To His Excellency Abraham Lincoln^ President o f the United Slates : M o st R e s p e c te d S ir : Since I In s t had the honor to address you in January, 1802, tiie courage, skill and perseverance manifested by you in your etForts to main­tain and defend our Union of'Slates, with all their rightful authority and power, has commanded my heartfelt gratitude, confidence and respect Your efforts to bring back the rebel states to accept the supremacy of the constitution and the laws, with the general course of your Administration, have com­pelled me to believe that there is nothing that you have sought and desired so much as to know and apply the best means to secure a lusting and honorable peace, and to overcome with the least possible expense of life and treasure a rebellion that embodies in itself the sum of all that is vile. It would have been too much to expect from any human being that such a complication of difficulties and dangers as those yon have encountered should have been met and overcome without errors and mistakes as to the best menus to restore peace to our country. Our Union of States, which has from the commence­ment of the government continued to spread its protect­ing shield over nil the rights reserved to each of the individual states, can never bo abandoned to the despotism of slavery, or the heresy of secession while there is life and power to maintain and defend it In my letter I endeavored to show that nothing but the corrupting power of buying and selling human beings could ever so fur demoralize a people as to cause them to deluge a nation in blood, in order to perpetuate an institution that enslaves thousands of their own children. F r l l o w -C i t i z e n s—We are on tlfe eve o f the most important election that has ever been held in the United States since the adoption o f the Consti­tution which gave us existence as a nation. Upon its decision will rest, in a great measure, the fate o f popular government, and the hopes o f demo­cratic liberty for the world. You have known me long and well as a Democrat, devoted by education, principle, and association to the Democratic party. In that school I was trained, and in the defence and advocacy o f the Democratic party I have spent my strength and my means. In all that concerns the masses, and in all that will serve to promote the advantage of workingmen I claim to have a deep and abiding interest. As a Democrat, I address myself to my Democratic friends. If there has ever been one article o f the Demo­cratic creed which, more than another, holds a fore­most place in its principles, it w as that of devotion to the Union left ns by our fathers. In the con­tinuance o f that Union we saw the permanence of free institutions. In the growth of oar country, and the increase of its free labor interests, under the genius and skill o f our intelligent workingmen, we saw the wilderness turned to a garden, and the forests giveaway to the homes and fireside altars of millions of happy freemen. In the progress of our peoplo, and the growth of oar States, we saw the day approaching when the continent should be bound together as one mighty nation, enjoying the blessings of freedom and of peace. The preserva­tion o f the Union is now, ns it has always been, the foremost article o f my Democratic creed. TITB TREASON OP THIRTY YEARS. But we have seen a change in this delightful picture o f the progress of our country. Men who had long held the control of the Democratic party, and who had long held the control of the Govern­ment, labored for years, in secret as well a
