Introduction: Elasmobranchs, such as sharks and rays, are among the world's most endangered vertebrates, with over 70% loss in abundance over the past 50 years due to human impacts. Zooarchaeological baselines of elasmobranch diversity, distribution, and exploitation hold great promise for contributing essential historical contexts in the assessment of contemporary patterns in their taxonomic diversity and vulnerability to human-caused extinction. Yet, the historical ecology of elasmobranchs receives relatively less archaeological attention compared to that of ray-finned fishes or marine mammals, largely due to issues of taxonomic resolution across zooarchaeological identifications. Methods: We explore the use of Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) for species identification in this unstudied group, using an archaeological case study from the marine environments of the Florida Keys, a marine biodiversity hotspot that is home to an array of elasmobranch species and conservation efforts. By comparison with 39 modern reference species, we could distinguish 12 taxa within the zooarchaeological assemblage from the Clupper archaeological site (Upper Matecumbe Key) that included nine sharks, two rays and a sawfish. Results and discussion: The results indicate that, through additional complexity of the collagen peptide mass fingerprint, obtained due to the presence of the cartilaginous type II collagen, ZooMS collagen peptide mass fingerprinting provides exceptionally high taxonomic resolution in this group, yielding species-level identifications in all cases where sufficient reference material was used. This case study also highlights the added value of ZooMS for taxa that are more difficult to distinguish in zooarchaeological analyses, such as vertebrae of the Atlantic sharpnose shark (Rhizoprionodon terraenovae) and the hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna spp.) in the Florida Keys. Therefore, the application of collagen peptide mass fingerprinting to elasmobranchs offers great potential to improve our understanding of their archaeological past and historical ecology. In this paper, we examine previously unstudied archaeological fish remains recovered during Mansuy's first excavation in 1902 from the inland Samrong Sen midden site in Cambodia and which are currently stored at the Musée de l'Homme, Paris, France. The remains are dated by association to the Neolithic/Bronze Age between 2206 and 1892 cal. bc from a time when the development of metal age trade and exchange networks contributed substantially to the success of many cultures in this diverse region. We focus on the taxonomy of the fish captured and the implications for technology and regional networks. The identification of two perforated shark vertebrae beads indicates that, during the late Neolithic to Bronze Age period, trade and exchange between coastal and inland communities was prominent on mainland Southeast Asia. The occupation of small islands presents particular challenges for people largely related to limited terrestrial resources and susceptibility to natural disasters. Nevertheless, the challenges and risks inherent in maintaining stable populations on small islands can be offset or overcome through the use of maritime technologies and exchange networks. The archaeology of Here Sorot Entapa rockshelter (HSE) on Kisar Island in the Wallacean Archipelago provides an unparalleled record for examining these issues in Southeast Asia. Kisar is the smallest of the Wallacean islands known to have a Pleistocene occupation record, and one of the smallest permanently inhabited today. Our results indicate that Here Sorot Entapa was first occupied in the terminal Pleistocene by people with advanced maritime technology who made extensive use of local marine resources and engaged in social connections with other islands through an obsidian exchange network. As a result, populations appear to have been maintained on the island for approximately 6,000 years. In the early Holocene occupation at HSE ceased for unknown reasons, and the site was not reoccupied until the mid-Holocene, during which time a major change in the lithic resources can be observed and the exchange network appears to have ceased.
