Abstract

Flower strips in agricultural landscapes are planted to counteract an ongoing loss of biodiversity. However, there is still much room for improvement. Based on the findings of a research project, this paper shows how flower strips can be optimised and thus increase the diversity of flower-visiting insect species. The common use of standard seed mixtures comprising plant species that are not adapted to local conditions presents a risk that many plant species do not establish - especially under unfavourable weather conditions in spring. In addition, neophytes and cultivated species often used in standard seed mixtures predominantly support ubiquitous insect species, whereas native and site-adapted segetal species interact with both ubiquitous and specialised flower visitors and thus support a particularly broad range of insect species. Species-rich seed mixtures of site-adapted plant species (preferably of regional origin) could contribute much better to segetal and insect species conservation in agricultural landscapes.

Abstract

Eight species of the ground beetle genus Calosoma are reported from the southern Levant (Egypt (Sinai), Israel, Jordan) and adjacent areas in Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. The reports of one species were probably due to mislabelling. An illustrated identification key for the species in the region is provided. The current state of knowledge on ecological traits (e.g. dispersal power, phenology and prey) and distribution range, especially in the southern Levant, of the treated Calosoma species is summarized. Additional information about taxonomy and identification of the species is also provided.We dedicate this work to Vladimir Chikatunov, a curator of the Coleoptera Collection of the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History, Tel Aviv University, Israel, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. He supported us in many different ways in our work with carabids from Israel and neighbouring countries. Some of us particularly remember the excellent excursions he led to the Negev and the Golan Heights. Abstract

Die Fragmentierung von Lebensräumen wird in der Naturschutzbiologie als eine wesentliche Ursache für den Rückgang von Arten und ihren Funktionen in Ökosystemen angesehen. Da-mit werden auch Ökosystemleistungen vieler fragmentierter Ökosysteme reduziert. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die Konsequenzen der Fragmentierung auf den Ebenen der ge-netischen Diversität innerhalb von Arten, der Artenzusammensetzung von Lebensgemein-schaften sowie der trophischen Interaktionen betrachtet. Als ein Konzept zur Minimierung der Lebensraumfragmentierung werden verbindende Korridore im Naturschutz diskutiert. Eine kurze Darstellung führt Organismengruppen an, für welche Korridore positive Auswirkungen haben. Die grundsätzliche Hinterfragung der negativen Auswirkung von Fragmentierung und der positiven Wirkung von Korridoren, wie sie in den letzten beiden Jahren vermehrt in der internationalen Naturschutzbiologie geführt wird, wird besprochen und Beispiele für überra-schende Interaktionsmechanismen werden angeführt. Halboffene Korridore stellen ein Konzept dar, welches den Widerspruch auflöst, dass ein Korridor, der einen Lebensraumtyp verbindet, andere Lebensräume fragmentieren kann. Dazu wurde ein Forschungsvorhaben des Bundesamtes für Naturschutz (mit Mitteln des Bundesumweltministeriums) durchgeführt, welches das große naturschutzfachliche Poten-zial halboffener Lebensräume bestätigen konnte. Halboffene Lebensräume ermöglichen die gleichzeitige Vernetzung stenotoper Arten der Offenlebensräume wie der Wälder. Solche Strukturen können wahrscheinlich helfen, dem starken Rückgang von Insekten in Mitteleu-ropa entgegenzuwirken.

Abstract

The tiger beetles of the southern Levant (Egypt: Sinai, Israel, Jordan) and adjacent regions of the neighboring countries Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Egypt are reviewed in terms of species taxonomy, ecological and distributional traits and conservation biology. An illustrated dichotomous identification key from the species of this region is provided. Based on the classical identification key, we developed a digital identification application for smartphones and tablets. The species status of Calomera aulicoides (J.R. Sahlberg, 1913) is (re-) established (stat. rest.) as this taxon can be found sympatrically and parapatrically together with Calomera littoralis winkleri (Mandl, 1934). Morphological character states are discussed to identify Cicindela javetii Chaudoir, 1861 and C. herbacea Klug, 1832. Calomera aphrodisia (Baudi di Selve, 1864) is recorded for the first time from Israel. The presence of Calomera aulica (Dejean, 1831) and Grammognatha euphratica (Dejean, 1822) is confirmed by new records. At least five taxa are threatened or extinct in Israel. For one of these species, Israel has a national responsibility for the conservation as the main part of the distribution range is within this country. Eine fortschreitende Fragmentierung der Kulturlandschaft in Mitteleuropa führteund führt zu einer zunehmenden Isolation der verbleibenden Lebensräume fürheimische Tier- und Pflanzenarten. Ein reduzierter oder auch vollständig ausbleibenderGenfluss zwischen Populationen fragmentierter Habitate begünstigt wiederumeine erhöhte Aussterbewahrscheinlichkeit, besonders von stenotopen bzw. stenökensowie ausbreitungsschwachen Arten. Eine großräumige Vernetzung von Lebensräumendurch geeignete Ausbreitungswege oder „Korridore“ ist somit eine entscheidendeVoraussetzung für den langfristigen Erhalt und Schutz von Biodiversität.Doch besonders in Landschaften, in denen sich Offenland- und Waldlebensräumeverzahnen, kommt es häufig zu Konflikten bei der „Biotopvernetzung“, da Korridore,welche auf die Vernetzung eines bestimmten Lebensraumtyps zielen, häufigzugleich eine Fragmentierung des anderen Lebensraumtyps bewirken. Seit einigerZeit werden „halb offene Lebensräume“, welche ein Mosaik aus offenland- undgehölzgeprägten Strukturen besitzen, als Lösungsansatz für einen effektiveren Ausbreitungskorridor für Offenland- und Waldarten diskutiert.In dem vorliegenden Band zum Forschungs- und Entwicklungsvorhaben (F+E)„Ökologische Funktion von halboffenen Verbundkorridoren“ wurden, mit Förderungdes Bundesamtes für Naturschutz, das Potenzial und die Perspektiven von halboffenenLebensräumen als Ausbreitungskorridore untersucht und dokumentiert. DieErgebnisse zeigen, dass „halb offene Korridore“ für Offenland- und Waldartengleichermaßen als Korridor oder „stepping stone“ dienen und somit wirksam zueiner Vernetzung verschiedener Lebensraumtypen in Kulturlandschaften beitragenkönnen. Die Ergebnisse des Projektes wurden für den vorliegenden Band zudemim Hinblick auf ihre Anwendbarkeit und Umsetzung in der Naturschutzpraxis aufbereitet.

Abstract

Range shifts are predicted for numerous species due to climate change, and therefore understanding species dispersal is more crucial than ever. For some species, their low dispersal capabilities may prevent them from reaching new, suitable habitats, thus threatening their survival. This is of particular concern for those ground beetles which are flightless and depend on a specific type of habitat. However, studies on ground beetle dispersal rates are rare. We investigated the shift in distribution range of Carabus hortensis in northwestern Germany over a span of 22 years. We found that this species disperses on average 127 m per year with low variation between years. Although C. hortensis’ movement (locomotory) activity is not different or lower than that found in similar ground beetles, its dispersal rate is rather low. We speculate that this slow range expansion may be due to a long individual development time from egg to teneral and suggest that in the face of climate change, conservation actions, like assisted migration, may be an option for such slow dispersing species. Abstract

Based on the study of approximately 400 specimens, we give an overview of the systematics and taxonomy, distribution, dispersal power, and habitat preferences of the carabids belonging to the tribes Anthiini, Helluonini, Dryptini, and Zuphiini in the southern Levant (Egypt: Sinai, Israel and Jordan). We provide identification keys for the members of the given taxa in this region. Eleven species of the Zuphi - itae sensu Ober & Maddison (2008) have previously been published from the southern Levant. Our study with rigorous examinations of verifiable records up - dated the known distribution ranges of six species, though the total number of species which occur in the given region remains eleven. - The following two new species are described: Zuphium orbachi spec. nov., which is similar to Zuphium nu midicum Lucas, 1846, but differs in its elongate body shape, specific form of aedea - gus and further characters. Parazuphium salmoni spec. nov., a microphthalmic spe - cies from the superficial underground compartment or in deep soil horizons in the Upper Galilee, has robust antennae and legs, but has an aedeagus similar to that of P. chevrolatii Castelnau de Laporte, 1833. - We compiled a list of the 24 known subterranean Zuphiini species (including Parazuphium salmoni spec. nov.), all are restricted to the subtropical and tropical zones. - The following taxonomic acts are proposed: Anthia (Thermophilum) sexmaculata marginata Latreille, 1823, stat. rest.; Zuphium axaridis Iablokoff-Khnzorian, 1972, syn. nov. of Zuphium cilicium Peyron, 1858; Zuphium olens kochi Schatzmayr, 1936, syn. nov. of Zuphium olens (P. Rossi, 1790) (colour variation). - We present first records of: Macrocheilus saulcyi Chevro - lat, 1854 for Jordan; Zuphium olens (P. Abstract

The members of the carabid beetle tribe Cyclosomini s. 1. in Israel and adjacent regions (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt) are studied in terms of taxonomy, ecology (including the traits power of dispersal, especially hind wing development, and phenology), and distribution patterns. Material from museum collections and the authors' field trips is analysed. The delineation of the tribe Cyclosomini s.l. is discussed and the genus Graphipterus Latreille, 1802 is excluded, but the corsyrine ground beetles are included. An illustrated key is presented for the identification of the species known from the Levantine countries (twelve species from the genera Anaulacus W. S. MacLeay, 1825, Somoplatus Dejean, 1829, Discoptera Semenov, 1889, Tetragonoderus Dejean, 1829, Atlantomasoreus Mateu, 1984 and Masoreus Dejean, 1821; seven species from Israel). A new species from the northern Negev is described: Atlantomasoreus groneri spec. nov. This species can be differentiated from the two African species of this genus by short antennae, a well-developed gonosubcoxite which is also found in the genus Masoreus, the shape of the pronotum and characters of the aedeagus, especially the large copulatory pieces and the shape of the median lobe. Due to the characters of A. groneri spec. nov. we assume that the genera Masoreus and Atlantomasoreus form a monophyletic lineage. The genus Atlantomasoreus shows a disjunct distribution range and is an element of the peri- Saharian zone. Israel has a national responsibility for the conservation of the new species A. groneri spec. nov. which lives in shifting sand dunes, an increasingly endangered habitat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
