Abstract

This paper presents a genetic algorithm approach for the synthesis of planar three degree-of-freedom parallel manipulators. A genetic algorithm is an optimization method inspired by natural evolution. As in nature, the fittest members of a population are given better chances of reproducing and transmitting part of their genetic heritage to the next generation. This leads to stronger and stronger generations which evolve towards the solution of the problem. For the applications studied here, the individuals in the population consist of the architectural parameters of the manipulators. The algorithm optimizes these parameters to obtain a workspace as close as possible to a prescribed working area. For each individual of the population, the geometric description of the workspace can be obtained. The algorithm then determines the intersection between the prescribed workspace and the actual workspace, and minimizes the area of the regions that do not intersect. The method is applied to two planar three-degree-of-freedom parallel manipulators, one with prismatic joints and one with revolute joints.

Abstract

© 2018 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research Studies examining the relationship between muscle parameters and bone strength have not included multiple muscle measurements and/or both central and peripheral skeletal parameters. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between lean mass, muscle strength and power, and skeletal size, bone density, and bone strength. We studied the association between appendicular lean mass (ALM), grip strength, and leg power, and central quantitative computed tomography (QCT) parameters in 2857 men aged 65 years or older; peripheral QCT was available on a subset (n = 786). ALM, grip strength, and leg power were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), Jamar dynamometer, and the Nottingham Power Rig, respectively. Multivariable models adjusting for potential confounders including age, race, study site, BMI, and muscle measurements were developed and least squares means were generated from linear regression models. For the multivariable model, percent differences of bone parameters between lowest (Q1) and highest quartiles (Q4) of ALM, grip strength, and leg power were reported. ALM was significantly associated with central and peripheral QCT parameters: percent higher values (Q4 versus Q1) ranging from 3.3% (cortical volumetric bone mineral density [vBMD] of the femoral neck) to 31% (vertebral strength index of the spine). Grip strength was only significantly associated with radial parameters: percent higher values (Q4 versus Q1) ranging from 2.5% (periosteal circumference) to 7.5% (33% axial strength index [SSIx]). Leg power was associated with vertebral strength and lower cross-sectional area with percent lower values (Q4 versus Q1) of –11.9% and –2.7%, respectively. In older men, stronger associations were observed for ALM compared to muscle strength and power. Longitudinal studies are needed to examine the relationship between independent changes in muscle measurements and skeletal size, density and strength. © 2018 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

50. Longitudinal Systolic Blood Pressure Characteristics and Integrity of White Matter Tracts in a Cohort of Very Old Black and White Adults

Abstract

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine which systolic blood pressure (SBP) characteristics are associated with reduced brain integrity and whether these associations are stronger for white or gray matter. We hypothesized that exposure to higher and variable SBP will be associated with lower structural integrity of both gray and white matter. METHODS: Neuroimaging, SBP, and cognition were obtained in 311 community-dwelling adults in 2006-2008 (average age = 83 years; 58% women; 40% black). Antihypertensive medications, SBP, and health-related factors were collected from 1997 to 1998 to time of neuroimaging. SBP values obtained from 1997 to 1998 to time of neuroimaging were used to compute mean; pulse pressure; coefficient of variation; and peak, load, and group-based trajectories. RESULTS: Higher mean SBP was associated with lower white matter integrity in uncinate and superior lateral fasciculi bilaterally, independent of age, stroke history, antihypertensive medication use (odds ratio of having white matter hyperintensities greater than or equal to the median for 10mm Hg of SBP = 10.4, 95% confidence interval = 10.2-10.6, P = 0.0001; standardized beta for fractional anisotropy = -13.54, SE = 4.58, P = 0.003). These neuroimaging markers attenuated the association between higher SBP and lower digit symbol substitution test. Results were similar for trajectories of SBP and stronger for those with previously higher and variable SBP even if SBP was normal at neuroimaging. Results were similar for those without stroke. Associations with gray matter measures were not significant. CONCLUSIONS: If confirmed, these data suggest a history of higher and variable SBP for very old adults may be useful to alert clinicians to potential lower integrity in selected tracts, whereas cross-sectional SBP measurements may obscure the risk of underlying white matter hyperintensities.
