1. Coherence of high-dimensional random matrices in a Gaussian case : application of the Chen-Stein method

Abstract

This paper studies the $\tau$-coherence of a (n x p)-observation matrix in a Gaussian framework. The $\tau$-coherence is defined as the largest magnitude outside a diagonal bandwith of size $\tau$ of the empirical correlation coefficients associated to our observations. Using the Chen-Stein method we derive the limiting law of the normalized coherence and show the convergence towards a Gumbel distribution. We generalize here the results of Cai and Jiang [CJ11a]. We assume that the covariance matrix of the model is bandwise. Moreover, we provide numerical considerations highlighting issues from the high dimension hypotheses. We numerically illustrate the asymptotic behaviour of the coherence with Monte-Carlo experiment using a HPC splitting strategy for high dimensional correlation matrices.

SCD is associated with multiple cerebrovascular complications that threaten neurocognitive function and life. Without screening and preventive management, 11% of children at 24% of adults with SCD have ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes. Stroke screening in children with SCD is well-established using transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD). TCD velocities above 200 cm/s significantly increase the risk of stroke, which can be prevented using chronic red blood cell (RBC) transfusion. RBC transfusion is also the cornerstone of acute stroke management and secondary stroke prevention. Chronic transfusion requires long-term management of complications like iron overload. Hydroxyurea can replace chronic transfusions for primary stroke prevention in a select group of patients or in populations where chronic transfusions are not feasible. Silent cerebral infarction (SCI) is even more common than stroke, affecting 39% of children and more than 50% of adults with SCD; management of SCI is individualized and includes careful neurocognitive evaluation. Hematopoietic stem cell transplant prevents cerebrovascular complications, despite the short- and long-term risks. Newer disease-modifying agents like voxelotor and crizanlizumab, as well as gene therapy, may treat cerebrovascular complications, but these approaches are investigational.Keywords: stroke, silent cerebral infarction, moyamoya syndrome, transfusion, stem cell transplantation

Abstract

Abstract. Climate change is expected to have the greatest impact on the world's economically poor. In the Sahel, a climatically sensitive region where rain-fed agriculture is the primary livelihood, expected decreases in water supply will increase food insecurity. Studies on climate change and the intensification of the water cycle in sub-Saharan Africa are few. This is due in part to poor calibration of modeled evapotranspiration (ET), a key input in continental-scale hydrologic models. In this study, a remote sensing model of transpiration (the primary component of ET), driven by a time series of vegetation indices, was used to substitute transpiration from the Global Land Data Assimilation System realization of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, Oregon State University, Air Force, and Hydrology Research Laboratory at National Weather Service Land Surface Model (GNOAH) to improve total ET model estimates for monitoring purposes in sub-Saharan Africa. The performance of the hybrid model was compared against GNOAH ET and the remote sensing method using eight eddy flux towers representing major biomes of sub-Saharan Africa. The greatest improvements in model performance were at humid sites with dense vegetation, while performance at semi-arid sites was poor, but better than the models before hybridization. The reduction in errors using the hybrid model can be attributed to the integration of a simple canopy scheme that depends primarily on low bias surface climate reanalysis data and is driven primarily by a time series of vegetation indices.

23. The effect of variations in lake bathymetry on water levels and flood zones in Trois-Lacs, Québec

Abstract

Flood damages are linked to the maximum water elevation and extension that they can reach. These characteristics depend on streamflows and spatial configuration of the water body and floodplain. Flood studies often assume bathymetry as a permanent characteristic, yet it varies through natural processes, which can generate uncertainties in flood estimations. This research uses four bathymetry instances of a lake, distributed over three decades, to analyse their effect on water levels and extension during flood events. We use six past flood events at the study site (Trois-Lacs) in the form of hydrographs obtained with Hydrotel, a distributed physics-based hydrological model. We then used Telemac2D to run unsteady flow simulations with the different bathymetries. Results show water level differences between bathymetries under 0.13m for peak flows (exceedance probability under 0.04%), while for regular flows (exceedance probability between 32% and 68%) differences can be as great as 0.46m. Variations in flooded areas for peak flows show up to 2% differences, and for regular flows differences amount to 13%. This shows that different bathymetries produce considerable variations on water levels and flooded areas during periods of average flows, and less so for maximum flows. These results indicate that modifications of the bed of the water body should be considered when performing flow simulations and related studies, since they can convey larger flood extents during periods of normal (non-extreme) meteorological conditions. Abstract

Anthropogenic aerosols exert a cooling influence that offsets part of the greenhouse gas warming. Due to their short tropospheric lifetime of only up to several days, the aerosol forcing responds quickly to emissions. Here we present and discuss the evolution of the aerosol forcing since 2000. There are multiple lines of evidence that allow to robustly conclude that the anthropogenic aerosol effective radiative forcing – both aerosol-radiation and aerosol-cloud interactions – has become globally less negative, i.e. that the trend in aerosol effective radiative forcing changed sign from negative to positive. Bottom-up inventories show that anthropogenic primary aerosol and aerosol precursor emissions declined in most regions of the world; observations related to aerosol burden show declining trends, in particular of the fine-mode particles that make up most of the anthropogenic aerosols; satellite retrievals of cloud droplet numbers show trends consistent in sign, as do observations of top-of-atmosphere radiation. Climate model results, including a revised set that is constrained by observations of the ocean heat content evolution show a consistent sign and magnitude for a positive forcing relative to 2000 due to reduced aerosol effects. This reduction leads to an acceleration of the forcing of climate change, i.e. an increase in forcing by 0.1 to 0.3 W m-2, up to 12 % of the total climate forcing in 2019 compared to 1750 according to IPCC.
