We study the angular dependence in polarized light of the optical absorption for the Er$^{3+}$ transition $^{4}I_{15/2} \rightarrow $$^{4}I_{13/2}$ in Y$_2$SiO$_5$, revealing thus the associated anisotropy and the orientation of the related absorption principal directions in the dielectric plan perpendicular to the monoclinic axis b. The measurements are performed at low temperature. This allows us to isolate the lowest crystal field levels in the ground and excited states. We spectrally resolve and independently characterize the two yttrium substitution sites in the Y$_2$SiO$_5$ matrix. The absorption tensor components cannot be unambiguously determined yet while only considering the investigated dielectric plane. Still, measurements remarkably demonstrate that this transition of interest well resolved at low temperature is not only a magnetic-dipole allowed transition but indeed a hybrid electric-magnetic transition.

The competitive multi-armed bandit (CMAB) problem is related to social issues such as maximizing total social benefits while preserving equality among individuals by overcoming conflicts between individual decisions, which could seriously decrease social benefits. The study described herein provides experimental evidence that entangled photons physically resolve the CMAB in the 2-arms 2-players case, maximizing the social rewards while ensuring equality. Moreover, we demonstrated that deception, or outperforming the other player by receiving a greater reward, cannot be accomplished in a polarization-entangled-photon-based system, while deception is achievable in systems based on classical polarization-correlated photons with fixed polarizations. Besides, random polarization-correlated photons have been studied numerically and shown to ensure equality between players and deception prevention as well, although the CMAB maximum performance is reduced as compared with entangled photon experiments. Autonomous alignment schemes for polarization bases were also experimentally demonstrated based only on decision conflict information observed by an individual without communications between players. This study paves a way for collective decision making in uncertain dynamically changing environments based on entangled quantum states, a crucial step toward utilizing quantum systems for intelligent functionalities.

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We present a ground-to-space quantum key distribution (QKD) mission concept and the accompanying feasibility study for the development of the low earth orbit CubeSat payload. The quantum information is carried by single photons with the binary codes represented by polarization states of the photons. Distribution of entangled photons between the ground and the satellite can be used to certify the quantum nature of the link: a guarantee that no eavesdropping can take place. By placing the entangled photon source on the ground, the space segments contains only the less complex detection system, enabling its implementation in a compact enclosure, compatible with the 12U CubeSat standard (12 dm3). This reduces the overall cost of the project, making it an ideal choice as a pathfinder for future European quantum communication satellite missions. The space segment is also more versatile than one that contains the source since it is compatible with a multiple of QKD protocols (not restricted to entangled photon schemes) and can be used in quantum physics experiments, such as the investigation of entanglement decoherence. Other possible experiments include atmospheric transmission/turbulence characterization, dark area mapping, fine pointing and tracking, and accurate clock synchronization; all crucial for future global scale quantum communication efforts., Comment: The CSUG Team: Yves Gilot, Etienne LeCoarer, Juana Rodrigo, Thierry Sequies, Vincent Borne, Guillaume Bourdarot, Alexis Christidis, Jesus Segura, Benoit Boulanger, Veronique Boutou, Mylene Bouzat, Mathieu Chabanol, Laurent Fesquet, Hassen Fourati, Michel Moulin, Jean-Michel Niot, Rodrigo Possamai Bastos, Bogdan Robu, Etienne Rolland, Sylvain Toru. Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Mobile charges and lattice polarization interact in ferroelectric materials because of the Coulomb interaction between the mobile free charges and the fixed lattice dipoles. We have investigated this mutual screening in KTiOPO4, a ferroelectric/superionic single crystal in which the mobile charges are K+ ions. The ionic accumulation close to the crystal surfaces leads to orders of magnitude increase of the Second Harmonic Generation. This ionic space charge model is supported by the absence of such an effect in non-ionic conductor but ferroelectric BaTiO3, by its temperature dependence in KTiOPO4 and by its broad depletion at domain walls., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, which destroyed a significant part of the seismically vulnerable city of Port-au- Prince, the country's capital, a 12-storey reinforced concrete building that behaved well was investigated to understand its dynamic response. This paper completes the experimental work presented in a companion paper, in which the dynamic properties of the building were obtained from ambient vibration tests, and from which a finite-element model was updated. This paper's main objectives are: (i) to understand the causes that led to the observed structural damage; and (ii) to estimate the likely seismic excitation at the site of the building. Several nonlinear analyses involving various ground motion intensities were conducted and the results were compared with the damage reported during the on-site survey. The numerical models reproduced the observed damages well and helped to explain them. The overall response of the mixed stiff frame-wall structure was clearly dominated by the high stiffness of the shear walls, showing that this type of structural system helps in keeping reasonable interstorey drift levels. Overall, the building's structure seems to have responded linearly to all the ground motions investigated, but deformation demands imposed to the frame by the shear walls lead to local damages. Key words: nonlinear analysis, RC building, frame-wall interaction, Haiti earthquake, structural damage. Despite all the damages encountered during the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the 12-storey reinforced-concrete Digicel building behaved well, sustaining only reparable damages. Visual assessment to characterize the damages sustained and ambient vibration tests (AVT) were carried out to identify the building's key dynamics properties (natural vibration frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios). ETABS was used to generate finite element (FE) models before and after the AVT, to evaluate the capabilities of common modelling assumptions to predict the dynamic behaviour of structures. Nonautomated model updating was carried out to generate a model representing the building's actual dynamic behaviour in its damaged state. The study showed that the finite element method (FEM) is reliable for predicting the dynamic behaviour of structures, but is very sensitive to the modelling assumptions. The models could predict the vibration frequencies precisely, but an accurate representation of the mode shapes required careful model updating. Key words: ambient vibration, reinforced concrete building, structural dynamic, Haiti earthquake, mode shapes, frequencies, damping, FE modelling. - Abstract
We report the first measurements of phase-matching angles for second-harmonic generation, sum- and difference-frequency generations performed over the transparency range of the uniaxial alpha-GeO2 crystal. A simultaneous fit of these data provided dispersion equations. The optical damage threshold and the magnitude of the nonlinear coefficient d(11) are also determined. We found vertical bar d(11)(GeO2) (0.67 mu m)vertical bar = 0.76 +/- 0.09 pm/V. (C) 2021 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

- Abstract
We worked on a new scheme of quasi-phase matching (QPM) based on the negative first order of the spatial modulation of the sign of the second-order nonlinearity. Applying this scheme in the case of angular-QPM (AQPM) in a biaxial crystal reveals new directions of propagation for efficient parametric frequency conversion as well as "giant" spectral acceptances. The experimental validation is performed in a periodically poled rubidium-doped KTiOPO4 biaxial crystal. This new approach naturally extends to other periodically poled uniaxial crystals such as periodically poled LiNbO3., QC 20201201

We present a ground-to-space quantum key distribution (QKD) mission concept and the accompanying feasibility study for the development of the associated low earth orbit nanosatellite payload. The quantum information is carried by single photons with the binary codes represented by polarization states of the photons. Distribution of entangled photons between the ground and the satellite can be used to certify the quantum nature of the link: a guarantee that no eavesdropping can take place. By placing the entangled photon source on the ground, the space segments contains “only” the less complex detection system, enabling its implementation in a compact enclosure, compatible with the 12U CubeSat standard ( ${\sim}12~\mbox{dm}^{3}$ ). Other possible experiments include atmospheric transmission/turbulence characterization, dark area mapping, fine pointing and tracking, and accurate clock synchronization; all crucial for future global scale quantum communication efforts.

- Abstract
The polar faces, (001) and (001), of the ferroelectric KTiOPO4 crystal are not equivalent by symmetry. The stability and the growth rate of both faces have been determined by growing thick crystalline layers by liquid phase epitaxy onto oriented crystalline commercial KTiOPO4 slabs. Growth solutions with different molar compositions in the system KTiOPO4-KPO3-KF and different supersaturation degrees end up with the same result. Whereas the (00 (1) over bar) faces are stable under all the experimental conditions used, the (001) ones are not stable and turn into (00 (1) over bar) faces. Head-to-head domains oriented along the [010] axis at vertical bar 7 +/- 1 degrees vertical bar to the [001] axis propagate from the (001) surface of the seed to the as-grown crystalline layers. The final epitaxies obtained by this process show two (00 (1) over bar) polar end faces; so a twin-crystal along the c direction was grown., QC 20181217

International audience; Bulk crystals cut and polished as spheres or cylinders are unique tools for measuring the angular distribution of any linear or nonlinear optical property as well as for designing widely and continuously tunable parametric devices. The aim of this article is to describe the specific techniques of shaping such high quality samples, and their use in methods of optical measurements and devices that we implemented.

- Abstract
Shaping and patterning of bulk or thin layer crystals and ceramics are one of the new frontiers in the field of laser and nonlinear optics. These technical aspects are rarely published, but they are crucial for the fundamental studies as well as for technology and applications. This special issue features 15 articles that focus on the orienting, cutting, polishing, coating, bonding, writing guides, or poling crystals and ceramics for bulk- or micro-optics. We have here a corpus of contributions describing the techniques as well as the gain they bring in terms of functionality or performance of the fabricated components devoted to optics and photonics.
