Search

We report {\it HST} COS spectroscopy of 10 quasars with foreground star-forming galaxies at 0.02$<$$z$$<$ 0.14 within impact parameters of $\sim$1-7 kpc. We detect damped/sub-damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption in 100$\%$ of cases where no higher-redshift Lyman-limit systems extinguish the flux at the expected wavelength of Ly$\alpha$ absorption, obtaining the largest targeted sample of DLA/sub-DLAs in low-redshift galaxies. We present absorption measurements of neutral hydrogen and metals. Additionally, we present GBT 21-cm emission measurements for 5 of the galaxies (including 2 detections). Combining our sample with the literature, we construct a sample of 115 galaxies associated with DLA/sub-DLAs spanning 0$<$$z$$<$4.4, and examine trends between gas and stellar properties, and with redshift. The H~I column density is anti-correlated with impact parameter and stellar mass. More massive galaxies appear to have gas-rich regions out to larger distances. The specific SFR (sSFR) of absorbing galaxies increases with redshift and decreases with $M^{\ast}$, consistent with evolution of the star-formation main sequence (SFMS). However, $\sim$20$\%$ of absorbing galaxies lie below the SFMS, indicating that some DLA/sub-DLAs trace galaxies with longer-than-typical gas-depletion time-scales. Most DLA/sub-DLA galaxies with 21-cm emission have higher H I masses than typical galaxies with comparable $M^{\ast}$. High $M_{\rm H I}/M^{\ast}$ ratios and high sSFRs in DLA/sub-DLA galaxies with $M^{\ast}$$<$$10^{9}$$M_{\odot}$ suggest these galaxies may be gas-rich because of recent gas accretion rather than inefficient star formation. Our study demonstrates the power of absorption and emission studies of DLA/sub-DLA galaxies for extending galaxy-evolution studies to previously under-explored regimes of low $M^{\ast}$ and low SFR., Comment: 51 pages, 12 figures. We present an HST Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) spectrum of the QSO SDSS J095109.12+330745.8 ($z_{em} = 0.645$) whose sightline passes through the SMC-like dwarf galaxy UGC 5282 ($M_B = -16.0$, $cz = 1577$ km s$^{-1}$ ), 1.2 kpc in projection from the central HII region of the galaxy. Damped Ly$\alpha$ (DLA) absorption is detected at the redshift of UGC 5282 with $\log$[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}\:$] = 20.89$^{+0.12}_{-0.21}\:\:$. Analysis of the accompanying SII, PII and OI metal lines yields a neutral gas metallicity, $Z_{HI}$, of [S/H] $\simeq$ [P/H] $= -0.80\pm0.24$. The metallicity of ionized gas from the central HII region, $Z_{HII}\:$, measured from its emission lines is [O/H]$= -0.37\pm0.10$, a difference of $+0.43\pm 0.26$ from $Z_{HI}\:$. This difference $\delta$ is consistent with that seen towards HII regions in other star-forming galaxies and supports the idea that ionized gas near star forming regions shows systematically higher metallicities than exist in the rest of a galaxy's neutral interstellar medium (ISM). The positive values of $\delta$ found in UGC 5282 (and the other star forming galaxies) is likely due to infalling low metallicity gas from the intergalactic medium that mixes with the galaxy's ISM on kpc scales. This model is also consistent with broad Ly$\alpha$ emission detected at the bottom of the DLA absorption, offset by $\sim 125$ km s$^{-1}$ from the absorption velocity. Models of galaxy evolution that attempt to replicate population characteristics, such as the mass-metallicity relation, may need to start with a galaxy metallicity represented by $Z_{HI}$ rather than that measured traditionally from $Z_{HII}\:$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. Using Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph G140M spectroscopy, we investigate an absorption-line system at $z$=0.07489 in the spectrum of the quasi-stellar object PG 1543+489 ($z_{QSO}$=0.401). The sightline passes within $\rho = 66$ kpc of an edge-on $2L^*$ disk galaxy at a similar redshift, but the galaxy belongs to a group with four other galaxies within $\rho =160$ kpc. We detect H I [log $N$(H I/$cm^{-2}$) = 19.12$\pm$0.04] as well as N I, Mg II, Si II, and Si III, from which we measure a gas-phase abundance of [N/H] = $-1.0\pm 0.1$. Photoionization models indicate that the nitrogen-to-silicon relative abundance is solar, yet magnesium is underabundant by a factor of $\approx$ 2. We also report spatially resolved emission-line spectroscopy of the nearby galaxy, and we extract its rotation curve. The galaxy's metallicity is $\approx 8 \times$ higher than [N/H] in the absorber, and interestingly, the absorber velocities suggest that the gas at $\rho =$ 66 kpc is corotating with the galaxy's stellar disk, possibly with an inflow component. These characteristics could indicate that this sub-damped Ly$\alpha$ absorber system arises in a "cold-accretion" flow. However, the absorber abundance patterns are peculiar. We hypothesize that the gas was ejected from its galaxy of origin (or perhaps is a result of tidal debris from interactions between the group galaxies) with a solar nitrogen abundance, but that subsequently mixed with (and was diluted by) gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) or group. If the gas is bound to the nearby galaxy, this system may be an example of the gas "recycling" predicted by theoretical galaxy simulations. We present a search for HI in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of 21 massive ($\langle \log M_\star \rangle \sim 11.4$), luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at $z\sim0.5$. Using UV spectroscopy of QSO sightlines projected within 500 kpc ($\sim R_{vir}$) of these galaxies, we detect HI absorption in 11/21 sightlines, including two partial Lyman limit systems and two Lyman limit systems. The covering factor of $\log N(HI) \ge 16.0$ gas within the virial radius of these LRGs is $f_c(\rho \le R_{vir}) = 0.27^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$, while for optically-thick gas ($\log N(HI) \ge 17.2$) it is $f_c(\rho \le R_{vir}) = 0.15^{+0.10}_{-0.07}$. Combining this sample of massive galaxies with previous galaxy-selected CGM studies, we find no strong dependence of the HI covering factor on galaxy mass, although star-forming galaxies show marginally higher covering factors. There is no evidence for a critical mass above which dense, cold ($T \sim 10^4$ K) gas is suppressed in the CGM of galaxies (spanning stellar masses $9.5 \lesssim \log M_\star \lesssim 11.8$). The metallicity distribution in LRGs is indistinguishable from those found about lower-mass star-forming galaxies, and we find low-metallicity gas with $[{\rm X/H}] \approx -1.8$ (1.5% solar) and below about massive galaxies. About half the cases show super-solar [FeII/MgII] abundances as seen previously in cool gas near massive galaxies. We survey the highly ionized circumgalactic media (CGM) of 29 blindly selected galaxies at 0.49 < z_(gal) < 1.44 based on high-S/N ultraviolet spectra of z > 1 QSOs and the galaxy database from the COS Absorption Survey of Baryon Harbors (CASBaH). We detect the Ne VIII doublet in nine of the galaxies, and for gas with N(Ne VIII) > 10^13.3 cm^-2 (> 10^13.5 cm^-2), we derive a Ne VIII covering fraction f_c = 75 +15/-25% (44 +22/-20%) within impact parameter (rho) < 200 kpc of M_* = 10^(9.5-11.5) Msol galaxies and f_c = 70 +16/-22% (f_c = 42 +20/-17%) within rho < 1.5 virial radii. We estimate the mass in Ne VIII-traced gas to be M_gas(Ne VIII) > 10^9.5 Msol (Z/Zsol)^-1, or 6-20% of the expected baryonic mass if the Ne VIII absorbers have solar metallicity. Ionizing Ne VII to Ne VIII requires 207 eV, and photons with this energy are scarce in the CGM. However, for the median halo mass and redshift of our sample, the virial temperature is close to the peak temperature for the Ne VIII ion, and the Ne VIII-bearing gas is plausibly collisionally ionized near this temperature. Moreover, we find that photoionized Ne VIII requires cool and low-density clouds that would be highly underpressured (by approximately two orders of magnitude) relative to the putative, ambient virialized medium, complicating scenarios where such clouds could survive. Thus, more complex (e.g., non-equilibrium) models may be required; this first statistical sample of Ne VIII absorber/galaxy systems will provide stringent constraints for future CGM studies., Comment: Published in ApJL, Volume 877, Issue 2, Article L20

We analyze the intracluster medium (ICM) and circumgalactic medium (CGM) in 7 X-ray detected galaxy clusters using spectra of background QSOs (HST-COS/STIS), optical spectroscopy of the cluster galaxies (MMT/Hectospec and SDSS), and X-ray imaging/spectroscopy (XMM-Newton and Chandra). First, we report a very low covering fraction of H I absorption in the CGM of these cluster galaxies, f_c = 25% +25%/-15%, to stringent detection limits (log N(H I) < 13 cm^-2). As field galaxies have an H I covering fraction of ~100% at similar radii, the dearth of CGM H I in our data indicates that the cluster environment has effectively stripped or overionized the gaseous halos of these cluster galaxies. Second, we assess the contribution of warm-hot (10^5 - 10^6 K) gas to the ICM as traced by O VI and broad Ly-alpha (BLA) absorption. Despite the high signal-to-noise of our data, we do not detect O VI in any cluster, and we only detect BLA features in the QSO spectrum probing one cluster. We estimate that the total column density of warm-hot gas along this line of sight totals to ~3% of that contained in the hot T > 10^7 K X-ray emitting phase. Residing at high relative velocities, these features may trace pre-shocked material outside the cluster. Comparing gaseous galaxy halos from the low-density 'field' to galaxy groups and high-density clusters, we find that the CGM is progressively depleted of H I with increasing environmental density, and the CGM is most severely transformed in galaxy clusters. Using the Low Dispersion Survey Spectrograph 3 at the Magellan II Clay Telescope, we target {candidate absorption host galaxies} detected in deep optical imaging {(reaching limiting apparent magnitudes of 23.0-26.5 in $g, r, i,$ and $z$ filters) in the fields of three QSOs, each of which shows the presence of high metallicity, high $N_{\rm HI}$ absorption systems in their spectra (Q0826-2230: $z_{abs}$=0.9110, Q1323-0021: $z_{abs}=0.7160$, Q1436-0051: $z_{abs}=0.7377, 0.9281$). We confirm three host galaxies {at redshifts 0.7387, 0.7401, and 0.9286} for two of the Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption systems (one with two galaxies interacting). For these systems, we are able to determine the star formation rates (SFRs); impact parameters (from previous imaging detections); the velocity shift between the absorption and emission redshifts; and, for one system, also the emission metallicity.} Based on previous photometry, we find these galaxies have L$>$L$^{\ast}$. The [O II] SFRs for these galaxies are in the range $11-25$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ {(uncorrected for dust)}, while the impact parameters lie in the range $35-54$ kpc. {Despite the fact that we have confirmed galaxies at 50 kpc from the QSO, no gradient in metallicity is indicated between the absorption metallicity along the QSO line of sight and the emission line metallicity in the galaxies.} We confirm the anti-correlation between impact parameter and $N_{\rm HI}$ from the literature. Giant lobes of plasma extend 55 degrees above and below the Galactic Center, glowing in emission from gamma rays (the Fermi Bubbles) to microwaves (the WMAP haze) and polarized radio waves. We use ultraviolet absorption-line spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope to constrain the velocity of the outflowing gas within these regions, targeting the quasar PDS 456 (Galactic coordinates l,b=10.4, +11.2 degrees). This sightline passes through a clear biconical structure seen in hard X-ray and gamma-ray emission near the base of the northern Fermi Bubble. We report two high-velocity metal absorption components, at v_LSR=-235 and +250 km/s, which cannot be explained by co-rotating gas in the Galactic disk or halo. Their velocities are suggestive of an origin on the front and back side of an expanding biconical outflow emanating from the Galactic Center. We develop simple kinematic biconical outflow models that can explain these observed profiles with an outflow velocity of ~900 km/s and a full opening angle of ~110 degrees (matching the X-ray bicone). This indicates Galactic Center activity over the last ~2.5-4.0 Myr, in line with age estimates of the Fermi Bubbles. We present high-resolution HI 21 cm observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) for three HI rich galaxies in absorption against radio quasars. Our sample contains six sightlines with impact parameters from 2.6 to 32.4 kpc. We detected a narrow HI absorber of FWHM 1.1 km/s at 444.5 km/s towards J122106.854+454852.16 probing the dwarf galaxy UCG 7408 at an impact parameter of 2.8 kpc. The absorption feature was barely resolved and its width corresponds to a maximum kinetic temperature, $\rm T_k \approx 26~K$. We estimate a limiting peak optical depth of 1.37 and a column density of $\rm 6\times 10^{19}~cm^{-2}$. The physical extent of the absorber is $\rm 0.04~kpc^2$ and covers $\sim$25-30\% of the background source. A comparison between the emission and absorption strengths suggests the cold-to-total HI column density in the absorber is ~30%. Folding in the covering fraction, the cold-to-total HI mass is ~10%. This suggest that condensation of warm HI ($\rm T_s\sim 1000~K$) to cold phase ($\rm T_s < 100~K$) is suppressed in UGC 7408. The unusually low temperature of the HI absorber also indicates inefficiency in condensation of atomic gas into molecular gas. The suppression in condensation is likely to be the result of low-metal content in this galaxy. The same process might explain the low efficiency of star formation in dwarf galaxies despite their huge of gas reservoirs. We also report the non-detection of HI in absorption in five other sightlines. We take advantage of gravitational lensing amplification by Abell 1689 (z=0.187) to undertake the first space-based census of emission line galaxies (ELGs) in the field of a massive lensing cluster. Forty-three ELGs are identified to a flux of i_775=27.3 via slitless grism spectroscopy. One ELG (at z=0.7895) is very bright owing to lensing magnification by a factor of ~4.5. Several Balmer emission lines detected from ground-based follow-up spectroscopy signal the onset of a major starburst for this low-mass galaxy (M_* = 2 x 10^9 solar masses) with a high specific star formation rate (~20 /Gyr). From the blue emission lines we measure a gas-phase oxygen abundance consistent with solar (12+log(O/H)=8.8 +/- 0.2). We break the continuous line-emitting region of this giant arc into seven ~1kpc bins (intrinsic size) and measure a variety of metallicity dependent line ratios. A weak trend of increasing metal fraction is seen toward the dynamical center of the galaxy. Interestingly, the metal line ratios in a region offset from the center by ~1kpc have a placement on the blue HII region excitation diagram with f([OIII])/f(Hbeta) and f([NeIII])/f(Hbeta) that can be fit by an AGN. This asymmetrical AGN-like behavior is interpreted as a product of shocks in the direction of the galaxy's extended tail, possibly instigated by a recent galaxy interaction., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Outflowing winds of multiphase plasma have been proposed to regulate the buildup of galaxies, but key aspects of these outflows have not been probed with observations. Using ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, we show that "warm-hot" plasma at 10^{5.5} K contains 10-150 times more mass than the cold gas in a poststarburst galaxy wind. This wind extends to distances >68 kiloparsecs, and at least some portion of it will escape. Moreover, the kinematical correlation of the cold and warm-hot phases indicates that the warm-hot plasma is related to the interaction of the cold matter with a hotter (unseen) phase at >>10^{6} K. We describe a search for MgII(2796,2803) absorption lines in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra of QSOs whose lines of sight pass within impact parameters of 200 kpc of galaxies with photometric redshifts of z=0.46-0.6 and redshift errors Delta z~0.05. The galaxies selected have the same colors and luminosities as the Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) population previously selected from the SDSS. A search for Mg II lines within a redshift interval of +/-0.1 of a galaxy's photometric redshift shows that absorption by these galaxies is rare: the covering fraction is ~ 10-15% between 20 and 100 kpc, for Mg II lines with rest equivalent widths of Wr >= 0.6{\AA}, falling to zero at larger separations. There is no evidence that Wr correlates with impact parameter or galaxy luminosity. Our results are consistent with existing scenarios in which cool Mg II-absorbing clouds may be absent near LRGs because of the environment of the galaxies: if LRGs reside in high-mass groups and clusters, either their halos are too hot to retain or accrete cool gas, or the galaxies themselves - which have passively-evolving old stellar populations - do not produce the rates of star formation and outflows of gas necessary to fill their halos with Mg II absorbing clouds. In the rarer cases where Mg II is detected, however, the origin of the absorption is less clear. We argue that most strong intervening metal absorption line systems, where the rest equivalent width of the MgII 2796A line is >0.5A, are interstellar material in, and outflowing from, star-forming disks. We show that a version of the Kennicutt-Schmidt law is readily obtained if the MgII equivalent widths are interpreted as kinematic broadening from absorbing gas in outflowing winds originating from star-forming galaxies. Taking a phenomenological approach and using a set of observational constraints available for star-forming galaxies, we are able to account for the density distribution of strong MgII absorbers over cosmic time. The association of intervening material with star-forming disks naturally explains the metallicity and dust content of strong MgII systems as well as their high HI column densities, and does not require the advection of metals from compact star-forming regions into the galaxy halos to account for the observations. We find that galaxies with a broad range of luminosities can give rise to absorption of a given rest-equivalent width, and discuss possible observational strategies to better quantify true galaxy-absorber associations and further test our model. We show that the redshift evolution in the density of absorbers closely tracks the star formation history of the universe and that strong intervening systems can be used to directly probe the physics of both bright and faint galaxies over a broad redshift range. By identifying strong intervening systems with galaxy disks and quantifying a version of the Kennicutt-Schmidt law that applies to them, a new probe of the interstellar medium is found which provides complementary information to that obtained through emission studies of galaxies. We present an HI 21 cm absorption survey with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) of galaxy-quasar pairs selected by combining data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) survey. Our sample consists of 23 sightlines through 15 low-redshift foreground galaxy - background quasar pairs with impact parameters ranging from 1.7 kpc up to 86.7 kpc. We detected one absorber in the GBT survey from the foreground dwarf galaxy, GQ1042+0747, at an impact parameter of 1.7 kpc and another possible absorber in our follow-up Very Large Array (VLA) imaging of the nearby foreground galaxy, UGC 7408. Both of the absorbers are narrow (FWHM of 3.6 and 4.8 km/s), have sub Damped Lyman alpha column densities, and most likely originate in the disk gas of the foreground galaxies. We also detected H I emission from three foreground galaxies, including UGC 7408. Although our sample contains both blue and red galaxies, the two H I absorbers as well as the H I emissions are associated with blue galaxies. To search for low-redshift damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) and sub-DLA quasar absorbers, we have conducted a 21cm absorption survey of radio-loud quasars at small impact parameters to foreground galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here we present the first results from this survey based on observations of SDSS J104257.58+074850.5 ($z_{QSO}$ = 2.66521), a quasar at an angular separation from a foreground galaxy ($z_{gal}$ = 0.03321) of 2.5" (1.7 kpc in projection). The foreground galaxy is a low-luminosity spiral with on-going star formation (0.004 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$) and a metallicity of $-0.27 \pm 0.05$ dex. We detect 21cm absorption from the galaxy with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), the Very Large Array (VLA), and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The absorption appears to be quiescent disk gas corotating with the galaxy and we do not find any evidence for outflowing cold neutral gas. The width of the main absorption line indicates that the gas is cold, $T_{k} < 283$ K, and the HI column is surprisingly low given the impact parameter of 1.7 kpc; we find that N(HI) $\leq 9.6 \times 10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ (GBT) and N(HI) $\leq 1.5 \times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ (VLBA). VLBA marginally resolves the continuum source and the absorber, and a lower limit of 27.1 $\times$ 13.9 pc is derived for the size of the absorbing cloud. In turn, this indicates a low density for a cold cloud, n(HI) $<$ 3.5 cm$^{-3}$. We hypothesize that this galaxy, which is relatively isolated, is becoming depleted in HI because it is converting its interstellar matter into stars without a replenishing source of gas, and we suggest future observations to probe this and similar galaxies., Comment: 16 Pages including 12 Figures and 2 Tables

We present a high signal-to-noise spectrum of a bright galaxy at z = 4.9 in 14 h of integration on VLT FORS2. This galaxy is extremely bright, i_850 = 23.10 +/- 0.01, and is strongly-lensed by the foreground massive galaxy cluster Abell 1689 (z=0.18). Stellar continuum is seen longward of the Ly-alpha emission line at ~7100 \AA, while intergalactic H I produces strong absorption shortward of Ly-alpha. Two transmission spikes at ~6800 Angstroms (A) and ~7040 A are also visible, along with other structures at shorter wavelengths. Although fainter than a QSO, the absence of a strong central ultraviolet flux source in this star forming galaxy enables a measurement of the H I flux transmission in the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the vicinity of a high redshift object. We find that the effective H I optical depth of the IGM is remarkably high within a large 14 Mpc (physical) region surrounding the galaxy compared to that seen towards QSOs at similar redshifts. Evidently, this high-redshift galaxy is located in a region of space where the amount of H I is much larger than that seen at similar epochs in the diffuse IGM. We argue that observations of high-redshift galaxies like this one provide unique insights on the nascent stages of baryonic large-scale structures that evolve into the filamentary cosmic web of galaxies and clusters of galaxies observed in the present universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL (corrected typos)

We report on the detection of reddening toward z ~ 0.2 galaxy clusters. This is measured by correlating the Sloan Digital Sky Survey cluster and quasar catalogs and by comparing the photometric and spectroscopic properties of quasars behind the clusters to those in the field. We find mean E(B-V) values of a few times 10^-3 mag for sight lines passing ~Mpc from the clusters' center. The reddening curve is typical of dust but cannot be used to distinguish between different dust types. The radial dependence of the extinction is shallow near the cluster center suggesting that most of the detected dust lies at the outskirts of the clusters. Gravitational magnification of background z ~ 1.7 sources seen on Mpc (projected) scales around the clusters is found to be of order a few per cent, in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions. Contamination by different spectral properties of the lensed quasar population is unlikely but cannot be excluded., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We establish a simple model for the distribution of cold gas around L* galaxies using a large set of observational constraints on the properties of strong MgII absorber systems. Our analysis suggests that the halos of L* galaxies are filled with cool gaseous clouds having sizes of order 1kpc and densities of ~10^{-2} cm^{-3}. We then investigate the physical effects of cloud irradiation by a quasar and study the resulting spectral signatures. We show that quasar activity gives rise to (i) extended narrow-line emission on ~100kpc scales and (ii) an anisotropy in the properties of the absorbing gas arising from the geometry of the quasar radiation field. Provided that quasars reside in halos several times more massive than those of L* galaxies, our model predictions appear to be in agreement with observations of narrow emission-line nebulae around quasars and the recent detections of ~100kpc cold gaseous envelopes around those objects, suggesting a common origin for these phenomena. Using high-resolution UV spectra of 16 low-z QSOs, we study the physical conditions and statistics of O VI absorption in the IGM at z < 0.5. We identify 51 intervening (z_{abs} << z_{QSO}) O VI systems comprised of 77 individual components, and we find 14 "proximate" systems (z_{abs} ~ z_{QSO}) containing 34 components. For intervening systems [components] with rest-frame equivalent width W_{r} > 30 mA, the number of O VI absorbers per unit redshift dN/dz = 15.6(+2.9/-2.4) [21.0(+3.2/-2.8)], and this decreases to dN/dz = 0.9(+1.0/-0.5) [0.3(+0.7/-0.3)] for W_{r} > 300 mA. The number per redshift increases steeply as z_{abs} approaches z_{QSO}, and some proximate absorbers have substantially lower H I/O VI ratios. The lower proximate ratios could be partially due to ionization effects but also require higher metallicities. We find that 37% of the intervening O VI absorbers have velocity centroids that are well-aligned with corresponding H I absorption. If the O VI and the H I trace the same gas, the relatively small differences in line widths imply the absorbers are cool with T < 10^{5} K. Most of these well-aligned absorbers have the characteristics of metal-enriched photoionized gas. However, the O VI in the apparently simple and cold systems could be associated with a hot phase with T ~ 10^{5.5} K if the metallicity is high enough to cause the associated broad Ly alpha absorption to be too weak to detect. We show that 53% of the intervening O VI systems are complex multiphase absorbers that can accommodate both lower metallicity collisionally-ionized gas with T > 10^{5} K and cold photoionzed gas., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplements. We present the results of a search for metal absorption lines in the spectra of background QSOs whose sightlines pass close to foreground QSOs. We detect MgII(2796,2803) absorption in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra of four z>1.5 QSOs whose lines of sight pass within 26-98 kpc of lower redshift (z~0.5-1.5) QSOs. The 100% [4/4 pairs] detection of MgII in the background QSOs is clearly at odds with the incidence of associated (z_abs ~ z_em) systems -- absorbers which exist towards only a few percent of QSOs. Although the quality of our foreground QSO spectra is not as high as the SDSS data, absorption seen towards one of the background QSOs clearly does not show up at the same strength in the spectrum of the corresponding foreground QSO. This implies that the absorbing gas is distributed inhomogeneously around the QSO, presumably as a direct consequence of the anisotropic emission from the central AGN. We discuss possible origins for the MgII lines, including: absorption by gas from the foreground QSO host galaxy; companion galaxies fuelling the QSO through gravitational interactions; and tidal debris left by galaxy mergers or interactions which initiated the QSO activity. The spectrum of the low-redshift QSO PG0953+415 shows two strong, intervening O VI absorption systems. To study the nature of these absorbers, we have used the Gemini Multiobject Spectrograph to conduct a deep spectroscopic galaxy redshift survey in the 5' x 5' field centered on the QSO. This survey is fully complete for r' < 19.7 and is 73% complete for r' < 21.0. We find three galaxies at the redshift of the higher-z O VI system (z = 0.14232) including a galaxy at projected distance rho = 155 kpc. We find no galaxies in the Gemini field at the redshift of the lower-z O VI absorber (z = 0.06807), which indicates that the nearest galaxy is more than 195 kpc away or has L < 0.04 L*. Previous shallower surveys covering a larger field have shown that the z = 0.06807 O VI absorber is affiliated with a group/filament of galaxies, but the nearest known galaxy has rho = 736 kpc. The z = 0.06807 absorber is notable for several reasons. The absorption profiles reveal simple kinematics indicative of quiescent material. The H I line widths and good alignment of the H I and metal lines favor photoionization and, moreover, the column density ratios imply a high metallicity: [M/H] = -0.3 +/- 0.12. The z = 0.14232 O VI system is more complex and less constrained but also indicates a relatively high metallicity. Using galaxy redshifts from SDSS, we show that both of the PG0953+415 O VI absorbers are located in large-scale filaments of the cosmic web. Evidently, some regions of the web filaments are highly metal enriched. We discuss the origin of the high-metallicity gas and suggest that the enrichment might have occurred long ago (at high z)., Comment: Submitted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters. We present high-resolution UV spectra of absorption-line systems toward the low-z QSO HS0624+6907 (z=0.3700). Coupled with spectroscopic galaxy redshifts, we find that many of these absorbers are integalactic gas clouds distributed within large-scale structures. The gas is cool (T<10^5 K) and has relatively high metallicity (Z/Z_sol>0.9). STIS data reveal a cluster of 13 HI Lyman alpha lines within a 1000 km/s interval at z=0.0635. We find 10 galaxies at this redshift with impact parameters ranging from 135 h^-1 kpc to 1.37 h^-1 Mpc. We attribute the HI Lya absorptions to intragroup medium gas, possibly from a large-scale filament viewed along its long axis. Remarkably, the metallicity is near-solar, [M/H] = -0.05 +/- 0.4 (2 sigma uncertainty), yet the nearest galaxy which might pollute the IGM is at least 135 h_70^-1 kpc away. Tidal stripping from nearby galaxies appears to be the most likely origin of this highly enriched, cool gas. More than six Abell galaxy clusters are found within 4 degree of the sight line suggesting that the QSO line of sight passes near a node in the cosmic web. At z~0.077, we find absorption systems as well as galaxies at the redshift of the nearby clusters Abell 564 and Abell 559. We conclude that the sight line pierces a filament of gas and galaxies feeding into these clusters. The absorber at z_abs = 0.07573 associated with Abell 564/559 also has a high metallicity with [C/H] > -0.6, but again the closest galaxy is relatively far from the sight line (293 h^-1 kpc)., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, delete from table 3 some uncorrect HI identifications. Quasar absorption lines have long been recognized to be a sensitive probe of the abundances, physical conditions, and kinematics of gas in a wide variety of environments including low-density intergalactic regions that probably cannot be studied by any other means. While some pre-Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations indicated that Mg II absorption lines arise in gaseous galactic halos with a large covering factor, many early QSO absorber studies were hampered by a lack of information about the context of the absorbers and their connections with galaxies. By providing access to crucial ultraviolet resonance lines at low redshifts, deployment of HST and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer enabled detailed studies of the relationships between QSO absorbers and galaxies. The advent of large surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has also advanced the topic by greatly improving the size of absorber and galaxy samples. We have used the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard HST to measure a sulfur abundance of [S/H] = -0.41 +/-0.06 in the interstellar medium (ISM) of the nearby damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) absorbing galaxy SBS 1543+593. A direct comparison between this QSO absorption line abundance on the one hand, and abundances measured from HII region emission line diagnostics on the other, yield the same result: the abundance of sulfur in the neutral ISM is in good agreement with that of oxygen measured in an HII region 3 kpc away. Our result contrasts with those of other recent studies which have claimed order-of-magnitude differences between HI (absorption) and HII (emission) region abundances. We also derive a nickel abundance of [Ni/H] < -0.81, some three times less than that of sulfur, and suggest that the depletion is due to dust, although we cannot rule out an over-abundance of alpha-elements as the cause of the lower metallicity. It is possible that our measure of [S/H] is over-estimated if some SII arises in ionized gas; adopting a plausible star formation rate for the galaxy along the line of sight, and a measurement of the CII* 1335.7 absorption line detected from SBS 1543+593, we determine that the metallicity is unlikely to be smaller than we derive by more than 0.25 dex. We estimate that the cooling rate of the cool neutral medium is log [l_c (ergs s^{-1} H atom^{-1})] = -27.0, the same value as that seen in the high redshift DLA population., Comment: 31 pages; accepted for publication in the ApJ

From UV spectra of the bright quasar PHL 1811 recorded by FUSE and the E140M configuration on STIS, we have determined the abundances of various atomic species in a Lyman limit system at z = 0.0809 with log N(H I) = 17.98. Considerably more hydrogen may be in ionized form, since the abundances of C II, Si II, S II and Fe II are very large compared to that of O I, when compared to their respective solar abundance ratios. Our determination [O/H] = -0.19 in the H I-bearing gas indicates that the chemical enrichment of the gas is unusually high for an extragalactic QSO absorption system. However, this same material has an unusually low abundance of nitrogen, [N/O] < -0.59, indicating that there may not have been enough time during this enrichment for secondary nitrogen to arise from low and intermediate mass stars. In an earlier investigation we found two galaxies at nearly the same redshift as this absorption system and displaced by 34 and 87 kpc from the line of sight. An r-band image recorded by the ACS on HST indicates these are S0 galaxies. One or both of these galaxies may be the source of the gas, which might have been expelled in a fast wind, by tidal stripping, or by ram-pressure stripping. Subtraction of the ACS point-spread function from the image of the QSO reveals the presence of a face-on spiral galaxy under the glare of the quasar; although it is possible that this galaxy may be responsible for the Lyman limit absorption, the exact alignment of the QSO with the center of the galaxy suggests that the spiral is the quasar host., Comment: 74 pages, 14 figures; to be published in the Astrophysical Journal (Part 1) May 1, 2005 issue. We briefly review the use of UV absorption lines in the spectra of low-redshift QSOs for the study of the physical conditions, metallicity, and baryonic content of the low-z IGM, with emphasis on the missing baryons problem. Current results on the statistics and baryonic content of intervening, low-z O VI and Lya absorption-line systems are presented with some comments on overlap between these two classes of absorbers and consequent baryon double-counting problems. From observations of a sample of 16 QSOs observed with the E140M echelle mode of STIS, we find 44 intervening O VI absorbers and 14 associated O VI systems [i.e, z(abs) ~ z(QSO)]. The implied number of intervening O VI absorbers per unit redshift is dN/dz(O VI) = 23+/-4 for rest equivalent width > 30 mA. The intervening O VI systems contain at least 7% of the baryons if their typical metallicity is 1/10 solar and the O VI ion fraction is <0.2. This finding is consistent with predictions made by cosmological simulations of large-scale structure growth. Recently, a population of remarkably broad Lya lines have been recognized in low-z quasar spectra. If these Lya lines are predominantly thermally broadened, then these H I absorbers likely harbor an important fraction of the baryons. We present and discuss some examples of the broad Lya absorbers. We present a new UV echelle spectrum of PG1216+069, obtained with HST+STIS, which reveals damped Lya (DLA) absorption as well as O I, C II, Si II, and Fe II absorption lines at z(abs) = 0.00632 near the NGC4261 group. The absorber shows no evidence of highly-ionized gas, which places constraints on "warm-hot" missing baryons in the NGC4261 group. The well-developed damping wings of the Lya line tightly constrain the H I column density; we find log N(H I) = 19.32+/-0.03. The metallicity of this sub-DLA is remarkably low, [O/H] = -1.60^{+0.09}_{-0.11}, which is comparable to many analogous high-redshift systems, and the iron abundance indicates that this absorber contains little or no dust. Nitrogen is underabundant; we detect neither N I or N II, and we show that this is not due to ionization effects but rather indicates that [N/O] < -0.28 (3sigma). Despite the proximity to NGC4261 group, there are no bright galaxies close to the sight line at the absorption redshift. The nearest known galaxy is a sub-L* galaxy with a projected distance rho = 86 kpc; the closest L* galaxy is NGC4260 at rho = 246 kpc. The low metallicity and [N/O] indicate that this low-z sub-DLA is a relatively primitive gas cloud. We consider the nature and origin of the sub-DLA, and we find several possibilities. The properties of the sub-DLA are similar to those of the interstellar media in blue compact dwarf galaxies and are also reminiscent of Milky Way HVCs. Or, the object could simply be a small dark-matter halo, self-enriched by a small amount of internal star formation but mostly undisturbed since its initial formation. In this case, the small halo would likely be an ancient building block of galaxy formation that formed before the epoch of reionization., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

To underscore the value of high spectral resolution for the study of low-z QSO absorption lines, we briefly present Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph echelle data that demonstrate how increased resolution leads to dramatic improvement in line measurements. We show that even R = lambda/Delta lambda = 20,000 is insufficient for some measurements. The higher the resolution the better, but R ~ 50,000 is adequate for many outstanding questions about the IGM and the ISM of galaxies that can be probed using QSO absorption lines., Comment: Contribution to "Hubble's Science Legacy: Future Optical-Ultraviolet Astronomy from Space"

The extraordinarily bright quasar PHL 1811 at a redshift z = 0.192 provides an attractive opportunity to use ultraviolet absorption-line spectroscopy to study the properties of gas systems in the local universe. An R = 20,000 far-UV spectrum recorded by FUSE revealed 7 extragalactic absorption systems, one of which is a Lyman limit system at z = 0.08093 accompanied by three systems having redshifts which differ from it by less than 0.008. The abundance of O with respect to Fe in the Lyman limit system is not much different from the solar abundance ratio. Supplementary low resolution spectra recorded by STIS (on HST) at longer wavelengths helped to substantiate our identifications of systems in the FUSE spectrum and suggested the presence of an additional 4 systems that could be detected only through their Ly-alpha features. Spectroscopy at visible wavelengths of 7 galaxies within approximately 2' of PHL 1811 indicated that 2 of them are near the redshift of the quasar and 4 have redshifts within 850 km/s of the extragalactic absorption systems. The Lyman limit system is likely associated with an L* galaxy lying 23" from the sightline. Finally, in addition to prominent features at very low velocities arising from the disk of our Galaxy, the strong resonance transitions of C II and Mg II show evidence for material at v = -200 km/s; the column densities of these two species suggest that 17.7 < log N(H I) < 18.1 if the material has a solar composition., Comment: 47 pages, 5 figures, to appear in the June 2003 issue of the Astronomical Journal

We have used STIS aboard HST to search for Lyman-alpha (Lya) absorption lines in the outer regions of eight nearby galaxies using background QSOs and AGN as probes. Lya lines are detected within a few hundred km/s of the systemic velocity of the galaxy in all cases. We conclude that a background line-of-sight which passes within 26-200 h-1 kpc of a foreground galaxy is likely to intercept low column density neutral hydrogen with log N(HI) >~ 13.0. The ubiquity of detections implies a covering factor of ~ 100% for low N(HI) gas around galaxies within 200 h-1 kpc. We discuss the difficulty in trying to associate individual absorption components with the selected galaxies and their neighbors, but show that by degrading our STIS data to lower resolutions, we are able to reproduce the anti-correlation of Lya equivalent width and impact parameter found at higher redshift. We also show that the equivalent width and column density of Lya complexes (when individual components are summed over ~ 1000 km/s) correlate well with a simple estimate of the volume density of galaxies brighter than M(B) = -17.5 at the same redshift as a Lya complex. We do not reject the hypothesis that the selected galaxies are directly responsible for the observed Lya lines, but our analysis indicates that absorption by clumpy intragroup gas is an equally likely explanation. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) automatically targeted as a quasar candidate the recently discovered, gravitationally lensed, extremely reddened z=2.2 quasar PMN J0134-0931. The SDSS spectrum exhibits Ca II absorption at z=0.76451, which we identify as the redshift of a lensing galaxy. Hubble Space Telescope imaging shows that components CDE of the system are significantly redder than components A or B and detects faint galaxy emission between D and A+B. The redshift of the dust responsible for the reddening remains unconstrained with current data. However, we outline a model wherein lensing and differential reddening by a z=0.76451 galaxy pair can entirely explain this system. Detecting mm-wave molecular line absorption from the lensing galaxy or galaxies may be possible in PMN J0134-0931, just as in the lenses PKS1830-211 and B0218+357. Spectra of about 150 early-type stars in the disk of the Milky Way recorded by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) reveal absorption features from interstellar O VI, a tracer of collisionally ionized gases at temperatures near 300,000 K. (Hotter material is better sensed by its diffuse x-ray emission.) The FUSE survey indicates that hot gas in the plane of the Galaxy yields an average density n(O VI) = 1.7 X 10^{-8} cm^{-3}, a value consistent with earlier results from the Copernicus satellite, but at great distances there is a large dispersion in the measurements from one line of sight to another. This dispersion indicates that O VI absorbing regions probably have a broad distribution of sizes, perhaps giving a power-law behavior for column densities. Comparisons of O VI with other Li-like ions should give some guidance on the nature and origin of the O VI-absorbing regions, but poor correspondences in the velocity profile shapes will complicate the interpretations., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the 17th IAP Colloquium

We have used STIS aboard HST to search for Lyman-alpha (Lya) absorption in the outer regions of nine nearby (cz<6000 km/s) galaxies using background QSOs and AGN as probes. The foreground galaxies are intercepted between 26 and 199 h-1 kpc from their centers, and in all cases we detect Lya within +/-500 km/s of the galaxies' systemic velocities. The intervening galaxies have a wide range of luminosities, from M_B = -17.1 to -20.0, and reside in various environments: half the galaxies are relatively isolated, the remainder form parts of groups or clusters of varying richness. The equivalent widths of the Lya lines range from 0.08 - 0.68 A and, with the notable exception of absorption from one pair, crudely correlate with sightline separation in a way consistent with previously published data, though the column densities derived from the lines do not. The lack of correlation between line strength and galaxy luminosity or, in particular, the environment of the galaxy, suggests that the absorption is not related to any individual galaxy, but arises in gas which follows the same dark-matter structures that the galaxies inhabit., Comment: 8 pages, invited review to appear in the proceedings of the Yale Cosmology Workshop on `The Shapes of Galaxies & their Halos", P. From the analysis of the near-UV spectrum of the QSO 2206-199, obtained with a long series of exposures with STIS on the HST, we deduce a value (D/H) = (1.65 +/- 0.35) x 10(-5) (1 sigma error) for the abundance of deuterium in the z(abs) = 2.0762 damped Lyman alpha system (DLA) along this sight-line. The velocity structure of this absorber is very simple and its neutral hydrogen column density, N(H I), is accurately known; the error in D/H is mostly due to the limited signal-to-noise ratio of the spectrum. Since this is also one of the most metal-poor DLAs, with metal abundances of about 1/200 of solar, the correction due to astration of D is expected to be insignificant and the value we deduce should be essentially the primordial abundance of deuterium. When all (six) available measurements of D/H in high redshift QSO absorbers are considered, we find that the three DLAs---where N(H I) is measured most reliably---give consistently lower values than the three Lyman limit systems. We point out that the weighted mean of the DLA measurements, D/H = (2.2 +/- 0.2) x 10(-5), yields a baryon density Omega_B h^2 = 0.025 +/- 0.001 which is within 1 sigma of the value deduced from the analysis of the CMB angular power spectrum, and is still consistent with the present-day D/H and models of Galactic chemical evolution. Future observations of D I absorption in other DLAs are needed to establish whether our finding reflects a real advantage of DLAs over other classes of QSO absorbers for the measurement of D, or is just a statistical fluctuation., Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, 5 Postscript Figures. We detect 21-cm emission from the Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxy SBS 1543+593, which gives rise to a Damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) absorption line in the spectrum of the background QSO HS 1543+5921 (z=0.807). We obtain an accurate measure of the velocity of the H I gas in the LSB galaxy, v=2868 km/s, and derive a mass of 1.3e9 solar masses. We compare this value with limits obtained towards two other z~0.1 DLA systems, and show that SBS 1543+593 would not have been detected. Hence LSB galaxies similar to SBS 1543+593 can be responsible for DLA systems at even modest redshifts without being detectable from their 21-cm emission., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in A&A

We present images and spectroscopy of objects close to the sightline of Q2302+029 in order to search for galaxies responsible for the remarkable z=0.7 high-ionization absorption line system found by Jannuzi et al (1996). This system shows `normal' narrow OVI, NV, and CIV lines superimposed on broader (3,000-5,000 km/s wide), unsaturated absorption troughs some 56,000 km/s away from the QSO emission redshift (z=1.052). Despite reaching sensitivities sufficient to detect 1/10 L* galaxies in the optical and 1/20 L* in the infra-red, we are unable to detect any obvious bright galaxies which might be responsible for the absorption beyond ~ 6 h-1 kpc of the sightline. This supports the hypotheses that the absorption is either intrinsic to the QSO, or arises in intracluster gas. Adopting either explanation is problematic: in the first case, `associated' absorption at such high ejection velocities is hard to understand, and challenges the conventional discrimination between intrinsic and intervening absorbers; in the second case, the gas must reside in a ~ 40 h-1 Mpc long filament aligned along the line of sight in order to reproduce the broad absorption. Spectroscopy of objects beyond the immediate vicinity of the QSO sightline reveals a galaxy cluster at z=0.59, which coincides with strong Lya and more narrow high ionization lines in the quasar spectrum. Here too, the lack of galaxies at distances comparable to those found for, e.g., Lya-absorbing galaxies, suggests that the absorption may arise from intracluster gas unassociated with any individual galaxies., Comment: 16 pages, accepted by ApJ

We report on optical spectroscopic observations of the X-ray Transient XTE J1118+480 covering the period from April 7, 2000 to July 4, 2000. The spectrum is characterized by weak, broad, double-peaked Balmer and He lines on top of a blue continuum of slope p ~ 1/3, as expected for an optically-thick accretion disk. The weak Bowen blend seen in our spectra may indicate a low intrinsic metallicity for the source. The presence of a partial S-wave pattern in the HeII lambda-4686 line appears consistent with the reported photometric orbital period Porb = 4.1 hr for XTE J1118+480. By using a combination of Doppler mapping and various theoretical arguments, we constrain plausible orbital parameters for the system: a mass ratio 0.02 <~ q <~ 0.1, an inclination i >~ 70 deg for a neutron star primary, or 30 deg <~ i <~ 50 deg for a black hole primary with a mass between 4 and 10 Msun. CaII absorption features observed at very high resolution constrain the interstellar hydrogen absorption column log[N_HI (cm^{-2})] ~ 20.45 +/- 0.2 and the identification of three absorbing clouds indicate a distance to the source <~ 1 kpc, assuming the line-of-sight to XTE J1118+480 has average high-latitude properties. We have observed SN1998S which exploded in NGC3877, with the UES at the WHT and with the E230M echelle of STIS aboard HST. Both data sets were obtained at two seperate epochs. From our own Galaxy we detect interstellar absorption lines of CaII, FeII, MgI, and probably MnII from the edge of the HVC Complex M. We derive gas-phase abundances which are very similar to warm disk clouds in the local ISM, which we believe argues against the HVC material having an extragalactic origin. At the velocity of NGC3877 we detect interstellar MgI, MgII, MnII, CaII, & NaI. Surprisingly, one component is seen to increase by a factor of ~1 dex in N(NaI) and N(MgI) between the two epochs over which the data were taken. Unusually, our data also show narrow Balmer, HeI, and metastable FeII P-Cygni profiles, with a narrow absorption component superimposed on the bottom of the profile's absorption trough. Both the broad and narrow components of the optical lines are seen to increase substantially in strength between the two epochs. Most of the low-ionization absorption can be understood in terms of gas co-rotating with the disk of NGC 3877, providing the SN is at the back of an HI disk with a similar thickness to that of our own Galaxy. However, the variable absorption components, and the classic P-Cygni emission profiles, most likely arise in slow-moving circumstellar outflows originating from the red supergiant progenitor of SN1998S. We have studied a spectrum of Q0122+0338 (z = 1.202) obtained by the FOS on board HST. We present the analysis of three associated absorption systems at z = 1.207, 1.199 and 1.166. The most complex of these at z = 1.207 shows strong absorption from the highly ionized transitions of Lyman alpha, Lyman beta, N V, O VI, Si III, Si IV, and possibly P V. We derive minimal ionic column densities and compare them with those predicted from numerical photoionization models. We find that conditions in the absorbing gas are consistent with an absorber with metallicity twice solar and a total absorbing column density of N(H) = 2*10^19 cm^2. The kinematics of the absorption lines in the z = 1.207 system suggest that a correlation exists between the relative velocity and the creation ionization potential energy for each transition. This is evidence that a complex, multi-component absorber exists. Althought the location of the absorber is uncertain, we consider the origin of this absorption system using the available data and discuss how the high-ionization, and high-metallicity indicate that the absorber may be intrinsic to Q0122+0338., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, uses emulateapj.sty, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have measured the abundances of Zn, Si, Mn, Cr, Fe, and Ni in three damped Lyman alpha systems at redshifts z < 1 from high resolution echelle spectra of QSOs recorded with the Keck I telescope. In all three cases the abundances of Cr, Fe, and Ni relative to Zn indicate low levels of dust depletions. We propose that when the proportion of refractory elements locked up in dust grains is less than about 50 percent, it is plausible to assume an approximately uniform level of depletion for all grain constituents and, by applying a small dust correction, recover the intrisic abundances of Si and Mn. We use this approach on a small sample of damped systems for which it is appropriate, with the aim of comparing the metallicity dependence of the ratios [Si/Fe] and [Mn/Fe] with analogous measurements in Milky Way stars. The main conclusion is that the relative abundances of both elements in distant galaxies are broadly in line with expectations based on Galactic data. Si displays a mild enhancement at low metallicities, as expected for an alpha-capture element, but there are also examples of near-solar [Si/Fe] at [Fe/H] < -1. The underabundance of Mn at low metallicities is possibly even more pronounced than that in metal-poor stars, and no absorption system has yet been found where [Mn/Fe] is solar. The heterogeneous chemical properties of damped Lyman alpha systems, evident even from this limited set of measurements, provide further support for the conclusion from imaging studies that a varied population of galaxies gives rise to this class of QSO absorbers., Comment: 29 pages, LaTex, 7 Postscript Figures. We use a model of galaxy disk formation to explore the metallicities, dust content, and neutral-gas mass density of damped Lyman-$\alpha$ (D\lya) absorbers. We find that the [Zn/H] abundance measurements of D\lya systems now available can be reproduced either by a population of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies forming at redshifts $z > 3$, whose chemical contents evolve slowly with time and whose star formation rates are described by continuous bursts, or by high surface brightness (HSB) galaxies which form continuously over an interval of $z \sim 0.5-3$ (and no higher). Although, in reality, a mixture of galaxy types may be responsible for low-z D\lya systems, our models predict that HSB galaxies form more dust, more rapidly, than LSB galaxies, and that HSB galaxies may therefore obscure background QSOs and not give rise to D\lya lines, as suggested by other researchers. Significantly, we find that the rate at which HSB disks consume neutral gas is too fast to explain the observed evolution in the neutral gas mass density with redshift, and that the consumption of hydrogen by LSB galaxies better fits the data. We explore the redshift evolution of the metal content of damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) with new observations of four absorbers at z < 1.5 . The main conclusion is that the column density--weighted mean metallicity, [] = -1.03 +/- 0.23 (on a logarithmic scale), is not significantly higher at z < 1.5 than at earlier epochs, despite the fact that the comoving star formation rate density of the universe was near its maximum value at this redshift. For three of the four DLAs our observations include absorption lines of Si, Mn, Cr, Fe, and Ni, as well as Zn. We argue that the relative abundances of these elements are consistent with a moderate degree of dust depletion which, once accounted for, leaves no room for the enhancement of the alpha-elements over iron seen in metal poor stars in the Milky Way. This is contrary to previous assertions that DLAs have been enriched solely by Type II supernovae, but can be understood if the rate of star formation in the systems studied proceeded more slowly than in the early history of our Galaxy. These results add to a growing body of data all pointing to the conclusion that known DLAs do not trace the galaxy population responsible for the bulk of star formation. Possible reasons are that sight-lines through metal rich gas are systematically underrepresented because the background QSOs are reddened, and that the most actively star forming galaxies are also the most compact, presenting too small a cross-section to have been probed yet with the limited statistics of current samples., Comment: 40 pages, LaTex, 9 Postscript Figures. We present the first results of a survey designed to understand the origin of the Lyman alpha-forest absorption systems at low redshift. Using the WYFFOS and HYDRA multi-fibre spectrographs on the WHT and WIYN telescopes, we have identified 51 galaxies brighter than b_j=18.5 within 30 arcmins of the sightline of the QSO 1821+643. We find three galaxies within 500 h-1 kpc of the QSO sightline; the nearest galaxy is 104 h-1 kpc away from the line of sight, and is at the same redshift as a strong Lyman alpha absorption line. The remaining two galaxies have no corresponding absorption to extremely low equivalent width limits (< 0.05 \AA). Beyond 500 h-1 kpc Lyman-alpha absorption lines are found at similar redshifts as several galaxies, but we show that these coincidences are likely to be accidental. Half of the Lyman alpha systems for which we could have found at least an L^* galaxy have no galaxies at the absorbers' redshifts. For the majority of the remainder, we show that any apparent association with galaxies is probably coincidental. These \lya systems are characterised by their weak equivalent widths (W_r < 0.2 \AA), and we conclude that this population of absorbers is uncorrelated, or at best, weakly correlated, with galaxies., Comment: New version accepted by MNRAS

We have determined the metallicity of the $z_{abs} = 1.0093$ damped Lyman alpha system in the bright QSO EX 0302-223; this is only the third such measurement at redshifts $z \simlt 1$. Unlike the previous two cases, we find that the abundance of Zn is only a factor of $\sim 2$ lower than in the Galactic interstellar medium today and is entirely compatible with the typical metallicity of stars in the Milky Way disk at a look-back time of 9.5 Gyrs. Although the galaxy responsible for producing the absorption system has yet to be positively identified, our observations show that galaxies on a chemical evolution path similar to that of the Milky Way do contribute to the damped Lyman alpha population at intermediate redshifts. Cr is 2.5 times less abundant than Zn, presumably because of depletion onto dust; however, the degree of depletion is less severe than in diffuse interstellar clouds in the disk of our Galaxy and in the Magellanic Clouds. Evidently, the interstellar environment in damped Lyman alpha galaxies is less conducive to the formation and survival of dust grains (and molecular hydrogen), but the physical processes at the root of this effect have yet to be clarified., Comment: 5 pages, LaTeX, 1 Postscript Figure. The increasing availability of high quality spectra of QSO absorption line systems at resolutions of only a few km/s is expected to facilitate the translation of the kinematics of components comprising the lines into the spatial distribution of gas around an absorbing galaxy. In this Letter, we present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra of Q1219+047, a QSO whose sightline passes 21 h-1 kpc from the center of M61, through the outer regions of an extended H I disk. We detect complex Mg II absorption, spanning a velocity range of approximately 300 km/s, and strong C IV absorption; these are the first UV observations of a QSO absorption line system arising in the outskirts of a disk of a nearby galaxy at low inclination. Our observations are at odds with models of galaxies in which absorbing clouds co-rotate with a galaxy's disk, because M61's low inclination should give rise to only a few Mg II components spread over a small velocity range in such a model. We have obtained spectra of three QSO/AGNs with the GHRS aboard the Hubble Space Telescope to search for absorption from low column density gas in the halo of the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy Leo I. The probe sightlines pass 2.1, 3.7, and 8.1 kpc from the center of the galaxy, but no CIV, SiII, or SiIV absorption is found at the velocity of Leo I. The absence of low ionization species suggests that the column density of neutral hydrogen which exists within 2-4 kpc of the galaxy is N(HI) < 10^{17} cm^{-2}; assuming that the high ionization lines of SiIV and CIV dominate the ionization fraction of silicon and carbon, the limit to the total hydrogen column is N(H) < 10^{18} cm^{-2}. Our results demonstrate that there are no dense flows of gas in or out of Leo I, and that there is no evidence for tidally disrupted gas which might have accompanied the galaxy's formation or evolution. However, our detection limits are insufficient to rule out the existence of a sphere or shell of ionized gas around the dSph, with a mass up to that constituting the entire galaxy. To expand the known number of low-redshift galaxies which lie close to bright ($V < 17.2$) QSO lines of sight, we have identified 24 galaxies within 11 arcmins of nine QSOs which have been observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Galaxies are found between redshifts of $0.0114-0.145$ and lie between $39-749$ $h^{-1}$ kpc from QSO sightlines. Knowing the redshifts of these galaxies has already proved important in understanding results from HST programmes designed to search for UV absorption lines from low-redshift galaxies, and will enable future observations to probe the halos of these galaxies in detail., Comment: MNRAS in press. 9 pages LaTeX using MNRAS sty.
