Abstract

Summary: Nanomaterials are a large area of research at present. These materials, which have at least one of their dimensions in the nanoscale (i.e., in a length range from 1 nm to 100 nm), have remarkable or unconventional properties, unlike bulk materials. These materials are currently used in many applications; however, new potential uses are being investigated. In this sense, there is large interest in their use in medicine, electronic devices, the production and storage of energy, composite materials, etc. The production of nanomaterials is addressed through physical and/or chemical methods; however, most of these methods exhibit low reproducibility or a low production rate or make use of toxic chemicals. In order to avoid most of these drawbacks, the laser-based synthesis of nanomaterials has emerged as an alternative to overcome these limitations. This family of methods use a laser beam to produce different nanomaterials (e.g., nanoparticles, nanowires or 2D materials) using diverse approaches. Techniques such as those based on laser ablation, laser vaporization, pulsed laser deposition (PLD), laser-chemical vapor deposition (LCVD), etc., are being explored at present to fabricate these nanoscale materials with a controlled size and shape. In this context, here we present research papers addressing the most recent developments in this field to summarize the current state of the art in the synthesis of nanomaterials using laser techniques.

Abstract

Every year, millions of tons of fish waste are generated from fishing activities, and a similar amount is discarded and returned to the sea as unwanted catches. This material can be used as a biological source for many potential new added-value products, such asobtaining hyaluronic acid from fish eyeballs or extracting collagen from fish skin, but there are not many utilities for fish bones yet. This work tackles the transformation of fish discards into calcium phosphates. Discards from scorpionfish (Scorpaena scrofa) and Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus), as well as by-products generated from aquaculture activities (heads and trimmings frames) of salmon (Salmon salar), were used to obtain calcium phosphate. Biphasic carbonated hydroxyapatite (HA) /beta-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) material was obtained. The biphasic HA-TCP material has a promising range of applications in the biomedical field based on its similarity to calcium phosphates found in human bones in terms of crystallite size and carbonate content. The presence of Na, Mg, Sr, and K ions in the HA-TCP material is very beneficial, since they contribute to bone metabolism and cell adhesion

Abstract

Laser-direct writing of graphene structures on different polymeric sources has been demonstrated to be a potential approach to produce, among others, micro-supercapacitors, nano-generators or sensors. Laser-induced graphene is produced on the surface of polymers by using, in general, laser radiation emitted by CO2 lasers due to the good absorption of most polymers to this laser radiation. The fast thermal decomposition and carbonization of the laser irradiated surfaces lead to the formation of graphene. In this work, we have studied the capabilities of other laser sources emitting ns- or ps- pulses to produce graphene on some polymers. These are able to produce graphene patterns with a higher resolution, and finer details can be produced. Finally, we demonstrate the capability of this graphene to be used as temperature sensors

18. Increased UV absorption properties of natural hydroxyapatite-based sunscreen through laser ablation modification in liquid

Abstract

Sunfilters based on hydroxyapatite (HAp) and iron‐containing compounds (Fe2O3 and calcium iron phosphates) are of increasing interest, as they show UV absorption without generating health endanger free radicals (usually observed when other inorganic sunscreens are used). In this paper, laser ablation of solids in liquids has been applied to improve the UV absorption properties of a HAp based Fe‐containing sunscreen powder derived from cod fish bones. Two different laser wavelengths were explored (532 and 1064 nm, green and infrared, respectively); an improved experimental device was used, to allow a fine control of the volume of the irradiated particles. Results show an increased UV absorbance for the laser‐treated powders in comparison with the untreated ones; this can be explained considering the smaller particle size and increased surface area; the higher iron concentration in the powders may also be determinant. Enhanced absorption was also observed in the near‐infrared range, making the powders even more suitable for sunscreen applications. The green laser was more effective than the infrared one. Overall, laser ablation showed to be a powerful technique to control the size of the sunscreen particles and tailor their optical properties.

Abstract

We report the synthesis of air-stable Cu nanoparticles (NPs) using the bottom-up laser reduction in liquid method. Precursor solutions of copper acetlyacetonate in a mixture of methanol and isopropyl alcohol were irradiated with femtosecond laser pulses to produce Cu NPs. The Cu NPs were left at ambient conditions and analyzed at different ages up to seven days. TEM analysis indicates a broad size distribution of spherical NPs surrounded by a carbon matrix, with the majority of the NPs less than 10 nm and small numbers of large particles up to ∼100 nm in diameter. XRD collected over seven days confirmed the presence of fcc-Cu NPs, with some amorphous Cu2O, indicating the stability of the zero-valent Cu phase. Raman, FTIR, and XPS data for oxygen and carbon regions put together indicated the presence of a graphite oxide-like carbon matrix with oxygen functional groups that developed within the first 24 h after synthesis. The Cu NPs were highly active towards the model catalytic reaction of para-nitrophenol reduction in the presence of NaBH4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Silver nanostructured thin films have been fabricated on silicon substrate by combining simultaneously pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) and electrophoretic deposition (ED) techniques. The composition, topography, crystalline structure, surface topography, and optical properties of the obtained films have been studied by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-visible spectrophotometry. The coatings were composed of Ag nanoparticles ranging from a few to hundred nm. The films exhibited homogenous morphology, uniform appearance, and a clear localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) around 400 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

30. Laser irradiation in water for the novel, scalable synthesis of black TiO x photocatalyst for environmental remediation.

Abstract

Since 1970, TiO 2 photocatalysis has been considered a possible alternative for sustainable water treatment. This is due to its material stability, abundance, nontoxicity and high activity. Unfortunately, its wide band gap (≈3.2 eV) in the UV portion of the spectrum makes it inefficient under solar illumination. Recently, so-called "black TiO 2 " has been proposed as a candidate to overcome this issue. However, typical synthesis routes require high hydrogen pressure and long annealing treatments. In this work, we present an industrially scalable synthesis of TiO 2 -based material based on laser irradiation. The resulting black TiO x shows a high activity and adsorbs visible radiation, overcoming the main concerns related to the use of TiO 2 under solar irradiation. We employed a commercial high repetition rate green laser in order to synthesize a black TiO x layer and we demonstrate the scalability of the present methodology. The photocatalyst is composed of a nanostructured titanate film (TiO x ) synthetized on a titanium foil, directly back-contacted to a layer of Pt nanoparticles (PtNps) deposited on the rear side of the same foil. The result is a monolithic photochemical diode with a stacked, layered structure (TiO x /Ti/PtNps). The resulting high photo-efficiency is ascribed to both the scavenging of electrons by Pt nanoparticles and the presence of trap surface states for holes in an amorphous hydrogenated TiO x layer.
