Abstract

Inspired by real-life applications, mainly in hand-intensive manufacturing, the incorporation of learning effects into scheduling problems has garnered attention in recent years. This paper deals with the flowshop scheduling problem with a learning effect, when minimising the makespan. Four approaches to model the learning effect, well-known in the literature, are considered. Mathematical models are providing for each case. A solver allows us to find the optimal solution in small problem instances, while a Simulated Annealing algorithm is proposed to deal with large problem instances. In the latter, the initial solution is obtained using the well-known Nawaz-Enscore-Ham algorithm, and two local search operators are evaluated. Computational experiments are carried out using benchmark datasets from the literature. The Simulated Annealing algorithm shows a better result for learning approaches with fast learning effects as compared to slow learning effects. Finally, for industrial decision makers, some insights about how the learning effect model might affect the makespan minimisation flowshop scheduling problem are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study addresses a scheduling problem involving a single-machine with coupled-tasks and bi-objective optimisation considering simultaneously inventory and environmental waste. A Mixed Integer Linear Program representing the problem is first developed. Subsequently, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is presented, followed by numerical experiments on multiple instances. Pareto fronts are determined using the ϵ-constraint and weighted sum methods, and a trade-off point is selected according to a distance criterion. Numerical experiments on both small and large instances show near-optimal results for small instances, and considerably reduced computing times for large ones when using the GA. The results show that a compromise can be found, with a decrease in setup-related waste up to 36% for an increase of inventory of 12%. This will help decision-makers to better consider the environmental aspect when designing schedules, as well as reduce their production environmental impact and waste-management costs. However, when tasks are performed by humans, processing times can decrease when the resource improves productivity, for example as a result of the learning effect. Abstract

The standard literature on inventory modelling is rarely differentiating between the inventory records and the physical inventory. In the recent years, some empirical studies highlighted that errors and inventory perturbations may occur in the inventory system. Such errors result in a gap between what the informational system (IS) shows and what is actually available for sales and used to satisfy the demand. The impact of such errors is particularly important in a wholesaling/e-retailing context where customer’ demands are remotely satisfied based on the inventory records shown in theIS. These errors could be modelled by an additive or multiplicative structure depending on the link between the error variability and the ordered quantity. The aim of the paper is to extend the existing literature by developing an inventory framework that permits the analysis and the performance improvement of an inventory system subject to a multiplicative errors setting. The multiplicative and stochastic settings also known as the stochastically proportional modelling of errors is not well developed in the literature despite the fact that such an assumption bears considerable association with reality. We provide comprehensive analytical and numerical studies and we also complete our contribution by a comparison between the additive and the multiplicative error settings where we derive interesting managerial insights about the impact of wrongly modelling errors. Abstract

National audience; Nos travaux s'inscrivent dans le cadre de la production durable, et s'intéressent aux moyens de réduire les déchets générés par les changements de série grâce à un ordonnancement adapté. Dans cette présentation, on s'intéresse au problème de l'ordonnancement d'un ensemble de tâches couplées sur une machine unique. Chaque tâche est composée de plusieurs opérations (qui peuvent être de nature différente) avec, le cas échéant, un temps inter-opératoire minimum entre les opérations d'une même tâche, et des dates d'échéance qui doivent être respectées. Il s'agit d'un problème d'optimisation bi-objectif cherchant à minimiser l'avance des tâches sur leur date d'échéance (minimisation des coûts d'immobilisation) ainsi que le nombre total de changements de série entre deux opérations consécutives (minimisation des processus générant des déchets, et donc du coût de leur traitement). Le problème est modélisé en programmation linéaire à variables mixtes. On cherche à montrer qu'il est possible de réduire les déchets sans dégrader les indicateurs économiques, afin de faciliter la prise de décision des gestionnaires de production.
