Search

Superconductivity and magnetism are antagonistic quantum matter, while their intertwining has long been considered in frustrated-lattice systems1-3. In this work, we utilize scanning tunneling microscopy and muon spin resonance to discover time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconductivity in kagome metal Cs(V,Ta)3Sb5, where the Cooper pairing exhibits magnetism and is modulated by it. In the magnetic channel, we observe spontaneous internal magnetism in a full-gap superconducting state. Under perturbations of inverse magnetic fields, we detect a time-reversal asymmetrical interference of Bogoliubov quasi-particles at a circular vector. At this vector, the pairing gap spontaneously modulates, which is distinct from pair density waves occurring at a point vector and consistent with the theoretical proposal of unusual interference effect under time-reversal symmetry-breaking. The correlation between internal magnetism, Bogoliubov quasi-particles, and pairing modulation provides a chain of experimental clues for time-reversal symmetry-breaking kagome superconductivity., Comment: To appear in Nature Materials (2024)

As many Kagome metals, the topological superconductor AV$_3$Sb$_5$ with (A = K,Rb,Cs) hosts a charge density wave . A related chiral flux phase that breaks the time-reversal symmetry has been further theoretically predicted in these materials. The flux phase is associated with loop currents that produce ordered orbital magnetic moments, which would occur at the momentum points, $\bf M$, characterizing the charge-density wave state. Polarized neutron-diffraction experiments have been performed on an assembly of single crystals of ${\rm CsV_3Sb_5}$ to search for such orbital magnetic moments. No evidence for the existence of a three-dimensionally ordered moment is found at any temperature at the first ${\bf M_1}$=(1/2,0,0) point in the Brillouin zone within an excellent experimental uncertainty, ${\it i.e.}$ ${\bf m}=0 \pm 0.01\mu_B$ per vanadium atom. However, a hint to a magnetic orbital moment is found in the second Brillouin zone at {\bf M$_2$}=(1/2,1/2,0) at the detection limit of the experiment. Some loop currents patterns flowing ${\it only}$ on vanadium triangles are able to account for this finding suggesting an ordered orbital magnetic moment of, at most, $\sim 0.02 \pm 0.01\mu_B$ per vanadium triangle., Comment: 11 figures

FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ superconductors are commonly considered layered van der Waals materials with negligible inter-layer coupling. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering to study spin excitations in single-crystal samples, we reveal that the magnetic coupling between adjacent Fe layers is not only significant, as it affects excitations up to \textcolor{black}{15} meV, but also ferromagnetic in nature, making the system different from most unconventional superconductors including iron pnictides. Our observation provides a new standpoint to understand the absence of magnetic order in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$. Since intercalating between the Fe layers is known to enhance superconductivity and suppress the inter-layer coupling, superconductivity appears to be a more robust phenomenon in the two-dimensional limit than antiferromagnetic order.

Understanding spin and lattice excitations in a metallic magnetic ordered system form the basis to unveil the magnetic and lattice exchange couplings and their interactions with itinerant electrons. Kagome lattice antiferromagnet FeGe is interesting because it displays rare charge density wave (CDW) deep inside the antiferromagnetic ordered phase that interacts with the magnetic order. We use neutron scattering to study the evolution of spin and lattice excitations across the CDW transition $T_{\rm CDW}$ in FeGe. While spin excitations below $\sim$100 meV can be well described by spin waves of a spin-1 Heisenberg Hamiltonian, spin excitations at higher energies are centered around the Brillouin zone boundary and extend up to $\sim180$ meV consistent with quasiparticle excitations across spin-polarized electron-hole Fermi surfaces. Furthermore, $c$-axis spin wave dispersion and Fe-Ge optical phonon modes show a clear hardening below $T_{\rm CDW}$ due to spin-charge-lattice coupling but with no evidence for a phonon Kohn anomaly. By comparing our experimental results with density functional theory calculations in absolute units, we conclude that FeGe is a Hund's metal in the intermediate correlated regime where magnetism has contributions from both itinerant and localized electrons arising from spin polarized electronic bands near the Fermi level.

Superconducting domes, ubiquitous across a variety of quantum materials, are often understood as a window favorite for pairing opened by the fluctuations of competing orders. Yet, a quantitative understanding of how such a window closes is missing. Here, we show that inelastic neutron scattering, by quantifying a length scale associated with polar fluctuations, $\ell_0$, addresses this issue. We find that the superconducting dome of strontium titanate definitely ends when $\ell_0$ vanishes. Moreover, the product of $\ell_0$ and the Fermi wavevector peaks close to the maximum critical temperature. Thus, this superconducting dome stems from the competition between the increase of the density of states and the unavoidable collapse of the quantum paraelectric phase, both induced by doping. The successful quantitative account of both the peak and the end of the superconducting dome implies a central role in the pairing mechanism played by the soft ferro-electric mode and its hybridisation with the acoustic branch. There are few inelastic neutron scattering (INS) reports on the superconducting single crystals of FeAs-1111 system, even though it was first discovered in 2008, due to the extreme difficulty in large single crystal growth. In this paper, we have studied the low-energy spin excitations in the optimally electron-doped CaFe$_{0.88}$Co$_{0.12}$AsF single crystals with $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 21 K by INS. The resonance energy of the superconducting spin resonant mode with $E_\mathrm{r}$ = 12 meV amounts to 6.6 $k_\mathrm{B}$$T_\mathrm{c}$, which constitutes the largest $E_\mathrm{r}$/$k_\mathrm{B}$$T_\mathrm{c}$ ratio among iron-based superconductors reported to date. The large ratio implies a strong coupling between conduction electrons and magnetic excitations in CaFe$_{0.88}$Co$_{0.12}$AsF. The resonance possesses a magnonlike upward dispersion along transverse direction due to the anisotropy of spin-spin correlation length within $ab$ plane in the normal-state, which points to a spin fluctuation mediated sign-reversed ${s}\mathbf\pm$ wave pairing in CaFe$_{0.88}$Co$_{0.12}$AsF.

Several decades of debate have centered around the nature of the enigmatic pseudo-gap state in high temperature superconducting copper oxides. Recently, we reported polarized neutron diffraction measurements that suggested the existence of a magnetic texture bound to the pseudo-gap phase [Bounoua, {\it et al}. Communications Physics 5, 268 (2022)]. Such a magnetic texture is likely to involve the spontaneous appearance of loop currents within the CuO$_2$ unit cells, which give birth to complex correlated patterns. In the underdoped ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.6}}$, the magnetic structure factor of such an orbital magnetic texture gives rise to two distinct magnetic responses at {\bf q}=0 and {\bf q}=1/2. As this pattern alters the lattice translation invariance, such a state of matter could contribute to an instability of the Fermi surface. Here, we report polarized neutron scattering measurements on a nearly optimally doped high quality single crystal of ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.9}}$ that exhibits the same {\bf q}=1/2 magnetism and a weakly overdoped ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}}$ sample where this signal is no longer sizeable. The in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic neutron scattering intensities in ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.9}}$ (at {\bf q}=1/2) and ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.85}}$ (at {\bf q}=0), reported previously, display the same temperature dependent hallmarks. The magnitudes of both {\bf q}=0 and {\bf q}=1/2 magnetic signals further exhibit the same trends upon doping in ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}}$, confirming that they are likely intertwined., Comment: supplemental information + 6 figures

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE), typically observed in ferromagnetic (FM) metals with broken time-reversal symmetry, depends on electronic and magnetic properties. In Co$_{3}$Sn$_{2-x}$In$_{x}$S$_{2}$, a giant AHE has been attributed to Berry curvature associated with the FM Weyl semimetal phase, yet recent studies report complicated magnetism. We use neutron scattering to determine the spin dynamics and structures as a function of $x$ and provide a microscopic understanding of the AHE and magnetism interplay. Spin gap and stiffness indicate a contribution from Weyl fermions consistent with the AHE. The magnetic structure evolves from $c$-axis ferromagnetism at $x$ = 0 to a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with reduced $c$-axis moment and in-plane AFM order at $x$ = 0.12 and further reduced $c$-axis FM moment at $x$ = 0.3. Since noncollinear spins can induce non-zero Berry curvature in real space acting as a fictitious magnetic field, our results revealed another AHE contribution, establishing the impact of magnetism on transport.

Control of magnetization and electric polarization is attractive in relation to tailoring materials for data storage and devices such as sensors or antennae. In magnetoelectric materials, these degrees of freedom are closely coupled, allowing polarization to be controlled by a magnetic field, and magnetization by an electric field, but the magnitude of the effect remains a challenge in the case of single-phase magnetoelectrics for application. We demonstrate that the magnetoelectric properties of the mixed-anisotropy antiferromagnet LiNi$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$PO$_4$ are profoundly affected by replacing a fraction of the Ni$^{2+}$ ions with Fe$^{2+}$ on the transition metal site. This introduces random site-dependent single-ion anisotropy energies and causes a lowering of the magnetic symmetry of the system. In turn, magnetoelectric couplings that are symmetry-forbidden in the parent compounds, LiNiPO$_4$ and LiFePO$_4$, are unlocked and the dominant coupling is enhanced by two orders of magnitude. Our results demonstrate the potential of mixed-anisotropy magnets for tuning magnetoelectric properties.

Spatial correlation between atoms can generate a depletion in the energy dispersion of acoustic phonons. Two well known examples are rotons in superfluid helium and the Kohn anomaly in metals. Here we report on the observation of a large softening of the transverse acoustic mode in quantum paraelectric SrTiO$_3$ by means of inelastic neutron scattering. In contrast to other known cases, this softening occurs at a tiny wave vector implying spatial correlation extending over a distance as long as 40 lattice parameters. We attribute this to the formation of mesoscopic fluctuating domains due to the coupling between local strain and quantum ferroelectric fluctuations. Thus, a hallmark of the ground state of insulating SrTiO$_3$ is the emergence of hybridized optical-acoustic phonons. The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a key to understand the magnetically driven superconductivity in iron-based superconductors, where both local and itinerant electrons are present and the orbital angular momentum is not completely quenched. Here, we report a neutron scattering study on the bilayer compound CaK(Fe$_{0.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$)$_4$As$_4$ with superconductivity coexisting with a non-collinear spin-vortex crystal magnetic order that preserves the tetragonal symmetry of Fe-Fe plane. In the superconducting state, two spin resonance modes with odd and even $L$ symmetries due to the bilayer coupling are found similar to the undoped compound CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ but at lower energies. Polarization analysis reveals that the odd mode is $c-$axis polarized, and the low-energy spin anisotropy can persist to the paramagnetic phase at high temperature, which closely resembles other systems with in-plane collinear and $c-$axis biaxial magnetic orders. These results provide the missing piece of the puzzle on the SOC effect in iron-pnictide superconductors, and also establish a common picture of $c-$axis preferred magnetic excitations below $T_c$ regardless of the details of magnetic pattern or lattice symmetry., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, including Supplementary Materials. Despite decades of intense researches, the enigmatic pseudo-gap (PG) phase of superconducting cuprates remains an unsolved mystery. In the last 15 years, various symmetry breakings in the PG state have been discovered, spanning an intra-unit cell (IUC) magnetism, preserving the lattice translational (LT) symmetry but breaking time-reversal symmetry and parity, and an additional incipient charge density wave breaking the LT symmetry upon cooling. However, none of these states can (alone) account for the partial gapping of the Fermi surface. Here we report a hidden LT-breaking magnetism uisng polarized neutron diffraction. Our measurements reveal magnetic correlations, in two different underdoped $\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.6}$ single crystals, that settle at the PG onset temperature with i) a planar propagation wave vector $(\pi,0) \equiv (0,\pi)$, yielding a doubling or quadrupling of the magnetic unit cell and ii) magnetic moments mainly pointing perpendicular to the $CuO_{2}$ layers. The LT-breaking magnetism is at short range suggesting the formation of clusters of 5-6 unit cells. Together with the previously reported IUC magnetism, it yields a hidden magnetic texture of the $CuO_{2}$ unit cells hosting loop currents, forming large supercells which may be crucial for elucidating the PG puzzle., Comment: 5 figures, supplementary file upon request

Metallic materials with kagome lattice structure are interesting because their electronic structures can host flat bands, Dirac cones, and van Hove singularities, resulting in strong electron correlations, nontrivial band topology, charge density wave (CDW), and unconventional superconductivity. Recently, kagome lattice compounds AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) are found to have intertwined CDW order and superconductivity. The origin of the CDW has been suggested to be purely electronic, arising from Fermi-surface instabilities of van Hove singularity (saddle point) near the M points. Here we use neutron scattering experiments to demonstrate that the CDW order in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is associated with static lattice distortion and a sudden hardening of the B3u longitudinal optical phonon mode, thus establishing that electron-phonon coupling must also play an important role in the CDW order of AV$_3$Sb$_5$.

The theory of quantum order-by-disorder (QOBD) explains the formation of modulated magnetic states at the boundary between ferromagnetism and paramagnetism in zero field. PrPtAl has been argued to provide an archetype for this. Here, we report the phase diagram in magnetic field, applied along both the easy $a$-axis and hard $b$-axis. For field aligned to the $b$-axis, we find that the magnetic transition temperatures are suppressed and at low temperature there is a single modulated fan state, separating an easy $a$-axis ferromagnetic state from a field polarised state. This fan state is well explained with the QOBD theory in the presence of anisotropy and field. Experimental evidence supporting the QOBD explanation is provided by the large increase in the $T^2$ coefficient of the resistivity and direct detection of enhanced magnetic fluctuations with inelastic neutron scattering, across the field range spanned by the fan state. Quantum spin systems exhibit an enormous range of collective excitations, but their spin waves, gapped triplons, fractional spinons, or yet other modes are generally held to be mutually exclusive. Here we show by neutron spectroscopy on SeCuO$_3$ that magnons, triplons, and spinons are present simultaneously. We demonstrate that this is a consequence of a structure consisting of two coupled subsystems and identify all the interactions of a minimal magnetic model. Our results serve qualitatively to open the field of multi-excitation spin systems and quantitatively to constrain the complete theoretical description of one member of this class of materials., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

New phases with broken discrete Ising symmetries are uncovered in quantum materials with strong electronic correlations. The two-leg ladder cuprate \textbf{$Sr_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}$} hosts a very rich phase diagram where, upon hole doping, the system exhibits a spin liquid state ending to an intriguing ordered magnetic state at larger $Ca$ content. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we report here the existence of short range magnetism in this material for two $Ca$ contents, whose origin cannot be ascribed to Cu spins. This magnetism develops exclusively within the two-leg ladders with a diffraction pattern at forbidden Bragg scattering which is the hallmark of loop current-like magnetism breaking both time-reversal and parity symmetries. Our discovery shows local discrete symmetry breaking in a one dimensional spin liquid system as theoretically predicted. It further suggests that a loop current-like phase could trigger the long range magnetic order reported at larger doping in two-leg ladder cuprates., Comment: 6 figures, Supplementary information included

$5d$ iridium oxides are of huge interest due to the potential for new quantum states driven by strong spin-orbit coupling. The strontium iridate Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is particularly in the spotlight because of the so-called $j_\text{eff}=1/2$ state consisting of a quantum superposition of the three local $t_{2g}$ orbitals with -- in its most simple version -- nearly equal population, which stabilizes an unconventional Mott insulating state. Here, we report an anisotropic and aspherical magnetization density distribution measured by polarized neutron diffraction in a magnetic field up to 5~T at 4~K, which strongly deviates from a local \jeffHalf picture even when distortion-induced deviations from the equal weights of the orbital populations are taken into account. Once reconstructed by the maximum entropy method and multipole expansion model refinement, the magnetization density shows cross-shaped positive four lobes along the crystallographic tetragonal axes with a large spatial extent, showing that the $xy$ orbital contribution is dominant. We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$, derived from SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveals the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors $\textbf{Q}_{\rm AF}$=(1,0) and $\textbf{Q}_{\rm FM}$=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$ are closely associated with a flat band of the $e_g$ orbitals near the Fermi level, different from the $t_{2g}$ orbitals in superconducting SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$. Therefore, Co-substitution in SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ induces a $t_{2g}$ to $e_g$ orbital switching, and is responsible for FM spin fluctuations detrimental to the singlet pairing superconductivity., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material available upon request, to be published in PRL

Intra unit cell (IUC) magnetic order observed by polarized neutron diffraction (PND) is one of the hallmarks of the pseudogap state of high-temperature copper oxide superconductors. This experimental observation, usually interpreted as a result of loop currents, has been recently challenged based on lower statistics data. We here address the crucial issue of polarization inhomogeneities in the neutron beams showing that the original data had a much better reproducibilty. Within these technical limitations, we here propose a self-consistent analysis that potentially solves the controversy. Polarized-neutron diffraction experiments (PND) have revealed that the pseudogap state of the cuprates exhibits unusual intra-unit-cell (IUC) magnetism. At a qualitative level, the data indicate a moment direction that is neither perpendicular nor parallel to the CuO2 layers, yet an accurate measurement of a structurally simple compound has been lacking. Here we report PND results with unprecedented accuracy for the IUC magnetic order in the simple-tetragonal single-CuO$_2$-layer compound HgBa2CuO$_{4+{\delta}}$. At the transition temperature, we find evidence for magnetic critical scattering. Deep in the ordered state, we determine the moment direction to be 70{\deg} $\pm$ 10{\deg} away from the normal to the CuO$_2$ layers, which rules out both purely planar loop currents and high-symmetry Dirac multipoles, the two most prominent theoretical proposals for the microscopic origin of the IUC magnetism. However, the data are consistent with Dirac multipoles of lower symmetry or, alternatively, with a particular configuration of loop currents that flow on the faces of the CuO$_6$ octahedra., Comment: Supplementary materials included

YFeO$_3$ and LaFeO$_3$ are members of the rare-earth orthoferrites family with \textit{Pbnm} space group. Using inelastic neutron scattering, the low-energy spin excitations have been measured around magnetic Brillouin zone center. Splitting of magnon branches and non-zero magnon gap is observed for both compounds, which is similar to the behavior observed in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$. Spin wave calculations which include both Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions and single-ion anisotropy in the spin-Hamiltonian comprehensively accounts for all the experimentally observed features. Layered 5$d$ transition iridium oxides, Sr$_2$(Ir,Rh)O$_4$, are described as unconventional Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling. The undoped compound, Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, is a nearly ideal two-dimensional pseudospin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet, similarly to the insulating parent compound of high-temperature superconducting copper oxides. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we here report a hidden magnetic order in pure and doped Sr$_2$(Ir,Rh)O$_4$, distinct from the usual antiferromagnetic pseudo-spin ordering. We find that time-reversal symmetry is broken while the lattice translation invariance is preserved in the hidden order phase. The onset temperature matches that of the odd-parity hidden order recently highlighted using optical second harmonic generation experiments. Within the complex phase diagram of the hole-doped cuprates, seizing the nature of the mysterious pseudo-gap phase is essential to unravel the microscopic origin of high-temperature superconductivity. Below the pseudo-gap temperature $\rm T^{\star}$, evidences for intra-unit-cell orders breaking the 4-fold rotation symmetry have been provided by neutron diffraction and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Using polarized neutron diffraction on a detwinned $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}$ sample, we here report a distinct a-b anisotropy of the intra-unit-cell magnetic structure factor below $\rm T^{\star}$, highlighting that intra-unit-cell order in this material breaks the mirror symmetry of the CuO$_2$ bilayers. This is likely to originate from a crisscrossed arrangement of loop currents within the $\rm CuO_2$ bilayer, resulting in a bilayer mean toroidal axis along the $\rm {\bf b}$ direction., Comment: Text and 4 4 figures + supplementary materials (1 figure)

We report an inelastic neutron scattering study of single crystals of (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)ODFeSe. Temperature-dependent low-energy spin excitations are observed near $\mathbf{Q}=$ (0.5, 0.27, 0.5) and equivalent wave vectors symmetrically surrounding $\mathbf{Q}=$ (0.5, 0.5, 0.5) in the 1-Fe Brillouin zone, consistent with a Fermi-surface-nesting description. The excitations are broadly distributed in energy, ranging from 16 to 35 meV. Upon cooling below the superconducting critical temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$), magnetic response below twice the superconducting gap $2\Delta_\mathrm{SC}$ exhibits an abrupt enhancement, consistent with the notion of spin resonance, whereas the response at higher energies increases more gradually with only a weak anomaly at $T_\mathrm{c}$. Our results suggest that (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)ODFeSe might be on the verge of a crossover between different Cooper-pairing channels with distinct symmetries., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In most existing theories for iron-based superconductors, spin-orbit coupling (SOC) has been assumed insignificant. Even though recent experiments have revealed an influence of SOC on the electronic band structure, whether SOC fundamentally affects magnetism and superconductivity remains an open question. Here we use spin-polarised inelastic neutron scattering to show that collective low-energy spin fluctuations in the orthorhombic (or "nematic") phase of FeSe possess nearly no in-plane component. Such spin-space anisotropy can only be caused by SOC. It is present over an energy range greater than the superconducting gap 2$\Delta _\mathrm{sc}$ and gets fully inherited in the superconducting state, resulting in a distinct $c$-axis polarised "spin resonance". Our result demonstrates the importance of SOC in defining the low-energy spin excitations in FeSe, which helps to elucidate the nearby magnetic instabilities and the debated interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The prominent role of SOC also implies a possible unusual nature of the superconducting state.

Well defined peaks with energies of about 18 meV have been observed in a variety of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals as well as on powders of iron-based superconductors and their parent compounds using either the triple-axis or the time-of-flight technique. They can easily be mistaken for signatures of real excitations. We have found that they are due to multiple scattering events involving primarily walls of the sample environment. Hence, they are particularly troublesome in experiments using very small samples as have been used with recently developed high intensity neutron spectrometers. It will be discussed what needs to be done to reduce the unwanted scattering to a minimum.

By means of neutron inelastic scattering, magnetic excitations and phonons were measured for a single crystal of slightly overdoped superconductor Ca10Pt4As8(Fe1-xPtxAs)10 (x ~ 0.2) with the transition temperature Tc of ~33 K. Below Tc, magnetic excitation spectra \{chi}"(Q, {\omega}) measured at Q = QM [magnetic {\Gamma} points] are gapped, and in the relatively higher {\omega} region, the \{chi}"(QM, {\omega})-increase was observed with decreasing T, where the maximum of the increase was found at ~18 meV at 3 K (<< Tc). These characteristics are favorable to orbital-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity with the so-called S++symmetry of the order parameter. The energy dependence of {\delta}Q-temperature(T) curve of the magnetic excitations seems to have anomalous behavior in rather wide T region above Tc, {\delta}Q being the width of the Q scan profile. In the phonon measurements, we observed softening of the in-plane TA mode, which corresponds to the elastic constant C66. This softening seems to start at rather high temperature T, as T is lowered. Additionally, anomalous increase in spectral weights of the TO-phonons at around QM in the region 35 < {\omega} < 40 meV was found even above Tc, as T is lowered from ambient T . Because the spectral weights in this {\omega} region mainly correspond to the in-plane motions of Fe atoms and because orbital fluctuations are expected to be strong at around QM, the result may present clues to investigate a possible coupling between the fluctuations of the orbitals and lattice system., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

One of the leading issues in high-$\rm T_c$ copper oxide superconductors is the origin of the pseudogap phase in the underdoped regime of their phase diagram. Using polarized neutron diffraction, a novel magnetic order has been identified as an hidden order parameter of the pseudogap as the transition temperature corresponds to what is expected for the pseudogap. The observed magnetic order preserves translational symmetry as predicted for orbital moments in the circulating current theory. Being now reported in three different cuprates familles, it appears as a universal phenomenon whatever the crystal structure (with single CuO$_2$ layer or bilayer per unit cell). The elucidation of the pseudogap phenomenon of the cuprates, a set of anomalous physical properties below the characteristic temperature T* and above the superconducting transition temperature Tc, has been a major challenge in condensed matter physics for the past two decades. Following initial indications of broken time-reversal symmetry in photoemission experiments, recent polarized neutron diffraction work demonstrated the universal existence of an unusual magnetic order below T*. These findings have the profound implication that the pseudogap regime constitutes a genuine new phase of matter rather than a mere crossover phenomenon. They are furthermore consistent with a particular type of order involving circulating orbital currents, and with the notion that the phase diagram is controlled by a quantum critical point. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering results for HgBa2CuO4+x (Hg1201) that reveal a fundamental collective magnetic mode associated with the unusual order, and that further support this picture. The mode's intensity rises below the same temperature T* and its dispersion is weak, as expected for an Ising-like order parameter. Its energy of 52-56 meV and its enormous integrated spectral weight render it a new candidate for the hitherto unexplained ubiquitous electron-boson coupling features observed in spectroscopic studies., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, with supplementary information and figures

The nature of the enigmatic pseudogap region of the phase diagram is the most important and intriguing unsolved puzzle in the field of high transition-temperature (Tc) superconductivity. This region, the temperature range above Tc and below a characteristic temperature T*, is characterized by highly anomalous magnetic, charge transport, thermodynamic and optical properties. Associated with the pseudogap puzzle are open questions pertaining to the number of distinct phases and the presence of a quantum-critical point underneath the superconducting dome. Here we use polarized neutron diffraction to demonstrate for the model superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d (Hg1201) that T* marks the onset of an unusual magnetic order, and hence a novel state of matter with broken time-reversal symmetry. Together with prior results for YBa2Cu3O6+d (YBCO), this observation constitutes an essential and decisive demonstration of the universal existence of such a state. The new findings appear to rule out a large class of theories that regard T* as a crossover temperature rather than a phase transition temperature. Instead, they are consistent with a variant of previously proposed charge-current-loop order that involves apical oxygen orbitals, and with the notion that many of the unusual properties arise from the presence of a quantum-critical point., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report the first measurements of the dynamics of liquid germanium (l-Ge) by quasi-elastic neutron scattering on time-of-flight and triple-axis spectrometers. These results are compared with simulation data of the structure and dynamics of l-Ge which have been obtained with ab initio density functional theory methods. The simulations accurately reproduce previous results from elastic and inelastic scattering experiments, as well as the q-dependence of the width of the quasi-elastic signal of the new experimental data. In order to understand some special features of the structure of the liquid we have also simulated amorphous Ge. Overall we find that the atomistic model represents accurately the average structure of real l-Ge as well as the time dependent structural fluctuations. The new quasi-elastic neutron scattering data allows us to investigate to what extent simple theoretical models can be used to describe diffusion in l-Ge., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures

We review experimental attempts using polarized neutron scattering technique to reveal the existence in high temperature superconductors of a long-range ordered state characterized by the spontaneous appearance of current loops. We draw a particular attention to our recent results (B. Fauqu\'e {\it et al.}, {\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 96}, 197001 (2006)) that, up to now, can be explained only by the theory of circulating current proposed by C.M. The spin dynamics of high temperature superconductors measured by inelastic neutron scattering is reviewed. The spin susceptibility evolves a lot with increasing doping from the undoped insulating state to the overdoped metallic state. In the superconducting state, a strong magnetic resonance peak occurs in the spin excitation spectrum whose energy is proportional to the superconducting temperature. In underdoped and optimally doped regimes, normal state antiferromagnetic fluctuations are observed, proving the existence of strong electronic correlations in cuprates. They are characterized by a spin pseudo-gap.
