1. High thermoelectric performance in metallic NiAu alloys

Abstract

Thermoelectric (TE) materials seamlessly convert thermal into electrical energy and vice versa, making them promising for applications such as power generation or cooling. Although historically the TE effect was first discovered in metals, state-of-the-art research mainly focuses on doped semiconductors with large figure of merit, $zT$, that determines the conversion efficiency of TE devices. While metallic alloys have superior functional properties, such as high ductility and mechanical strength, they have mostly been discarded from investigation in the past due to their small Seebeck effect. Here, we realize unprecedented TE performance in metals by tuning the energy-dependent electronic scattering. Based on our theoretical predictions, we identify binary NiAu alloys as promising candidate materials and experimentally discover colossal power factors up to 34 mWm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ (on average 30 mWm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ from 300 to 1100 K), which is more than twice larger than in any known bulk material above room temperature. This system reaches a $zT$ up to 0.5, setting a new world record value for metals. NiAu alloys are not only orders of magnitude more conductive than heavily doped semiconductors, but also have large Seebeck coefficients originating from an inherently different physical mechanism: within the Au s band conduction electrons are highly mobile while holes are scattered into more localized Ni d states, yielding a strongly energy-dependent carrier mobility. Our work challenges the common belief that good metals are bad thermoelectrics and presents an auspicious paradigm for achieving high TE performance in metallic alloys through engineering electron-hole selective s-d scattering.

Abstract

Crystals of the new solid compounds Tm(Al1-xMnx)B4 (x = 0.002 ~ 0.100) and R(Al0.995Mn0.005)B4 (R = rare earth), were grown from R2O3 and crystalline B powders for Al and Mn mixed flux. Mixture of the starting materials was heated up to1773 K in an Ar atmosphere and kept at that temperature for 5 h, then the molten flux solution was slowly cooled down at a rate of 50 K/h. Tm(Al1-xMnx)B4 compounds were obtained as a single phase from the Al1-xMnx flux (x = 0.005 ~ 0.100). R(Al0.995Mn0.005)B4 compounds were obtained as in the case of R(Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu). ThB4-type compounds were formed in the case of R (Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho). The lattice constants of Ho(Al, Mn)B4 and Lu(Al, Mn)B4 obtained were in the range of a = 3.475(1), b = 5.932(1), c = 11.465(1) Å and a = 3.434(1), b = 5.895(1), c = 11.391(1) Å. The lattice constants were smaller than those of RAlB4 by dissolving Mn atom into Al atom. The values of the hardness for R(Al, Mn)B4 were in the range of 11.9 ~ 13.7 GPa. The magnetic susceptibilities of both Er(Al0.995Mn0.005)B4 and Yb(Al0.995Mn0.005)B4 show antiferromagnetic transitions at 3.5 K and 12 K, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The crystallographic and transport properties of thin films fabricated by pulsed laser deposition and belonging to the Sm y (Fe x Ni1- x )4Sb12 filled skutterudite system were studied with the aim to unveil the effect exerted by temperature and duration of thermal treatments on structural and thermoelectric features. The importance of annealing treatments in Ar atmosphere up to 523 K was recognized, and the thermal treatment performed at 473 K for 3 h was selected as the most effective in improving the material properties. With respect to the corresponding bulk compositions, a significant enhancement in phase purity, as well as an increase in electrical conductivity and a drop in room temperature thermal conductivity, were observed in annealed films. The low thermal conductivity, in particular, can be deemed as deriving from the reduced dimensionality and the consequent substrate/film interfacial stress, coupled with the nanometric grain size. Abstract

Alongiside the growing demand for wearable and implantable electronics, the development of flexible thermoelectric (FTE) materials holds great promise and has recently become a highly necessitated and efficient method for converting heat to electricity. Conductive polymers were widely used in previous research; however, n-type polymers suffer from instability compared to the p-type polymers, which results in a deficiency in the n-type TE leg for FTE devices. The development of the n-type FTE is still at a relatively early stage with limited applicable materials, insufficient conversion efficiency, and issues such as an undesirably high cost or toxic element consumption. In this work, as a prototype, a flexible n-type rare-earth free skutterudite (CoSb3)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) binary thermoelectric film was fabricated based on ball-milled skutterudite via a facile top-down method, which is promising to be widely applicable to the hybridization of conventional bulk TE materials. The polymers bridge the separated thermoelectric particles and provide a conducting pathway for carriers, leading to an enhancement in electrical conductivity and a competitive Seebeck coefficient. The current work proposes a rational design towards FTE devices and provides a perspective for the exploration of conventional thermoelectric materials for wearable electronics. 32. Thermal conductivity of BaZrO3and KTaO3single crystals

Abstract

BaZrO3and KTaO3are two rare examples of perovskite oxides that retain the ideal cubic structure down to the lowest temperature. In this paper, we report thermal conductivity (κ) between 300 and 773 K on single crystals of these compounds. For BaZrO3, the κof 7.5 Wm−1K−1at 300 K is ∼40% larger than the previously reported polycrystalline values. For KTaO3, our value of 13.1 Wm−1K−1at 300 K clarifies the sources of error in some of the previously reported data. These results underscore the importance of high-quality experimental data in benchmarking the accuracy of advanced first-principles κcalculations.

Abstract

International audience; The influence of structural disorder on the thermal transport in the colusite Cu26V2Sn6S32 has been investigated by means of low-temperature thermal conductivity and specific heat measurements (2–300 K), 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy and temperature-dependent powder inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Variations in the high-temperature synthesis conditions act as a key parameter for tuning the degree of disorder in colusite compounds. Intriguingly, we find that all synthesized samples are disordered, the degree of which varies with the synthesis conditions used. Mössbauer data clearly evidence that Sn atoms do not solely occupy the 6c site of the crystal lattice but are present on possibly both the Cu and V sites, leading to a random distribution of these three cations within the unit cell. Increasing the disorder in these materials tends to lead to a smearing out of the main features in the phonon density of states measured by INS. Although the evolution of the inelastic signal upon warming is well described by a quasiharmonic approximation, elastic properties calculations indicate large average Grüneisen parameters, consistent with those determined experimentally from thermodynamic data. Increasing the level of disorder results in a decreased average Grüneisen parameter suggesting that the lowered lattice thermal conductivity is not driven by enhanced anharmonicity. These results provide experimental evidence to support that the remarkable changeover in the lattice thermal conductivity from crystalline to glasslike is solely driven by enhanced disorder accompanied by local lattice distortions.

Abstract

In/ZnO bulk compounds have been synthesized using a simple solid-state process. In this study, both the structural features and thermoelectric properties of the Zn1–xInxO series with ultralow indium content (0 ≤ x≤ 0.02) have been studied. High-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy analyses highlight that indium has the ability to create multiple basal plane and pyramidal defects that produce ZnO domains with inverted polarity starting from dopant concentrations as low as 0.25 atom %. Interestingly, the formation of parallel inversion boundaries consisting of InO6octahedra in the ZnO4tetrahedra matrix is responsible for phonon scattering while increasing electrical conductivity, thereby enhancing the thermoelectric properties. This effect of multiple extended two-dimensional defects on the thermoelectric properties of ZnO is reported for the first time with such low indium doping. On the chemistry side, the present results point toward a lack of In solubility in the ZnO structure. Moreover, this study is a step forward to the synthesis of other thermoelectric compounds where dopant-induced planar defects in bulk transition metal compounds have the potential to enhance both phonon scattering and electronic conductivity.

42. Enhancement of Thermoelectric Performance through Transport Properties Decorrelation in the Quaternary Pseudo-Hollandite Chalcogenide Rb0.2Ba0.4Cr5Se8

Abstract

The novel quaternary compound Rb0.2Ba0.4Cr5Se8was synthesized and characterized in both single crystal and polycrystalline forms. Crystallizing in the monoclinic crystal system (space group C2/m, cell parameters a= 18.7071(4) Å, b= 3.6030(1) Å, c= 8.9637(3) Å, β = 104.494(2)°) and isostructural to pseudo-hollandite compounds, it features mixed Rb and Ba occupancy within its one-dimensional channels. High-temperature X-ray diffraction revealed no decomposition up to 973 K, and the thermal expansion coefficient at 300 K was determined to be 2.6(1)·10–5K–1. Spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the density of states for Rb0.2Ba0.4Cr5Se8is more polarized than that of Ba0.5Cr5Se8, resulting in a higher Seebeck coefficient, which was experimentally confirmed to reach a peak value of 400 μV·K–1at 620 K. Resistivity measurements indicated a degenerate semiconducting behavior below 550 K, with a resistivity peak of 100 mΩ·cm at that temperature, leading to a maximum power factor of 0.21 mW·m–1·K–2. Thermal conductivity measurements indicated low values around 0.8 W·m–1·K–1in the 300–900 K range, resulting in a thermoelectric figure of merit of 0.22 at 873 K. Decorrelated transport properties observed in this double-inserted pseudo-hollandite compound make Rb0.2Ba0.4Cr5Se8a good example of beneficial synergistic effects for higher thermoelectric performance.

Abstract

Ternary copper-containing sulfides Cu 12 Sb 4 S 13 and Cu 4 Sn 7 S 16 have attracted considerable interest since few years due to their high-efficiency conversion as absorbers for solar energy and promising thermoelectric materials. We report therein on the decomposition study of Cu 12 Sb 4 S 13 and Cu 4 Sn 7 S 16 phases using high temperature in situ neutron powder diffraction. Our results obtained at a heating rate of 2.5 K/min indicate that: (i) Cu 12 Sb 4 S 13 decomposes above ≈792 K into Cu 3 SbS 3 , and (ii) Cu 4 Sn 7 S 16 decomposes above ≈891 K into Sn 2 S 3 and a copper-rich sulfide phase of sphalerite ZnS-type structure with an assumed Cu 3 SnS 4 stoichiometry. Both phase decompositions are associated to a sulfur volatilization. While the results on Cu 12 Sb 4 S 13 are in fair agreement with recent published data, the decomposition behavior of Cu 4 Sn 7 S 16 differs from other studies in terms of decomposition temperature, thermal stability and products of reaction. Finally, the crystal structure refinements from neutron powder diffraction data are reported and discussed for the Cu 4 Sn 7 S 16 and tetrahedrite Cu 12 Sb 4 S 13 phases at 300 K, and for the high temperature form of skinnerite Cu 3 SbS 3 at 843 K. Abstract

Thermal conductivities (κ) above 300 K are presented for a series of RAlO3perovskites, R2Ti2O7pyrochlores, and R3Al5O12garnets, where Ris a rare earth. We find unusual temperature dependence and suppression of κin PrAlO3, Tb2Ti2O7, and Dy3Al5O12, which arise from interactions between the lattice phonons and electronic energy levels of Rions. These results indicate that proper consideration of electron-lattice coupling is necessary in assessing the high-temperature κof R-based oxides, which are widely being examined for applications to thermal barrier coatings.

Abstract

In this work, a series of Bi2Te3/X mol% MoS2 (X = 0, 25, 50, 75) bulk nanocomposites were prepared by hydrothermal reaction followed by reactive spark plasma sintering (SPS). X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) indicates that the native nanopowders, comprising of Bi2Te3/MoS2 heterostructure, are highly reactive during the electric field-assisted sintering by SPS. The nano-sized MoS2 particles react with the Bi2Te3 plates matrix forming a mixed-anion compound, Bi2Te2S, at the interface between the nanoplates. The transport properties characterizations revealed a significant influence of the nanocomposite structure formation on the native electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity of the initial Bi2Te3 matrix. As a result, enhanced ZT values have been obtained in Bi2Te3/25 mol% MoS2 over the temperature range of 300–475 K induced mainly by a significant increase in the electrical conductivity.
