14. Critical assessments and thermodynamic modeling of BaO-SiO2 and SiO2-TiO2 systems and their extensions into liquid immiscibility in the BaO-SiO2-TiO2 system

Abstract

This study discusses rational reproduction of liquid immiscibility in the BaO–SiO2–TiO2 system. While a ternary assessment requires sub-binary descriptions in the same thermodynamic model, the related sub-binary systems BaO–SiO2, BaO–TiO2 and SiO2–TiO2 liquid and solid phases have been evaluated using different thermodynamic models in the literature. In this study, BaO–SiO2 and SiO2–TiO2 were assessed using the Ionic Two Sublattice model (I2SL) based on experimental data from the literature. BaO–TiO2 was already assessed using this model. Binary descriptions developed were then used for the assessment of liquid immiscibility in the BaO–SiO2–TiO2 system. Ternary interaction parameters were found necessary for rational reproduction of the new ternary experimental data gathered in the present work. The model parameters for each system were evaluated using a CAPLHAD approach. A set of parameters is proposed. They show good agreement between the calculated and experimental equilibrium liquidus, liquid immiscibility and thermochemical properties in the BaO–SiO2–TiO2 system.

15. Influence of amorphous phase separation on the crystallization behavior of glass-ceramics in the BaO–TiO2–SiO2 system

Abstract

The possible role of a prior amorphous phase separation on the subsequent crystallization has been the topic of vigorous debates over the last decades and has not yet been clarified, especially regarding the role of the interfaces created by the phase separation. This study proposes to focus on the interplay between a prior amorphous phase separation and the crystallization of fresnoite in the BaO–TiO2–SiO2 system. The crystallization behavior of a non-stoichiometric composition inside the miscibility gap (called APS) is compared with the stoichiometric composition (called FRES) and a non-stoichiometric composition outside the miscibility gap (called NoAPS). The crystallization mechanisms are compared using differential thermal analysis (DTA) by calculating the Avrami parameters and the activation energies as a function of the particle size. The DTA study shows that the two non-stoichiometric compositions exhibit a pronounced surface crystallization behavior whereas FRES undergoes bulk nucleation. This is supported by a multi-scale microstructure characterization. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that the amorphous phase separation and the associated interfaces do not play any significant role in the nucleation step. Moreover, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and local orientation measurements show that the growth of the dendrites is not hindered by the SiO2-rich droplets. The final stage of crystallization of APS is tentatively explained by two composition effects that must be further investigated: the viscosity effect and the formation of a eutectic.

Abstract

Three patients with nasal visual field defects are described. In each case it is believed that compression of the lateral fibres of the optic nerve by the anterior cerebral or internal carotid artery was the cause. Binasal hemianopia can thus be produced by a single lesion and is as much a true hemianopia as the common bitemporal one. The value of careful neuroradiological investigation to display the relationships of a tumour to the chiasma, optic nerves, and related vessels and thus explain the field defects is demonstrated. Abstract

Formalin-fixed brain slices from four cases of subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy in which a firm diagnosis could be made both clinically and pathologically have been studied by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The slices were subsequently embedded in paraffin-wax or celloidin and sections were cut in the same plane as the MRI slices. There was a good correlation between the extent and severity of the abnormal MRI signal and the pathological changes. Areas of diffuse MRI abnormality corresponded with areas of axonal and myelin loss with gliosis, and small "lacune"-like lesions corresponded with lacunar infarcts histologically. Sparing of the subcortical U-fibres was seen histologically and on MRI. The abnormal signal probably originates from increased tissue water attributable to gliosis and an expanded extracellular space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Twenty-seven patients with an isolated brain stem syndrome, thought to be due to demyelination, were examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A brain stem lesion was identified in 25, and clinically silent lesions outside the brain stem were demonstrated in 20. MRI was more sensitive than evoked potentials in detecting brain stem and other lesions. The scan findings were compared with those in 23 patients with multiple sclerosis, who had chronic brain stem dysfunction, with particular reference to the distribution of abnormalities and the MRI characteristics of the lesions. The relaxation times, T1 and T2, of the lesions were measured by MRI. These values were seen to fall in serial studies of acute lesions, but remained unchanged in the chronic lesions. Abstract

Forty-nine patients with clinical features of vascular disease in the vertebrobasilar territory were examined to evaluate the diagnostic performance of computed tomography. It provided useful information in the diagnosis of acute vascular lesions in patients in whom a definite episode had occurred not longer than 2 weeks before computed tomography was undertaken. It was of value in both haemorrhagic and thromboembolic groups but in many patients angiography was required to make a substantive diagnosis.
