Abstract Aims Diagnosing acute heart failure (AHF) remains particularly challenging in older patients. Natriuretic peptides are recommended as valuable diagnostic tools in this context. This study aims to establish the diagnostic thresholds of B‐type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N‐terminal pro‐B‐type natriuretic peptide (NT‐proBNP) for AHF in patients aged over 75 years, both with and without co‐morbidities. Methods and results In this retrospective longitudinal multicentre cohort study, data were gathered from 12 071 hospitalized patients aged 75 years or older, presenting with acute dyspnoea and undergoing BNP or NT‐proBNP measurement within 48 h of admission across 10 Assistance Publique‐Hôpitaux de Paris facilities between 2011 and 2022, encompassing geriatrics, cardiology, and pulmonology departments. Final diagnoses were categorized using ICD‐10 criteria as either AHF or other acute respiratory conditions such as COPD exacerbation, pulmonary embolism, and pneumonia. The mean (SD) age of the population was 84.0 (80.0, 89.0) years, with 52.7% being female. Out of these, 7946 (65.8%) were diagnosed with AHF upon discharge. For NT‐proBNP, the identified ‘optimal’ threshold for diagnosing AHF was 1748 ng/L, with a positive predictive value (PPV) of 84%. Among patients aged over 85 years, a threshold of 2235 pg/mL for NT‐proBNP was associated with an 84% PPV. In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), a threshold of 2332 pg/mL for NT‐proBNP demonstrated a PPV of 90% for AHF diagnosis. Additionally, in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
The use of high energy transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) as probes of the distant universe relies on the close collaboration between space and ground facilities. In this context, the Sino-French mission SVOM has been designed to combine a space and a ground segment and to make the most of their synergy. On the ground, the 1.3 meter robotic telescope COLIBRI, jointly developed by France and Mexico, will quickly point the sources detected by the space hard X-ray imager ECLAIRs, in order to detect and localise their visible/NIR counterpart and alert large telescopes in minutes. COLIBRI is equipped with two visible cameras, called DDRAGO-blue and DDRAGO-red, and an infrared camera, called CAGIRE, designed for the study of high redshift GRBs candidates. Being a low-noise NIR camera mounted at the focus of an alt-azimutal robotic telescope imposes specific requirements on CAGIRE. We describe here the main characteristics of the camera: its optical, mechanical and electronics architecture, the ALFA detector, and the operation of the camera on the telescope. The instrument description is completed by three sections presenting the calibration strategy, an image simulator incorporating known detector effects, and the automatic reduction software for the ramps acquired by the detector. This paper aims at providing an overview of the instrument before its installation on the telescope., Comment: Accepted by Experimental Astronomy

This work describes a new type of sensor for growth process monitoring named broadband cavity-enhanced optical flux monitoring sensor (BBCE-OFM). Like existing optical flux monitoring (OFM) solutions, it relies on absorption spectroscopy. However, the implementation of an optical cavity reduces the measurement uncertainty, enabling efficient operation even at very low growth rates. Using the BBCE-OFM sensor mounted in our solid-source oxide molecular beam epitaxy reactor, we achieved an uncertainty of ±2% on the measurement of Sr and Ti growth rates in SrTiO
3 at around 1 Ml/min, to be compared to the ±16% obtained in the same conditions using a conventional OFM setup. Furthermore, our sensor architecture, based on an echelle monochromator and LEDs replacing the hollow cathode lamps used in standard OFM sensors, is more robust against drift. The subspecies Roselin githagine Bucanetesgithagineus zedlitzi is found in arid and semi-arid environments of North Africa. In this study, we tracked this species in an urban landscape within a Saharan region to evaluate the impact of the urban gradient on its distribution, to characterize the reproductive parameters in an urban environment, and to report the first case of nesting of this species, in an urban setting. Over a seven-month study period, we regularly visited 90 listening points distributed in three habitats (urban, suburban, and rural). Statistical analysis of the data, using one- way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for recent counts in the three habitats, showed a significant result with a p-value of 0.04, indicating a significant difference between the different habitats. Furthermore, the study of the reproductive parameters of this species revealed that the population had a late laying date and relatively larger egg dimensions compared to other populations studied in Algeria.

The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. Healthcare fraud ,imbalanced data ,machine learning (ML) ,noisy data ,Electrical engineering. Electronics. Nuclear engineering ,TK1-9971 - Abstract
The healthcare fraud detection field is constantly evolving and faces significant challenges, particularly when addressing imbalanced data issues. Previous studies mainly focused on traditional machine learning (ML) techniques, often struggling with imbalanced data. This problem arises in various aspects. It includes the risk of overfitting with Random Oversampling (ROS), noise introduction by the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE), and potential crucial information loss with Random Undersampling (RUS). Moreover, improving model performance, exploring hybrid resampling techniques, and enhancing evaluation metrics are crucial for achieving higher accuracy with imbalanced datasets. In this paper, we present a novel approach to tackle the issue of imbalanced datasets in healthcare fraud detection, with a specific focus on the Medicare Part B dataset. First, we carefully extract the categorical feature “Provider Type” from the dataset. This allows us to generate new, synthetic instances by randomly replicating existing types, thereby increasing the diversity within the minority class. Then, we apply a hybrid resampling method named SMOTE-ENN, which combines the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) with Edited Nearest Neighbors (ENN). This method aims to balance the dataset by generating synthetic samples and removing noisy data to improve the accuracy of the models. We use six machine learning (ML) models to categorize the instances. When evaluating performance, we rely on common metrics like accuracy, F1 score, recall, precision, and the AUC-ROC curve. We highlight the significance of the Area Under the Precision-Recall Curve (AUPRC) for assessing performance in imbalanced dataset scenarios. The experiments show that Decision Trees (DT) outperformed all the classifiers, achieving a score of 0.99 across all metrics.

We conducted an ant inventory in urban and suburban spaces in Bejaia city to deal with this need for more information about ant biodiversity in the Algerian urban environment. The two methods, hand collecting and pitfall traps, are carried out 24 days in three months (May, June, and July) of 2022. In the urban habitats, 2,653 ant individuals were collected, comprising ten species, six genera and three subfamilies. In the suburban habitats, 6,706 ant specimens were collected, comprising 19 species, 11 genera, and three subfamilies. The most abundant subfamilies in both urban and suburban habitats are Formicinae, followed by Myrmicinae and Dolichoderinae. The results showed that suburban habitats are more diversified (H’= 1.72) than urban habitats (H’= 1.25). The equitability values for suburban and urban habitats are moderate, with 0.58 and 0.54, respectively. The Jaccard similarity index value is 0.45, indicating an essential turnover of ant species between urban and suburban habitats. The ant community’s composition differed between sampled sites (NMDS, Stress = 0.013). The average dissimilarity (as per SIMPER) was 90.37%. Four species (T. simrothi, L. cf. grandis, P. cicatricosa, and L. myops) contributed to 70% of the differences between sites of urban and suburban habitats.

The Bouchegouf Plain is an industrial and mainly agricultural region. The results of analyses revealed high concentrations of physicochemical and bacteriological parameters in surface and underground waters. The objective of this research is to study the impact of the various discharges on water and the environment. Physicochemical and bacteriological analysis methods are used to characterize the surface and groundwaters. The synthesis of geological, hydrogeological and physicochemical data made it possible to develop models of underground flows and to delimit the perimeters of protection of the wells. The results showed a significant threat to the environment (Mellah and Seybouse streams) and to the waters of the alluvial aquifer. Indeed, the high concentrations of physicochemical and bacteriological parameters, in particular at the point of discharge of the yeast plant, can have harmful effects on fauna, flora and human health (waterborne diseases). Simulations of groundwater flows and pollutant transfer showed that groundwater is strongly affected by the drainage of the Seybouse wadi. Road traffic can also be the source of accidental pollution. HIGHLIGHTS Groundwater quality is based on the physical and chemical parameters that are influenced by geological formations.; The methodology used for the processing of the analysis results is based on multivariate statistical methods.; The integration of statistical approaches and geochemical methods was applied to investigate the regional factors and processes governing the chemical composition of water in the study area.;

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
We present the noise performance of High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMT) developed by CNRS-C2N laboratory. Various HEMT's gate geometries with 2 pF to 230 pF input capacitance have been studied at 4 K. A model for both voltage and current noises has been developed with frequency dependence up to 1 MHz. These HEMTs exhibit low dissipation, excellent noise performance and can advantageously replace traditional Si-JFETs for the readout of high impedance thermal sensor and semiconductor ionization cryogenic detectors. Our model predicts that cryogenic germanium detectors of 30 g with 10 eV heat and 20 eVee baseline resolution are feasible if read out by HEMT based amplifiers. Such resolution allows for high discrimination between nuclear and electron recoils at low threshold. This capability is of major interest for Coherent Elastic Neutrino Scattering and low-mass dark matter experiments such as Ricochet and EDELWEISS., Comment: submitted to Journal of Low Temperature Physics, special issue for the 18th International Workshop on Low Temperature Detectors 22-26 July 2019 - Milano, Italia

Abstract Background A defining feature of prolonged critical illness is muscle wasting, leading to impaired recovery. Supplementation with a tailored blend of amino acids may bolster the innate gut defence, promote intestinal mucosa repair and limit muscle loss. Methods This was a monocentric, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study that included patients with sepsis or acute respiratory distress syndrome. Patients received a specific combination of five amino acids or placebo mixed with enteral feeding for 21 days. Markers of renal function, gut barrier structure and functionality were collected at baseline and 1, 2, 3 and 8 weeks after randomization. Muscle structure and function were assessed through MRI measurements of the anterior quadriceps volume and by twitch airway pressure. Data were compared between groups relative to the baseline. Results Thirty-five critically ill patients were randomized. The amino acid blend did not impair urine output, blood creatinine levels or creatinine clearance. Plasma citrulline levels increased significantly along the treatment period in the amino acid group (difference in means [95% CI] 5.86 [1.72; 10.00] nmol/mL P = 0.007). Alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase concentrations were lower in the amino acid group than in the placebo group at one week (ratio of means 0.5 [0.29; 0.86] (P = 0.015) and 0.73 [0.57; 0.94] (P = 0.015), respectively). Twitch airway pressure and volume of the anterior quadriceps were greater in the amino acid group than in the placebo group 3 weeks after randomization (difference in means 10.6 [0.99; 20.20] cmH20 (P = 0.035) and 3.12 [0.5; 5.73] cm3/kg (P = 0.022), respectively). Conclusions Amino acid supplementation increased plasma citrulline levels, reduced alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase levels, and improved twitch airway pressure and anterior quadriceps volume. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02968836. Registered November 21, 2016.

Rockfalls can cause loss of life and material damage. In Northern Morocco, rockfalls and rock avalanche-deposits are frequent, especially in the Dorsale Calcaire morpho-structural unit, which is mostly formed by Jurassic limestone and dolostone formations. In this study, we focus exclusively on its northern segment, conventionally known as “the Haouz subunit”. First, a rockfall inventory was conducted. Then, two datasets were prepared: one covering exclusively the source area and the other representing the entirety of the mass movements (source + propagation area). Two algorithms were then used to build rockfall susceptibility models (RSMs). The first one (Logistic Regression: LR) yielded the most unreliable results, where the RSM derived from the source area dataset significantly outperformed the one based on the entirety of the rockfall affected area, despite the lack of significant visual differences between both models. However, the RSMs produced using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were more or less similar in terms of accuracy, despite the source area model being more conservative. This result is unexpected given the fact that previous studies proved the robustness of the LR algorithm and the sensitivity of ANN models. However, we believe that the non-linear correlation between the spatial distribution of the rockfall propagation area and that of the conditioning factors used to compute the models explains why modeling rockfalls in particular differs from other types of landslides.

This study is carried out on two winter period (2018-2019 and 2019-2020) in Lake El-Golea (Ghardaïa, northern Sahara of Algeria). Its objective is to determine the ornithological value of this lake and to in ferits importance in maintaining aquatic avifauna during the winter season. This inventory shows a diversity equivalent to forty-one species belonging to thirteen families and nine orders of which eighteen are protected by various Algerian and international laws. The most represented family is that of the Anatidae with twelve species while the family with the highest number is that of the Phenicopteridae represented only by one species, the Greater Flamingo (Phenicopterus roseus). These waterbirds occupy the lake in different ways: the insectivores are distributed on the banks and in the shallow areas of the lake while, the herbivores, polyphages and piscivores are concentrated in the deepest areas and in the centre of the lake. It is important to note, however, the presence of two vulnerable species, the Common Pochard (Aythya ferina) and the Marbled Duck (Marmaronetta angustirostris) and anear-threatened species, the Greater Ring- Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca).

During many decades, the town of Moulay Yacoub underwent an important urban expansion to meet the high demand on housing fuelled by tourism activities, which constitute the backbone of the town's economy. Unfortunately, the majority of buildings, both private and public, suffer from varying levels of damage related to the lithological, climate, and geomorphic settings of the area. In fact, the town is built on a marly hill prone to various types of mass movements, ranging from shallow soil creep to large slides. In addition, vertical displacement related to swelling/shrinkage behaviour of these Miocene marls is widespread in the area. The present paper presents a multi-disciplinary approach to investigate the activity and the interaction between slow-moving urban landslides and expansive soils within the urban perimeter of Moulay Yacoub. In fact, the severe seasonal contrast characterised by intense rainfall over short periods constitutes the main triggering factor of the instability phenomena in the region. Moreover, the desiccation cracks affecting marly soils are indicators of their expansive behaviour, which is very obvious in geotechnical tests results. The other geotechnical parameters obtained from laboratory tests show that the shallow marl samples are severely weathered compared with those of the compact material extracted at greater depth. The borehole data and seismic noise survey allows the detection of several impedance contrasts corresponding to the weathered layer--bedrock boundary, which in some cases corresponds to the rupture surface of the inventoried landslides. The very slow but perennial activity of the later processes is well documented by the inclinometers, the PS-InSAR monitoring, and building damage assessment surveys. Indeed, this case study highlights the complementarity of techniques used in this multi-disciplinary approach that give a multi-faceted understanding of slope instability processes and should provide a blueprint for future site-specific studies in the region. Key words: urban landslide, expansive soils, multi-disciplinary analysis, building damage.
