Abstract

This technical memorandum describes a method for determining the transverse deflections of a uniformly loaded, thin circular plate of constant thickness supported by single or multiple rings of equally spaced discreet points. The rotations are assumed free at each point. This could have application in the design of telescope mirror supports that must minimize structural gravitational deformations. It could also be of general use to the structural analyst.

15. Structural Modeling of the Next Generation Space Telescope's Primary Mirror

Abstract

In recent years, astronomical observations made with space telescopes have dramatically increased our understanding of the history of the universe. In particular, the cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have yielded observations that cannot be achieved at ground-based observatories. We now have views of the universe before galaxies existed (from COBE) and views of young galaxies (from HST). But none of the existing observatories can provide views of the period in which the galaxies were born, about 100 million to one billion years after the "big bang". NASA expects the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) to fill this gap. An investigation into the structural modeling of the primary mirror of the NGST, its methodology and results are presented.

Abstract

This research project examined the potential hazards of two important insecticides on survival, reproduction and larval growth of bumblebees Bombus terrestris. We tested two insect growth regulators (IGRs), the chitin synthesis inhibitor diflubenzuron and the ecdysone agonist tebufenozide; both important in the control of insect pests in greenhouses. The two IGRs were applied via three different routes of exposure (contact via topical application, and orally via the drinking sugar water and via pollen) under laboratory conditions and tested at their respective maximum field recommended concentrations (MFRC). In a second test, a doseresponse assay was performed to calculate LC50 values. Generally, the two IGRs did not show acute toxicity on worker bumblebees. However, there was a dramatic reduction on brood production especially after diflubenzuron oral treatment with pollen and sugar water. In contrast tebufenozide did not exert a significant effect on brood production. Overall our laboratory results suggest that diflubenzuron should be applied with caution in combination with bumblebees, while tebufenozide is compatible with the pollinator.Keywords: insect growth regulator; diflubenzuron; tebufenozide; toxicity; bumblebees Cette recherche a examiné les risques potentiels de deux insecticides importants à l’égard de la survie, la reproduction et la croissance larvaire des bourdons (Bombus terrestris). Nous avons testé deux régulateurs de croissance des insectes (IGRs): un inhibiteur de la synthèse de la chitine (diflubenzuron) et un agoniste de l'ecdysone (tebufenozide) qui sont utilisés dans le contrôle des insectes ravageurs des cultures sous serres. Les deux IGRs ont été appliqués selon trois voies d'exposition (contact par application topique et oralement par de l’eau sucrée et du pollen) dans les conditions de laboratoire et aux concentrations maximales recommandées en plein champ (MFRC). Dans un deuxième essai, une analyse de dose-réponse a été réalisée pour déterminer les concentrations létales CL50. En général, les deux IGRs n'ont pas manifesté de toxicité à l’égard des ouvrières. Cependant, on note une réduction drastique sur la production des couvains après traitement oral avec le pollen et l’eau sucrée pour le diflubenzuron. En revanche, le tebufenozide n'a pas d’effet significatif. De façon générale, nos résultats suggèrent que le diflubenzuron doit être appliqué avec prudence en combinaison avec les bourdons, tandis que le tebufenozide est compatible avec le pollinisateur.Mots clés : Régulateurs de croissance des insectes; Diflubenzuron; Tebufenozide; Toxicité; Bourdon.

Abstract

National audience; Un programme de recherche collaborative, le projet NOVINPAK®, s’est déroulé de décembre 2010 à Juin 2014 afin de proposer un conditionnement innovant. L’objectif était de développer une solution allégée en PET monocouche, 100% recyclable, incluant 25% de PET-recyclé minimum qui s’insère au mieux dans les filières de recyclage et de valorisation actuelles et qui possède des propriétés barrières optimales vis-à-vis de l’oxygène et des arômes pour assurer le maintien de la qualité du vin dans le temps. Ce programme, de recherche financé par le Fond Unique Interministériel, et réalisé par les industriels VAL d’ORBIEU–UCCOAR en tant que chef de file, SIDEL et PURE ENVIRONNEMENT en collaboration avec des partenaires de recherche institutionnels, a permis de développer une solution éco-conçue de bouteilles de vin en PET pour vin de qualité. Sont présentés ici les principaux résultats de cette étude, sur les axes matériaux (allègement, intégration de PET-recyclé, intégration de barrières à l’oxygène dans le PET monocouche), les résultats des tests de migration pour la sécurité sanitaire ainsi que les résultats de l’analyse du cycle de vie (ACV). Un second article présentera plus en détails, l’évolution des gaz, du SO2 et les analyses sensorielles effectuées en comparaison à un conditionnement de référence, la bouteille en verre 75cL, tout au long du stockage sur 12 mois.

26. Case Study: A College-Wide Engineering Capstone Experience at the University of Tennessee.

Abstract

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville has developed a pilot study for a college of engineering multi-disciplinary capstone experience, engaging three dedicated college departments to address a design opportunity presented by a local non-profit organization. The College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee was approached by the Friends of the Smokies (Friends) requesting the development of an innovative solution to reduce vandalism of donation boxes located throughout the nearby national park. While the Friends are capable of upgrading and modifying the small structures, the team recognized an opportunity to engage in outreach and solicited assistance from the university with the intention of identifying innovative and unique design concepts to improve the design of the structures. Both the Friends and the Dean of the Tickle College of Engineering recognized the opportunity to immerse students in the design process and a multi-disciplinary team was selected not only to address the community partner needs, but also to pilot a college-wide capstone experience. Management of the project with this new academic experience provides an opportunity to research and share best practices related to such an opportunity. The design project has engaged students and faculty from materials science, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering through an entire academic year experience. While the student design team is challenged with developing a final product that integrates all aspects of their engineering disciplines, the faculty team is also charged with ensuring the students gain a valuable academic experience within this project. To accomplish these objectives, the faculty team has a shared management approach and seeks to identify means and methods to replicate the successful experience in future semesters. The following paper contains a summary of the project shared by the local partner, a brief literature review of similar efforts towards college-wide capstone programs, discussion of the course management approach identified by the faculty, challenges experienced, and a summary of lessons learned. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Current fibrinolytic therapies fail to achieve optimum reperfusion in many patients. Low-molecular-weight heparins and platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors have shown the potential to improve pharmacological reperfusion therapy. We did a randomised, open-label trial to compare the efficacy and safety of tenecteplase plus enoxaparin or abciximab, with that of tenecteplase plus weight-adjusted unfractionated heparin in patients with acute myocardial infarction. METHODS: 6095 patients with acute myocardial infarction of less than 6 h were randomly assigned one of three regimens: full-dose tenecteplase and enoxaparin for a maximum of 7 days (enoxaparin group; n=2040), half-dose tenecteplase with weight-adjusted low-dose unfractionated heparin and a 12-h infusion of abciximab (abciximab group; n=2017), or full-dose tenecteplase with weight-adjusted unfractionated heparin for 48 h (unfractionated heparin group; n=2038). The primary endpoints were the composites of 30-day mortality, in-hospital reinfarction, or in-hospital refractory ischaemia (efficacy endpoint), and the above endpoint plus in-hospital intracranial haemorrhage or in-hospital major bleeding complications (efficacy plus safety endpoint). Analysis was by intention to treat. FINDINGS: There were significantly fewer efficacy endpoints in the enoxaparin and abciximab groups than in the unfractionated heparin group: 233/2037 (11.4%) versus 315/2038 (15.4%; relative risk 0.74 [95% CI 0.63-0.87], p=0.0002) for enoxaparin, and 223/2017 (11.1%) versus 315/2038 (15.4%; 0.72 [0.61-0.84], p

Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: Developing feasible, reliable and valid methods for the evaluation of clinical reasoning is challenging. AIM: To explore feasibility, reliability, and validity evidence for a post-encounter form assessing clinical reasoning. METHOD: A free-text, post-encounter form was used in an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) station to assess clinical reasoning for end-of-second-year medical students. Feasibility was assessed by time to complete form. Inter-rater reliability was assessed by kappa. Validity evidence was obtained by comparing scores from individual items on the post-encounter form and other components in this OSCE station (i.e., standardized patient checklist and oral presentation rating form). Additional validity evidence was gathered by comparing scores on this station with other course performance graded events. RESULTS: Feasibility and estimated reliability were high, and several lines of validity evidence were supported. CONCLUSIONS: The scores from an end-of-second-year, medical school, post-encounter form yielded adequate psychometric properties and can be used for the evaluation of clinical reasoning. Moreover, this form of assessment and its scoring could translate to other venues.

Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: Educational theories predict conflicting results for the effect of increasing the authenticity of the teaching format of complex information on educational outcomes. We sought to determine the effect of increasingly authentic small-group, preclerkship teaching format on clerkship outcomes to further enlighten this debate. SUMMARY: Students enrolled in a prospective randomized crossover trial that involved three content areas. For each content area, three teaching formats were tested. Participants were randomized to teaching format by content area. Clerkship outcomes were performance on an objective structured clinical exam, a DVD exam, internal medicine clerkship grades, and performance on the subject examination. The data were analyzed using a multivariate analysis of covariance. One hundred and thirty-three (78%) students participated. Teaching format did not have a statistically significant effect on any of the specified clerkship outcomes. However, number of patients seen was significantly associated with higher scores in respective outcomes by topic. CONCLUSIONS: Second-year teaching format did not directly influence subsequent clerkship performance. Our study adds to the literature by demonstrating that the authenticity of preclinical teaching format does not appear to matter for clerkship performance; however, the number of actual patients seen does appear to influence related clerkship outcomes.

32. Multiobjective optimization in an unreliable failure-prone manufacturing system

Abstract

Purpose – This article considers a corrective and preventive maintenance model with a view to both minimizing cost and maximizing system availability. The model examined is based on a m identical machine system subject to unpredictable breakdown and repair, and the maintenance strategy used is based on the existing block-replacement policy, which consists in replacing components upon failure or preventively, at scheduled intervals (T). Spare part inventory management is based on the (S, Q) model, whereby an order is placed when the replacement stock level drops below a given safety threshold level (S). At that time, a replacement part quantity (Q) is ordered, and is received after a stochastic lead time (τ). Design/methodology/approach – The experimental multiobjective proposed approach combines a simulation model and a statistical method (desirability approach, experimental design, response surface methodology and variance analysis (ANOVA)) to determine the best system parameters. The desirability function is used to convert a multiresponse problem into a maximization problem with a single aggregate measure. Finding – The proposed model jointly minimizes the overall maintenance cost and maximizes system availability using a multiobjective optimization desirability function. Practical implication – The multiobjective model can be used in a real manufacturing environment to help business decision makers determine the best compromise system parameters and adjust said parameters to obtain desired response variables (overall production cost and system availability). Originality/value – The proposed model allows the simultaneous optimization of two response variables, and determines the best system parameter compromise between the system cost minimization and the system availability maximization.

Abstract

In order to stimulate selection for plant-associated bacteria with the potential to improve Cd phytoextraction, yellow lupine plants were grown on a metal-contaminated field soil. It was hypothesised that growing these plants on this contaminated soil, which is a source of bacteria possessing different traits to cope with Cd, could enhance colonisation of lupine with potential plant-associated bacteria that could then be inoculated in Cd-exposed plants to reduce Cd phytotoxicity and enhance Cd uptake. All cultivable bacteria from rhizosphere, root and stem were isolated and genotypically and phenotypically characterised. Many of the rhizobacteria and root endophytes produce siderophores, organic acids, indole-3-acetic acid ( IAA) and aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate ( ACC) deaminase, as well as being resistant to Cd and Zn. Most of the stem endophytes could produce organic acids (73.8%) and IAA (74.3%), however, only a minor fraction (up to 0.7%) were Cd or Zn resistant or could produce siderophores or ACC deaminase. A siderophore- and ACC deaminase-producing, highly Cd-resistant Rhizobium sp. from the rhizosphere, a siderophore-, organic acid-, IAA- and ACC deaminase-producing highly Cd-resistant Pseudomonas sp. colonising the roots, a highly Cd- and Zn-resistant organic acid and IAA-producing Clavibacter sp. present in the stem, and a consortium composed of these three strains were inoculated into non-exposed and Cd-exposed yellow lupine plants. Although all selected strains possessed promising in vitro characteristics to improve Cd phytoextraction, inoculation of none of the strains (i) reduced Cd phytotoxicity nor (ii) strongly affected plant Cd uptake. This work highlights that in vitro characterisation of bacteria is not sufficient to predict the in vivo behaviour of bacteria in interaction with their host plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore possible performance differences in interpersonal skills (IPS) ratings as a function of candidate and standardized patient (SP) gender.Methodology: The IPS scores and SP characteristics for 79,999 patient encounters were studied. This included 18,325 (20.36%) female candidate to female SP, 26,872 (29.86%) male candidate to female SP, 18,281 (20.31%) female candidate to male SP, and 16,521 (29.47%) male candidate to male SP interactions.Results: The analysis did not reveal a significant candidate gender by SP gender effect. There were no meaningful differences in IPS scores as a function of SP or candidate gender.Conclusions: The non-significant interaction between SP gender and candidate gender provides some evidence that male and female candidates are being assessed equivalently by male and female SPs. This result, combined with the extremely weak relationship between gender (candidate or SP) and IPS ratings, provides additional support for the fairness and defensibility of the IPS measures. Abstract

The use of experts to judge performance assessments is desirable because ratings of performances, carried out by experts in the content domain of the examination, are often considered to be the "gold standard." However, one drawback of using experts to rate performances is the high cost involved. A more economic alternative for scoring performance assessments entails using analytic scoring, which typically involves assigning points to individual traits present in the performance, and summing to arrive at a single score. This strategy is less costly, but may lack the richness of holistic scoring. This study investigates the use of regression-based techniques to predict expert judgments on a written performance task from a combination of analytic scores. Potentially, this will result in scores that approximate the richness of holistic ratings while maintaining the cost-effectiveness of analytic scoring. Results show that a substantial proportion of variance in expert judgments can be explained by the analytic scores, but that decisions based on actual expert judgments and the predicted expert judgments were not sufficiently consistent to warrant the substitution of one score for the other.
