The aim of this study is twofold: first, to assess the statistical significance of the data used by Pierre Bourdieu in Distinction; second, to test the hypothesis that the volume of capital (i.e., the global amount of capital) allows for a finer discrimination of dispositional differences than the composition of capital (i.e., the respective weight of the different types of capital in the global amount of capital). To these ends, five data samples were submitted to bilateral between-proportion comparison tests. The findings (1) reveal that about two-thirds of the differences reported by P. Bourdieu are significant and (2) support the view that the volume of capital prevails over its composition. Cette etude poursuit deux objectifs : etablir, d'une part, la significativite statistique des donnees ayant servi de base empirique au modele que Pierre Bourdieu propose dans La distinction ; mettre a l'epreuve, d'autre part, l'hypothese selon laquelle le volume de capital (i.e. la quantite globale de capital) constitue, en matiere de differenciation dispositionnelle, une variable plus determinante que la structure du capital (i.e. le poids respectif des differents types de capital au sein du volume global de capital). The environment is increasingly seen as a meta-injustice or master frame of the politics of the new century. If this is indeed the case, environmental concerns should transcend national and organizational boundaries and should have a discursive claims-making space of their own. Research on environmental advocacy, however, shows that many claims for environmental justice are rooted in specific locales and advocacy is often mediated through, and at times overshadowed by, other dimensions of power. Using Nancy Fraser's conception of dimensions of justice, and a Bourdieusian inspired field approach, this paper maps Greenpeace and Sierra Club's press advocacy between 2006 and 2010. In doing so, the paper identifies environmental advocacy spaces and argues that non-parametric approaches to analysing ENGO media advocacy are needed to explain the complexity of multi-scaled political contexts. The studies have investigated on the impact of Pierre Bourdieu on the theories of International Relations (IR) are still insufficient. This article aims to analyze how Bourdieu can contribute to the discipline of International Relations. In this context, it will first cover the discussions on how Bourdieusian analysis has evaluated epistemologic and ontologic problems, it will then adapt the main ideas and concepts of Bourdieu to the IR. The main thesis of this article is that Bourdieusian perspectif provides convincing answers to the problems that exist within the discipline of International Relations at the meta-theoretical level. In otherwise, it argues that the inter-paradigmatic complementarity is possible within the discipline and the concepts have developped by Pierre Bourdieu allow to fill the gaps of the mainstreams theories. Critical reflexivity is a relatively recent strand in journalism studies. It has its advocates, but there are few models. This article offers one possible model, of one moment of practice: an interview with the mother-in-law of an Australian Indigenous woman who died an avoidable death in prison. The critically reflexive approach taken in this research accommodates the individual, social, objective and subjective elements in a practice, and uses the tools provided by Pierre Bourdieu's theory of practice and Donald Schon's work on reflective practice and the reflective practitioner. Together, these approaches provide different but complementary conceptual, analytical, practice-based and narrative tools for making journalism practice, and journalists in the practice, an object of study. Critical reflexivity, by adding an inside perspective, is a valid method by which to add to the range of journalism studies that examine journalism from the outside. Such research allows for an inter-weaving of context, self, others, relationships, theory, history, facts, values and experiences, expanding and enriching our understanding of journalism practice and its place in society. Legitimacy claims can only be made and processes of legitimation can only unfold in a specified context. This article uses Pierre Bourdieu's concept of the social field to name this context and to analyze the construction of the bureaucratic or public administrative field in the United States. Field is meant in a triple sense--public administration as a general, institutionalized field in the structure of government; public administration as a professional field; and public administration as an academic field of study. Thus, rather than the bureaucratic field, the relationship of these bureaucratic fields or an 'ensemble of fields' is analyzed to consider how each field both bounds its own legitimation struggles and draws from other fields for symbolic resources--what Bourdieu called symbolic capital--to establish its legitimacy and position. The multifield quality of public administration is used to show how the nature of the general bureaucratic field is distinct from other fields insofar as it purports to represent a universal, general interest. Bourdieu overlooked the possibility of gendered capital, A number of feminists have taken issue with this and have claimed that uniquely feminine forms of capital exist. This article takes up this proposal and explores two forms of gendered capital--feminine capital and female capital. This article explores these forms of capital operating as cultural resources within the field of paid caring work In the caring field 'femininity' and 'femaleness' appear to be resources women draw upon, but gendered currency operates within limits. This article examines women's perceptions of advantage arising from ownership of feminine dispositions or the experience of feminine selves; the gains that might be made from working with and for similar female others; and the parameters to female privilege. This article examines punk subculture's methods of commercially independent cultural production. While previous scholarship on punk and other youth cultures concludes that resistance is to be found in fashion, style, and symbolic gestures, the author locates dissent in the act of producing music and media that are relatively autonomous from the corporate culture industry, which in punk subcultures is known as the 'do-it-yourself ethic.' Pierre Bourdieu's theory of 'the field of cultural production' is used to explain how cultural producers are motivated to create and perform independently of the commercial marketplace. The findings are based on years of participant-observation and in-depth interviewing within punk subcultures in the Southern California region. Keywords: history of sociology, sociology of knowledge, research program, field theory Abstract This article traces the transatlantic diffusion of Pierre Bourdieu's ideas into American sociology. We find that rather than being received as abstract theory, Bourdieu has been actively put to use to generate new empirical research. In addition, American sociologists have used their findings to problematize and extend his theory. Bourdieu's sociology, in other words, has inspired a progressive research program in the United States. We trace this process in the two main forums for presenting research: journal articles and books. Content analysis of articles published in four major sociology journals reveals that, far from a recent fad, Bourdieu's ideas steadily diffused into American sociology between 1980 and 2004. Case studies of four influential books in turn illustrate how researchers have used Bourdieu's key concepts (capital, field, habitus, and symbolic power) to inform debates in four core subfields (political, economic, cultural, and urban sociology).

For most gay men in major urban centers in North America, 'circuit parties' are at least a passing point of reference, and most will have something to say about these all-night dance parties, characterized by drug use, sexual pursuits, and normative notions of masculinity. Proponents understand the circuit as a site of empowerment; critics see the circuit as a site of danger. Rather than focus on the truth content of these claims, this article, based on a larger ethnographic study of circuit parties, draws on the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Alan Radley to offer an account of the sense of empowerment some attendees experience as they participate in circuit parties. In doing this, this article not only offers an explanation of this empowerment but also interrogates Bourdieu's treatment of the body to propose an immanent understanding of the body's power. The publication of Michael Grenfell's Pierre Bourdieu: Agent Provocateur provides an ideal opportunity for a career retrospective of the academic sociologist who, in recent times, has taken most seriously his role as a public intellectual, indeed, one who gradually warmed to the status of 'universal intellectual' with increasing postmodernist disapproval. Bourdieu and Darbel's classic study of European art museum audiences, The Love of Art (1991), remains one of the most influential academic studies of the social indices of art perception. Its findings were central to Bourdieu's on-going study of culture-mediated power relations, as found in the book Distinction (Bourdieu 1984), as well as social surveys of the behaviour of museum audiences across the world. Much in Bourdieu's account of art perception, however, has begun to appear dated and in need of supplementation. This paper will be a critical but sympathetic re-reading of Bourdieu's sociology of art perception in the light of recent criticisms of his approach. Whilst fine art and its institutions continue to function as sources of social identification and differentiation, this paper argues that the relationship between perception and stratification is somewhat looser than connoted in Bourdieu's work. Beyond the shift to a less rigid taxonomy of social formations, the immense expansion of the visual arts complex has opened up possibilities for the dissemination of art knowledge beyond the cultivated bourgeois. The erosion of boundaries between the aesthetic and the economic, between art and popular culture, are the result of processes of commodification that have placed museums alongside shopping malls within the realms of consumption and entertainment. New audiences have emerged from this mix with less dichotomized--that is, either cultivated or popular--ways of seeing culture that suggest a revision of Bourdieu's overly integrated account of class and cognition. An alternative, 'postmodern', approach to art perception is entertained, where an aesthetics of distinction is replaced by a culture of distraction, but this abstracts culture from any structural grounding. Capturing the shift to an accelerated cultural present, instead, requires a warping of Bourdieu's categories to account for broader patterns of culture and economy and the accentuation of modern visual culture.
