2. Pseudo-critical clusterization in nuclear multifragmentation

Abstract

In this contribution we show that the biggest fragment charge distribution in central collisions of 129Xe+natSn leading to multifragmentation is an admixture of two asymptotic distributions observed for the lowest and highest bombarding energies. The evolution of the relative weights of the two components with bombarding energy is shown to be analogous to that observed as a function of time for the largest cluster produced in irreversible aggregation for a finite system. We infer that the size distribution of the largest fragment in nuclear multifragmentation is also characteristic of the time scale of the process, which is largely determined by the onset of radial expansion in this energy range.

Abstract

Cosmic dusts are mostly responsible for polarization of the light that we ob- serve from astrophysical objects. They also lead to color-extinction, thermal re- emission and other scattering related phenomena. Dusts are made of small particles which are characterised by their size (radius), composition (matter), and structure (morphology, including porosity). In the present work, we address the question of the role of the dust particle porosity on light polarization and color, using Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA) light scattering code. To answer this question, we developed an algorithm to generate solid particles of arbitrary values of porosity. In brief, the model considers a given homogeneous structure made of touching dipoles. The dipoles are randomly removed one by one, such that the remaining structure remains connected. We stop the removal process when the desired poros- ity is obtained. Then we study the optical properties of the porous particle. That way, we show how the proper value of the porosity affects the polarization and color of the light scattered by these porous particles. In addition to polarization, porosity has important effects on photometric color. Considering an important application, we emphasize the possible role of the porosity of the cometary dust particles on polarization and color of the light scattered by cometary coma., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Distributions of the largest fragment charge, Zmax, in multifragmentation reactions around the Fermi energy can be decomposed into a sum of a Gaussian and a Gumbel distribution, whereas at much higher or lower energies one or the other distribution is asymptotically dominant. We demonstrate the same generic behavior for the largest cluster size in critical aggregation models for small systems, in or out of equilibrium, around the critical point. By analogy with the time-dependent irreversible aggregation model, we infer that Zmax distributions are characteristic of the multifragmentation time-scale, which is largely determined by the onset of radial expansion in this energy range., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters on 8/4/2013

Abstract

We discuss the scaling laws of both the charged fragments multiplicity fluctuations and the charge of the largest fragment fluctuations for Xe+Sn collisions in the range of bombarding energies between 25 MeV/A and 50 MeV/A. We show close to E_{lab}=32 MeV/A the transition in the fluctuation regime of the charge of the largest fragment which is compatible with the transition from the ordered to disordered phase of excited nuclear matter. The size (charge) of the largest fragment is closely related to the order parameter characterizing this process., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

12. New Families of Scaling Multiparticle Distributions

Abstract

Recently equations for the generating functional in the perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) have been extended by including the non-perturbative dissipation in QCD jets. The resulting equations have been solved rigorously and new family of scaling solutions, the so-called delta - scaling, generalizing the well-known Kubo-Nielsen-Olesen scaling law for hadron multiplicity distributions have been found. The relevance of delta - scaling is discussed in the Landau - Ginzburg theory of phase transitions. 13. Moment scaling at the sol - gel transition

Abstract

Two standard models of sol-gel transition are revisited here from the point of view of their fluctutations in various moments of both the mass-distribution and the gel-mass. Bond-percolation model is an at-equilibrium system and undergoes a static second-order phase transition, while Monte-Carlo Smoluchowski model is an off-equilibrium one and shows a dynamical critical phenomenon. We show that the macroscopic quantities can be splitted into the three classes with different scaling properties of their fluctuations, depending on wheather they correspond to : (i) non-critical quantities, (ii) critical quantities or to (iii) an order parameter. All these three scaling properties correspond to a single form : $^{\delta} P(M) = \Phi ((M-)/^{\delta})$, with the values of $\delta$ respectively : =1/2 (regime (i)), \neq 1/2 and 1 (regime (ii)), and =1 (regime (iii)). These new scalings are very robust and, in particular, they do not depend on the precise form of an Hamiltonian., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Chromosome substitution lines (CSLs) are tentatively supreme resources to investigate non-allelic genetic interactions. However, the difficulty of generating such lines in most species largely yielded imperfect CSL panels, prohibiting a systematic dissection of epistasis. Here, we present the development and use of a unique and complete panel of CSLs inArabidopsis thaliana, allowing the full factorial analysis of epistatic interactions. A first comparison of reciprocal single chromosome substitutions revealed a dependency of QTL detection on different genetic backgrounds. The subsequent analysis of the complete panel of CSLs enabled the mapping of the genetic interactors and identified multiple two- and three-way interactions for different traits. Some of the detected epistatic effects were as large as any observed main effect, illustrating the impact of epistasis on quantitative trait variation. We, therefore, have demonstrated the high power of detection and mapping of genome-wide epistasis, confirming the assumed supremacy of comprehensive CSL sets.One sentence summaryDevelopment of a complete panel of chromosome substitution lines enables high power mapping of epistatic interactions inArabidopsis thaliana.

Abstract

[EN] Cosmic dust particles are mostly responsible for polarization of the light that we observe from astrophysical objects. They also lead to color-extinction, thermal re-emission and other scattering related phenomena. Micrometric dust particles are often made of smaller constituent (nanometric grains). They are characterized by their size (average radius), chemical composition and morphology (including porosity). In the present work, we address the question of the role of the dust particle porosity on light polarization and color, using Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA) light scattering code. To this purpose, we develop an algorithm to generate dust particles of arbitrary values of porosity. In brief, starting from a compact spherical ensemble of dipoles,randomly the dipoles are removed one by one, such that the remaining dipoles remain connected within their neighbours. We stop the removal process when the desired porosity is obtained. Then we compute and study the optical properties of the porous dust particle. The main objective of this paper is to develop a tool to generate dust particles with an arbitrary value of porosity and to study the effect of porosity on their light scattering properties. As a possible application, we simulate cometary polarization and color values which grossly match with the observed ones for the comet 1P/Halley, leaving scope for future work.

Comet Hartley 2 dust was observed 21 days before perihelion and eight days after, at the time of the EPOXI mission. The scattered light by the dust was studied by a polarimetric imaging technique in different wavelengths (visible and near infrared).

Abstract

Comet nuclei have a low density ( 500 kg.m-3, e.g. [1]) and are easily disrupted. In situ studies have unveiled surface features hinting at a pervasive internal layered structure on 9P/Tempel 1 [2]. This indicates that specific processes occurred during its formation and lifetime. Our simulations describe the internal structure of comet nuclei due to their formation as aggregates of cometesimals [3]. The simulations take into account the amount of kinetic energy dissipated by sintering processes, the ejection of material during the impact and the variation in density and sizes of the cometesimals. From 10000 to 100000 cometesimals are considered with sizes down to tens of meters. A cohesive strength and density layering of the material occurs, leading to a highly cohesive core with less cohesive outer layers. The thickness of such layers is comparable to the larger layers observed at 9P/Tempel 1 ( 200 m). The porosity also increases with the distance to the centre of the nucleus. Abstract

We discuss the universal scaling laws of order parameter fluctuations in any system in which the second-order critical behavior can be identified. These scaling laws can be derived rigorously for equilibrium systems when combined with the finite-size scaling analysis.
