7. Partners' Relative Income and the Risk of Union Dissolution in Two Institutional Contexts.

Abstract

This article investigates the link between union stability and women's contribution to the family income in married and cohabiting couples. Using a data set linking survey data to information from respondents' annual tax records over a period of nearly 30 years, the study explores the changes over time and the role of institutional context by comparing Quebec and Anglophone Canada. The analysis showed that the risk of dissolution was lowest when men's and women's incomes were similar. The U-shaped pattern held for marriage and cohabitation, and for both regions. If the couple deviated from the equality pattern, women's greater income constituted a more destabilizing factor than men's greater income. Overall, the observed U-shaped link between relative income and union instability did not change over the study period of 30 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article examines children's living arrangements when parents separate, during a period of rapid increase in shared physical custody in the 1990s. With prospective data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (N= 758 families) and a sample of families experiencing parental separation between successive survey cycles, we use multinomial logistic regression techniques to explore how characteristics of parents in intact families (mother's employment, income, and so on) influence physical custody outcomes at separation. Findings indicate that although the way couples share roles while living together has a strong influence on how they divide responsibilities when they separate, other factors also have important roles to play. 18. Impact of Providing Care on the Risk of Leaving Employment in Canada

Abstract

RÉSUMÉ:Le vieillissement de la population entraînera sans doute une augmentation du nombre de personnes ayant besoin d’aide. Il est bien connu qu’une grande part de l’aide reçue provient, et continuera de provenir, du réseau informel de proches et d’amis. Cependant, les effets qu’exerce la prestation de soins sur les trajectoires d’emploi des individus lorsque ces soins sont cumulés à des régimes d’emploi d’intensités variées ou à des responsabilités parentales ont été peu analysés. La présente étude utilise les données de l’Enquête sociale générale, cycles 20 et 21, pour évaluer l’impact de fournir des soins à un conjoint, un parent ou beau-parent, une autre personne apparentée ou une personne non-apparentée sur le risque de quitter son emploi à l’aide des modèles à risques proportionnels. Les analyses montrent que le fait de prodiguer des soins à un parent ou beau-parent augmente la probabilité de quitter son emploi, mais seulement chez les femmes qui travaillent à plein temps, ainsi que chez les hommes et les femmes qui n’ont pas d’enfants ou qui ont seulement des enfants d’âge adulte.ABSTRACT:Population aging is likely to lead to an increase in the number of people in need of assistance. It is well known that a large part of this assistance originates, and will continue to originate, from the network of relatives and friends. However, the effects of the provision of care on individuals’ employment trajectories when this care is combined with employment of varying intensity or with childcare responsibilities have rarely been examined. The present study used proportional hazards models with the General Social Survey, Cycles 20 and 21, to assess the impact of providing care to a partner, a parent or parent-in-law, another relative, or a non-relative on the risk of leaving employment. The analyses show that providing care to a parent or parent-in-law increases the probability of leaving employment only among women employed full-time and among men and women who have no children or only adult children.

Abstract

Jusqu’à présent, les études sur la répartition de cette ressource rare qu’est le temps se sont essentiellement focalisées sur la distribution du temps individuel et sur le partage des activités entre les membres du ménage. L’Enquête sociale générale canadienne de 1998 sur l’Emploi du temps permet d’aller plus loin dans la compréhension de l’organisation de la famille, non seulement en décrivant l’emploi du temps des membres du ménage, mais aussi en mesurant le temps passé à accomplir des activités en commun. Dans cet article, nous exploitons le fait que la présence des enfants du ménage dans la même pièce que le répondant a été systématiquement relevée pour décrire les interactions entre parents et enfants. Nous examinons, d’une part, les variations du temps parental selon différentes caractéristiques des répondants. D’autre part, nous montrons, au moyen d’une analyse multivariée, que le temps parental diffère peu entre les familles intactes et les familles recomposées., To date, research on the use of time, a rare resource, has been essentially focused on the use of time by individuals and on the sharing of activities amongst the members of a same household. The 1998 Canadian General Social Survey on Time Use allows us to take our understanding of family organization somewhat further, not only because it describes the schedules of the various members of a household, but because it also measures the time spent in carrying out shared activities. In the present article, we take advantage of the fact that the survey systematically noted the presence of children of the household when they were in the room with the respondent in order to describe parent-child interaction. On the one hand, we look at the variations in parental time as it relates to different characteristics of the respondents; on the other, we show, through a multivariate analysis, that parental time is much the same, whether we are dealing with a conventional or with a blended family., Hasta ahora, los estudios sobre la repartición de este recurso raro que es el tiempo se han concentrado esencialmente sobre la distribución del tiempo individual y sobre la repartición de las actividades entre los miembros del hogar. La Encuesta Social General Canadiense de 1998 (Canadian General Social Survey ) sobre el empleo del tiempo, permite de ir más lejos en la comprensión de la organización de la familia, no solamente describiendo el empleo del tiempo de los miembros del hogar, sino también midiendo el tiempo pasado en ejecutar actividades en común. En este artículo, explotamos el hecho que la presencia de niños del hogar en la misma pieza que el respondedor ha sido sistemáticamente notada para describir las interacciones entre padres e hijos. Examinamos, de una parte, las variaciones del tiempo parental según las diferentes características de los respondedores. Por otra parte, nosotros mostramos, por medio de un análisis multivariante, que el tiempo parental difiere poco entre las familias intactas y las familias recompuestas.
