The aim of this study is to estimate phytochemical constituents and antioxidant activities of tomato slices treated by microwave heating. Two treatments time were applied, 30 and 300 s. Quantitative analyses of phenols, flavonoids, lycopene, followed by the evaluation of the antioxidant activity by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ion chelating methods, were conducted on ethanolic extracts. Results showed the presence of these bioactive phytonutrients in fresh tomato and that their biodisponibility increases with the duration of the selected heat treatment. The phytochemical content showed important levels of polyphenols (1.92, 1.96, 6.95 mg gallic acid equivalent/g fresh matter) and flavonoids (2.33, 2.57, 10.68 mg RE/g fresh matter), in addition to lycopene (5.772, 31.8654, 40.71 mg/kg fresh matter) of non-treated, treated tomatoes at 30 s and treated tomatoes at 300 s, respectively. Results also revealed a high level of antioxidant activity by both methods with IC50 of 1.69, 1.50, 1.33 µg/ml, for DPPH method and IC50 of 401, 360.5, 299.91 µg/ml, for ion chelating ability. Thus, in our study, we demonstrated that microwave treatments enhance the nutritional quality of tomato slices by enhancing the biodisponibility of some of its content. Abstract: The alkaline platinum hydrides are considered the most promising as hydrogen storage materials. The alloying ability of crystal, elastic constants and related parameters, electronic and optical properties have been studied using pseudo-potential plane–wave method based on the density functional theory. The investigated compounds show a weaker resistance to compression along the principal a-axis and their resistance to shear deformation is lower than the resistance to the unidirectional compression. The band structure indicates that A2PtH6 (A=K, Rb and Cs) are X–X direct gap semiconductors. The effective electron mass at equilibrium has been predicted towards X–Γ, X–W and L–W directions. The strong hybridization between Pt-d and H-s states in the upper valence band translates the existence of covalent bonding character in these compounds. The static optical dielectric constant is inverse proportional to the fundamental gap. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A single-chip dual-band 5.15-5.35-GHz and 2.4-2.5-GHz zero-IF transceiver for IEEE 802.11a/b/g WLAN systems is fabricated on a 0.18-µm CMOS technology. It utilizes an innovative architecture including feedback paths that enable digital calibration to help eliminate analog circuit imperfections such as transmit and receive I/Q mismatch. The dual-band receive paths feature a 4.8-dB (3.5-dB) noise figure at 5.25 GHz (2.45 GHz). The corresponding sensitivity at 54 Mb/s operation is -76 dBm for 802.11a and -77 dBm for 802.11g, both referred at the input of the chip. The transmit chain achieves output 1-dB compression at 6 dBm (9 dBm) at 5 GHz (2.4 GHz) operation. Digital calibration helps achieve an error vector magnitude (EVM) of -33 dB (-31 dB) at 5 GHz (2.4 GHz) while transmitting -4 dBm at 54 Mb/s. The die size is 19.3 mm² and the power consumption is 260 mW for the receiver and 320 mW (270 mW) for the transmitter at 5 GHz (2.4 GHz) operation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seismic rehabilitation of pre-code existing buildings requires the choice of the method of strengthening and the determination of the amount of materials to be used optimally. Accurate evaluation of the building response in terms of its capacity at the initial state and that obtained after application of some reinforcement should be performed. For regular buildings, the nonlinear static analysis procedure constitutes a powerful tool that is used to estimate seismic performance. This procedure is characterised by its high effectiveness to account for the non-linear characteristics of the materials involved and provides a direct mean to shape the capacity curve of the construction; enabling then to make the correct decision about rehabilitation task with regards to a desired performance state. In this work, the nonlinear static pushover analysis was performed by means of ZeusNL software. Use was made of the Moroccan seismic regulations RPS2000 version 2011to determine the targeted seismic demand. Considering a four floor reinforced concrete building which is undersized with regards to actual seismic regulation, jacketing with fiber reinforced composites at different reinforcement rates was analyzed. The obtained results were expressed in terms of the lateral resistance capacity and the building tip displacement. Optimal jacketing of columns was then determined.

This study investigated the effect of Urtica dioica roots etheric extract (UDEE) on oxidative stress, and urine obstruction with histopathological examinations of prostatic and renal tissues,and suggests computational methods as a complementary method, to make a hypothesis on the overall effect of UDEE in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was utilised to characterise UDEE.BPH was induced in rats through daily subcutaneous injections of testosterone propionate. Rats were also orally administered UDEE or a vehicle. After four weeks, prostate weight, urine output, and biochemical markers were evaluated. UDEE treatment demonstrated significant regression of prostatic enlargement, improved biochemical and histopathological characteristics, and regulation of antioxidant activity levels. Phytosteroids stand out, act by inhibiting 5α-reductase and aromatase. This study provides an insight into treatment of BPH, demonstrating safety of this compound towards the kidney compared to finasteride without severe side effects.

The aim of this article is to examine the two most commonly used terms to describe the most common sexual disorder, namely premature ejaculation or early ejaculation. The recent recommendations of the French Society of Urology (2023) and the International Society for Sexual Medicine use the term "premature". However, the EAU guidelines (2024) report the new terminological definition of the International Classification of Diseases, replacing "premature" with "early". It was necessary to refer to the etymological definitions of the two terms to distinguish between "early" and "premature". If the word "early" refers to a rapid development that can be desired, the term "premature" implies an occurrence before the appropriate time without any control. In our view, the term 'premature' is more appropriate in this context, as it highlights the uncontrolled and unwanted part of ejaculation., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Masson SAS. Tris(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) is a characteristic and widely used organophosphorus flame retardant. TCPP is comprised of four isomers and the most abundant is tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate. TCPP can be released into the environment, with potential impacts on living organisms and humans due to its extensive industrial use. Aiming to assess the potential risks of TCPP on human health and the environment, its toxic and genotoxic effects-using organisms from different trophic levels, i.e., bacteria, green microalgae, and human cells-were investigated. TCPP exposure at nominal concentrations of 10, 20, 30 and 40 μg mL -1 was studied to identify the potential risk of inducing genotoxic effects in cultured human lymphocytes. Treatment with 30 and 40 μg mL -1 of TCPP induced marginally significant micronuclei (MN) frequencies as well as cytotoxic effects. Freshwater microalgae species treated with TCPP (0.5, 1, 10, 20 and 50 μg L -1 ) showed different growth rates over time. All the tested microalgae species were adversely affected after exposure to TCPP during the first 24 h. However, differences among the microalgae species' sensitivities were observed. In the case of the freshwater species, the most sensitive was found to be Chlorococcum sp . The marine algal species Dunaliella tertiolecta and Tisochrysis lutea were significantly affected after exposure to TCPP. The effects of TCPP on Aliivibrio fischeri that were observed can classify this flame retardant as a "harmful" compound. Our results suggest a potential risk to aquatic organisms and humans from the wide utilization of TCPP and its consequent release into the environment. These results highlight that further research should be conducted to investigate the effects of TCPP individually and in combination with other organophosphorus flame retardants in various organisms. In addition, the concern induced by TCPP points out that measures to control the introduction of TCPP into the environment should be taken.

Wastewater is considered a hotspot niche of multi-drug and pathogenic bacteria such as Enterobacteriaceae-producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL-E). Thus, the aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the prevalence of ESBL-E in different wastewater sources. Different databases (Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library) were searched from inception to March 2021. Data were analyzed using random-effects modeling, and subgroup and meta-regression analyses were used to ascertain heterogeneity among the subgroups. Fifty-seven observational studies were selected, and the pooled prevalence of ESBL-E in wastewater was 24.81% (95% CI, 19.28-30.77). Escherichia coli had the highest ESBL prevalence. The blaCTX-M genes were the most prevalent in the selected studies (66.56%). The pooled prevalence of ESBL was significantly higher in reports from America (39.91%, 95% CI, 21.82-59.51) and reports studying hospital and untreated wastewaters (33.98%, 95% CI, 23.82-44.91 and 27.36%, 95% CI, 19.12-36.42). Overall, this meta-analysis showed that the prevalence of ESBL-E in wastewater is increasing over time and that hospital wastewater is the most important repository of ESBL-E. Therefore, there is a need for developing new sewage treatment systems that decrease the introduction of resistant bacteria and antibiotic residues.

L-ascorbate (ASC) is essential for human health. Therefore, there is interest in increasing the ASC content of crops like tomato. High irradiance induces accumulation of ASC in green tomato fruits. The D-mannose/L-galactose biosynthetic pathway accounts for the most ASC in plants. The myo-inositol and galacturonate pathways have been proposed to exist but never identified in plants. The D-mannose/L-galactose starts from D-glucose. In a series of experiments, we tested the hypothesis that ASC levels depend on soluble carbohydrate content when tomato fruits ripen under irradiances that stimulate ASC biosynthesis. We show that ASC levels considerably increased when fruits ripened under light, but carbohydrate levels did not show a parallel increase. When carbohydrate levels in fruits were altered by flower pruning, no effects on ASC levels were observed at harvest or after ripening under irradiances that induce ASC accumulation. Artificial feeding of trusses with sucrose increased carbohydrate levels, but did not affect the light-induced ASC levels. We conclude that light-induced accumulation of ASC is independent of the carbohydrate content in tomato fruits. In tomato fruit treated with light, the increase in ASC was preceded by a concomitant increase in myo-inositol.

Background: Anthracycline-induced symptomatic heart failure is often irreversible, underlining the usefulness of pretreatment risk assessment. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) before or after chemotherapy is associated with a later decrease in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF); however, whether prechemotherapy GLS is associated with symptomatic heart failure and cardiac death in patients treated with anthracyclines is unknown., Methods: Patients with hematologic cancers treated with anthracyclines who underwent prechemotherapy echocardiography between November 2006 and June 2011 were retrospectively recruited. Basic demographic data, end-diastolic and end-systolic left ventricular volumes, LVEF, and GLS were measured. Clinical cardiac events (CEs) were defined as cardiac death or symptomatic heart failure. The association of prechemotherapy parameters with CEs was analyzed using proportional hazard analysis., Results: Over a median follow-up period of 1,593 days (range, 13-2,891 days) after the start of chemotherapy, 28 of 450 patients (6%) experienced CEs. Prechemotherapy LVEF and GLS were lower in patients with CEs compared with those without CEs (58 ± 10% vs 62 ± 7% [P = .005] and -15.0 ± 2.8% vs -19.7 ± 2.7% [P < .0001], respectively). Diabetes (hazard ratio [HR], 7.06; P < .0001), hypertension (HR, 2.22; P = .04), LVEF (HR, 0.93; P = .005), and GLS (HR, 1.47; P < .0001) were associated with CEs. After controlling for clinical variables, prechemotherapy GLS remained independently associated with CEs (P < .0001). GLS less than the absolute value of -17.5% was found in 105 patients (23%) and was associated with a sixfold increase in CEs (P < .0001)., Conclusions: Prechemotherapy GLS is an effective tool to stratify patients at high risk for CEs after anthracycline therapy and may help tailor treatments to decrease anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity., (Copyright © 2016 American Society of Echocardiography. Background: Trastuzumab, a HER2 monoclonal antibody, has transformed the prognosis of patients with the aggressive HER2-positive breast cancer type. Trastuzumab augments the cardiotoxic effects of anthracyclines, but its effect is thought to be at least partially reversible. The objective of this study was to examine the time trends of left ventricular (LV) size and function in a cohort of women treated with anthracyclines and trastuzumab., Methods: Twenty-nine patients >18 years of age with first-time breast cancer treated with anthracyclines and trastuzumab were monitored using echocardiography before, at the completion of, and at a median follow-up of 24.7 months (interquartile range, 15.9-34 months) after the end of their cancer treatment. LV volume, LV ejection fraction, and global peak systolic longitudinal strain and strain rate were measured in the apical four- and two-chamber views. Left ventricular ejection fraction was measured using a modified Simpson's biplane method., Results: LV end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes increased at the end of treatment compared with baseline and did not recover during follow-up. Left ventricular ejection fraction, strain, and strain rate decreased at the end of treatment compared with baseline (from 64 ± 6% to 59 ± 8%, from -20.0 ± 2.5% to -17.6 ± 2.6%, and from -1.26 ± 0.23 to -1.13 ± 0.16 sec(-1), respectively; P < .05 for all parameters) and remained decreased at follow-up., Conclusions: LV dilation and subclinical impairment in cardiac function persists >2 years after the end of anthracycline and trastuzumab treatment, without significant recovery after trastuzumab cessation, suggestive of long-term underlying cardiac damage and remodeling., (Copyright © 2015 American Society of Echocardiography. We studied the relationship between spermogram parameters and biochemical elements in seminal plasma. In this way we searched an association between immunoglobulin levels in seminal plasma and spermogram parameters. The spermogram is usually performed in our laboratory for investigation of infertility. Using immunonephelometry, we measured immunoglobulin (Ig) G and A levels in the seminal plasma of 17 patients. Averages levels of IgG and IgA were 83.3 and 33.6 mg/L, respectively. IgG and IgA levels appeared to be significantly different (p = 0.001), and were significantly associated. A correlation between IgG values and coiled tails percentage was noted in patients having IgA below 20 mg/L (p < 0,001). In conclusion, the measurement of IgG and IgA levels in seminal plasma might constitute a valuable diagnosis tool for the evaluation of infertility.
