This presentation reports on work that a SANREM innovation lab research team has conducted in Cambodia. The study sought to: (i.) identify field-and-farm-level conservation agriculture production systems that will minimize smallholder costs and risks while maximizing benefits and (ii) adoption and measure crop yield and biomass from conservation agriculture production systems, and compare them with conventional plow-based systems LTRA-12 (Conservation agriculture for food security in Cambodia and the Philippines)

Degraded landscapes are expanding annually in Southeast Asia. Rural poverty in upland communities increases pressure on natural resources like forest, soil and water . These are the last “capital” for the poor and they are rapidly diminishing due to non-sustainable management. This poster introduces the Long Term Research Activity (LTRA) 12 within the SANREM CRSP program. The objectives of this LTRA are to ensure food security and reverse soil degradation in Southeast Asia (Cambodia and the Philippines) through Conservation Agriculture practices. This presentation calls for a comprehensive plan for future development to protect the natural resources and promote agricultural and rural development in Cambodia. For development to be beneficial, it is important to consider some of the current constraints on the physical conditions. These include soil quality, climate fluctuations, and floods; all of which contribute to market instability and food insecurity. Further, uneven population distribution in Cambodia makes comprehensive planning and natural resource management difficult. However, agriculture is a very important part of the economy and lifestyles of the Cambodian people and the agricultural sector provides 70% of employment in this area. New management techniques and plans are necessary because research has shown that monoculture practices and conventional tillage are resulting in C losses in the soil in many areas. As a solution, this presentation proposes the use of DMC (Direct seeding Mulch based Cropping systems) and explains its three principles: no soil's tillage, soil's permanent plants' cover, and the succession and rotation of species. Additional solutions include the creation of 'biodiversity corridors' in a region of intense agriculture and in between protected areas of Cambodia, as well as buffer areas along rivers. National audience; Ce dictionnaire est le résultat d’un projet original qui croise perspectives nouvelles et point sur l’état des connaissances, qui mêle articles sur les grands espaces de la planète, les principaux types de production et d’acteurs et coups de projecteurs sur des aspects moins connus. Une équipe de plus de 40 spécialistes a été réunie pour offrir plus de 500 entrées sur près de 800 pages, fruits d’un choix raisonné. Illustrant l’ouverture de la géographie aux autres sciences humaines et au monde en général, de nombreux agronomes, agro-économistes, spécialistes de relations internationales, historiens ont été conviés à participer à cet ouvrage. Il est aussi l’occasion pour des praticiens de la question de porter leurs connaissances au-delà de leur communauté scientifique, de préciser les termes d’un débat complexe, de faire partager leurs expériences, leurs craintes, leurs espoirs et peut-être, à travers une meilleure connaissance de ces enjeux, contribuer, avec les armes qui sont les nôtres, à aider à nourrir les hommes.
