Mangrove‐dominated coastlines have high carbon sequestration capacity, but it remains unclear whether tidally outwelled carbon is transformed within the coastal ocean or exported offshore. Here, we used radium isotopes (224Ra and 223Ra) to investigate carbon outwelling in two mangrove seascapes in Brazil across multiple spatial scales. We sampled porewaters to define the source composition, mangrove creek waters to resolve tidal cycles, and cross‐shelf transects to trace outwelling in coastal seascapes. Radium isotopes were positively correlated with dissolved inorganic (DIC), organic (DOC) and particulate organic (POC) carbon across the seascapes. DIC was the primary form of carbon (mean ± SD), representing 85% of the total carbon pool as bicarbonate (75 ± 11%), carbonate (6 ± 5%), and CO2 (4 ± 9%). DOC and POC accounted for 10 ± 6% and 5 ± 6% of total carbon, respectively. Although mangrove waters emitted CO2 to the atmosphere (38–143 mmol m−2 d−1), both bays and continental shelves were a CO2 sink (−2.5 to −0.5 mmol m−2 d−1) associated to chlorophyll‐a enrichments (r2 = 0.86). Total carbon outwelled from mangroves were 3–4 times higher than soil carbon burial at both mangrove sites. Bicarbonate export (27–72 mmol m−2 d−1) to the continental shelf was the major fate of carbon outwelling, more than doubling the perceived capacity of mangrove soil to sequester carbon. Hence, disregarding outwelling as a blue carbon sink mechanism would lead to underestimated assessments of how mangroves capture CO2 and help to mitigate climate change. Plain Language Summary: Mangrove forests effectively store large amounts of carbon within their muddy soils due to their complex root systems, high sedimentation rates, and high productivity. Mangroves also play a crucial role in exporting carbon to the ocean through tidal flushing and climate change mitigation. Here, we measured overlooked lateral carbon fluxes using geochemical tracers. Our findings demonstrated that mangroves could sequester 3–4 times more CO2 if total carbon exports to ocean are accounted in addition to soil carbon burial. Most of the carbon is exported as bicarbonate, with the potential to remain in seawater for millennia. We argue that a fraction of mangrove carbon is not lost during transport offshore, but rather stored in the ocean, the largest global carbon reservoir. Etheria elliptica is a freshwater oyster that produces an adhesive that hardens underwater, allowing them to attach to other oysters, rocks, wood, and other natural substrates, producing complex oyster bed communities. Despite the importance of the adhesive in oyster bed formation, little is known about its chemical composition, structure, or mechanical properties. Through a combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x‐ray photoemission electron microscopy (X‐PEEM), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, microhardness testing, and nanoindentation, it is found that the oyster adhesive consists entirely of aragonite nanoparticles that clump together into crystallites of varied shape, size, and orientation. The crystallite clumping density varies from the exterior of the adhesive to the interior, with the adhesive closest to the prismatic layer generally being denser. With this variation in density comes a variation in material properties with the exterior adhesive layer being softer and more flexible and the interior adhesive layer being harder and less elastic, or more similar to the prismatic and nacre shell structures produced by the E. elliptica. We report, in 15 Ecuadorian mountainous lakes, dissolved concentrations of CO2, CH4, and N2O and a suite of ancillary biogeochemical variables (dissolved inorganic nutrients, oxygen, major cations, dissolved and particulate organic carbon, and the stable isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon and water). The sampled lakes were located in the páramos of Salve Facha and Antisana y Mojanda (northern region of Ecuadorian Andes), along an elevational gradient from 2213 to 4361 m above sea level, as well as a gradient of lake surface area (0.003–6.1 km2) and depth (1–74 m). Most lakes were characterized by lower values of the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) (644–2152 ppm) than usually attributed to tropical lakes (~ 1900 ppm). Three lakes influenced by volcanic inputs were characterized by the highest pCO2 values (3269–10,069 ppm), while two lakes bordered by large cities were characterized by the lowest pCO2 values (208–254 ppm). Dissolved CH4 concentrations ranged between 170 and 24,908 nmol/L and were negatively correlated to lake area and depth. N2O saturation levels ranged between 64% and 101%. The surface waters were undersaturated in N2O with respect to atmospheric equilibrium, probably due to inputs of soil–water with low N2O levels owing to denitrification in soils. The data obtained in the sampled highland lakes was combined with published data from lowland lakes (elevation < 500 m, n = 17 for CO2 and n = 16 for CH4) to derive relations between CO2 and CH4 and lake surface area, allowing to compute CO2 and CH4 lacustrine emissions at the scale of the Amazon basin using the HydroLAKES spatial data set. The CO2 and CH4 emissions from highland lakes (elevation > 500 m) only represented 0.4% and 2% of the total lacustrine emissions at the scale of the Amazon basin, respectively. Total CO2 and CH4 emissions from lakes represented a small fraction (8.6%) of total lentic and lotic CO2 and CH4 emissions at the scale of the Amazon basin. The lake and river emissions of CH4 represented ~ 3% of total CH4 emissions from all compartments of the Amazon basin, mainly attributable to wetlands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON), and phosphorus (DOP) are used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool and are important components of biogeochemical cycling in the coastal ocean. Here, we present the first edition of a global database (CoastDOM v1 ; available at https://figshare.com/s/512289eb43c4f8e8eaef) compiling previously published and unpublished measurements of DOC, DON, and DOP collected in coastal waters. These data are complemented by hydrographic data such as temperature and salinity and, to the extent possible, other biogeochemical variables (e.g., Chlorophyll-a, inorganic nutrients) and the inorganic carbon system (e.g., dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity). Overall, CoastDOM v1 includes observations from all continents however, most data were collected in the Northern Hemisphere, with a clear gap in coastal water DOM measurements from the Southern Hemisphere. The data included were collected from 1978 to 2022 and consist of 62339 data points for DOC, 20360 for DON and 13440 for DOP. The number of measurements decreases progressively in the sequence DOC > DON > DOP, reflecting both differences in the maturity of the analytical methods and the greater focus on carbon cycling by the aquatic science community. The global database shows that the average DOC concentration in coastal waters (average (standard deviation; SD): 182 (314) µmol C L-1; median: 103 µmol C L-1), is 13-fold greater than the average coastal DON concentrations (average (SD): 13.6 (30.4) µmol N L-1; median: 8.0 µmol N L-1), which was itself 39-fold greater than the average coastal DOP concentrations (average (SD): 0.34 ± 1.11 µmol P L-1; median: 0.18 µmol P L-1). This dataset will be useful to identify global spatial and temporal patterns in DOM and to facilitate reuse of DOC, DON and DOP data in studies aimed at better characterising local biogeochemical processes, closing nutrient budgets, estimating carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous pools, as well as identifying a baseline for modelling future changes in coastal waters.
