The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in bulk La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under high hydrostatic pressure and, more recently, biaxial compression in epitaxial thin films has ignited significant interest in understanding the interplay between atomic and electronic structure in these compounds. Subtle changes in the nickel-oxygen bonding environment are thought to be key drivers for stabilizing superconductivity, but specific details of which bonds and which modifications are most relevant remains so far unresolved. While direct, atomic-scale structural characterization under hydrostatic pressure is beyond current experimental capabilities, static stabilization of strained La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ films provides a platform well-suited to investigation with new picometer-resolution electron microscopy methods. Here, we use multislice electron ptychography to directly measure the atomic-scale structural evolution of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ thin films across a wide range of biaxial strains tuned via substrate. By resolving both the cation and oxygen sublattices, we study strain-dependent evolution of atomic bonds, providing the opportunity to isolate and disentangle the effects of specific structural motifs for stabilizing superconductivity. We identify the lifting of crystalline symmetry through modification of the nickel-oxygen octahedral distortions under compressive strain as a key structural ingredient for superconductivity. Rather than previously supposed $c$-axis compression, our results highlight the importance of in-plane biaxial compression in superconducting thin films, which suggests an alternative -- possibly cuprate-like -- understanding of the electronic structure. Identifying local regions of inhomogeneous oxygen stoichiometry and high internal strain near crystalline defects, we suggest potential pathways for improving the sharpness and temperature of the superconducting transition., Comment: 4 figures, 3 tables, 15 supplemental figures

By using a Ginzburg-Landau functional in the Gaussian approximation, we calculate the energy of superconducting fluctuations above the transition, at zero external magnetic field, of a system composed by a small number $N$ of parallel two-dimensional superconducting planes, each of them Josephson coupled to its first neighbour, with special focus in the $N=2$ and $3$ cases. This allows us to obtain expressions for the critical contributions to various observables (fluctuation specific heat and magnetic susceptibility and Aslamazov-Larkin paraconductivity). Our results suggest that these systems may display deviations from pure 2D behaviour and interesting crossover effects, with both similitudes and differences to those known to occur in infinite-layers superconductors. We calculate the effects of doping nanostructuration and the patterning of thin films of high-temperature superconductors (HTS) with the aim of optimizing their functionality as sensing materials for resistive transition-edge bolometer devices (TES). We focus, in particular, on spatial variations of the carrier doping into the CuO$_2$ layers due to oxygen off-stoichiometry, (that induce, in turn, critical temperature variations) and explore following two major cases of such structurations: First, the random nanoscale disorder intrinsically associated to doping levels that do not maximize the superconducting critical temperature; our studies suggest that this first simple structuration already improves some of the bolometric operational parameters with respect to the conventional, nonstructured HTS materials used until now. Secondly, we consider the imposition of regular arrangements of zones with different nominal doping levels (patterning); we find that such regular patterns may improve the bolometer performance even further. We find one design that improves, with respect to nonstructured HTS materials, both the saturation power and the operating temperature width by more than one order of magnitude. We study the critical fluctuations near the resistive transition of very thin films of high-temperature cuprate superconductors composed of a number $N$ of only a few unit cells of superconducting bilayers. For that, we solve the fluctuation spectrum of a Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau model for few-bilayers superconductors considering two alternating Josephson interlayer interaction strengths, and we obtain the corresponding paraconductivity above the transition. Then, we extend these calculations to temperatures below the transition through expressions for the Ginzburg number and Kosterlitz--Thouless-like critical region. When compared with previously available data in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ few-bilayers systems, with $N=1$ to $4$, our results seem to provide a plausible scenario for their critical regime., Comment: preprint version with 32 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, 1 appendix

Signatures of superconductivity under pressure have recently been reported in the bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and trilayer La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) nickelates with general chemical formula La$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{3n+1}$ ($n=$ number of perovskite layers along the $c$-axis). The emergence of superconductivity is always concomitant with a structural transition in which the octahedral tilts are suppressed causing an increase in the out-of-plane $d_{z^2}$ orbital overlap. Here, using first-principles calculations, we explore biaxial strain (both compressive and tensile) as a means to mimic the electronic structure characteristics of RP nickelates (up to $n=5$) under hydrostatic pressure. Our findings highlight that strain allows to decouple the structural and electronic structure effects obtained under hydrostatic pressure, with tensile strain reproducing the known electronic structure characteristics of the pressurized bilayer and trilayer compounds. Overall, strain represents a promising way to tune the electronic structure of RP nickelates and could be an alternative route to achieve superconductivity in this family of materials.

We calculate the effects of carrier-density structuration and patterning on thin films of the cuprate superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, in order to optimize its functional characteristics as sensing material for resistive transition-edge bolometers at liquid-He temperature. We perform finite-element computations considering two major contributions to structuration: The intrinsic random nanoscale disorder associated to carrier density nonstoichiometry, plus the imposition of regular arrangements of zones with different nominal carrier densities. Using ad-hoc seek algorithms, we obtain various structuration designs that markedly improve the bolometric performance, mainly the saturation power and dynamic range. Superconductivity in infinite layer nickelates Nd1-xSrxNiO2 has so far been achieved only in thin films raising questions on the role of substrates and interfaces. Given the challenges associated with their synthesis it is imperative to identify their intrinsic properties. We use Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) to investigate the influence of the SrTiO3 capping layer on the excitations of Nd1-xSrxNiO2 (x = 0 and 0.2). Spin excitations are observed in parent and 20% doped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 regardless of capping, proving that magnetism is intrinsic to infinite-layer nickelates and appears in a significant fraction of their phase diagram. In parent and superconducting Nd1-xSrxNiO2, the spin excitations are slightly hardened in capped samples compared to the non-capped ones. Additionally, a weaker Ni - Nd charge transfer peak at ~ 0.6 eV suggests that the hybridization between Ni 3d and Nd 5d orbitals is reduced in capped samples. From our data, capping induces only minimal differences in Nd1-xSrxNiO2 and we phenomenologically discuss these differences based on the reconstruction of the SrTiO3 - NdNiO2 interface and other mechanisms such as crystalline disorder., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We employ correlated density-functional theory methods (DFT + Hubbard $U$) to investigate the spin-density wave state of the bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) nickelate La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ which becomes superconducting under pressure. We predict that the ground state of this bilayer RP material is a single spin-charge stripe phase with in-plane up$^\prime$/up/down$^\prime$/down diagonal stripes with up$^\prime$/down$^\prime$ being low spin (formally Ni$^{3+}$: $d^7$) and up/down being high spin (formally Ni$^{2+}$: $d^8$). The main feature of this solution (that is insulating even at $U=0$) is the dominant role of $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ bands around the Fermi level, which would become doped with the introduction of electrons via oxygen vacancies. In spite of the similarity with cuprates in terms of the dominant role of $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ bands, some differences are apparent in the magnetic ground state of La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$: the antiferromagnetic out-of-plane coupling within the bilayer (linked to the $d_{z^2}$ orbitals forming a spin-singlet-like configuration) is found to be the dominant one while in-plane interactions are reduced due to the stripe order of the ground state. With pressure, this striped magnetic ground state remains similar in nature but the increase in bandwidth quickly transitions La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ into a metallic state with all the activity close to the Fermi level involving, to a large extent, $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals. This is reminiscent of the cuprates and may provide key insights into how superconductivity arises in this material under pressure., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We employ a density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory framework to investigate the correlated electronic structure of the alternating single-layer trilayer (1313) polymorph of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure. At ambient pressure, the single-layer is in a Mott insulating regime and the low-energy physics is dominated by the trilayer block. Under pressure, the gap in the single-layer block closes due to orbital-selective physics, enabling charge transfer into the trilayer block. This change in effective doping of the trilayer block is likely linked to the higher T$_c$ obtained in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$-1313 ($\sim$ 80 K) when compared to the nominal trilayer La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ ($\sim$ 30 K). We conclude that correlation-driven layer differentiation is crucial in the La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$-1313 polymorph and that its low-energy physics aligns closely with the trilayer La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ compound (in spite of the apparent differences in nominal filling) rather than with the conventional bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Transition metal dihalides (MX$_2$, M= transition metal, X= halide) have attracted much attention recently due to their intriguing low-dimensional magnetic properties. Particular focus has been placed in this family in the context of multiferroicity -- a common occurrence in MX$_2$ compounds that adopt non-collinear magnetic structures. One example of helimagnetic multiferroic material in the dihalide family is represented by NiBr$_2$. Here, we study the evolution of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of this material under pressure using first-principles calculations combined with Monte Carlo simulations. Our results indicate there is significant magnetic frustration in NiBr$_2$ due to the competing interactions arising from its underlying triangular lattice. This magnetic frustration increases with pressure and is at the origin of the helimagnetic order. Further, pressure causes a sizable increase in the interlayer interactions. Our Monte Carlo simulations show that a large (3-fold) increase in the helimagnetic transition temperature can be achieved at pressures of around 15 GPa. This indicates that hydrostatic pressure can indeed be used as a tuning knob to increase the magnetic transition temperature of NiBr$_2$.

Motivated by the discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates RNiO$_2$ (R= rare-earth), and the subsequent enhancement of their T$_c$ with pressure, we investigate the evolution of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of this family of materials via first-principles calculations employing hydrostatic and chemical pressure as tuning knobs. Overall, our analysis shows that pressure tends to increase the R-$5d$ self-doping effect, as well as the Ni-$d _{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ bandwidth, the $e_g$ energy splitting, the charge transfer energy, and the superexchange ($J$). Using the energy scale of $J$ as a predictor of superconducting tendencies, we anticipate that pressure can indeed be a feasible means to further increase the T$_c$ in this family of materials., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

A key open question in the study of layered superconducting nickelate films is the role that hydrogen incorporation into the lattice plays in the appearance of the superconducting state. Due to the challenges of stabilizing highly crystalline square planar nickelate films, films are prepared by the deposition of a more stable parent compound which is then transformed into the target phase via a topotactic reaction with a strongly reducing agent such as CaH$_2$. Recent studies, both experimental and theoretical, have introduced the possibility that the incorporation of hydrogen from the reducing agent into the nickelate lattice may be critical for the superconductivity. In this work, we use secondary ion mass spectrometry to examine superconducting La$_{1-x}$X$_x$NiO$_2$ / SrTiO$_3$ (X = Ca and Sr) and Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ / NdGaO$_3$ films, along with non-superconducting NdNiO$_2$ / SrTiO$_3$ and (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$ / SrTiO$_3$. We find no evidence for extensive hydrogen incorporation across a broad range of samples, including both superconducting and non-superconducting films. Theoretical calculations indicate that hydrogen incorporation is broadly energetically unfavorable in these systems, supporting our conclusion that hydrogen incorporation is not generally required to achieve a superconducting state in layered square-planar nickelates., Comment: 23 pages, 21 figures (including supplemental information)

Motivated by the recent observation of superconductivity in the pressurized trilayer La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) nickelate, we explore its structural, electronic, and magnetic properties as a function of hydrostatic pressure from first-principles calculations. We find that in both the bilayer and trilayer nickelates, an orthorhombic(monoclinic)-to-tetragonal transition under pressure takes place concomitantly with the onset of superconductivity. The electronic structure of La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ can be understood using a molecular trimer basis wherein $n$ molecular subbands arise as the $d_{z^2}$ orbitals hybridize strongly along the $c$-axis within the trilayer. The magnetic tendencies indicate that the ground state at ambient pressure is formed by nonmagnetic inner planes and stripe-ordered outer planes that are antiferromagnetically coupled along the $c$ axis, resulting in an unusual $\uparrow$, 0, $\downarrow$ stacking that is consistent with the spin density wave model suggested by neutron diffraction. Such a state is destabilized by the pressures wherein superconductivity arises. Despite the presence of $d_{z^2}$ states at the Fermi level, the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals also play a key role in the electronic structure of La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$. This active role of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ states in the low-energy physics of the trilayer RP nickelate, together with the distinct electronic behavior of inner and outer planes, resembles the physics of multilayer cuprates., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

LaNiGa$_2$ is superconductor that breaks time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state without any known nearby magnetism. Recently, single crystals of LaNiGa$_2$ have been synthesized, revealing a nonsymmorphic Cmcm space group. Here, we report measurements of the electronic structure of LaNiGa$_2$ throughout the three-dimensional Brillouin zone (BZ) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our findings show broad consistency with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and provide evidence for degeneracies in the electronic structure that are predicted from the space group. The calculations also predict four Fermi surfaces which cross the purported nodal plane and should therefore form two degenerate pairs. We report evidence for those predicted symmetry enforced degeneracies as well as accidental near degeneracies throughout the BZ. These degeneracies and near-degeneracies may play a role in the pairing mechanism of LaNiGa$_2$. We report the discovery of a novel form of Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) oxide, which stands as the first example of long-range, coherent polymorphism in this class of inorganic solids. Rather than the well-known, uniform stacking of perovskite blocks ubiquitously found in RP phases, this newly discovered polymorph of the bilayer RP phase $La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}$adopts a novel stacking sequence in which single and trilayer blocks of $NiO_{6}$ octahedra alternate in a 1313 sequence. Crystals of this new polymorph are described in space group Cmmm, although we note evidence for a competing Imcm variant. Transport measurements at ambient pressure reveal metallic character with evidence of a charge density wave transition with onset at T = 134 K, which lies intermediate between that of the standard 2222 polymorph of $La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}$ (space group Amam) and the trilayer RP phase, $La_{4}Ni_{3}O_{10}$. The discovery of such polymorphism could reverberate to the expansive range of science and applications that rely on RP materials, particularly the recently reported signatures of superconductivity with $T_{c}$ as high as 80 K above 14 GPa in bilayer $La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}$., Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures

Twisted heterostructures of van der Waals materials have received much attention for their many remarkable properties. Here, we present a comprehensive theory of the long-range ordered magnetic phases of twisted bilayer $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ via a combination of first-principles calculations and atomistic simulations. While a monolayer exhibits zigzag antiferromagnetic order with three possible ordering wave vectors, a rich phase diagram is obtained for moir\'e superlattices as a function of interlayer exchange and twist angle. For large twist angles, each layer spontaneously picks a single zigzag ordering wave vector, whereas, for small twist angles, the ground state involves a combination of all three wave vectors in a complex hexagonal domain structure. This multi-domain order minimizes the interlayer energy while enduring the energy cost due to the domain wall formation. Our results indicate that magnetic frustration due to stacking-dependent interlayer exchange in moir\'e superlattices can be used to tune the magnetic ground state and enhance quantum fluctuations in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$.

Following the recent report of superconductivity in the bilayer nickelate La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under pressure, we present an analysis of the electronic and magnetic properties of La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ as a function of pressure using correlated density functional theory methods (DFT+$U$). At the bare DFT level, the electronic structure of the ambient and high-pressure phases of La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$are qualitatively similar. Upon including local correlation effects within DFT+$U$ and allowing for magnetic ordering, we find a delicate interplay between pressure and electronic correlations. Within the pressure-correlations phase space, we identify a region (at $U$ values consistent with constrained RPA) characterized by a high spin to low spin transition with increasing pressure. In contrast to previous theoretical work that only highlights the crucial role of the Ni-$d_{z^2}$ orbitals in this material, we find that the Ni-$d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ orbitals are active upon pressure and drive this rich magnetic landscape. Nickelate superconductors are outstanding materials with intriguing analogies with the cuprates. These analogies suggest that their superconducting mechanism may be unconventional, although this fundamental question is currently under debate. Here, we scrutinize the role played by electronic correlations in enhancing the electron-phonon coupling in the infinite-layer nickelates and the extent to which this may promote superconductivity. Specifically, we use $ab$ $initio$ many-body perturbation theory to perform state-of-the-art $GW$ and Eliashberg-theory calculations. We find that the electron-phonon coupling is effectively enhanced compared to density-functional-theory calculations. This enhancement may lead to low-$T_c$ superconductivity in the parent compounds already. However, it remains marginal in the sense that it cannot explain the record $T_c$s obtained with doping. This circumstance implies that conventional superconductivity is preempted by another pairing mechanism in the infinite-layer nickelates., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table + Supplementary Information

The van der Waals (vdW) type-II multiferroic NiI$_2$ has emerged as a candidate for exploring non-collinear magnetism and magnetoelectric effects in the 2D limit. Frustrated intralayer exchange interactions on a triangular lattice result in a helimagnetic ground state, with spin-induced improper ferroelectricity stabilized by the interlayer interactions. Here we investigate the magnetic and structural phase transitions in bulk NiI$_2$, using high-pressure Raman spectroscopy, optical linear dichroism, and x-ray diffraction. We obtain evidence for a significant pressure enhancement of the antiferromagnetic and helimagnetic transition temperatures, at rates of $\sim15.3/14.4$ K/GPa, respectively. These enhancements are attributed to a cooperative effect of pressure-enhanced interlayer and third-nearest-neighbor intralayer exchange. These results reveal a general path for obtaining high-temperature type-II multiferroicity via high pressures in vdW materials.

Transition metal dihalides have recently garnered interest in the context of two-dimensional van der Waals magnets as their underlying geometrically frustrated triangular lattice leads to interesting competing exchange interactions. In particular, NiI$_{2}$ is a magnetic semiconductor that has been long known for its exotic helimagnetism in the bulk. Recent experiments have shown that the helimagnetic state survives down to the monolayer limit with a layer-dependent magnetic transition temperature that suggests a relevant role of the interlayer coupling. Here, we explore the effects of hydrostatic pressure as a means to enhance this interlayer exchange and ultimately tune the electronic and magnetic response of NiI$_{2}$. We study first the evolution of the structural parameters as a function of external pressure using first-principles calculations combined with x-ray diffraction measurements. We then examine the evolution of the electronic structure and magnetic exchange interactions via first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the leading interlayer coupling is an antiferromagnetic second-nearest neighbor interaction that increases monotonically with pressure. The ratio between isotropic third- and first-nearest neighbor intralayer exchanges, which controls the magnetic frustration and determines the magnetic propagation vector $\mathbf{q}$ of the helimagnetic ground state, is also enhanced by pressure. As a consequence, our Monte Carlo simulations show a monotonic increase in the magnetic transition temperature, indicating that pressure is an effective means to tune the magnetic response of NiI$_{2}$.

Using a density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory methodology, we compute the many-body electronic structure and optical conductivity of NdNiO$_{2}$ under the influence of large scattering rates on the Nd($5d$) bands and including dynamical interactions on the Nd($5d$) orbitals with shifts of the Nd-Ni $d$-level energy difference. We find a robust conducting pathway in the out-of-plane direction arising from strong hybridization between the Ni-$d_{z^2}$ and Nd($5d$) orbitals. This pathway can be ``short-circuited'' if this hybridization is suppressed through large electronic scattering rates but is not reduced to zero even by very large beyond-DFT shifts of the Nd-Ni $d$-level energy splitting. The computed in-plane conductivity for NdNiO$_{2}$ predicts the material to be a ``good metal'' in contrast to experiments indicating the material is a ``bad metal'' or ``weak insulator''. Our results motivate future experiments measuring the $c$-axis resistivity as a proxy for the spectator bands and suggests the essential difference between the infinite-layer nickelates and the cuprates is dimensionality of their electronic structures., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The layered square-planar nickelates, Nd$_{n+1}$Ni$_{n}$O$_{2n+2}$, are an appealing system to tune the electronic properties of square-planar nickelates via dimensionality; indeed, superconductivity was recently observed in Nd$_{6}$Ni$_{5}$O$_{12}$ thin films. Here, we investigate the role of epitaxial strain in the competing requirements for the synthesis of the $n=3$ Ruddlesden-Popper compound, Nd$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{10}$, and subsequent reduction to the square-planar phase, Nd$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$. We synthesize our highest quality Nd$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{10}$ films under compressive strain on LaAlO$_{3}$ (001), while Nd$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{10}$ on NdGaO$_{3}$ (110) exhibits tensile strain-induced rock salt faults but retains bulk-like transport properties. A high density of extended defects forms in Nd$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{10}$ on SrTiO$_{3}$ (001). Films reduced on LaAlO$_{3}$ become insulating and form compressive strain-induced $c$-axis canting defects, while Nd$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$ films on NdGaO$_{3}$ are metallic. This work provides a pathway to the synthesis of Nd$_{n+1}$Ni$_{n}$O$_{2n+2}$ thin films and sets limits on the ability to strain engineer these compounds via epitaxy.

This paper presents a simple formalism for calculating X-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) that has as input orbital-resolved density of states from a single-particle or many-body \textit{ab initio} calculation and is designed to capture itinerant-like features. We use this formalism to calculate both the XAS and RIXS with input from DFT and DFT+DMFT for the recently studied reduced valence nickelates $R_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ and $R$NiO$_2$ ($R$ a rare earth), and these results are then contrasted with those for the cuprate CaCuO$_2$ and the unreduced nickelate $R_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$. In contrast to the unreduced $R_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, the reduced valence nickelates as well as the cuprate show strong orbital polarization due to the dominance of $x^2-y^2$ orbitals for the unoccupied $3d$ states. We also reproduce two key aspects of a recent RIXS experiment for $R_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$: (i) a charge transfer feature between $3d$ and oxygen $2p$ states whose energy we find to decrease as one goes from $R$NiO$_2$ to $R_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ to the cuprate, and (ii) an energy-dependent polarization reversal of the fluorescence line that arises from hybridization of the unoccupied $z^2$ states with $R$ 5d states. We end with some implications of our results for the nature of the $3d$ electrons in reduced valence nickelates.

Long viewed as passive elements, antiferromagnetic materials have emerged as promising candidates for spintronic devices due to their insensitivity to external fields and potential for high-speed switching. Recent work exploiting spin and orbital effects has identified ways to electrically control and probe the spins in metallic antiferromagnets, especially in noncollinear or noncentrosymmetric spin structures. The rare earth nickelate NdNiO3 is known to be a noncollinear antiferromagnet where the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering is concomitant with a transition to an insulating state. Here, we find that for low electron doping, the magnetic order on the nickel site is preserved while electronically a new metallic phase is induced. We show that this metallic phase has a Fermi surface that is mostly gapped by an electronic reconstruction driven by the bond disproportionation. Furthermore, we demonstrate the ability to write to and read from the spin structure via a large zero-field planar Hall effect. Superconducting nickelates are a new family of strongly correlated electron materials with a phase diagram closely resembling that of superconducting cuprates. While analogy with the cuprates is natural, very little is known about the metallic state of the nickelates, making these comparisons difficult. We probe the electronic dispersion of thin-film superconducting 5-layer ($n=5$) and metallic 3-layer ($n=3$) nickelates by measuring the Seebeck coefficient, $S$. We find a temperature-independent and negative $S/T$ for both $n=5$ and $n=3$ nickelates. These results are in stark contrast to the strongly temperature-dependent $S/T$ measured at similar electron filling in the cuprate La$_{1.36}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.24}$CuO$_4$. The electronic structure calculated from density functional theory can reproduce the temperature dependence, sign, and amplitude of $S/T$ in the nickelates using Boltzmann transport theory. This demonstrates that the electronic structure obtained from first-principles calculations provides a reliable description of the Fermiology of superconducting nickelates, and suggests that, despite indications of strong electronic correlations, there are well-defined quasiparticles in the metallic state. Finally, we explain the differences in the Seebeck coefficient between nickelates and cuprates as originating in strong dissimilarities in impurity concentrations. Our study demonstrates that the high elastic scattering limit of the Seebeck coefficient reflects only the underlying band structure of a metal, analogous to the high magnetic field limit of the Hall coefficient. Most proposals in the anomaly detection field focus exclusively on the detection stage, specially in the recent deep learning approaches. While providing highly accurate predictions, these models often lack transparency, acting as "black boxes". This criticism has grown to the point that explanation is now considered very relevant in terms of acceptability and reliability. In this paper, we addressed this issue by inspecting the ADMNC (Anomaly Detection on Mixed Numerical and Categorical Spaces) model, an existing very accurate although opaque anomaly detector capable to operate with both numerical and categorical inputs. This work presents the extension EADMNC (Explainable Anomaly Detection on Mixed Numerical and Categorical spaces), which adds explainability to the predictions obtained with the original model. We preserved the scalability of the original method thanks to the Apache Spark framework. EADMNC leverages the formulation of the previous ADMNC model to offer pre hoc and post hoc explainability, while maintaining the accuracy of the original architecture. We present a pre hoc model that globally explains the outputs by segmenting input data into homogeneous groups, described with only a few variables. We designed a graphical representation based on regression trees, which supervisors can inspect to understand the differences between normal and anomalous data. Our post hoc explanations consist of a text-based template method that locally provides textual arguments supporting each detection. We report experimental results on extensive real-world data, particularly in the domain of network intrusion detection. The usefulness of the explanations is assessed by theory analysis using expert knowledge in the network intrusion domain.

The recent observation of superconductivity in an infinite-layer and quintuple-layer nickelate within the same $R_{n+1}$Ni$_{n}$O$_{2n+2}$ series ($R$ = rare-earth, $n=2-\infty$, with $n$ indicating the number of NiO$_{2}$ layers along the $c$-axis), unlocks their potential to embody a whole family of unconventional superconductors. Here, we systematically investigate the many-body electronic structure of the layered nickelates (with $n=2-6,\infty$) within a density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory framework and contrast it with that of the known superconducting members of the series and with the cuprates. We find that many features of the electronic structure are common to the entire nickelate series, namely, strongly correlated Ni-$d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ orbitals that dominate the low-energy physics, mixed Mott-Hubbard/charge-transfer characteristics, and $R$($5d$) orbitals acting as charge reservoirs. Interestingly, we uncover that the electronic structure of the layered nickelates is highly tunable as the dimensionality changes from quasi-two-dimensional to three-dimensional as $n \rightarrow \infty$. Specifically, we identify the tunable electronic features to be: the charge-transfer energy, presence of $R(5d)$ states around the Fermi level, and the strength of electronic correlations., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We present a comprehensive theory of the magnetic phases in monolayer nickel-based Janus dihalides (NiIBr, NiICl, NiBrCl) through a combination of first-principles calculations and atomistic simulations. Phonon band structure calculations and finite temperature molecular dynamics simulations show that Ni-dihalide Janus monolayers are stable. The parameters of the interacting spin Hamiltonian extracted from ab initio calculations show that nickel-dihalide Janus monolayers exhibit varying degrees of magnetic frustration together with a large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction due to their inherent inversion symmetry breaking. The atomistic simulations reveal a delicate interplay between these two competing magnetic interactions in giving rise to skyrmion formation.

The rare-earth nickelates possess a diverse set of collective phenomena including metal-to-insulator transitions, magnetic phase transitions, and, upon chemical reduction, superconductivity. Here, we demonstrate epitaxial stabilization of layered nickelates in the Ruddlesden-Popper form, Nd$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{3n+1}$, using molecular beam epitaxy. By optimizing the stoichiometry of the parent perovskite NdNiO$_3$, we can reproducibly synthesize the $n = 1 - 5$ member compounds. X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the O $K$ and Ni $L$ edges indicate systematic changes in both the nickel-oxygen hybridization level and nominal nickel filling from 3$d^8$ to 3$d^7$ as we move across the series from $n = 1$ to $n = \infty$. The $n = 3 - 5$ compounds exhibit weakly hysteretic metal-to-insulator transitions with transition temperatures that depress with increasing order toward NdNiO$_3$ ($n = \infty)$., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures with Supplemental Information

There are many contexts in which dyadic data are present. Social networks are a well-known example. In these contexts, pairs of elements are linked building a network that reflects interactions. Explaining why these relationships are established is essential to obtain transparency, an increasingly important notion. These explanations are often presented using text, thanks to the spread of the natural language understanding tasks. Our aim is to represent and explain pairs established by any agent (e.g., a recommender system or a paid promotion mechanism), so that text-based personalisation is taken into account. We have focused on the TripAdvisor platform, considering the applicability to other dyadic data contexts. The items are a subset of users and restaurants and the interactions the reviews posted by these users. We propose the PTER (Personalised TExt-based Reviews) model. We predict, from the available reviews for a given restaurant, those that fit to the specific user interactions. PTER leverages the BERT (Bidirectional Encoders Representations from Transformers) transformer-encoder model. We customised a deep neural network following the feature-based approach, presenting a LTR (Learning To Rank) downstream task. We carried out several comparisons of our proposal with a random baseline and other models of the state of the art, following the EXTRA (EXplanaTion RAnking) benchmark. Our method outperforms other collaborative filtering proposals.

We analyze the electronic structure of the recently synthesized higher-order nickelate Ruddlesden-Popper phases La$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{3n+1}$ ($n=4-6$) using first-principles calculations. For all materials, our results show large holelike Fermi surfaces with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ character that closely resemble those of optimally hole-doped cuprates. For higher values of $n$, extra non-cuprate-like bands of $d_{z^2}$ orbital character appear. These aspects highlight that this Ruddlesden-Popper series can provide a means to modify the electronic ground states of nickelates by tuning their dimensionality.
