Dans la perspective de valorisation des fibres de lin dans les matériaux de construction, la présente étude s’intéresse à la caractérisation microstructurale et mécanique d’un composite cimentaire renforcé par des fibres de lin. Les analyses microstructurales au MEB ont été menées pour évaluer l’homogénéité de la distribution des fibres, la qualité de l’interaction fibre/matrice et l’influence de leur présence sur les défauts microstructuraux. Le comportement mécanique en flexion du mortier renforcé par les fibres de lin est étudié en fonction de la longueur et la teneur en fibres. Les résultats indiquent une bonne adhésion entre les fibres et la matrice à l’état frais. Mais les fibres étant hydrophiles, elles gonflent pendant la prise du ciment et le retrait lors du séchage engendre alors des déchaussements. Les résultats de caractérisation mécanique sont encourageants. Tout d’abord, la fissuration du mortier due au retrait au jeune âge est fortement réduite du fait de la présence des fibres. Ensuite, la rupture brutale de la matrice en monolithe laisse place à un comportement quasi-ductile quand la teneur ou la longueur de fibre augmente. Ce changement de comportement, analysé en termes d’indice de ténacité, illustre la capacité remarquable des fibres de lin à renforcer les matrices cimentaires du fait de leurs bonnes propriétés mécaniques. With the purpose of the flax fibre valuing in construction materials, this study focuses on the characterizations mechanical and microstructural of flax fibre cement composite reinforced. The mechanical strength was studied as the function of fibre volume ratio and length. Meanwhile, the microstructural analysis investigated the homogeneity of fibre scattering, the interaction fibre/cement matrix and the influence of flax fibres on the defects microstructures. The results show the interesting mechanical properties of flax fibre in comparison with other fibre vegetable. But they are damaged in an alkaline environment such as concrete or cement composite. In fresh state, a good adherence between fibre and cement matrix was found. But as hydrophilic, the flax fibres absorb water and become inflated. Afterwards, the fibres return deflated at the drying time and this dry/wet cycling reduce the fibre/matrix bond. Being reinforced by the flax fibres, the brute failure of cement materials was replaced by the one more ductile when the fibre ratio increased. This transition was evaluated by the toughness indexes that allow measuring the energy absorption of flax fibre.

When solidifying/stabilising high water content materials, the water/cement (w/c) ratios are higher than those usually found in concrete engineering. However, an important question about the availability of the total measured water content can be asked. In this paper, the influence of initial water content on the mechanical behaviour of solidified dredged sludge is investigated. Water consumptions for three types of cement are measured after solidification with different w/c ratios. It has been observed that the three types of cement consume different quantities of water. The theoretical water consumption value expressed by unit mass of anhydrous cement is 0.42. Many observations concerning the water consumption compared with the replacement level suggest that the measured initial water is not totally available to hydrate the added cement. This study aimed to assess the influence of nutrient enrichment on the development of microalgal biofilm on concrete and PVC cubes. Three mesocosms were utilized to create a nutrient gradient over a period of 28 days. Various parameters including biomass, photosynthetic activity, microtopography, and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were measured. Imaging PAM techniques were employed to obtain surface-wide data. Results revealed that nutrient availability had no significant impact on Chl a biomass and the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII ( F v / F m ). The photosynthetic capacity and efficiency were minimally affected by nutrient availability. Interestingly, the relationship between microphytobenthic (MPB) biomass and photosynthesis and surface rugosity exhibited distinct patterns. Negative reliefs showed a strong correlation with F v / F m , while no clear pattern emerged for biomass on rough concrete structures. Overall, our findings demonstrate that under conditions of heightened eutrophication, biofilm photosynthesis thrives in the fissures and crevasses of colonized structures regardless of nutrient levels. This investigation provides valuable insights into the interplay between nutrient availability and surface rugosity.

In this study, new foam concretes incorporating hemp shives without the use of autoclaving have been developed and studied. Several protocols and parameters were investigated. Firstly, the influence of the addition of pozzolanic additives on the resulting density, mechanical behaviour and thermal conductivity was examined. Secondly, the effects of the incorporation of hemp shives at 5, 10 and 15 vol% on the previous three properties in such concretes were investigated. Moreover, economic cost and CO 2 emissions were estimated to outline an optimized formulation of non-autoclaved biobased foam concretes. First, the target characteristics in terms of compressive strength (minimum of 2 MPa), thermal conductivity (less than 0.2 Wm -1 K -1 ) and density (800 kg/m 3 ) were achieved. It was noted that pozzolanic additions slightly improved the mechanical and thermal strength of non-autoclaved foamed concrete, while the addition of hemp shives improved the thermal strength but had an unfavourable effect on the mechanical strength. Moreover, both reduced the CO 2 emissions.

Colonisation of artificial structures by primary producers is an important determinant for eco-engineering projects. In this context, interactions between the colonisation by microphytobenthic biofilm and macroalgae were explored on 48 samples of marine infrastructures (MI) immersed for one year in the English Channel. Marine infrastructures samples with smooth and rough surface were compared to evaluate the influence of surface micro-scale rugosity. Microphytobenthos biomass (MPB), macroalgal diversity and photosynthetic parameters of both were assessed during colonisation. No significant differences were found as a function of the surface rugosity of MI samples, which was unexpected, but can be explained by biogenic rugosity provided by barnacles. Marine infrastructures were largely colonised by a red encrusting alga, Phymatolithon purpureum , which showed poor photosynthetic capacity compared to the microphytobenthos present next to it. Colonisation by monospecific encrusting algae tended to reduce the primary productivity of hard substrate.

The impact of concrete composition and roughness on the formation of microalgal biofilms and their photobiology were studied on marine infrastructures presenting four different compositions combined with two degrees of roughness (rough and smooth). The structures were first inoculated with a natural microphytobenthic biofilm and immersed in sterilised seawater with a controlled photoperiod for six days. Photosynthetic activity was assessed with an imaging PAM-(Pulse Amplitude Modulated) fluorometer and microtopography was monitored in parallel with a 3-D camera. The results indicated that roughness had an impact on the biofilm biomass, its physiological status and its photosynthetic efficiency and capacity. The assessment of surface roughness indicated that negative reliefs were preferably colonised by MPB (microphytobenthic) cells with better photosynthetic performances. Moreover, MPB biofilms showed better photoacclimation in these microhabitats than on the positive and smooth reliefs. This study confirms the importance of microhabitat for biofilm formation and their photobiology.

The scarcity of natural aggregates promotes waste reuse as secondary raw material in the field of civil engineering. This article focuses on the beneficial reuse of marine-dredged sediments in road building. Thus, mixtures of raw sediments and dredged sand collected from Brest Harbur (Bretagne, France) were treated with road hydraulic binders. Formulation were prepared and characterized as recommended by the French Technical Guidelines for soil treatment with lime and/or hydraulic binders. Mechanical resistance results are quite similar for both the hydraulic binders, suggesting a similar reactivity with the studied sediment sample. However, some discrepancies can be noted on sustainability parameters. Indeed, water resistance after immersion at 40°C is significantly better for the mixtures treated with cement containing more glass-forming oxides (SiO 2  + Al 2 O 3 ) and fluxing (Fe 2 O 3 +CaO + MgO + K 2 O + Na 2 O). Moreover, the both hydraulic binders can lead to swelling in the road materials as observed in scanning electron microscopy analyses. Indeed, microscopic observations indicated volumetric swelling of treated samples, which is greatly influenced on the one side by ettringite quantity and on the other hand by the presence of water in pores material.

The pathogenesis of endometriosis, a disease widely believed to arise from an aberrant growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, is still unclear. We have previously observed that cytokine-stimulated endometrial cells of women with endometriosis secrete in vitro increased amounts of monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1). This factor may be important in the recruitment and activation of peritoneal macrophages observed in endometriosis patients. The present study reports that, in the presence of the disease, such an up-regulation of MCP-1 expression arises in vivo and can be encountered in situ in the intrauterine endometrium. In women with endometriosis, MCP-1 expression was elevated in endometrial glands, both at the level of the protein (immunohistochemistry) and the mRNA (in situ hybridization). This was observed throughout the menstrual cycle and varied according to the stage of the disease. These findings strongly argue in favor of the presence of pathophysiological changes in the eutopic endometrium of patients with endometriosis and make plausible MCP-1 as a key effector cell mediator involved in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Imprinted autosomal loci apparently reside in very large chromosomal domains that exhibit asynchrony in replication of homologous alleles during the DNA synthesis phase. Replication asynchrony can be cytogenetically visualized by a replication-banding discordance between homologous bands of a given pair of chromosomal homologs. The replication time of a chromosomal band at high resolution can be determined by blocking DNA synthesis at the R/G-band transition and using replication banding. The R/G transition reflects the transition from early (R-) to late (G- and C-) band DNA replication. We studied discordance between two groups of homologous chromosomal bands: (a) four bands, 6q26-27, 11p13, 11p15.5 and 15q11.2-12, each containing at least one imprinted gene; and (b) nine bands containing no known imprinted genes. Fifty pairs of chromosomes were analyzed at high resolution after R/G transition blocking and late 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine incorporation. The rate of discordance was the same for bands containing imprinted genes and for control bands. Both homologous bands of a pair replicate either before or after the R/G transition and do not straddle the R/G transition. Repression associated with imprinting does not appear to involve late replication at the band level of resolution. Tissue-specific inactivation is associated with DNA methylation and late replication, whereas allele-specific inactivation is associated with DNA methylation but not with delayed or late replication.

We describe a novel fragile site in a rearranged chromosome, associated with the presence of telomeric repeat sequences at the fusion point of a translocation between chromosomes 13 and Y. The case reported in this study shows a de novo (Y;13) translocation, which appears to represent fusion of an apparently intact chromosome Y with a chromosome 13 that has lost only part of its short arm. Ten percent of the cells show a normal karyotype without the (Y;13) translocation. Molecular cytogenetic studies of the derived Y;13 chromosome revealed three hybridization sites of the telomeric probes-one at each end and one at the breakpoint junction. A fragile site is also observed in the intrachromosomic telomeric region. This coincidence suggests that the telomere repeat sequences (TTAGGG)n, when present at an interstitial chromosomal location, can promote the formation of a novel fragile site.
