This ADiBE case study explores an innovative, integrated approach to addressing diversity in secondary classrooms in England, where more than one language is used and learned. We position diversity in multilingual and multicultural communities where schooling seeks to provide meaningful learning experiences for all students and guide learners towards being and becoming global citizens. Within a UK context, underpinning values emphasise social justice and inclusion embodied in classroom practices that actively involve teachers as researchers with their learners -- in terms of 'curriculum-making' and reinterpreting the impact of diversity on 'successful' learning communities. This research analyses contextual and exploratory factors that enable diverse learners with diverse needs to engage in learning partnerships with each other and their teachers. Using a framework to capture collaborative professional learning, synergies are explored between two different approaches to bilingual learning -- English as an Additional language (EAL) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). The case study identifies potentially rich sites for building pedagogic capital and explores how diversity can enable more young people to feel valued, respected and successful bilingual learners in formal schooling.

For many young children in developed countries, family and community life is mediated by digital technology. Despite this, for early years educators, the process of integrating digital technologies into classroom practice raises a number of issues and tensions. In an attempt to gain insights from early years teachers, we draw from semi-structured interview data from ten practising teachers which explored their perspectives on digital technologies within their personal and professional lives, and of children's use of digital technologies within and outside educational settings. Our analysis builds on previous work that suggests that teachers draw on multiple discourses related to conceptualisations of childhood when thinking about digital technology and young children. In this paper we contribute to these discussions, drawing specifically on examples from the data where teachers articulate their understandings of children's use of digital technology where this relates directly to children's literacy practices. We assert that narrow conceptualized notions of literacy, compounded by national imperatives to raise print literacy standards, add another layer of discursive complexity that comes to the fore when teachers are asked to provide a rationale for the promotion of digital literacies in early years classrooms. A broader framing of literacy therefore, is needed if the potential of digital technologies in the early years is to be realized.

This article reports part of an empirical research study undertaken in state secondary schools in England in 2012/2013, to investigate the extent to which Content and Integrated Learning (CLIL) promotes pupil motivation in the teaching of modern foreign languages (MFLs). Pupil perspectives of the impact of CLIL on their motivation are presented from two schools where different models of CLIL are practised. Firstly, a Partial Immersion Model of more than two subjects, for one Year 8 (Y8) mixed ability group, was taught for over six hours a week by a language teacher. Secondly, a curriculum Subject Strand Model was taught for one lesson per week by a geography specialist in Year 7 (Y7) and Y8 ability sets. Data are presented from student questionnaires and focus groups. This article offers a unique contribution to the field by its focus on pupil motivation linked to contrasting CLIL contexts in England. The findings reveal positive perceptions of CLIL methodology and high levels of concentration, effort, enjoyment and progress, especially in the Partial Immersion Model, where the depth of relationship and cooperation and the enhanced levels of linguistic competence both lead to greater pupil engagement and motivation.

Researching motivation in language learning is complex and multi-faceted. Various models of learner motivation have been proposed in the literature, but no one model supplies a complex and coherent framework for investigating a range of motivational characteristics. Building on previous models I propose such a methodological framework, based on a complex dynamic systems perspective, which re-conceptualises the investigation of motivation in second language acquisition in qualitative and mixed method approaches by offering one flexible tool for case study approaches. This new framework has been tried and tested in three locations in England and reported as case studies. The study aimed to address the following research questions: (1) In what ways does content and language integrated learning (CLIL) impact on learner motivation? (2) What are the main elements of CLIL that enhance motivation? Overall analysis of the results found that where expectations of success were high and where the teaching was effective, CLIL had a positive impact on motivation and progress. The framework is designed to be flexible enough to be used to investigate language learning in a range of national contexts. It is hoped that the proposed framework, reported here together with exemplification and commentary from the English study, will enable researchers in a wide range of language learning contexts to investigate learner motivation in a systematic and in-depth manner.

This article investigates school leader perspectives on Content and Integrated Learning (CLIL) based on findings from an empirical research study undertaken in three state secondary schools in England, to investigate (CLIL). The article argues the importance of the role of senior leaders in developing and sustaining CLIL initiatives. Perspectives about CLIL from 12 leaders are presented using semi-structured interviews from three schools where different models of CLIL are practised: headteachers, senior leaders responsible for the school oversight of such programmes and curriculum leaders responsible for developing the work in specific subjects. This article offers a unique contribution to the field by its focus on school leaders' perceptions of and commitment to CLIL from their involvement in contrasting CLIL contexts in the self-improving school context of England. There are no existing studies that focus on senior leaders' perspectives in the secondary sector. In spite of numerous limitations presented by the current national policy landscape, the findings reveal that school leaders perceive CLIL to make a potentially strong contribution to the pressing school improvement agenda through the acceleration of learner progress characterised by high levels of pupil concentration, effort, enjoyment and progress.
