telescopes such as the VLT, Keck and Subaru, we still lack statistically relevant information on the quantity and composition of the material that is building the planets, such as the total disk gas mass, the ice content of dust, and the state of water in planetesimals. SPICA is an infrared space mission concept developed jointly by JAXA and ESA to address these questions. The key unique capabilities of SPICA that enable this research are (1) the wide spectral coverage 10-220 micron, (2) the high line detection sensitivity of (1-2) 10-19 W m-2 with R~2000-5000 in the far-IR (SAFARI) and 10-20 W m-2 with R~29000 in the mid-IR (SMI, spectrally resolving line profiles), (3) the high far-IR continuum sensitivity of 0.45 mJy (SAFARI), and (4) the observing efficiency for point source surveys. This paper details how mid- to far-IR infrared spectra will be unique in measuring the gas masses and water/ice content of disks and how these quantities evolve during the planet forming period. These observations will clarify the crucial transition when disks exhaust their primordial gas and further planet formation requires secondary gas produced from planetesimals. The high spectral resolution mid-IR is also unique for determining the location of the snowline dividing the rocky and icy mass reservoirs within the disk and how the divide evolves during the build-up of planetary systems. Infrared spectroscopy (mid- to far-IR) of key solid state bands is crucial for assessing whether extensive radial mixing, which is part of our Solar System history, is a general process occurring in most planetary systems and whether extrasolar planetesimals are similar to our Solar System comets/asteroids. ... Pyroxene crystals are common in meteorites but few compositions have been recognized in astronomical environments. We present quantitative room-temperature spectra of 17 Mg-- Fe-- and Ca--bearing ortho- and clinopyroxenes, and a Ca-pyroxenoid in order to discern trends indicative of crystal structure and a wide range of composition. Data are produced using a Diamond Anvil Cell: our band strengths are up to 6 times higher than those measured in KBr or polyethylene dispersions, which include variations in path length (from grain size) and surface reflections that are not addressed in data processing. Pyroxenes have varied spectra: only two bands, at 10.22~$\mu$m and 15.34~$\mu$m in enstatite (En$_{99}$), are common to all. Peak-wavelengths generally increase as Mg is replaced by Ca or Fe. However, two bands in MgFe-pyroxenes shift to shorter wavelengths as the Fe component increases from 0 to 60 per cent. A high-intensity band shifts from 11.6~$\mu$m to 11.2~$\mu$m and remains at 11.2~$\mu$m as Fe increases to 100~per~cent; it resembles an astronomical feature normally identified with olivine or forsterite. The distinctive pyroxene bands between 13~ and 16~$\mu$m show promise for their identification in MIRI spectra obtained with JWST. The many pyroxene bands between 40 and 80~$\mu$m could be diagnositic of silicate mineralogy if data were obtained with the proposed SPICA telescope. Our data indicate that comparison between room-temperature laboratory bands for enstatite and cold $\sim 10-K$ astronomical dust features at wavelengths $\gtrsim 28~\mu$m can result in the identification of (Mg,Fe)- pyroxenes that contain 7--15 % less Fe-- than their true values because some temperature shifts mimic some compositional shifts. We present late-time optical and mid-infrared observations of the Type-II supernova 2003gd in NGC 628. Mid-infrared excesses consistent with cooling dust in the ejecta are observed 499-678 days after outburst, and are accompanied by increasing optical extinction and growing asymmetries in the emission-line profiles. Radiative-transfer models show that up to 0.02 solar masses of dust has formed within the ejecta, beginning as early as 250 days after outburst. These observations show that dust formation in supernova ejecta can be efficient and that massive-star supernovae can be major dust producers throughout the history of the Universe., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure. Dust emission from the Type II supernova SN 2002hh in NGC 6946 has been detected at mid-infrared wavelengths by the Spitzer Space Telescope from 590 to 758 days after outburst and confirmed by higher angular resolution Gemini-N mid-IR observations. The day-600 5.8-24 micron emission can be fit by a 290-K blackbody having a luminosity of 1.6E+7 L_Sol. The minimum emitting radius of 1.1E+17 cm is too large for the emitting dust to have been formed in the supernova ejecta. Using radiative transfer models and realistic dust grain parameters, fits to the observed flux distribution could be obtained with an optically thick dust shell having a mass of 0.10-0.15 M_Sol, corresponding to a total dust+gas mass in excess of 10 M_Sol, suggesting a massive M supergiant or luminous blue variable precursor to this self-obscured object., Comment: To be published in ApJ Letters [12 pages, 2 figures]

IRAS 16279-4757 belongs to a group of post-AGB stars showing both PAH bands and crystalline silicates. We present mid-infrared images, that resolve the object for the first time. The morphology is similar to that of the `Red Rectangle' (HD 44179), the prototype object with PAHs and crystalline silicates. A two-component model and images suggest a dense oxygen-rich torus, an inner, low-density carbon-rich region and a carbon-rich bipolar outflow. The PAH bands are enhanced at the outflow, while the continuum emission is concentrated towards the center. Our findings support the suggestion that mixed chemistry and morphology are closely related. We discuss the ISO/SWS spectra of IRAS 16279-4757. Several bands in the ISO/SWS spectrum show a match with anorthite: this would be the first detection of this mineral outside the solar system. Compared to HD 44179, the shapes of PAH bands are closer to those of planetary nebulae, possibly related to a population of small PAHs present HD 44179, but absent around IRAS 16279-4757. Detailed examination of the spectra shows the individual character of these two objects. The comparison suggests that the torus found in IRAS 16279-4757 may have formed more recently than that in HD 44179., Comment: accepted to ApJ

Far-infrared spectra of laboratory silicates are normally obtained at room temperature even though the grains responsible for astronomical silicate emission bands seen at wavelengths >20 micron are likely to be at temperatures below ~150 K. In order to investigate the effect of temperature on silicate spectra, we have obtained absorption spectra of powdered forsterite and olivine, along with two orthoenstatites and diopside clinopyroxene, at 3.5+-0.5 K and at room temperature (295+-2K). To determine the changes in the spectra the resolution must be increased from 1 to 0.25 cm^-1 at both temperatures since a reduction in temperature reduces the phonon density, thereby reducing the width of the infrared peaks. Several bands observed at 295 K split at 3.5 K. At 3.5 K the widths of isolated single bands in olivine, enstatites and diopside are ~ 90% of their 295 K-widths. However, in forsterite the 3.5-K-widths of the 31-, 49- and 69-micron bands are, respectively, 90%, 45% and 31% of their 295 K widths. Due to an increase in phonon energy as the lattice contracts, 3.5-K-singlet peaks occur at shorter wavelengths than do the corresponding 295-K peaks; the magnitude of the wavelength shift increases from \~ 0-0.2 micron at 25 micron to ~0.9 micron at 80 micron. Changes in the relative absorbances of spectral peaks are also observed. The temperature dependence of lambda_pk and bandwidth shows promise as a means to deduce characteristic temperatures of mineralogically distinct grain populations. Infrared spectral properties of silicate grains in interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) were compared with those of astronomical silicates. The approximately 10-micrometer silicon-oxygen stretch bands of IDPs containing enstatite (MgSiO3), forsterite (Mg2SiO4), and glass with embedded metal and sulfides (GEMS) exhibit fine structure and bandwidths similar to those of solar system comets and some pre-main sequence Herbig Ae/Be stars. Some GEMS exhibit a broad, featureless silicon-oxygen stretch band similar to those observed in interstellar molecular clouds and young stellar objects. These GEMS provide a spectral match to astronomical "amorphous" silicates, one of the fundamental building blocks from which the solar system is presumed to have formed.
