Abstract Background Increasing empirical evidence supports associations between neighborhood environments and physical activity. However, since most studies were conducted in a single country, particularly western countries, the generalizability of associations in an international setting is not well understood. The current study examined whether associations between perceived attributes of neighborhood environments and physical activity differed by country. Methods Population representative samples from 11 countries on five continents were surveyed using comparable methodologies and measurement instruments. Neighborhood environment × country interactions were tested in logistic regression models with meeting physical activity recommendations as the outcome, adjusted for demographic characteristics. Country-specific associations were reported. Results Significant neighborhood environment attribute × country interactions implied some differences across countries in the association of each neighborhood attribute with meeting physical activity recommendations. Across the 11 countries, land-use mix and sidewalks had the most consistent associations with physical activity. Access to public transit, bicycle facilities, and low-cost recreation facilities had some associations with physical activity, but with less consistency across countries. There was little evidence supporting the associations of residential density and crime-related safety with physical activity in most countries. Conclusion There is evidence of generalizability for the associations of land use mix, and presence of sidewalks with physical activity. Associations of other neighborhood characteristics with physical activity tended to differ by country. Future studies should include objective measures of neighborhood environments, compare psychometric properties of reports across countries, and use better specified models to further understand the similarities and differences in associations across countries.

This survey was part of the first systematic large-scale assessment on the practice of sexuality education in Flanders. A representative sample of 400 secondary schools was drawn from a total of 1,050 schools. A positive view toward school-based sexuality education was found for both school principals and teachers. However, time devoted to sexuality education is too restricted, and teaching strategies are too verbal to expect changes in attitude and behavior with regard to contraception and AIDS prevention. Next to the low popularity of active teaching methods, ignorance of the discrepancy between goals set and methods used, and the low value attached to improving the skills of students in using contraceptives, were critical findings. Rather than increasing instruction time, discussion of the relationship among goals, methods, and training in the use of active methods would be more beneficial to improving sexuality education in Flanders., Following passage of legislation in 1990, school-based sexuality education was strongly encouraged in Flanders. Abstract Background The prevalence of childhood obesity has increased during the past decades and is now considered an urgent public health problem. Although stabilizing trends in obesity prevalence have been identified in parts of Europe, preventive efforts in children are still needed. Using the socio-ecological approach as the underlying theoretical perspective, the IDEFICS project aimed to develop, implement and evaluate a community-based intervention for the prevention of childhood obesity in eight European countries. The aim of the present manuscript was to describe the content and developmental process of the IDEFICS intervention. Methods The intervention mapping protocol (IMP) was used to develop the community-based intervention for the prevention of childhood obesity in 3 to 10 years old children. It is a theory- and evidence-based tool for the structured planning and development of health promotion programs that requires the completion of six different steps. These steps were elaborated by two coordinating centers and discussed with the other participating centers until agreement was reached. Focus group research was performed in all participating centers to provide an informed basis for intervention development. Results The application of the IMP resulted in an overall intervention framework with ten intervention modules targeting environmental and personal factors through the family, the school and the community. The summary results of the focus group research were used to inform the development of the overall intervention. The cultural adaptation of the overall intervention was realised by using country specific focus group results. The need for cultural adaptation was considered during the entire process to improve program adoption and implementation. A plan was developed to evaluate program effectiveness and quality of implementation. Conclusions The IDEFICS project developed a community-based intervention for the prevention of childhood obesity by using to the intervention mapping heuristic. The IDEFICS intervention consists of a general and standardized intervention framework that allows for cultural adaptation to make the intervention feasible and to enhance deliverability in all participating countries. The present manuscript demonstrates that the development of an intervention is a long process that needs to be done systematically. Time, human resources and finances need to be planned beforehand to make interventions evidence-based and culturally relevant.

Background and Objectives Reducing sedentary behavior contributes to healthy aging. In order to develop sedentary behavior interventions, insight is needed into older adults' perceptions of (reducing) sedentary behavior. Therefore, this systematic review aims to synthesize qualitative evidence of older adults' perceptions towards (a) the concept of sedentary behavior, (b) barriers and facilitators of sedentary behavior, and (c) solutions and strategies to reduce sedentary behavior. Research Design and Methods A systematic search was conducted in four electronic databases. Inclusion criteria comprised qualitative and mixed-methods studies investigating the perceptions of older adults (mean age: ≥60 years) towards (reducing) sedentary behavior. Quality of the included studies was rated using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) Qualitative Checklist. Relevant data on older adults' perceptions were extracted and imported into NVivo. Two independent reviewers analyzed the data by means of thematic synthesis (line-by-line coding, constructing descriptive (sub)themes, developing analytical themes). Results Fifteen studies were included. Four analytical themes were developed to be considered when aiming to reduce sedentary behavior in older adults: the lack of knowledge on/awareness of sedentary behavior, the habitual nature of sedentary behavior, the importance of enjoyment and convenience, and the key role of aging. Discussion and Implications The reduction of older adults' sedentary behavior will likely be challenging as sedentary behavior seems to be firmly incorporated into older adults' daily routines, and strongly linked with positive reinforcement. Both aspects deserve thoughtful attention by intervention developers and health care professionals who aim to promote healthy aging by reducing sedentary behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
