Systematic studies of the gradual fabrication by means of carbon ion-implantation of high-quality 6H-SiC layers on silicon surfaces have been carried out. The fluence of carbon ions varied from 5*10^15 cm-2 to 10^17 cm-2. Results of first-principle calculations, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy demonstrate the amorphization of silicon substrate without any tendency to the segregation of carbon in the samples synthesized at low fluencies. The formation of a SiO2-like structure at this stage was also detected. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), XRD, and Raman spectroscopy demonstrate that an increase in carbon content at 10^17 cm-2 fluence leads to the growth of 6H-SiC films on the surface of the amorphous silicon substrate. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) data obtained also demonstrates the decreasing of surface roughens after the formation of SiC film. XPS and Raman spectra suggest that excessive carbon content leaves the SiC matrix via the formation of an insignificant amount of partially oxidized carbon nanostructures. Optical measurements also support the claim of high-quality 6H-SiC film formation in the samples synthesized at 10^17 cm-2 fluence and demonstrate the absence of any detectable contribution of nanostructures formed from excessive carbon on the optical properties of the material under study., Comment: Accepted to the Appl. In this article, we report the results of relatively facile fabrication of carbon nanodots from single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT and MWCNT). The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman measurements show that the obtained carbon nanodots are quasi-two-dimensional objects with a diamond-like structure. Based on the characterization results, a theoretical model of synthesized carbon nanodots was developed. The measured absorption spectra demonstrate the similarity of the local atomic structure of carbon nanodots synthesized from single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. However, the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of nanodots synthesized from both sources turned out to be completely different. Carbon dots fabricated from MWCNTs exhibit PL spectra similar to nanoscale carbon systems with sp3 hybridization and a valuable edge contribution. At the same time nanodots synthesized from SWCNTs exhibit PL spectra which are typical for quantum dots with an estimated size of ~0.6-1.3 nm., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, to appear in PCCP

The results of fabrication and characterization of atomic structure of nanocrystalline thin layers of Y2O3 in cubic and monoclinic phases is reported. Experimental data demonstrate crystalline ordering in nanocrystalline films with average grain size of ~10-14 nm both for cubic and monoclinic studied structures. Density Functional Theory (DFT) based simulations demonstrate insignificant differences of electronic structure of these phases in the bulk and on the surfaces. Theoretical modeling also pointed out the significant broadening of valence and conductive bands caused by means of energy levels splitting in agreement with experimental data (X-ray photoelectron and photoluminescence spectra). The presence of various intrinsic and extrinsic defects (including surface adsorption of carbon mono- and dioxide) does not promote visible changes in electronic structure of Y2O3 surface for both studied phases. Optical absorption and luminescence measurements indicate insignificant bandgap reduction of Y2O3 nanocrystalline layers and the very little contribution from defect states. Simulation of extrinsic compression and expanding demonstrate stability of the electronic structure of nanocrystalline Y2O3 even under significant strain. We propose and demonstrate a novel range of models to accurately determine the optical properties of nitrogen-free carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with ordered graphene layered structures. We confirm the results of our models against the full range of experimental results for CQDs available from an extensive review of the literature. The models can be equally applied to CQDs with varied sizes and with different oxygen content in the basal planes of the constituent graphenic sheets. We demonstrate that the experimentally observed blue fluorescent emission of nitrogen-free CQDs can be associated with either small oxidised areas on the periphery of the graphenic sheets, or with sub-nanometre non-functionalised islands of sp2-hybridised carbon with high symmetry confined in the centres of oxidised graphene sheets. Larger and/or less symmetric non-functionalised regions in the centre of functionalised graphene sheet are found to be sources of green and even red fluorescent emission from nitrogen-free CQDs. We also demonstrate an approach to simplify the modelling of the discussed sp2-islands by substitution with equivalent strained polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Additionally, we show that the bandgaps (and photoluminescence) of CQDs are not dependent on either out-of-plane corrugation of the graphene sheet or the spacing between sp2-islands. Advantageously, our proposed models show that there is no need to involve light-emitting polycyclic aromatic molecules (nanographenes) with arbitrary structures grafted to the particle periphery to explain the plethora of optical phenomena observed for CQDs across the full range of experimental works., Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures, accepted to Nanoscale Research Letters

We present the results of ab initio modeling of structure of dilute Ti-Fe, a typical representative of quenched Ti-based transition-metal alloys. We have demonstrated that beyond the solubility limit this alloy cannot be described in common terms of substitutional and interstitial alloys. Instead, very stable local clusters are formed in both low-temperature hcp and high-temperature bcc phases of alloys, with almost identical local structures. This gives an example of geometrically frustrated state and explains unusual concentration behavior of M\"ossbauer spectra discovered long ago for this system., Comment: 11 pages 5 figures accepted in J. Directly measuring elementary electronic excitations in dopant $3d$ metals is essential to understanding how they function as part of their host material. Through calculated crystal field splittings of the $3d$ electron band it is shown how transition metals Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni are incorporated into SnO$_2$. The crystal field splittings are compared to resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments, which measure precisely these elementary $dd$ excitations. The origin of spectral features can be determined and identified via this comparison, leading to an increased understanding of how such dopant metals situate themselves in, and modify the host's electronic and magnetic properties; and also how each element differs when incorporated into other semiconducting materials. We found that oxygen vacancy formation must not occur at nearest neighbour sites to metal atoms, but instead must reside at least two coordination spheres beyond. The coordination of the dopants within the host can then be explicitly related to the $d$-electron configurations and energies. This approach facilitates an understanding of the essential link between local crystal coordination and electronic/magnetic properties.

Here, we examine the influence of surface chemical reactivity toward ambient gases on the performance of nanodevices based on two-dimensional materials "beyond graphene" and novel topological phases of matter. While surface oxidation in ambient conditions was observed for silicene and phosphorene with subsequent reduction of the mobility of charge carriers, nanodevices with active channels of indium selenide, bismuth chalcogenides and transition-metal dichalcogenides are stable in air. However, air-exposed indium selenide suffers of p-type doping due to water decomposition on Se vacancies, whereas the low mobility of charge carriers in transition-metal dichalcogenides increases the response time of nanodevices. Conversely, bismuth chalcogenides require a control of crystalline quality, which could represent a serious hurdle for up scaling.

Two different types of boron-doped graphene/copper interfaces synthesized using two different flow rates of Ar through the bubbler containing the boron source were studied. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and optically stimulated electron emission (OSEE) measurements have demonstrated that boron-doped graphene coating provides a high corrosion resistivity of Cu-substrate with the light traces of the oxidation of carbon cover. The density functional theory calculations suggest that for the case of substitutional (graphitic) boron-defect only the oxidation near boron impurity is energetically favorable and creation of the vacancies that can induce the oxidation of copper substrate is energetically unfavorable. In the case of non-graphitic boron defects oxidation of the area, a nearby impurity is metastable that not only prevent oxidation but makes boron-doped graphene. Gallium oxide epitaxial layers grown on native substrates and basal plane sapphire were characherized by X-ray phtotelectron and optical reflectance spectroscopies. The XPS electronic structure mapping was coupled to Density functional theory calculations.

The cubic (c) and monoclinic (m) polymorphs of Gd2O3 were studied using the combined analysis of several materials science techniques - X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) based calculations for the samples under study were performed as well. The cubic phase of gadolinium oxide (c-Gd2O3) synthesized using a precipitation method exhibits spheroidal-like nanoclusters with well-defined edges assembled from primary nanoparticles with an average size of 50 nm, whereas the monoclinic phase of gadolinium oxide (m-Gd2O3) deposited using explosive pyrolysis has a denser structure compared with natural gadolinia. This phase also has a structure composed of three-dimensional complex agglomerates without clear-edged boundaries that are ~21 nm in size plus a cubic phase admixture of only 2 at. % composed of primary edge-boundary nanoparticles ~15 nm in size. These atomic features appear in the electronic structure as different defects ([Gd...O-OH] and [Gd...O-O]) and have dissimilar contributions to the charge-transfer processes among the appropriate electronic states with ambiguous contributions in the Gd 5p - O 2s core-like levels in the valence band structures. The origin of [Gd...O-OH] defects found by XPS was well-supported by PL analysis. The electronic and atomic structures of the synthesized gadolinias calculated using DFT were compared and discussed on the basis of the well-known joint OKT-van der Laan model, and good agreement was established., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, accepted in Appl. In this work, we report X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and valence band (VB) spectroscopy measurements of surfactant-free silver nanoparticles and silver/linear carbon chains (Ag@LCC) structures prepared by pulse laser ablation (PLA) in water. Our measurements demonstrate significant oxidation only on the surfaces of the silver nanoparticles with many covalent carbon-silver bonds but only negligible traces of carbon-oxygen bonds. Theoretical modeling also provides evidence of the formation of robust carbon-silver bonds between linear carbon chains and pure and partially oxidized silver surfaces. A comparison of theoretical and experimental electronic structures also provides evidence of the presence of non-oxidized linear carbon chains on silver surfaces. To evaluate the chemical stability, we investigated the energetics of the physical adsorption of oxidative species (water and oxygen) and found that this adsorption is much preferrable on oxidized or pristine silver surfaces than the adsorption of linear carbon chains, which makes the initial step in the oxidation of LCC energetically unfavorable., Comment: Accepted to the Carbon journal

The following scenarios of Re-embedding into SiO2-host by pulsed Re-implantation were derived and discussed after XPS-and-DFT electronic structure qualification: (i) low Re-impurity concentration mode -> the formation of combined substitutional and interstitial impurities with Re2O7-like atomic and electronic structures in the vicinity of oxygen vacancies; (ii) high Re-impurity concentration mode -> the fabrication of interstitial Re-metal clusters with the accompanied formation of ReO2-like atomic structures and (iii) an intermediate transient mode with Re-impurity concentration increase, when the precursors of interstitial defect clusters are appeared and growing in the host-matrix structure occur. An amplification regime of Re-metal contribution majority to the final Valence Band structure was found as one of the sequences of intermediate transient mode. It was shown that most of the qualified and discussed modes were accompanied by the MRO (middle range ordering) distortions in the initial oxygen subnetwork of the a-SiO2 host-matrix because of the appeared mixed defect configurations., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, accepted to J. We report the results of X-ray spectroscopy and Raman measurements of as-prepared graphene on a high quality copper surface and the same materials after 1.5 years under different conditions (ambient and low humidity). The obtained results were compared with density functional theory calculations of the formation energies and electronic structures of various structural defects in graphene/Cu interfaces. For evaluation of the stability of the carbon cover, we propose a two-step model. The first step is oxidation of the graphene, and the second is perforation of graphene with the removal of carbon atoms as part of the carbon dioxide molecule. Results of the modeling and experimental measurements provide evidence that graphene grown on high-quality copper substrate becomes robust and stable in time (1.5 years). However, the stability of this interface depends on the quality of the graphene and the number of native defects in the graphene and substrate. The over threshold carbon-loadings (~50 at.%) of initial TiO2-hosts and posterior Cu-sensitization (~7 at.%) was made using pulsed ion-implantation technique in sequential mode with 1 hour vacuum-idle cycle between sequential stages of embedding. The final Cx-TiO2:Cu samples were qualified using XPS wide-scan elemental analysis, core-levels and valence band mappings. The results obtained were discussed on the theoretic background employing DFT-calculations. The combined XPS and DFT analysis allows to establish and prove the final formula of the synthesized samples as Cx-TiO2:[Cu+][Cu2+] for the bulk and Cx-TiO2:[Cu+][Cu0] for thin-films. It was demonstrated the in the mode of heavy carbon-loadings the remaining majority of neutral C-C bonds (sp3-type) is dominating and only a lack of embedded carbon is fabricating the O-C=O clusters. No valence base-band width altering was established after sequential carbon-copper modification of the atomic structure of initial TiO2-hosts except the dominating majority of Cu 3s states after Cu-sensitization. Motivated by the recent development of quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) methods in the area of nanotoxicology, we proposed an approach to develop additional descriptors based on results of first principles calculations. For evaluation of the biochemical activity of metallic nanoparticles, we consider two processes: ion extraction from the surface of a specimen to aqueous media and water dissociation on the surface. We performed calculations for a set of metals (Al, Fe, Cu, Ag, Au, Pt). Taking into account the diversity of atomic structures of real metallic nanoparticles, we performed calculations for different models such as (001) and (111) surfaces, nanorods, and two different cubic nanoparticles of 0.6 and 0.3 nm size. Significant energy dependence of the processes from the selected model of nanoparticle suggests that for the correct description we should combine the calculations for the several representative models. In addition to the descriptors of chemical activity of the metallic nanoparticles for the two studied processes, we propose descriptors for taking into account the dependence of chemical activity from the size and shape of nanoparticles. An atomic and electronic structure of the bulk and thin-film morphologies of ZnO were modified using pulsed Bi-ion implantation (1x1017 cm-2 fluence, 70 min exposure under Bi-ion beam, EBi+ = 30 keV, pulsed ion-current density of not more than 0.8 mA/cm2 with a repetition rate of 12.5 Hz). The final samples were qualified by X-ray photoelectron core-level and valence band mapping spectroscopy applying ASTM materials science standard. The spectroscopy data obtained was discussed on the basis of DFT-models for Bi-embedding into ZnO host-matrices. It was established that in the case of direct Bi-impurities insertion into the employed ZnO-host for both studied morphologies neither the only "pure" Bi2O3-like phase nor the only "pure" Bi-metal will be preferable to appear as a secondary phase. An unfavorability of the large cluster agglomeration of Bi-impurities in ZnO-hosts has been shown and an oxygen 2s electronic states pleomorphizm was surely established., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted to Appl. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of air-physisorbed defective carbon nano-onions evidences in favor of microwave assisted formation of weakly-bound paramagnetic complexes comprising negatively-charged O2- ions and edge carbon atoms carrying pi-electronic spins. These complexes being located on the graphene edges are stable at low temperatures but irreversibly dissociate at temperatures above 50-60 K. These EPR findings are justified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrating transfer of an electron from the zigzag edge of graphene-like material to oxygen molecule physisorbed on the graphene sheet edge. This charge transfer causes changing the spin state of the adsorbed oxygen molecule from S = 1 to S = 1/2 one. DFT calculations show significant changes of adsorption energy of oxygen molecule and robustness of the charge transfer to variations of the graphene-like substrate morphology (flat and corrugated mono- and bi-layered graphene) as well as edges passivation. The presence of H- and COOH- terminated edge carbon sites with such corrugated substrate morphology allows formation of ZE-O2- paramagnetic complexes characterized by small (<50 meV) binding energies and also explains their irreversible dissociation as revealed by EPR., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted in Carbon journal

The results of combined experimental and theoretical study of substitutional and clustering effects in Bi-doped TiO2 hosts (bulk and thin-film morphologies) are presented. Bi-doping of the bulk and thin-film titanium dioxide was made with help of pulsed ion-implantation (E(Bi+) = 30 keV, D = 1 * 1017 cm-2) without posterior tempering. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) qualification (core-levels and valence bands) and Density-Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were employed in order to study the electronic structure of Bi-ion implanted TiO2 samples. According to XPS data obtained and DFT calculations, the Bi -> Ti cation substitution occurs in Bi-implanted bulk TiO2, whereas in the thin-film morphology of TiO2:Bi the Bi-atoms have metal-like clusters segregation tendency. Based on the combined XPS and DFT considerations the possible reasons and mechanism for the observed effects are discussed. It is believed that established peculiarities of bismuth embedding into employed TiO2 hosts are mostly the sequence of pleomorphic origin for the formed "bismuth-oxygen" chemical bonding., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, accepted in Appl. Amorphous a-SiO2 host-matrices were implanted with Sn-ions with and without posterior thermal tempering at 900 {\deg}C for 1 hour in ambient air. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis (XPS core-levels, XPS valence band mapping), photoluminescence (PL) probing, and density functional calculations (DFT) were employed to enable a detailed electronic structure characterization of these samples. It was experimentally established that the process of Sn-embedding into the a-SiO2 host occurs following two dissimilar trends: the Sn4+ -> Si4+ substitution in a-SiO2:Sn (without tempering), and Sn-metal clustering as interstitials in a-SiO2:Sn (900 {\deg}C, 1 hour). Both trends were modeled using calculated formation energies and partial densities of states (PDOS) as well as valence band (VB) simulations, which yielded evidence that substitutional defect generation occurs with the help of ion-implantation stimulated translocation of the host-atoms from their stoichiometric positions to the interstitial void. Experimental and theoretical data obtained coincide in terms of the reported Sn-loss effect in a-SiO2:Sn (900 {\deg}C, 1 hour) due to thermally-induced electronic host-structure re-arraignment, which manifests as backward host-atoms translocation into stoichiometric positions and the posterior formation of Sn-metal clusters., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, accepted to Appl. The results of XPS core-level and valence band measurements, photoluminescence spectra of a-SiO2 implanted by Zn-ions (E=30 keV, D=1*1017 cm^-2) and Density Functional Theory calculations of electronic structure as well as formation energies of structural defects in silica glass induced by Zn-ion implantation are presented. Both theory and experiment show that it is energetically more favorable for implanted zinc ions to occupy the interstitial positions instead of cation substitution. As a result, the Zn-ions embedded to interstitials, form chemical bonds with the surrounding oxygen atoms, formation ZnO-like nanoparticles and oxygen-deficient SiOx matrix. The subsequent thermal annealing at 900 0C (1 hr) strongly reduces the amount of ZnO nanoparticles and induces the formation of {\alpha}-Zn2SiO4 phase which markedly enhances the green emission., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, accepted to J. The results of density functional theory calculations and measurements using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of Co-nanoparticles dispersed on graphene/Cu are presented. It is found that for low cobalt thickness (0.02 nm - 0.06 nm) the Co forms islands distributed non-homogeneously which are strongly oxidized under exposure to air to form cobalt oxides. At greater thicknesses up to 2 nm the upper Co-layers are similarly oxidized whereas the lower layers contacting the graphene remain metallic. The measurements indicate a Co2+ oxidation state with no evidence of a 3+ state appearing at any Co thickness, consistent with CoO and Co[OH]2. Systematic investigation of atomic structure of N-ion implanted TiO2 (thin films and bulk ceramics) was performed by XPS measurements (core levels and valence bands) and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In bulk samples experiment and theory demonstrate anion N->O substitution. For the thin films case experiments evidence valuable contributions from N2 and NO molecule-like structures and theoretical modeling reveals a possibility of formation of these species as result of the appearance of interstitial nitrogen defects on the various surfaces of TiO2. This is the abstract. The results of measurements of X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of a-SiO2-host material after pulsed implantation with [Mn+] and [Co+, Mn+]-ions as well as DFT-calculations are presented. The low-energy shift is found in XPS Si 2p and O 1s core-levels of single [Mn+] and dual [Co+, Mn+] pulsed ion-implanted a-SiO2 (E = 30 keV, D = 2*10^17 cm^-2) with respect to those of untreated a-SiO2.The similar changes are found in XPS Si 2p and O 1s of stishovite compared to those of quartz. This means that the pulsed ion-implantation induces the local high pressure effect which leads to an appearance of SiO6-structural units in alpha-SiO2 host, forming "stishovite-like" local atomic structure. This process can be described within electronic bonding transition from the four-fold "quartz-like" to six-fold "stishovite-like" high-pressure phase in SiO2 host-matrix. It is found that such octahedral conversion depends on the fluence and starts with doses higher than D = 3*10^16 cm^-2., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted in phys. stat. solidi (b)

Bulk and thin films ZnO and TiO2 samples were doped with Sn by pulsed ion implantation and studied by means of X-ray photoelectron core-level and valence band spectroscopy as well as density functional theory calculations for comprehensive study of the incorporation of Sn. XPS spectral analysis showed that isovalent Sn cation substitution occurs in both zinc oxide (Sn2+ -> Zn2+) and titanium dioxide (Sn4+ -> Ti4+) for bulk and film morphologies. For TiO2 films, the implantation also led to occupation of interstitials by doped ions, which induced the clustering of substituted and embedded Sn atoms; this did not occur in ZnO:Sn film samples. Density functional theory (DFT) formation energies were calculated of various incorporation processes, explaining the prevalence of substitutional defects in both matrices. We perform a systematic first-principles study of phosphorene in the presence of typical monovalent (hydrogen, fluorine) and divalent (oxygen) impurities. The results of our modeling suggest a decomposition of phosphorene into weakly bonded one-dimensional (1D) chains upon single- and double-side hydrogenation and fluorination. In spite of a sizable quasiparticle band gap (2.29 eV), fully hydrogenated phosphorene found to be dynamically unstable. In contrast, full fluorination of phosphorene gives rise to a stable structure, being an indirect gap semiconductor with the band gap of 2.27 eV. We also show that fluorination of phosphorene from the gas phase is significantly more likely than hydrogenation due to the relatively low energy barrier for the dissociative adsorption of F2 (0.19 eV) compared to H2 (2.54 eV). At low concentrations, monovalent impurities tend to form regular atomic rows phosphorene, though such patterns do not seem to be easily achievable due to high migration barriers (1.09 and 2.81 eV for H2 and F2, respectively). Oxidation of phosphorene is shown to be a qualitatively different process. First-principles calculations of the effect of carbon coverage on the atomic, electronic and magnetic structure of nickel and iron substrates demonstrate insignificant changes in the interatomic distances and magnetic moments on the atoms of the metallic substrates. The coverage of the iron surface by mono- and few-layer graphene induces significant changes in the orbital occupancies and exchange interactions between the layers in contrast to the case of a nickel substrate for which changes in the orbital ordering and exchange interactions are much smaller. The results of XPS measurements (core levels and valence bands) of P+, Ca+, P+Ca+ and Ca+P+ ion implanted (E=30 keV, D=1x1017 cm-2) commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrates formation of various structural defects in titanium dioxide films formed on the surface of implanted materials. We have found that for double implantation (Ti:P+,Ca+ and Ti:Ca+,P+) the outermost surface layer formed mainly by Ca and P, respectively, i.e. the implantation sequence is very important. The DFT calculations show that under P+ and Ca+P+ ion implantation the formation energies for both cation (P-Ti) and anion (P-O) substitutions are comparable which can induce the creation of [PO4]3- and Ti-P species. For Ca+ and P+Ca+-ion implantation the calculated formation energies correspond to Ca2+-Ti4+ cation substitution. This conclusion is in agreement with XPS Ca 2p and Ti 2p core levels and valence band measurements and DFT calculations of electronic structure of related compounds. Based on density functional calculations, we demonstrate a significant difference in oxidation patterns between graphene and graphite and the formation of defects after oxidation. Step-by-step modeling demonstrates that oxidation of 80% of the graphite surface is favorable. Oxidation above half of the graphite surface significantly decreases the energy costs of vacancy formation with CO2 production. The presence of water is crucial in the transformation of epoxy groups to hydroxyl, the intercalation with further bundle and exfoliation. In water-rich conditions, water intercalates graphite at the initial stages of oxidation and oxidation, which is similar to the oxidation process of free-standing graphene; in contrast, in water-free conditions, large molecules intercalate graphite only after oxidation occurs on more than half of the surface., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted to J. Graphene is impermeable to all gases and liquids, and even such a small atom as hydrogen is not expected to penetrate through graphene's dense electronic cloud within billions of years. Here we show that monolayers of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are unexpectedly permeable to thermal protons, hydrogen ions under ambient conditions. As a reference, no proton transport could be detected for a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide, bilayer graphene or multilayer hBN. At room temperature, monolayer hBN exhibits the highest proton conductivity with a low activation energy of about 0.3 eV but graphene becomes a better conductor at elevated temperatures such that its resistivity to proton flow is estimated to fall below 10^-3 Ohm per cm2 above 250 C. The proton barriers can be further reduced by decorating monolayers with catalytic nanoparticles. By studying Fe-doped ZnO pellets and thin films with various x-ray spectroscopic techniques, and complementing this with density functional theory calculations, we find that Fe-doping in bulk ZnO induces isovalent (and isostructural) cation substitution (Fe2+ -> Zn2+). In contrast to this, Fe-doping near the surface produces both isovalent and heterovalent substitution (Fe3+ -> Zn2+). The calculations performed herein suggest that the most likely defect structure is the single or double substitution of Zn with Fe, although, if additional oxygen is available, then Fe substitution with interstitial oxygen is even more energetically favourable. Furthermore, it is found that ferromagnetic states are energetically unfavourable, and ferromagnetic ordering is likely to be realized only through the formation of a secondary phase (i.e. ZnFe2O4), or codoping with Cu., Comment: 29+ pages, 8 figures, 1 table. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) measurements of pellet and thin film forms of TiO$_2$ with implanted Fe ions are presented and discussed. The findings indicate that Fe-implantation in a TiO$_2$ pellet sample induces heterovalent cation substitution (Fe$^{2+}\rightarrow$ Ti$^{4+}$) beneath the surface region. But in thin film samples, the clustering of Fe atoms is primarily detected. In addition to this, significant amounts of secondary phases of Fe$^{3+}$ are detected on the surface of all doped samples due to oxygen exposure. These experimental findings are compared with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of formation energies for different configurations of structural defects in the implanted TiO$_2$:Fe system. According to our calculations, the clustering of Fe-atoms in TiO$_2$:Fe thin films can be attributed to the formation of combined substitutional and interstitial defects. Cobalt and silver co-doping has been undertaken in ZnO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition in order to investigate the ferromagnetic properties in ZnO-based diluted magnetic materials and to understand the eventual relation between ferromagnetism and charge carriers. Hall transport measurements reveal that Ag doping up to 5% leads to a progressive compensation of the native n-type carriers. The magnetization curves show ferromagnetic contributions for all samples at both 5 K and room temperature, decreasing with increasing the Ag concentration. First principles modeling of the possible configurations of Co-Ag defects suggest the formation of nano-clusters around interstitial Co impurity as the origin of the ferromagnetism. The electronic structure of carbon shells of carbon encapsulated iron nanoparticles carbon encapsulated Fe@C has been studied by X-ray resonant emission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The recorded spectra have been compared to the density functional calculations of the electronic structure of graphene. It has been shown that an Fe@C carbon shell can be represented in the form of several graphene layers with Stone-Wales defects. The production of multiple types of graphene, such as free standing, epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide and metals, graphene in solution, chemically grown graphene-like molecules, various graphene nanoribbons, and graphene oxide with different levels of reduction and various chemical composition, demonstrate the need for additional investigation beyond the basic principles of graphene functionalization for avoidance of occasionally contradictions between the predictions from first-principles simulations and experimental results. Herein, we discuss the current state of modeling of the different types of graphene using density functional theory (DFT) methods. We focus on the static (substrate, shape, curvature, strain and doping) and dynamic (starting point of functionalization, migration barriers and stability of configurations) aspects that provide a more correct and selective modeling of the chemisorption of various chemical species on the graphene scaffold. Based on the recent modeling of experimentally realized functionalization of different types of graphene we can conclude that the formation of uniform one- or two-sided functionalized graphene discussed in earlier studies is an exception to the typical scenarios of graphene chemistry. The presence of different substrates, defects and lattice distortions, such as ripples and strain, results in the formation of clusters or lines from the functional groups. Several configurations of the chemical species on the graphene substrate have been found to exist with ideal models but are only stable for graphene functionalized under special conditions. The role of the technical parameters, such as the functionals and computational methods employed, and the important guidelines for the modeling of the chemical properties of various types of graphene are also discussed., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, mini-review to appear in RSC Advances

Monolayer graphene was deposited on a Si wafer substrate decorated with SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and then exposed to aryl radicals that were generated in situ from their diazonium precursors. Using micro-Raman mapping, the aryl radicals were found to selectively react with the regions of graphene that covered the NPs. Based on combination of experimental measurements and first-principles calculations we report a novel carbon-based catalytic material and describe significant acceleration of the hydrogenation of magnesium at room temperature in presence of nickel nanoparticles wrapped in multilayer graphene. Increase of the rate of magnesium hydrogenation in contrast to the mix of graphite and nickel nanoparticles evidences intrinsic catalytic properties of explored nanocomposites. Results of simulations demonstrate that the doping from metal substrate and the presence of Stone-Wales defects turn multilayer graphene from chemically inert to chemically active mode. The electronic structures of Sn and Pb implanted SiO2 are studied using soft X-ray absorption (XAS) and emission (XES) spectroscopy. We show, using reference compounds and ab initio calculations, that the presence of Pb-O and Sn-O interactions can be detected in the pre-edge region of the oxygen K-edge XAS. Via analysis of this interaction-sensitive pre-edge region, we find that Pb implantation results primarily in the clustering of Pb atoms. Conversely, with Sn implantation using identical conditions, strong Sn-O interactions are present, showing that Sn is coordinated with oxygen. The varying results between the two ion types are explained using both ballistic considerations and density functional theory calculations. We find that the substitution of Pb into Si sites in SiO2 requires much more energy than substituting Sn in these same sites, primarily due to the larger size of the Pb ions. From these calculated formation energies it is evident that Pb requires far higher temperatures than Sn to be soluble in SiO2. Effects of doping on morphology of iron carbide (cementite) nanowires have been explored by first principle electronic structure calculations. We examined the role of several realistic impurities (Si, Mn, V, P and S) in the formation energies of the cementite nanowires with different sizes and morphologies. It is shown that the presence of the impurities decreases the formation energy and can switch the preferable axis of the cementite nanowire growth. Theoretical studies of penetration of various alkali atoms (Li, Na, Rb, Cs) throughout graphene membrane grown on silicon carbide substrate are reported and compared with recent experimental results. Results of first principles modeling demonstrate rather low (about 0.8 eV) energy barrier for the formation of temporary defects in carbon layer required for the penetration of Li at high concentration of adatoms, higher (about 2 eV) barrier for Na, and barriers above 4 eV for Rb and Cs. Experiments prove migration of lithium adatoms from graphene surface to the buffer layer and SiC substrate at room temperature, sodium at 100{\deg}C and impenetrability of graphene membrane for Rb and Cs. Electronic structure of nickel nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon was characterized by photoelectron, X-ray absorption, and X-ray emission spectroscopies. Experimental spectra are compared with the density of states calculated in the frame of the density functional theory. The carbon shell of Ni nanoparticles has been found to be multilayer graphene with significant (about 6%) amount of Stone--Wales defects. Results of the experiments evidence protection of the metallic nanoparticles from the environmental degradation by providing a barrier against oxidation at least for two years. Density functional theory modelling of the reduction of realistic nanographene molecules (C42H18, C48H18 and C60H24) by molecular hydrogen evidences for the presence of limits in the hydrogenation process. These limits caused the contentions between three-fold symmetry of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules and two-fold symmetry of adsorbed hydrogen pairs. Both experimental and theoretical studies of the magnetic properties of micrographite and nanographite indicate a crucial role of the partial oxidation of graphitic zigzag edges in ferromagnetism. In contrast to total and partial hydrogenation, the oxidation of half of the carbon atoms on the graphite edges transforms the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between graphite planes and over graphite ribbons to the ferromagnetic interaction. Motivated by recent experimental data (Sepioni, M. et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2010, 105, 207205), we have studied the possibility of forming magnetic clusters with spin S> 1/2 on graphene by adsorption of hydrogen atoms or hydroxyl groups. Migration of hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl groups on the surface of graphene during the delamination of HOPG led to the formation of seven-atom or seven-OH-group clusters with S=5/2 that were of a special interest. The coincidence of symmetry of the clusters with the graphene lattice strengthens the stability of the cluster. For (OH)7 clusters that were situated greater than 3 nm from one another, the reconstruction barrier to a nonmagnetic configuration was approximately 0.4 eV, whereas for H7 clusters, there was no barrier and the high-spin state was unstable. Stability of the high-spin clusters increased if they were formed on top of ripples. Exchange interactions between the clusters were studied and we have shown that the ferromagnetic state is improbable. A new model for graphene, epitaxially grown on silicon carbide is proposed. Density functional theory modelling of epitaxial graphene functionalization by hydrogen, fluorine and phenyl groups has been performed with hydrogen and fluorine showing a high probability of cluster formation in high adatom concentration. It has also been shown that the clusterization of fluorine adatoms provides midgap states in formation due to significant flat distortion of graphene. The functionalization of epitaxial graphene using larger species (methyl and phenyl groups) renders cluster formation impossible, due to the steric effect and results in uniform coverage with the energy gap opening., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Nanotechnology
