Boudriga Keywords: Intrusion detection; Incident response; Multi-attribute decision theory Abstract: This paper presents a multi-attribute decisional framework for computer network intrusion detection. First, a cost model that allows to estimate accurately the damage resulting from a security incident is described. Then, a multi-attribute optimization algorithm is applied to select the optimal decision based on alternatives to remedy such incidents. The major interest is that the proposed approach can be applied in collaborative reactive intrusion detection where human experts are assisted by automated tools to find the best response. The approach would allow the possibility to assess the performance of the whole system depending on the performance of each constituents' leading to a definition of optimality conditions on the introduced framework. The major issues occurring in these new types of systems are: (a) the continuity of environment monitoring, (b) the mobility management of sensors, (c) the ad-hoc communication scheme, and (d) the security of sensitive messages. This paper develops an ad-hoc architecture and communication and mobility schemes to provide an efficient monitoring system in an environment where targets have unpredicted motion. It also discusses a security solution. A numerical simulation is provided for the validation of our schemes. A specification model of data types for software package development is presented. The suggested model incorporates a binary relation for data type specification and a semantic definition of specifications using standard least fixpoint theory. The specification of a library data base problem is also presented as an illustrative example of a complex data type. Specifications generation and validation problems are also suggested as follow-up research topics.
