It was recently established that self-healing slip pulses under uniform prestress $\tau_b$ are unstable frictional rupture modes, i.e., they either slowly expand/decay with time t. Furthermore, their dynamics were shown to follow a reduced-dimensionality description corresponding to a special $L(c)$ line in a plane defined by the pulse propagation velocity $c(t)$ and size $L(t)$. Yet, uniform prestress is rather the exception than the rule in natural faults. We study the effects of a spatially-varying prestress $\tau_b(x)$ on 2D slip pulses, initially generated under a uniform $\tau_b$ along a rate-and-state friction fault. We consider periodic and constant-gradient prestress $\tau_b(x)$ around the reference uniform $\tau_b$. For a periodic $\tau_b(x)$, pulses either sustain and form quasi-limit cycles in the $L-c$ plane or decay predominantly monotonically along the $L(c)$ line, depending on the instability index of the initial pulse and the properties of the periodic $\tau_b(x)$. For a constant-gradient $\tau_b(x)$, expanding/decaying pulses closely follow the $L(c)$ line, with systematic shifts determined by the sign and magnitude of the gradient. We also find that a spatially-varying $\tau_b(x)$ can revert the expanding/decaying nature of the initial reference pulse. Finally, we show that a constant-gradient $\tau_b(x)$, of sufficient magnitude and specific sign, can lead to the nucleation of a back-propagating rupture at the healing tail of the initial pulse, generating a bilateral crack-like rupture. This pulse-to-crack transition, along with the above-described effects, demonstrate that rich rupture dynamics merge from a simple, nonuniform prestress. It is now established that glasses feature low-frequency, nonphononic excitations, in addition to phonons that follow Debye's vibrational density of state (VDoS). Extensive computer studies demonstrated that these nonphononic, glassy excitations follow a universal non-Debye VDoS ${\cal D}_{\rm G}(\omega)\!\sim\!\omega^4$, at low frequencies $\omega$. Yet, due to intrinsic difficulties in disentangling ${\cal D}_{\rm G}(\omega)$ from the total VDoS ${\cal D}(\omega)$, which is experimentally accessible through various scattering techniques, the $\omega^4$ tail of ${\cal D}_{\rm G}(\omega)$ lacked direct experimental support. We develop a procedure to extract ${\cal D}_{\rm G}(\omega)$ from the measured ${\cal D}(\omega)$, based on recent advances in understanding low-frequency excitations in glasses, and apply it to available datasets for diverse glasses. The resulting analysis shows that the $\omega^4$ tail of the nonphononic vibrational spectra of glasses is nontrivially consistent with a broad range of experimental observations. In addition to Goldstone phonons that generically emerge in the low-frequency vibrational spectrum of any solid, crystalline or glassy, structural glasses also feature other low-frequency vibrational modes. The nature and statistical properties of these modes -- often termed `excess modes' -- have been the subject of decades-long investigation. Studying them, even using well-controlled computer glasses, has proven challenging due to strong spatial hybridization effects between phononic and nonphononic excitations, which hinder quantitative analyses of the nonphononic contribution ${\cal D}_{\rm G}(\omega)$ to the total spectrum ${\cal D}(\omega)$, per frequency $\omega$. Here, using recent advances indicating that ${\cal D}_{\rm G}(\omega)\!=\!{\cal D}(\omega)-{\cal D}_{\rm D}(\omega)$, where ${\cal D}_{\rm D}(\omega)$ is Debye's spectrum of phonons, we present a simple and straightforward scheme to enumerate nonphononic modes in computer glasses. Our analysis establishes that nonphononic modes in computer glasses indeed make an additive contribution to the total spectrum, including in the presence of strong hybridizations. Material failure is mediated by the propagation of cracks, which in realistic 3D materials typically involve multiple coexisting fracture planes. Multiple fracture-plane interactions create poorly understood out-of-plane crack structures, such as step defects on tensile fracture surfaces. Steps form once a slowly moving, distorted crack front segments into disconnected overlapping fracture planes separated by a stabilizing distance $h_{\rm max}$. Our experiments on numerous brittle hydrogels reveal that $h_{\rm max}$ varies linearly with both a nonlinear elastic length $\Gamma(v)/\mu$ and a dissipation length $\xi$. Here, $\Gamma(v)$ is the measured crack velocity $v$-dependent fracture energy and $\mu$ is the shear modulus. Cracks develop various surface patterns as they propagate in three-dimensional (3D) materials. Facet formation in nominally tensile (mode-I) fracture emerge in the slow, non-inertial regime and oftentimes takes the form of surface steps. We show that the same phase-field framework that recently shed basic light on dynamic (inertial) tensile fracture in 3D, also gives rise to crack surface steps. Step formation is shown to be an intrinsically nonlinear phenomenon that involves two essential physical ingredients: finite-strength quenched disorder and a small, mesoscopic anti-plane shear (mode-III) loading component (on top of the dominant tensile, mode-I loading component). We quantify the interplay between disorder (both its strength and spatial correlation length) and mesoscopic mode I+III mixity in controlling step formation. Finally, we show that surface steps grow out of the small-scale, background surface roughness and are composed of two overlapping crack segments connected by a bridging crack, in agreement with experiments., Comment: 5 pages + Supplemental Materials + bibliographical list

The emergence of statistical complexity in frictional systems, manifested in broad distributions of various observables, is not yet understood. We study this problem in velocity-driven, homogeneous (no quenched disorder) unstable frictional systems of height $H$. The latter are described at the continuum scale within a realistic rate-and-state friction interfacial constitutive framework, where elasto-frictional instabilities emerge from rate-weakening friction. For large $H$, such frictional systems were recently shown to undergo continuous coarsening until settling into a spatially periodic traveling solution. We show that when the system's height-to-length ratio becomes small, coarsening is less effective and the periodic solution is dynamically avoided. Instead, and consistently with previous reports, the system settles into a stochastic, statistically stationary state. The latter features slip bursts, classified into predominantly non-propagating small bursts and propagating large bursts, which are non-trivially distributed. The statistical distributions emerge from dynamically self-generated heterogeneity, where both the non-equilibrium history of the interface and wave reflections from finite boundaries, mediated by material inertia, play central roles. Specifically, the dynamics and statistics of large bursts reveal a timescale $\sim\!H/c_{\rm s}$, where $c_{\rm s}$ is the shear wave-speed. We discuss the robustness of our findings against variations of the frictional parameters, most notably affecting the magnitude of frictional rate-weakening, as well as against different interfacial state evolution laws. Finally, we demonstrate a reverse transition in which statistical complexity disappears in favor of the spatially periodic traveling solution. Materials typically fail under complex stress states, essentially involving dilatational (volumetric) components that eventually lead to material decohesion/separation. It is therefore important to understand dilatational irreversible deformation -- i.e., dilatational plasticity -- en route to failure. In the context of glasses, much focus has been given to shear (volume-preserving) plasticity, both in terms of the stress states considered and the corresponding material response. Here, using a recently-developed methodology and extensive computer simulations, we shed basic light on the elementary processes mediating dilatational plasticity in glasses. We show that plastic instabilities, corresponding to singularities of the glass Hessian, generically feature both dilatational and shear irreversible strain components. The relative magnitude and statistics of the strain components depend both on the symmetry of the driving stress (e.g., shear vs.~hydrostatic tension) and on the cohesive (attractive) part of the interatomic interaction. We further show that the tensorial shear component of the plastic strain is generally non-planar and also extract the characteristic volume of plastic instabilities. Elucidating the fundamental properties of the elementary micro-mechanical building blocks of plasticity in glasses sets the stage for addressing larger-scale, collective phenomena in dilatational plasticity such as topological changes in the form of cavitation and ductile-to-brittle transitions. Materials failure in 3D still poses basic challenges. We study 3D brittle crack dynamics using a phase-field approach, where Gaussian quenched disorder in the fracture energy is incorporated. Disorder is characterized by a correlation length $R$ and strength $\sigma$. We find that the mean crack velocity $v$ is bounded by a limiting velocity, which is smaller than the homogeneous material's prediction and decreases with $\sigma$. It emerges from a dynamic renormalization of the fracture energy with increasing crack driving force $G$, resembling a critical point, due to an interplay between a 2D branching instability and disorder. At small $G$, the probability of localized branching on a scale $R$ is super-exponentially small. With increasing $G$ this probability quickly increases, leading to misty fracture surfaces, yet the associated extra dissipation remains small. As $G$ is further increased, branching-related lengthscales become dynamic and persistently increase, leading to hackle-like structures and to a macroscopic contribution to the fracture surface. The latter dynamically renormalizes the actual fracture energy until eventually any increase in $G$ is balanced by extra fracture surface, with no accompanying increase in $v$. Finally, branching width reaches the system's thickness such that 2D symmetry is statistically restored. Crack front waves (FWs) are dynamic objects that propagate along moving crack fronts in 3D materials. We study FW dynamics in the framework of a 3D phase-field framework that features a rate-dependent fracture energy $\Gamma(v)$ ($v$ is the crack propagation velocity) and intrinsic lengthscales, and quantitatively reproduces the high-speed oscillatory instability in the quasi-2D limit. We show that in-plane FWs feature a rather weak time dependence, with decay rate that increases with $d\Gamma(v)/dv\!>\!0$, and largely retain their properties upon FW-FW interactions, similarly to a related experimentally-observed solitonic behavior. Driving in-plane FWs into the nonlinear regime, we find that they propagate slower than predicted by a linear perturbation theory. Finally, by introducing small out-of-plane symmetry-breaking perturbations, coupled in- and out-of-plane FWs are excited, but the out-of-plane component decays under pure tensile loading. Self-healing slip pulses are major spatiotemporal failure modes of frictional systems, featuring a characteristic size $L(t)$ and a propagation velocity $c_{\rm p}(t)$ ($t$ is time). Here, we develop a theory of slip pulses in realistic rate-and-state dependent frictional systems. We show that slip pulses are intrinsically unsteady objects -- in agreement with previous findings -- yet their dynamical evolution is closely related to their unstable steady-state counterparts. In particular, we show that each point along the time-independent $L^{\mbox{{(0)}}}(\tau_{\rm d})\!-\!c^{\mbox{{(0)}}}_{\rm p}(\tau_{\rm d})$ line, obtained from a family of steady-state pulse solutions parameterized by the driving shear stress $\tau_{\rm d}$, is unstable. Nevertheless, and remarkably, the $c^{\mbox{{(0)}}}_{\rm p}[L^{\mbox{{(0)}}}]$ line is a dynamic attractor such that the unsteady dynamics of slip pulses (when they exist) -- whether growing ($\dot{L}(t)\!>\!0$) or decaying ($\dot{L}(t)\!<\!0$) -- reside on the steady-state line. The unsteady dynamics along the line are controlled by a single slow unstable mode. The slow dynamics of growing pulses, manifested by $\dot{L}(t)/c_{\rm p}(t)\!\ll\!1$, explain the existence of sustained pulses, i.e.~pulses that propagate many times their characteristic size without appreciably changing their properties. A hallmark of glasses is an excess of low-frequency, nonphononic vibrations, in addition to phonons. It is associated with the intrinsically nonequilibrium and disordered nature of glasses, and is generically manifested as a THz peak -- the boson peak -- in the ratio of the vibrational density of state (VDoS) and Debye's VDoS of phonons. Yet, the excess vibrations and the boson peak are not fully understood. Here, using reanalysis of experimental data, extensive computer simulations and a mean-field model, we show that the nonphononic part of the VDoS itself features both a universal power-law tail and a peak, entirely accounted for by quasi-localized nonphononic vibrations, whose existence was recently established. We explain the mild variation of the peak's frequency and magnitude with glasses' thermal history, along with the strong variation of the power-law tail. We also show that modes that populate the peak's region feature many coupled quasi-localized nonphononic vibrations, when their spatial structure is considered. Our results provide a unified physical picture of the low-frequency vibrational spectra of glasses, and in particular elucidate the origin, nature and properties of the boson peak., Comment: 6 pages and 4 figures + Supplementary Materials

The transition between necking-mediated tensile failure of glasses, at elevated temperatures and/or low strain-rates, and shear-banding-mediated tensile failure, at low temperatures and/or high strain-rates, is investigated using tensile experiments on metallic glasses and atomistic simulations. We experimentally and simulationally show that this transition occurs through a sequence of macroscopic failure patterns, parametrized by the ultimate tensile strength. Quantitatively analyzing the spatiotemporal dynamics preceding failure, using large scale atomistic simulations corroborated by experimental fractography, reveals how the collective evolution and mutual interaction of shear-driven plasticity and dilation-driven void formation (cavitation) control the various macroscopic failure modes. In particular, we find that at global failure, the size of the largest cavity in the loading direction exhibits a nonmonotonic dependence on the temperature at a fixed strain rate, which is rationalized in terms of the interplay between shear- and dilation-driven plasticity. We also find that the size of the largest cavity scales with the cross-sectional area of the undeformed sample. These results shed light on tensile failure of glasses, and highlight the need to develop elasto-plastic constitutive models of glasses incorporating both shear- and dilation-driven irreversible processes.

A hallmark of structural glasses and other disordered solids is the emergence of excess low-frequency vibrations, on top of the Debye spectrum $D_{\rm Debye}(\omega)$ of phonons ($\omega$ denotes the vibrational frequency), which exist in any solid whose Hamiltonian is translationally invariant. These excess vibrations -- a signature of which is a THz peak in the reduced density of states $D(\omega)/D_{\rm Debye}(\omega)$, known as the boson peak -- have resisted a complete theoretical understanding for decades. Here, we provide direct numerical evidence that vibrations near the boson peak consist of hybridizations of phonons with many quasilocalized excitations, the latter were recently shown to generically populate the low-frequency tail of the vibrational spectra of structural glasses quenched from a melt and of disordered crystals. Our results suggest that quasilocalized excitations exist up to and in the vicinity of the boson-peak frequency, and hence constitute fundamental building blocks of the excess vibrational modes in glasses., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. v2: additional analysis + 2 new figures

Continuum elasticity is a powerful tool applicable in a broad range of physical systems and phenomena. Yet, understanding how and on what scales material disorder may lead to the breakdown of continuum elasticity is not fully understood. We show, based on recent theoretical developments and extensive numerical computations, that disordered elastic networks near a critical rigidity transition, such as strain-stiffened fibrous biopolymer networks that are abundant in living systems, reveal an anomalous long-range linear elastic response below a correlation length. This emergent anomalous elasticity, which is non-affine in nature, is shown to feature a qualitatively different multipole expansion structure compared to ordinary continuum elasticity, and a slower spatial decay of perturbations. The potential degree of universality of these results, their implications (e.g. for cell-cell communication through biological extracellular matrices) and open questions are briefly discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Disordered elastic networks provide a framework for describing a wide variety of physical systems, ranging from amorphous solids, through polymeric fibrous materials to confluent cell tissues. In many cases, such networks feature two widely separated rigidity scales and are nearly floppy, yet they undergo a dramatic stiffening transition when driven to sufficiently large strains. We present a complete scaling theory of the critical strain-stiffened state in terms of the small ratio between the rigidity scales, which is conceptualized in the framework of a singular perturbation theory. The critical state features quartic anharmonicity, from which a set of nonlinear scaling relations is derived. Scaling predictions for the macroscopic elastic modulus beyond the critical state are derived as well, revealing a previously unidentified characteristic strain scale. The scaling form and system-size dependence of the low-frequency wing of the nonphononic vibrational spectrum of two-dimensional structural glasses have been debated in recent literature. A prominent spatiotemporal failure mode of frictional systems is self-healing slip pulses, which are propagating solitonic structures that feature a characteristic length. Here, we numerically derive a family of steady state slip pulse solutions along generic and realistic rate-and-state dependent frictional interfaces, separating large deformable bodies in contact. Such nonlinear interfaces feature a non-monotonic frictional strength as a function of the slip velocity, with a local minimum. The solutions exhibit a diverging length and strongly inertial propagation velocities, when the driving stress approaches the frictional strength characterizing the local minimum from above, and change their character when it is away from it. An approximate scaling theory quantitatively explains these observations. The derived pulse solutions also exhibit significant spatially-extended dissipation in excess of the edge-localized dissipation (the effective fracture energy) and an unconventional edge singularity. Structural glasses formed by quenching a melt are known to host a population of low-energy quasilocalized (nonphononic) excitations whose frequencies $\omega$ follow a universal $\sim\!\omega^4$ distribution as $\omega\!\to\!0$, independently of the glass formation history, the interparticle interaction potential or spatial dimension. Here, we show that the universal quartic law of nonphononic excitations also holds in disordered crystals featuring finite long-range order, which is absent in their glassy counterparts. We thus establish that the degree of universality of the quartic law extends beyond structural glasses quenched from a melt. We further find that disordered crystals, whose level of disorder can be continuously controlled, host many more quasilocalized excitations than expected based on their degree of mechanical disorder -- quantified by the relative fluctuations of the shear modulus -- as compared to structural glasses featuring a similar degree of mechanical disorder. Finally, we show that the stability bound on nonlinear quasilocalized excitations -- previously established in structural glasses -- also holds in disordered crystals. Our results are related to glass-like anomalies experimentally observed in disordered crystals. Glassy solids exhibit a wide variety of generic thermomechanical properties, ranging from universal anomalous specific heat at cryogenic temperatures to nonlinear plastic yielding and failure under external driving forces, which qualitatively differ from their crystalline counterparts. For a long time, it has been believed that many of these properties are intimately related to nonphononic, low-energy quasilocalized excitations (QLEs) in glasses. Indeed, recent computer simulations have conclusively revealed that the self-organization of glasses during vitrification upon cooling from a melt leads to the emergence of such QLEs. In this Perspective Article, we review developments over the past three decades towards understanding the emergence of QLEs in structural glasses, and the degree of universality in their statistical and structural properties. We discuss the challenges and difficulties that hindered progress in achieving these goals, and review the frameworks put forward to overcome them. Mechanical disorder in solids, which is generated by a broad range of physical processes and controls various material properties, appears in a wide variety of forms. Defining unified and measurable dimensionless quantifiers, allowing quantitative comparison of mechanical disorder across widely different physical systems, is therefore an important goal. Two such coarse-grained dimensionless quantifiers (among others) appear in the literature, one is related to the spectral broadening of discrete phononic bands in finite-size systems (accessible through computer simulations) and the other is related the spatial fluctuations of the shear modulus in macroscopically large systems. The latter has been recently shown to determine the amplitude of wave attenuation rates in the low-frequency limit (accessible through laboratory experiments). Here, using two alternative and complementary theoretical approaches linked to the vibrational spectra of solids, we derive a basic scaling relation between the two dimensionless quantifiers. This scaling relation, which is supported by simulational data, shows that the two apparently distinct quantifiers are in fact intrinsically related, giving rise to a unified quantifier of mechanical disorder in solids. We further discuss the obtained results in the context of the unjamming transition taking place in soft sphere packings at low confining pressures, in addition to their implications for our understanding of the low-frequency vibrational spectra of disordered solids in general, and in particular those of glassy systems., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Frictional sliding is an intrinsically complex phenomenon, emerging from the interplay between driving forces, elasto-frictional instabilities, interfacial nonlinearity and dissipation, material inertia and bulk geometry. We show that homogeneous rate-and-state dependent frictional systems, driven at a prescribed boundary velocity -- as opposed to a prescribed stress -- in a range where the frictional interface is rate-weakening, generically host self-healing slip pulses, a sliding mode not yet fully understood. Such velocity-driven frictional systems are then shown to exhibit coarsening dynamics saturated at the system length in the sliding direction, independently of the system's height, leading to steadily propagating pulse trains. The latter may be viewed as a propagating phase-separated state, where slip and stick characterize the two phases. While pulse trains' periodicity is coarsening-limited by the system's length, the single pulse width, characteristic slip velocity and propagation speed exhibit rich properties, which are comprehensively understood using theory and extensive numerics. Finally, we show that for sufficiently small system heights, pulse trains are accompanied by periodic elasto-frictional instabilities., Comment: 18 page, 9 figures (including appendices)

The dramatic slowing down of relaxation dynamics of liquids approaching the glass transition remains a highly debated problem, where the crux of the puzzle resides in the elusive increase of the activation barrier $\Delta E(T)$ with decreasing temperature $T$. A class of theoretical frameworks -- known as elastic models -- attribute this temperature dependence to the variations of the liquid's macroscopic elasticity, quantified by the high-frequency shear modulus $G_\infty(T)$. While elastic models find some support in a number of experimental studies, these models do not take into account the spatial structures, length scales, and heterogeneity associated with structural relaxation in supercooled liquids. Here, we propose that viscous slowing down is controlled by a mesoscopic elastic stiffness $\kappa(T)$, defined as the characteristic stiffness of response fields to local dipole forces in the liquid's underlying inherent states. First, we show that $\kappa(T)$ -- which is intimately related to the energy and length scales characterizing quasilocalized, nonphononic excitations in glasses -- increases more strongly with decreasing $T$ than the macroscopic inherent state shear modulus $G(T)$ in several computer liquids. Second, we show that the simple relation $\Delta E(T)\propto\kappa(T)$ holds remarkably well for some computer liquids, implying a direct connection between the liquid's underlying mesoscopic elasticity and enthalpic energy barriers. Crack-like objects that propagate along frictional interfaces, i.e.~frictional shear cracks, play a major role in a broad range of frictional phenomena. Such frictional cracks are commonly assumed to feature the universal square root near-edge singularity of ideal shear cracks, as predicted by Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Here we show that this is not the generic case due to the intrinsic dependence of the frictional strength on the slip rate, even if the bodies forming the frictional interface are identical and predominantly linear elastic. Instead, frictional shear cracks feature unconventional singularities characterized by a singularity order $\xi$ that differs from the conventional $-\tfrac{1}{2}$ one. It is shown that $\xi$ depends on the friction law, on the propagation speed and on the symmetry mode of loading. We discuss the general structure of a theory of unconventional singularities, along with their implications for the energy balance and dynamics of frictional cracks. Finally, we present explicit calculations of $\xi$ and the associated near-edge fields for linear viscous-friction -- which may emerge as a perturbative approximation of nonlinear friction laws or on its own -- for both in-plane (mode-II) and anti-plane (mode-III) shear loadings., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

Understanding the fracture toughness of glasses is of prime importance for science and technology. We study it here using extensive atomistic simulations in which the interaction potential, glass transition cooling rate and loading geometry are systematically varied, mimicking a broad range of experimentally accessible properties. Glasses' nonequilibrium mechanical disorder is quantified through $A_{\rm g}$, the dimensionless prefactor of the universal spectrum of nonphononic excitations, which measures the abundance of soft glassy defects that affect plastic deformability. We show that while a brittle-to-ductile transition might be induced by reducing the cooling rate, leading to a reduction in $A_{\rm g}$, iso-$\!A_{\rm g}$ glasses are either brittle or ductile depending on the degree of Poisson contraction under unconstrained uniaxial tension. Eliminating Poisson contraction using constrained tension reveals that iso-$\!A_{\rm g}$ glasses feature similar toughness, and that varying $A_{\rm g}$ under these conditions results in significant toughness variation. We study a recently introduced and exactly solvable mean-field model for the density of vibrational states $\mathcal{D}(\omega)$ of a structurally disordered system. The model is formulated as a collection of disordered anharmonic oscillators, with random stiffness $\kappa$ drawn from a distribution $p(\kappa)$, subjected to a constant field $h$ and interacting bilinearly with a coupling of strength $J$. We investigate the vibrational properties of its ground state at zero temperature. When $p(\kappa)$ is gapped, the emergent $\mathcal{D}(\omega)$ is also gapped, for small $J$. Upon increasing $J$, the gap vanishes on a critical line in the $(h,J)$ phase diagram, whereupon replica symmetry is broken. At small $h$, the form of this pseudogap is quadratic, $\mathcal{D}(\omega)\sim\omega^2$, and its modes are delocalized, as expected from previously investigated mean-field spin glass models. However, we determine that for large enough $h$, a quartic pseudogap $\mathcal{D}(\omega)\sim\omega^4$, populated by localized modes, emerges, the two regimes being separated by a special point on the critical line. We thus uncover that mean-field disordered systems can generically display both a quadratic-delocalized and a quartic-localized spectrum at the glass transition., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures

Recent theoretical and computational progress has led to unprecedented understanding of symmetry-breaking instabilities in 2D dynamic fracture. At the heart of this progress resides the identification of two intrinsic, near crack tip length scales -- a nonlinear elastic length scale $\ell$ and a dissipation length scale $\xi$ -- that do not exist in the classical theory of cracks. In particular, it has been shown that at a high propagation velocity $v$, cracks in 2D brittle materials undergo an oscillatory instability whose wavelength varies linearly with $\ell$, and at yet higher propagation velocities and larger loading levels, a tip-splitting instability emerges, both in agreements with experiments. In this paper, using phase-field models of brittle fracture, we demonstrate the following properties of the oscillatory instability: (i) It exists also in the absence of near-tip elastic nonlinearity, i.e. in the limit $\ell\!\to\!0$, with a wavelength determined by the dissipation length scale $\xi$. This result shows that the instability crucially depends on the existence of an intrinsic length scale associated with the breakdown of linear elasticity near crack tips, independently of whether the latter is related to nonlinear elasticity or to dissipation. (ii) It is a supercritical Hopf bifurcation, featuring a vanishing oscillations amplitude at onset. (iii) It is largely independent of the fracture energy $\Gamma(v)$ that is controlled by a dissipation time scale. These results substantiate the universal nature of the oscillatory instability of ultra-high speed cracks in 2D. In addition, we provide evidence indicating that the ultra-high velocity tip-splitting instability is controlled by the limiting rate of elastic energy transport inside the crack tip region. Quantifying mechanical disorder in solids, either disordered crystals or glassy solids, and understanding its range of variability are of prime importance, e.g.~for discovering structure-properties relations. The bounds on the degree of mechanical fluctuations in disordered solids and how those depend on solids formation history remain unknown. Here, we study a broadly applicable quantifier of mesoscopic mechanical disorder $\chi$, defined via the dimensionless fluctuations of the shear modulus, over a wide variety of disordered computer solids and upon varying different control parameters. $\chi$ is intimately related to basic properties of disordered solids, such as elastic constants and plastic deformability, and can be experimentally extracted by wave-attenuation measurements. We find that a large variety of self-organized glassy solids, where disorder is an emergent property, appear to satisfy a generic lower bound on $\chi$. On the other hand, we show that $\chi$ is unbounded from above, and may diverge in systems driven towards the critical unjamming point. Structural glasses feature quasilocalized excitations whose frequencies $\omega$ follow a universal density of states ${\cal D}(\omega)\!\sim\!\omega^4$. Yet, the underlying physics behind this universality is not fully understood. Here we study a mean-field model of quasilocalized excitations in glasses, viewed as groups of particles embedded inside an elastic medium and described collectively as anharmonic oscillators. The oscillators, whose harmonic stiffness is taken from a rather featureless probability distribution (of upper cutoff $\kappa_0$) in the absence of interactions, interact among themselves through random couplings (characterized by strength $J$) and with the surrounding elastic medium (an interaction characterized by a constant force $h$). We first show that the model gives rise to a gapless density of states ${\cal D}(\omega)\!=\!A_{\rm g}\,\omega^4$ for a broad range of model parameters, expressed in terms of the strength of stabilizing anharmonicity, which plays a decisive role in the model. Then -- using scaling theory and numerical simulations -- we provide a complete understanding of the non-universal prefactor $A_{\rm g}(h,J,\kappa_0)$, of the oscillators' interaction-induced mean square displacement and of an emerging characteristic frequency, all in terms of properly identified dimensionless quantities. In particular, we show that $A_{\rm g}(h,J,\kappa_0)$ is a nonmonotonic function of $J$ for a fixed $h$, varying predominantly exponentially with $-(\kappa_0 h^{2/3}\!/J^2)$ in the weak interactions (small $J$) regime -- reminiscent of recent observations in computer glasses -- and predominantly decaying as a power-law for larger $J$, in a regime where $h$ plays no role. The disorder-induced attenuation of elastic waves is central to the universal low-temperature properties of glasses. Recent literature offers conflicting views on both the scaling of the wave attenuation rate $\Gamma(\omega)$ in the low-frequency limit ($\omega\!\to\!0$), and on its dependence on glass history and properties. A theoretical framework -- termed Fluctuating Elasticity Theory (FET) -- predicts low-frequency Rayleigh scattering scaling in $d$ spatial dimensions, $\Gamma(\omega)\!\sim\!\gamma\,\omega^{d+1}$, where $\gamma\!=\!\gamma(V_{\rm c})$ quantifies the coarse-grained spatial fluctuations of elastic moduli, involving a correlation volume $V_{\rm c}$ that remains debated. Here, using extensive computer simulations, we show that $\Gamma(\omega)\!\sim\!\gamma\,\omega^3$ is asymptotically satisfied in two dimensions ($d\!=\!2$) once $\gamma$ is interpreted in terms of ensemble -- rather than spatial -- averages, where $V_{\rm c}$ is replaced by the system size. In so doing, we also establish that the finite-size ensemble-statistics of elastic moduli is anomalous and related to the universal $\omega^4$ density of states of soft quasilocalized modes. A widespread framework for understanding frictional rupture, such as earthquakes along geological faults, invokes an analogy to ordinary cracks. A distinct feature of ordinary cracks is that their near edge fields are characterized by a square root singularity, which is intimately related to the existence of strict dissipation-related lengthscale separation and edge-localized energy balance. Yet, the interrelations between the singularity order, lengthscale separation and edge-localized energy balance in frictional rupture are not fully understood, even in physical situations in which the conventional square root singularity remains approximately valid. Here we develop a macroscopic theory that shows that the generic rate-dependent nature of friction leads to deviations from the conventional singularity, and that even if this deviation is small, significant non-edge-localized rupture-related dissipation emerges. The physical origin of the latter, which is predicted to vanish identically in the crack analogy, is the breakdown of scale separation that leads an accumulated spatially-extended dissipation, involving macroscopic scales. The non-edge-localized rupture-related dissipation is also predicted to be position dependent. Low-frequency nonphononic modes and plastic rearrangements in glasses are spatially quasilocalized, i.e. feature a disorder-induced short-range core and known long-range decaying elastic fields. Extracting the unknown short-range core properties, potentially accessible in computer glasses, is of prime importance. Here we consider a class of contour integrals, performed over the known long-range fields, which are especially designed for extracting the core properties. We first show that in computer glasses of typical sizes used in current studies, the long-range fields of quasilocalized modes experience boundary effects related to the simulation box shape and the widely employed periodic boundary conditions. In particular, image interactions mediated by the box shape and the periodic boundary conditions induce fields' rotation and orientation-dependent suppression of their long-range decay. We then develop a continuum theory that quantitatively predicts these finite-size boundary effects and support it by extensive computer simulations. The theory accounts for the finite-size boundary effects and at the same time allows the extraction of the short-range core properties, such as their typical strain ratios and orientation. The theory is extensively validated in both 2D and 3D. Overall, our results offer a useful tool for extracting the intrinsic core properties of nonphononic modes and plastic rearrangements in computer glasses., Comment: Clarifying comments added, sign convention fixed in Eqs. The fracture of highly deformable soft materials is of great practical importance in a wide range of technological applications, emerging in fields such as soft robotics, stretchable electronics and tissue engineering. From a basic physics perspective, the failure of these materials poses fundamental challenges due to the strongly nonlinear and dissipative deformation involved. In this review, we discuss the physics of cracks in soft materials and highlight two length scales that characterize the strongly nonlinear elastic and dissipation zones near crack tips in such materials. We discuss physical processes, theoretical concepts and mathematical results that elucidate the nature of the two length scales, and show that the two length scales can classify a wide range of materials. The emerging multi-scale physical picture outlines the theoretical ingredients required for the development of predictive theories of the fracture soft materials. It has been recently established that the low-frequency spectrum of simple computer glass models is populated by soft, quasilocalized nonphononic vibrational modes whose frequencies $\omega$ follow a gapless, universal distribution ${\cal D}(\omega)\!\sim\!\omega^4$. While this universal nonphononic spectrum has been shown to be robust to varying the glass history and spatial dimension, it has so far only been observed in simple computer glasses featuring radially-symmetric, pairwise interaction potentials. Consequently, the relevance of the universality of nonphononic spectra seen in simple computer glasses to realistic laboratory glasses remains unclear. Here we demonstrate the emergence of the universal $\omega^4$ nonphononic spectrum in a broad variety of realistic computer glass models, ranging from tetrahedral network glasses with three-body interactions, through molecular glasses and glassy polymers, to bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). Taken together with previous observations, our results indicate that the low-frequency nonphononic vibrational spectrum of any glassy solid quenched from a melt features the universal $\omega^4$ law, independently of the nature of its microscopic interactions., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Soft quasilocalized modes (QLMs) are universally featured by structural glasses quenched from a melt, and are supposedly involved in a number of glassy anomalies such as the low temperature scaling of their thermal conductivity and specific heat, and sound attenuation at intermediate frequencies. In computer glasses, QLMs may assume the form of harmonic vibrational modes under a narrow set of circumstances, however direct access to their full distribution over frequency is hindered by hybridizations of QLMs with other low-frequency modes (e.g.~phonons). Previous studies to overcome this issue have demonstrated that the response of a glass to local force dipoles serves as a good proxy for its QLMs; we therefore study here the statistical-mechanical properties of the responses to local force dipoles in computer glasses, over a large range of glass stabilities and in various spatial dimensions, with the goal of revealing properties of the yet-inaccessible full distribution of QLMs' frequencies. We find that, as opposed to the spatial-dimension-independent universal distribution of QLMs' frequencies $\omega$ (and, consequently, also of their stiffness $\kappa\!=\!\omega^2$), the distribution of stiffnesses associated with responses to local force dipoles features a (weak) dependence on spatial dimension. We rationalize this dependence by introducing a lattice model that incorporates both the real-space profiles of QLMs --- associated with dimension-dependent long-range elastic fields --- and the universal statistical properties of their frequencies. Finally, we discuss possible connections between our findings and basic aspects of the glass transition problem, and to finite-size effects in plastic activity of ultrastable glasses., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

It is now well established that glasses feature quasilocalized nonphononic excitations --- coined "soft spots"---, which follow a universal $\omega^4$ density of states in the limit of low frequencies $\omega$. All glass-specific properties, such as the dependence on the preparation protocol or composition, are encapsulated in the non-universal prefactor of the universal $\omega^4$ law. The prefactor, however, is a composite quantity that incorporates information both about the number of quasilocalized nonphononic excitations and their characteristic stiffness, in an apparently inseparable manner. We show that by pinching a glass, i.e. by probing its response to force dipoles, one can disentangle and independently extract these two fundamental pieces of physical information. This analysis reveals that the number of quasilocalized nonphononic excitations follows a Boltzmann-like law in terms of the parent temperature from which the glass is quenched. The latter, sometimes termed the fictive (or effective) temperature, plays important roles in non-equilibrium thermodynamic approaches to the relaxation, flow and deformation of glasses. The analysis also shows that the characteristic stiffness of quasilocalized nonphononic excitations can be related to their characteristic size, a long sought-for length scale. Frictional interfaces are abundant in natural and engineering systems, and predicting their behavior still poses challenges of prime scientific and technological importance. At the heart of these challenges lies the inherent coupling between the interfacial constitutive relation -- the macroscopic friction law -- and the bulk elasticity of the bodies that form the frictional interface. In this feature paper, we discuss the generic properties of the macroscopic friction law and the many ways in which its coupling to bulk elasticity gives rise to rich spatiotemporal frictional dynamics. We first present the widely used rate-and-state friction constitutive framework, discuss its power and limitations, and propose extensions that are supported by experimental data. We then discuss how bulk elasticity couples different parts of the interface, and how the range and nature of this interaction are affected by the system's geometry. Finally, in light of the coupling between interfacial and bulk physics, we discuss basic phenomena in spatially-extended frictional systems, including the stability of homogeneous sliding, the onset of sliding motion and a wide variety of propagating frictional modes (e.g. rupture fronts, healing fronts and slip pulses). The failure of frictional interfaces -- the process of frictional rupture -- is widely assumed to feature crack-like properties, with far-reaching implications for various disciplines, ranging from engineering tribology to earthquake physics. An important condition for the emergence of a crack-like behavior is the existence of stress drops in frictional rupture, whose basic physical origin has been recently elucidated. Here we show that for generic and realistic frictional constitutive relations, and once the necessary conditions for the emergence of an effective crack-like behavior are met, frictional rupture dynamics are approximately described by a crack-like, fracture mechanics energy balance equation. This is achieved by independently calculating the intensity of the crack-like singularity along with its associated elastic energy flux into the rupture edge region, and the frictional dissipation in the edge region. We further show that while the fracture mechanics energy balance equation provides an approximate, yet quantitative, description of frictional rupture dynamics, interesting deviations from the ordinary crack-like framework -- associated with non-edge-localized dissipation -- exist. Together with the recent results about the emergence of stress drops in frictional rupture, this work offers a comprehensive and basic understanding of why, how and to what extent frictional rupture might be viewed as an ordinary fracture process. The process of frictional rupture, i.e. the failure of frictional systems, abounds in the technological and natural world around us, ranging from squealing car brake pads to earthquakes along geological faults. A general framework for understanding and interpreting frictional rupture commonly involves an analogy to ordinary crack propagation, with far-reaching implications for various disciplines, from engineering tribology to geophysics. An important feature of the analogy to cracks is the existence of a reduction in the stress-bearing capacity of the ruptured interface, i.e. of a drop from the applied stress, realized far ahead of a propagating rupture, to the residual stress left behind it. Yet, how and under what conditions such finite and well-defined stress drops emerge from basic physics are not well understood. Here we show that for rapid rupture a stress drop is directly related to wave radiation from the frictional interface to the bodies surrounding it and to long-range bulk elastodynamics, and not exclusively to the physics of the contact interface. Furthermore, we show that the emergence of a stress drop is a transient effect, affected by the wave travel time in finite systems and by the decay of long-range elastic interactions. Finally, we supplement our results for rapid rupture with predictions for slow rupture. All of the theoretical predictions are supported by available experimental data and by extensive computations. The attenuation of long-wavelength phonons (waves) by glassy disorder plays a central role in various glass anomalies, yet it is neither fully characterized, nor fully understood. Of particular importance is the scaling of the attenuation rate $\Gamma(k)$ with small wavenumbers $k\!\to\!0$ in the thermodynamic limit of macroscopic glasses. Here we use a combination of theory and extensive computer simulations to show that the macroscopic low-frequency behavior emerges at intermediate frequencies in finite-size glasses, above a recently identified crossover wavenumber $k_\dagger$, where phonons are no longer quantized into bands. For $k\!<\!k_\dagger$, finite-size effects dominate $\Gamma(k)$, which is quantitatively described by a theory of disordered phonon bands. For $k\!>\!k_\dagger$, we find that $\Gamma(k)$ is affected by the number of quasilocalized nonphononic excitations, a generic signature of glasses that feature a universal density of states. In particular, we show that in a frequency range in which this number is small, $\Gamma(k)$ follows a Rayleigh scattering scaling $\sim\!k^{d+1}$ ($d$ is the spatial dimension), and that in a frequency range in which this number is sufficiently large, the recently observed generalized-Rayleigh scaling of the form $\sim\!k^{d+1}\log\!{(k_0/k)}$ emerges ($k_0\!>k_\dagger$ is a characteristic wavenumber). Our results suggest that macroscopic glasses --- and, in particular, glasses generated by conventional laboratory quenches that are known to strongly suppress quasilocalized nonphononic excitations --- exhibit Rayleigh scaling at the lowest wavenumbers $k$ and a crossover to generalized-Rayleigh scaling at higher $k$. There is a growing evidence that relaxation in glassy materials, both spontaneous and externally driven, is mediated by localized soft spots. Recent progress made it possible to identify the soft spots inside glassy structures and to quantify their degree of softness. These softness measures, however, are typically scalars, not taking into account the tensorial/anisotropic nature of soft spots, which implies orientation-dependent coupling to external deformation. Here we derive from first principles the linear response coupling between the local heat capacity of glasses, previously shown to provide a measure of glassy softness, and external deformation in different directions. We first show that this linear response quantity follows an anomalous, fat-tailed distribution related to the universal $\omega^4$ density of states of quasilocalized, nonphononic excitations in glasses. We then construct a structural predictor as the product of the local heat capacity and its linear response to external deformation, and show that it offers enhanced predictability of plastic rearrangements under deformation in different directions, compared to the purely scalar predictor., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures and Supplemental Material

The two-dimensional oscillatory crack instability, experimentally observed in a class of brittle materials under strongly dynamic conditions, has been recently reproduced by a nonlinear phase-field fracture theory. Here we highlight the universal character of this instability by showing that it is present in materials exhibiting widely different near crack tip elastic nonlinearity, and by demonstrating that the oscillations wavelength follows a universal master curve in terms of dissipation-related and nonlinear elastic intrinsic length scales. Moreover, we show that upon increasing the driving force for fracture, a high-velocity tip-splitting instability emerges, as experimentally demonstrated. The onset of rapid slip along initially quiescent frictional interfaces, the process of `earthquake nucleation', and dissipative spatiotemporal slippage dynamics play important roles in a broad range of physical systems. Here we first show that interfaces described by generic friction laws feature stress-dependent steady-state slip pulse solutions, which are unstable in the quasi-1D approximation of thin elastic bodies. We propose that such unstable slip pulses of linear size $L^*$ and characteristic amplitude are `critical nuclei' for rapid slip in a non-equilibrium analogy to equilibrium first-order phase transitions, and quantitatively support this idea by dynamical calculations. Necking instabilities, in which tensile (extensional) deformation localizes into a small spatial region, are generic failure modes in elasto-viscoplastic materials. Materials in this very broad class --- including amorphous, crystalline, polycrystalline and other materials --- feature a predominantly elastic response at small stresses, plasticity onset at a rather well-defined yield stress and rate-dependence. Necking instabilities involve a unique coupling between the system's geometry and its constitutive behavior. We consider generic elasto-viscoplastic constitutive relations involving an internal-state field, which represents the structural evolution of the material during plastic deformation, and study necking in the long-wavelength approximation (sometimes termed the lubrication or slender-bar approximation). We derive a general expression for the largest time-dependent eigenvalue in an approximate WKB-like linear stability analysis, highlighting various basic physical effects involved in necking. This expression is then used to propose criteria for the onset of necking and more importantly for the emergence of strong localization. Applications to strain-softening amorphous plasticity, in the framework of the Shear-Transformation-Zone model, and to strain-hardening crystalline/polycrystalline plasticity, in the framework of the Kocks-Mecking model, are presented.
