We discuss the need for very large detection planes for the detection of hard X-ray transients in the multi-messenger era that started with the quasi-simultaneous detection of GRB~170817A by \textit{Fermi}/GBM and \textit{INTEGRAL}/SPI on one hand and the gravitational waves event GW 170817, detected by the LVC collaboration, on the other hand. Then, we present a brief survey of current and future instruments and their expected sensitivity, pointing the fact that the gain in the number of GRBs is achieved by future projects thanks to their larger field of view rather than to their larger effective area. Based on our experience with \textit{SVOM}/ECLAIRs, we then address various problems associated with the realization of very large detection planes (\mbox{$\ge 1 \mathrm m^{2}$}), and we demonstrate that CdTe detectors are well suited for this task. We conclude with a discussion of some key parameters that must be taken into account in the realization of instruments based on these detectors. We hope that this paper will motivate the elaboration of detailed proposals of large area wide-field hard X-ray monitors that will be crucially needed in the next decade., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

To take advantage of the astrophysical potential of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), Chinese and French astrophysicists have engaged the SVOM mission (Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor). Major advances in GRB studies resulting from the synergy between space and ground observations, the SVOM mission implements space and ground instrumentation. The scientific objectives of the mission put a special emphasis on two categories of GRBs: very distant GRBs at z$>$5 which constitute exceptional cosmological probes, and faint/soft nearby GRBs which allow probing the nature of the progenitors and the physics at work in the explosion. These goals have a major impact on the design of the mission: the on-board hard X-ray imager is sensitive down to 4 keV and computes on line image and rate triggers, and the follow-up telescopes on the ground are sensitive in the NIR. At the beginning of the next decade, SVOM will be the main provider of GRB positions and spectral parameters on very short time scale. The SVOM instruments will operate simultaneously with a wide range of powerful astronomical devices. This rare instrumental conjunction, combined with the relevance of the scientific topics connected with GRB studies, warrants a remarkable scientific return for SVOM. In addition, the SVOM instrumentation, primarily designed for GRB studies, composes a unique multi-wavelength observatory with rapid slew capability that will find multiple applications for the whole astronomy community beyond the specific objectives linked to GRBs. This report lists the scientific themes that will benefit from observations made with SVOM, whether they are specific GRB topics, or more generally all the issues that can take advantage of the multi-wavelength capabilities of SVOM., Comment: 67 pages, 1 frontispiece, 21 figures. We present the updated INTEGRAL catalogue of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed between December 2002 and February 2012. The catalogue contains the spectral parameters for 59 GRBs localized by the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System (IBAS). We used the data from the two main instruments on board the INTEGRAL satellite: the spectrometer SPI (SPectrometer on INTEGRAL) nominally covering the energy range 18 keV - 8 MeV, and the imager IBIS (the Imager on Board the INTEGRAL Satellite) operating in the range from 15 keV to 10 MeV. For the spectral analysis we applied a new data extraction technique, developed in order to explore the energy regions of highest sensitivity for both instruments, SPI and IBIS. It allowed us to perform analysis of the GRB spectra over a broad energy range and to determine the bursts' spectral peak energies. The spectral analysis was performed on the whole sample of GRBs triggered by IBAS, including all the events observed in period December 2002 - February 2012. The catalogue contains the trigger times, burst coordinates, positional errors, durations and peak fluxes for 28 unpublished GRBs observed between September 2008 and February 2012. The light curves in 20 - 200 keV energy band of these events were derived using IBIS data. The INTEGRAL/SPI, X-gamma-ray spectrometer (20 keV - 8 MeV) is an instrument for which recovering source intensity variations is not straightforward and can constitute a difficulty for data analysis. In most cases, determining the source intensity changes between exposures is largely based on a priori information. We propose techniques that help to overcome the difficulty related to source intensity variations, which make this step more rational. In addition, the constructed "synthetic" light curves should permit us to obtain a sky model that describes the data better and optimizes the source signal-to-noise ratios. For this purpose, the time intensity variation of each source was modeled as a combination of piecewise segments of time during which a given source exhibits a constant intensity. To optimize the signal-to-noise ratios, the number of segments was minimized. We present a first method that takes advantage of previous time series that can be obtained from another instrument on-board the INTEGRAL observatory. A data segmentation algorithm was then used to synthesize the time series into segments. The second method no longer needs external light curves, but solely SPI raw data. For this, we developed a specific algorithm that involves the SPI transfer function. The time segmentation algorithms that were developed solve a difficulty inherent to the SPI instrument, which is the intensity variations of sources between exposures, and it allows us to obtain more information about the sources' behavior., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures. Nowadays, analyzing and reducing the ever larger astronomical datasets is becoming a crucial challenge, especially for long cumulated observation times. The INTEGRAL/SPI X-gamma-ray spectrometer is an instrument for which it is essential to process many exposures at the same time in order to increase the low signal-to-noise ratio of the weakest sources. In this context, the conventional methods for data reduction are inefficient and sometimes not feasible at all. Processing several years of data simultaneously requires computing not only the solution of a large system of equations, but also the associated uncertainties. We aim at reducing the computation time and the memory usage. Since the SPI transfer function is sparse, we have used some popular methods for the solution of large sparse linear systems; we briefly review these methods. We use the Multifrontal Massively Parallel Solver (MUMPS) to compute the solution of the system of equations. We also need to compute the variance of the solution, which amounts to computing selected entries of the inverse of the sparse matrix corresponding to our linear system. This can be achieved through one of the latest features of the MUMPS software that has been partly motivated by this work. In this paper we provide a brief presentation of this feature and evaluate its effectiveness on astrophysical problems requiring the processing of large datasets simultaneously, such as the study of the entire emission of the Galaxy. We used these algorithms to solve the large sparse systems arising from SPI data processing and to obtain both their solutions and the associated variances. In conclusion, thanks to these newly developed tools, processing large datasets arising from SPI is now feasible with both a reasonable execution time and a low memory usage., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

The microquasar 1E 1740.7-2942 is observed with Integral since Spring 2003. Here, we report on the source high energy behaviour by using the first three years of data collected with SPI and IBIS telescopes, taking advantage of the instruments complementarity. Light curves analysis showed two main states for 1E 1740.7-2942: the canonical low/hard state of black-hole candidates and a ``dim'' state, characterised by a ~ 20 times fainter emission, detected only below 50 keV and when summing more than 1Ms of data. For the first time the continuum of the low/hard state has been measured up to ~ 600 keV with a spectrum that is well represented by a thermal Comptonization plus an additional component necessary to fit the data above 200 keV. This high energy component could be related to non-thermal processes as already observed in other black-hole candidates. Alternatively, we show that a model composed by two thermal Comptonizations provides an equally representative description of the data: the temperature of the first population of electrons results as (kTe)_1 ~ 30 keV while the second, (kTe)_2, is fixed at 100 keV. Finally, searching for 511 keV line showed no feature, either narrow or broad, transient or persistent., Comment: accepted in Astrophysical Journal Part 1; 3 figures

We have processed the data accumulated with INTEGRAL SPI during 4 years (~ 51 Ms) to study the Galactic ``diffuse'' emission morphology in the 20 keV to 8 MeV energy range. To achieve this objective, we have derived simultaneously an all-sky census of emitting sources and images of the Galactic Ridge (GR) emission. In the central radian, the resolved point source emission amounts to 88%, 91% and 68% of the total emission in the 25-50, 50-100 and 100-300 keV domains respectively. We have compared the GR emission spatial distribution to those obtained from CO and NIR maps, and quantified our results through latitude and longitude profiles. Below 50 keV, the SPI data are better traced by the latter, supporting a stellar origin for this emission. Furthermore, we found that the GR emission spectrum follows a power law with a photon index ~ 1.55 above 50 keV while an additional component is required below this energy. This component shows a cutoff around 30 keV, reinforcing a stellar origin, as proposed by Krivonos et al. (2007). The annihilation diffuse emission component is extracted simultaneously, leading to the determination of the related parameters (positronium flux and fraction). A specific discussion is devoted to the annihilation line distribution since a significant emission is detected over a region as large as ~80 degrees by ~10 degrees potentially associated with the disk or halo surrounding the central regions of our Galaxy., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures. We study the spectrum of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) in energy range $\sim$5-100 keV. Early in 2006 the INTEGRAL observatory performed a series of four 30ksec observations with the Earth disk crossing the field of view of the instruments. The modulation of the aperture flux due to occultation of extragalactic objects by the Earth disk was used to obtain the spectrum of the Cosmic X-ray Background(CXB). Various sources of contamination were evaluated, including compact sources, Galactic Ridge emission, CXB reflection by the Earth atmosphere, cosmic ray induced emission by the Earth atmosphere and the Earth auroral emission. The spectrum of the cosmic X-ray background in the energy band 5-100 keV is obtained. The shape of the spectrum is consistent with that obtained previously by the HEAO-1 observatory, while the normalization is $\sim$10% higher. This difference in normalization can (at least partly) be traced to the different assumptions on the absolute flux from the Crab Nebulae. The increase relative to the earlier adopted value of the absolute flux of the CXB near the energy of maximum luminosity (20-50 keV) has direct implications for the energy release of supermassive black holes in the Universe and their growth at the epoch of the CXB origin., Comment: A&A, 14 pages, 12 figues

The INTEGRAL observatory has been performing a deep survey of the Galactic central radian since 2003, with the goal of both extracting a catalog of sources and gaining insight into the Galactic diffuse emission. This paper concentrates on the estimation of the total point sources emission contribution. It is now clear that unresolved point sources contribute to the observed diffuse emission; the increasing sensitivity of instruments with time has lead to a steady decrease in estimates of this ``diffuse emission''. We have analysed the first year data obtained with the spectrometer and imager SPI on board INTEGRAL. First, a catalog of 63 hard X-ray sources detected, time-averaged, during our 2003 Galactic plane survey, is derived. Second, after extracting the spectra of the sources detected by SPI, their combined contribution is compared to the total (resolved and unresolved) emission from the Galactic ridge. The data analysis is complex: it requires us to split the total emission into several components, as discrete sources and diffuse emission are superimposed in SPI data. The main result is that point source emission dominates in the hard X-ray/soft $\gamma$-ray domain, and contributes around 90 % of the total emission around 100 keV, while above 250 keV, diffuse electron-positron annihilation, through its three-photon positronium continuum with a positronium fraction $\sim$ 0.97 and the 511 keV electron-positron line, dominates over the sources., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

The diffuse continuum emission from the Galactic plane in the energy range 18-1000 keV has been studied using 16 Ms of data from the SPI instrument on INTEGRAL. With such an exposure we can exploit the imaging properties of SPI to achieve a good separation of point sources from the various diffuse components. Using a candidate-source catalogue derived with IBIS on INTEGRAL and a number of sky distribution models we obtained spectra resolved in Galactic longitude. We can identify spectral components of a diffuse continuum of power law shape with index about 1.7, a positron annihilation component with a continuum from positronium and the line at 511 keV, and a second, roughly power-law component from detected point sources. Our analysis confirms the concentration of positron annihilation emission in the inner region (|l|<10), the disk (10<|l|<30) being at least a factor 7 weaker in this emission. The power-law component in contrast drops by only a factor 2, showing a quite different longitude distribution and spatial origin. Detectable sources constitute about 90% of the total Galactic emission between 20 and 60 keV, but have a steeper spectrum than the diffuse emission, their contribution to the total emission dropping rapidly to a small fraction at higher energies. In the SPI energy range the flux is lower than found by OSSE, probably due to the more complete accounting for sources by SPI. The power-law emission is difficult to explain as of interstellar origin, inverse Compton giving at most 10%, and instead a population of unresolved point sources is proposed as a possible origin, AXPs with their spectra hardening above 100 keV being plausible candidates. The brightest persistent Galactic black hole candidate close to the Galactic Centre, 1E 1740.7-2942, has long been observed with INTEGRAL. In this paper, we report on the long-term hard X-ray monitoring obtained during the first year of observations as part of the Galactic Centre Deep Exposure. We discuss the temporal and spectral behaviours in different energy bands up to 250 keV, as well as the hardness-flux correlations., Comment: 6 pages, 17 figures. The Crab region was observed several times by INTEGRAL for calibration purposes. This paper aims at underlining the systematic interactions between (i) observations of this reference source, (ii) in-flight calibration of the instrumental response and (iii) the development and validation of the analysis tools of the SPI spectrometer. It first describes the way the response is produced and how studies of the Crab spectrum lead to improvements and corrections in the initial response. Then, we present the tools which were developed to extract spectra from the SPI observation data and finally a Crab spectrum obtained with one of these methods, to show the agreement with previous experiments. INTEGRAL Spectrometer SPI data from the first year of the Galactic Centre Deep Exposure has been analysed for the diffuse continuum from the Galactic ridge. A new catalogue of sources from the INTEGRAL Imager IBIS has been used to account for their contribution to the celestial signal. Apparently diffuse emission is detected at a level ~10% of the total source flux. A comparison of the spectrum of diffuse emission with that from an analysis of IBIS data alone shows that they are consistent. During the Core Programme, INTEGRAL has surveyed a large portion of the sky (around 9000 square degrees); although INTEGRAL is not optimized for extra-galactic studies its observations have nevertheless given us the opportunity to explore the sky behind our Galaxy, something which is impossible in some wavebands due to the presence of strong absorption. Preliminary results from this exploration are presented and compared with the pre-launch expectations. In particular, we detail all extragalactic detections obtained so far: 10 active galaxies and one cluster of galaxies. Of these sources, many have previously been studied at energies above 10-20 keV while a few are new hard X-ray discoveries. Since the number of detections is smaller than estimated on the basis of the IBIS/ISGRI sensitivity, it is likely that some of the new ISGRI sources found in this survey are extragalactic objects; a few of these are likely to be AGN and are described in detail., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures. The SPI instrument has been launched on-board the INTEGRAL observatory on October 17, 2002. SPI is a spectrometer devoted to the sky observation in the 20 keV-8 MeV energy range using 19 germanium detectors. The performance of the cryogenic system is nominal and allows to cool the 19 kg of germanium down to 85 K with a comfortable margin. The energy resolution of the whole camera is 2.5 keV at 1.1 MeV. This resolution degrades with time due to particle irradiation in space. We show that the annealing process allows the recovery of the initial performance. The anticoincidence shield works as expected, with a low threshold at 75 keV, reducing the GeD background by a factor of 20. The digital front-end electronics system allows the perfect alignement in time of all the signals as well as the optimisation of the dead time (12%). We demonstrate that SPI is able to map regions as complex as the galactic plane. The obtained spectrum of the Crab nebula validates the present version of our response matrix. The 3 $\sigma$ sensitivity of the instrument at 1 MeV is 8 10$^{-7}$ph$\cdot$cm$^{-2}\cdot$s$^{-1}\cdot$keV$^{-1}$ for the continuum and 3 10$^{-5}$ph$\cdot$cm$^{-2}\cdot$s$^{-1}$ for narrow lines., Comment: 10 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (special INTEGRAL volume)

SPI, the Spectrometer on board the ESA INTEGRAL satellite, to be launched in October 2002, will study the gamma-ray sky in the 20 keV to 8 MeV energy band with a spectral resolution of 2 keV for photons of 1 MeV, thanks to its 19 germanium detectors spanning an active area of 500 cm2. A coded mask imaging technique provides a 2 deg angular resolution. The 16 deg field of view is defined by an active BGO veto shield, furthermore used for background rejection. In April 2001 the flight model of SPI underwent a one-month calibration campaign at CEA in Bruy\`eres le Ch\^atel using low intensity radioactive sources and the CEA accelerator for homogeneity measurements and high intensity radioactive sources for imaging performance measurements. After integration of all scientific payloads (the spectrometer SPI, the imager IBIS and the monitors JEM-X and OMC) on the INTEGRAL satellite, a cross-calibration campaign has been performed at the ESA center in Noordwijk. A set of sources has been placed in the field of view of the different instruments in order to compare their performances and determine their mutual influence. Some of those sources had already been used in Bruy\`eres during the SPI standalone test. For the lowest energy band calibration an X-ray generator has been used. We present the analysis of the first observations of the Cygnus region by the SPI spectrometer onboard the Integral Gamma Ray Observatory, encompassing ${\sim}$ 600 ks of data. Three sources namely Cyg X-1, Cyg X-3 and EXO 2030+375 were clearly detected. Our data illustrate the temporal variability of Cyg X-1 in the energy range from 20 keV to 300 keV. The spectral analysis shows a remarkable stability of the Cyg X-1 spectra when averaged over one day timescale. The other goal of these observations is SPI inflight calibration and performance verification. Three calibration campaigns of the spectrometer SPI have been performed before launch in order to determine the instrument characteristics, such as the effective detection area, the spectral resolution and the angular resolution. Absolute determination of the effective area has been obtained from simulations and measurements. At 1 MeV, the effective area is 65 cm^2 for a point source on the optical axis, the spectral resolution ~2.3 keV. The angular resolution is better than 2.5 deg and the source separation capability about 1 deg. We present INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observations of the prompt gamma-ray emission and the X-ray afterglow of GRB030227, the first GRB for which the quick localization obtained with the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System (IBAS) has led to the discovery of X-ray and optical afterglows. GRB030227 had a duration of about 20 s and a peak flux of 1.1 photons cm^-2 s^-1 in the 20-200 keV energy range. The time averaged spectrum can be fit by a single power law with photon index about 2 and we find some evidence for a hard to soft spectral evolution. The X-ray afterglow has been detected starting only 8 hours after the prompt emission, with a 0.2-10 keV flux decreasing as t^-1 from 1.3x10e-12 to 5x10e-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1. The afterglow spectrum is well described by a power law with photon index 1.94+/-0.05 modified by a redshifted neutral absorber with column density of several 10e22 cm^-2. A possible emission line at 1.67 keV could be due to Fe for a redshift z=3, consistent with the value inferred from the absorption., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, latex, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present the results of the GRANAT/SIGMA hard X-/soft gamma-ray long-term monitoring of the Galactic Center (GC) region concerning the source GRO J1744-28, discovered on 1995 Dec. 2 by CGRO/BATSE. SIGMA observed the region containing the source in 14 opportunities between 1990 and 1997. In two of these observing sessions, corresponding to March 1996 and March 1997, GRO J1744-28 was detected with a confidence level greater than 5(sigma) in the 35-75 keV energy band without detection in the 75-150 keV energy band. For the other sessions, upper limits of the flux are indicated. The particular imaging capabilities of the SIGMA telescope allow us to identify, specifically, the source position in the very crowded GC region, giving us a mean flux of (73.1 +/- 5.5)E-11 and (44.7 +/- 6.4)E-11 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 in the 35-75 keV energy band, for the March 1996 and March 1997 observing sessions, respectively. Combining the March 1997 SIGMA and BATSE observations, we found evidence pointing to the type-II nature of the source bursts for this period. For the same observing campaigns, spectra were obtained in the 35 to 150 keV energy band. The best fit corresponds to an optically thin thermal Bremsstrahlung with F(50 keV)=(3.6 +/- 0.6)E-4 phot cm^-2 s^-1 keV^-1 and kT(Bremss)=28 +/- 7 keV, for the first campaign, and F(50 keV)=(2.3 +/- 0.7)E-4 phot cm^-2 s^-1 keV^-1 and kT(Bremss)=18 (+12/-7) keV, for the second. This kind of soft spectrum is typical of binary sources containing a neutron star as the compact object, in contrast to the harder spectra typical of systems containing a black hole candidate, Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, 4 pages, 4 figures

The results of GRANAT/SIGMA hard X-ray observations of GRS 1758-258 in 1990-1998 are presented. The source lies at ~5\arcdeg from the Galactic Center and was within the SIGMA field of view during the GRANAT surveys of this region. The total exposure time of the Galactic Center was 11x10^6 s. The regular SIGMA observations revealed strong variability of the source: the 40-150 keV flux varied at least by a factor of 8 on a time scale of a year, between less than 13 mCrab and ~100-110 mCrab. The average flux was ~60 mCrab in 1990-1998. The source's spectrum is well fitted by a power law with a photon index \alpha ~1.86 in the energy range 40 to 150 keV and becomes steeper at energies above ~100 keV. The radio and hard X-ray properties of GRS 1758-258 are similar to those of another Galactic Center source, 1E1740.7-2942. GRS 1758-258 and 1E1740.7-2942 are the two brightest hard X-ray sources in the Galactic Center region. Both sources have radio jets, similar X-ray luminosities (~10^37 erg/s), and spectra, and exhibit variations in the hard X-ray flux on long times scales by a factor of ~10 or more . In contrast to most of the known black hole candidates, which are X-ray transients, GRS 1758-258 and 1E1740.7-2942 were detected by SIGMA during most of the observations in 1990-1998. Assuming that this behavior of the sources implies the suppression of accretion-disk instability in the region of partial hydrogen ionization through X-ray heating, we impose constraints on the mass of the optical companion and on the orbital period of the binary system., Comment: 18 pages with 5 figures. The Center of the Milky Way emits radiation through all the electromagnetic spectrum due to the presence of several astrophysical phenomena. Various scientifical questions remain unsolved in the picture that emerge from observations, the main one being the presence and activity of a supermassive black hole at the Galactic Center. Also in the X-ray band a strong diffuse emission is detected up to 22 keV, it has been suggested that its origin is linked to past high energy activity of the Galactic Center. The French SIGMA soft gamma ray telescope on board the Russian Granat satellite observed the Galacti Center (GC) for abour 9 X 10^6 seconds from 1990 to the end of 1997. Its unique imaging capabilities coupled with the unprecedented exposure already allowed us to set preliminary constraints on the persistent high energy emission from Sgr A*. Here we present a new analysis of the complete set of observations of this region taking into account the possible presence of diffuse emission in the low energy channels. We present observations of the X-ray transient XTEJ1755-324 performed during summer 1997 with the XTE satellite and with the SIGMA hard X-ray telescope onboard the GRANAT observatory. The source was first detected in soft X-rays with XTE on July 25 1997 with a rather soft X-ray spectrum and its outburst was monitored in soft X-rays up to November 1997. On September 16 it was first detected in hard X-rays by the French soft gamma ray telescope SIGMA during a Galactic Center observation. The flux was stronger on September 16 and 17 reaching a level of about 110 mCrab in the 40-80 keV energy band. On the same days the photon index of the spectrum was determined to be alpha =-2.3 +/- 0.9 (1 sigma error) while the 40-150 keV luminosity was about 8 x 10^{36} erg/s for a distance of 8.5 kpc. SIGMA and XTE results on this source indicate that this source had an ultrasoft-like state during its main outburst and a harder secondary outburst in September. The entire dataset of the GRANAT/SIGMA observations of Cyg X-1 and 1E1740.7-2942 in 1990-1994 was analyzed in order to search for correlations between primary observational characteristics of the hard X-ray (40-200 keV) emission - hard X-ray luminosity, hardness of the spectrum (quantified in terms of the best-fit thermal bremsstrahlung temperature kT) and the RMS of short-term flux variations. Although no strict point-to-point correlations were detected certain general tendencies are evident. It was found that for Cyg X-1 the spectral hardness is in general positively correlated with relative amplitude of short-term variability. The correlation of similar kind was found for X-ray transient GRO J0422+32 (X-ray Nova Persei 1992). For both sources an approximate correlation between kT and L_X was found. At low hard X-ray luminosity - below 10E37 erg/sec - kT increases with L_X. At higher luminosity the spectral hardness depends weaker or does not depend at all on the hard X-ray luminosity. The soft gamma-ray telescope (35-1300 keV) SIGMA aboard the high energy GRANAT space observatory has been monitoring the Galactic Bulge region for more than 2000 h of effective time since March 1990. In the resulting average 35-75 keV image we detected ten sources at a level of greater than 5 standard deviations, 6 of which can be identified with low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB). Among them, one is the 1993 X-ray nova in Ophiuchus (GRS 1726-249), one is an X-ray pulsar (GX 1+4), two are associated with X-ray bursters (GX 354-0 and A 1742-294) and two with bursting X-ray binaries in the globular clusters Terzan 2 and Terzan 1. Their spectral and long term variability behavior as measured by SIGMMA are presented and discussed.
