A major unresolved question in the origin of life is whether there exists a continuous path from geochemical precursors to the majority of molecules in the biosphere, due in part to the autocatalytic nature of metabolic networks in modern-day organisms and high rates of extinction throughout Earth’s history. Here we simulated the emergence of ancient metabolic networks to identify a feasible path from simple geochemical precursors (e.g., phosphate, sulfide, ammonia, simple carboxylic acids, and metals) to contemporary biochemistry, using only known biochemical reactions and models of primitive coenzymes. We find that purine synthesis constitutes a bottleneck for metabolic expansion, and that non-autocatalytic phosphoryl coupling agents are sufficient to enable expansion from geochemistry to modern metabolic networks. Our model predicts distinct phases of metabolic evolution, characterized by the sequential emergence of key molecules (carboxylic acids, amino acids, sugars), purines/nucleotide cofactors (ATP, NAD+), flavins, and quinones, respectively. Early phases in the resulting expansion are associated with enzymes that are metal-dependent and structurally symmetric, consistent with models of early biochemical evolution. The production of quinones in the last phase of metabolic expansion permits oxygenic photosynthesis and the production of O2, leading to a >30% increase in biomolecules. These results reveal a feasible trajectory from simple geochemical precursors to the vast majority of core biochemistry.

The majority of anaerobic biogeochemical cycling occurs within marine sediments. To understand these processes, quantifying the distribution of active cells and gross metabolic activity is essential. We present an isotope model rooted in thermodynamics to draw quantitative links between cell-specific sulfate reduction rates and active sedimentary cell abundances. This model is calibrated using data from a series of continuous culture experiments with two strains of sulfate reducing bacteria (freshwater bacterium Desulfovibrio vulgaris strain Hildenborough, and marine bacterium Desulfovibrio alaskensis strain G-20) grown on lactate across a range of metabolic rates and ambient sulfate concentrations. We use a combination of experimental sulfate oxygen isotope data and nonlinear regression fitting tools to solve for unknown kinetic, step-specific oxygen isotope effects. This approach enables identification of key isotopic reactions within the metabolic pathway, and defines a new, calibrated framework for understanding oxygen isotope variability in sulfate. This approach is then combined with porewater sulfate/sulfide concentration data and diagenetic modeling to reproduce measured 18O/16O in porewater sulfate. From here, we infer cell-specific sulfate reduction rates and predict abundance of active cells of sulfate reducing bacteria, the result of which is consistent with direct biological measurements.

The origin and evolution of Earth’s biosphere were shaped by the physical and chemical histories of the oceans. Marine chemical sediments and altered oceanic crust preserve a geochemical record of these histories. Marine chemical sediments, for example, exhibit an increase in their 18O/16O ratio through time. The implications of this signal are ambiguous but are typically cast in terms of two endmember (but not mutually exclusive) scenarios. The oceans may have been much warmer in the deep past if they had an oxygen isotope composition similar to that of today. Alternatively, the nature of fluid–rock interactions (including the weathering processes associated with continental emergence) may have been different in the past, leading to an evolving oceanic oxygen isotope composition. Here we examine approximately 3.24-billion-year-old hydrothermally altered oceanic crust from the Panorama district in the Pilbara Craton of Western Australia as an alternative oxygen isotope archive to marine chemical sediments. We find that, at that time, seawater at Panorama had an oxygen isotope composition enriched in 18O relative to the modern ocean with a δ18O of 3.3 ± 0.1‰ VSMOW. We suggest that seawater δ18O may have decreased through time, in contrast to the large increases seen in marine chemical sediments. To explain this possibility, we construct an oxygen isotope exchange model of the geologic water cycle, which suggests that the initiation of continental weathering in the late Archaean, between 3 and 2.5 billion years ago, would have drawn down an 18O-enriched early Archaean ocean to δ18O values similar to those of modern seawater. We conclude that Earth’s water cycle may have gone through two separate phases of steady-state behaviour, before and after the emergence of the continents. The water cycle was in two different steady states, before and after continental emergence, as recorded in the decreasing oxygen isotope values of seawater since the Archaean, according to an inverse geochemical model of the oceanic crustal record.

Bacterial microcompartments (BMCs) are protein-encapsulated compartments found across at least 23 bacterial phyla. BMCs contain a variety of metabolic processes that share the commonality of toxic or volatile intermediates, oxygen-sensitive enzymes and cofactors, or increased substrate concentration for magnified reaction rates. These compartmentalized reactions have been computationally modeled to explore the encapsulated dynamics, ask evolutionary-based questions, and develop a more systematic understanding required for the engineering of novel BMCs. Many crucial aspects of these systems remain unknown or unmeasured, such as substrate permeabilities across the protein shell, feasibility of pH gradients, and transport rates of associated substrates into the cell. This review explores existing BMC models, dominated in the literature by cyanobacterial carboxysomes, and highlights potentially important areas for exploration.

Atmospheric O2 and CO2 levels inform us of the changes in chemical and biological environments, yet the history of atmospheric compositions, and pO2 in particular, is not well-constrained. The triple oxygen isotope (16,17,18O) composition of marine SO 4 2 − has been proposed to directly record the ratio pO2/pCO2 in the contemporaneous atmosphere. To resolve this atmospheric signal, both a precise measurement of the 17O composition of sulfate and a model with which to interpret the measurement are needed. Here we present precise measurements of the triple oxygen isotope composition of modern marine sulfate and then forward a novel sulfur cycle model that deconvolves the potential atmospheric and microbial inputs to this signal. Our interpretation of marine sulfate oxygen isotope composition provides a framework for calculating atmospheric composition, relative rates of biogeochemical activity, and can be applied to geologic records of marine sulfate to constrain the pO2/pCO2 ratio over time.

Measurements of triple oxygen isotope ratios in barite horizons within post-Marinoan cap carbonates have provided some of the most compelling evidence that the Marinoan glaciation was a Snowball Earth event. However, the origin of these barite horizons remains unresolved. To constrain the Ba sources, and thus formation mechanisms of these horizons, we analyzed the Ba isotope composition of post-Marinoan barite deposits from Northwest Canada, Northern Norway, Brazil and South China. We augment these analyses with a Ba isotope survey of almost 100 modern and ancient additional barite measurements, including samples from pelagic (or ‘marine’), hydrothermal, terrestrial, Proterozoic stratiform and cold seep environments. Unlike modern cold seep or terrestrial barites, we find that globally-distributed post-Marinoan barites exhibit a relatively narrow isotopic range, suggesting a well-mixed, effectively limitless Ba source. Moreover, post-Marinoan deposits exhibit a similar mean Ba isotope composition to modern marine barites, which we interpret as evidence of a marine Ba source. Considered alongside existing geochemical, geological, and new Ba isotope survey data, we conclude that Ba in barite horizons was sourced from a well-mixed, Ba-replete but SO4-poor reservoir that accumulated during the Marinoan Snowball Earth interval. This deep Ba reservoir was then transported upward—either by ocean circulation or dolomitization of underlying cap carbonates—and was brought into contact with continental weathering-derived sulfate in a post-glacial meltwater surface layer. Thus, in addition to providing a plausible mechanism for generating globally-synchronous deposition of post-Marinoan barite horizons that reconciles all existing geochemical and geological data, our results demonstrate the utility of Ba isotopes to interrogate the origin of enigmatic barite deposits throughout the sedimentary record.

The Proterozoic Eon spans Earth's middle age during which many important transitions occurred. These transitions include the oxygenation of the atmosphere, emergence of eukaryotic organisms and growth of continents. Since the sulfur and oxygen cycles are intricately linked to most surface biogeochemical processes, these transitions should be recorded in changes to the isotopic composition of marine and terrestrial sulfate minerals. Here we present oxygen (∆17O, δ18O) and sulfur (∆33S, δ34S) isotope records of Proterozoic sulfate from currently available data together with new measurements of 313 samples from 33 different formations bearing Earth's earliest unambiguous evaporites at 2.4 Ga through to Ediacaran aged deposits. This record depicts distinct intervals with respect to the expression of sulfate isotopes that are not completely captured by established intervals in the geologic timescale. The most salient pattern is the muted ∆17O signatures across the GOE, late Proterozoic and Ediacaran with values that are only slightly more negative than modern marine sulfate, contrasting with highly negative values across the mid-Proterozoic and Cryogenian. We combine these results with estimates of atmospheric composition to produce a gross primary production (GPP) curve for the Proterozoic. Through these results we argue that changes in GPP across Earth history likely help account for many of the changes in the Proterozoic Earth surface environment such as rising atmospheric oxygen, large fluctuations in the size of the marine sulfate reservoir and variations in the isotopic composition of sedimentary sulfate.

Although biological systems are more complex and can actively respond to their environment, an effective entry point to the development of a universal theory of biological stress is the physical concepts of stress and strain. If you apply stress to the end of a beam of steel, the strain will accumulate within that steel beam. If the stress is weak then the strain will disappear when the force is removed and the beam will return to its original state of form and functionality. If the stress is more severe, then the strain becomes permanent and the beam will be deformed, potentially losing some degree of functionality. In extremely stressful situations, the beam will break and lose most or all of its original functional capabilities. Although this stress–strain theory applies to the abiotic, stress and strain are also rules of life and directly relate to the form and function of living organisms. The main difference is that life can react and adjust to stress and strain to maintain homeostasis within a range of limits. Here, we summarize the rules of stress and strain in living systems ranging from microbes to multicellular organisms to ecosystems with the goal to identify common features that may underlie a universal biological theory of stress. We then propose to establish a range of experimental, observational, and analytical approaches to study stress across scales, including synthetic microbial communities that mimic many of the essential characteristics of living systems, thereby enabling a universal theory of biological stress to be experimentally validated without the constraints of timescales, ethics, or cost found when studying other species or scales of life. Although the range of terminology, theory, and methodology used to study stress and strain across the scales of life presents a formidable challenge to creating a universal theory of biological stress, working toward such a theory that informs our understanding of the simultaneous and interconnected unicellular, multicellular, organismal, and ecosystem stress responses is critical as it will improve our ability to predict how living systems respond to change, thus informing solutions to current and future environmental and human health challenges.

Evolutionary genetic studies have uncovered abundant evidence for genomic hotspots of phenotypic evolution, as well as biased patterns of mutations at those loci. However, the theoretical basis for this concentration of particular types of mutations at particular loci remains largely unexplored. In addition, historical contingency is known to play a major role in evolutionary trajectories, but has not been reconciled with the existence of such hotspots. For example, do the appearance of hotspots and the fixation of different types of mutations at those loci depend on the starting state and/or on the nature and direction of selection? Here, we use a computational approach to examine these questions, focusing the anthocyanin pigmentation pathway, which has been extensively studied in the context of flower color transitions. We investigate two transitions that are common in nature, the transition from blue to purple pigmentation and from purple to red pigmentation. Both sets of simulated transitions occur with a small number of mutations at just four loci and show strikingly similar peaked shapes of evolutionary trajectories, with the mutations of the largest effect occurring early but not first. Nevertheless, the types of mutations (biochemical vs. regulatory) as well as their direction and magnitude are contingent on the particular transition. These simulated color transitions largely mirror findings from natural flower color transitions, which are known to occur via repeated changes at a few hotspot loci. Still, some types of mutations observed in our simulated color evolution are rarely observed in nature, suggesting that pleiotropic effects further limit the trajectories between color phenotypes. Overall, our results indicate that the branching structure of the pathway leads to a predictable concentration of evolutionary change at the hotspot loci, but the types of mutations at these loci and their order is contingent on the evolutionary context.

Carboxysomes evolved due to rising O2, not falling CO2, enabling planktic cyanobacteria to flourish during earth’s middle age., Ancestral cyanobacteria are assumed to be prominent primary producers after the Great Oxidation Event [≈2.4 to 2.0 billion years (Ga) ago], but carbon isotope fractionation by extant marine cyanobacteria (α-cyanobacteria) is inconsistent with isotopic records of carbon fixation by primary producers in the mid-Proterozoic eon (1.8 to 1.0 Ga ago). To resolve this disagreement, we quantified carbon isotope fractionation by a wild-type planktic β-cyanobacterium (Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002), an engineered Proterozoic analog lacking a CO2-concentrating mechanism, and cyanobacterial mats. At mid-Proterozoic pH and pCO2 values, carbon isotope fractionation by the wild-type β-cyanobacterium is fully consistent with the Proterozoic carbon isotope record, suggesting that cyanobacteria with CO2-concentrating mechanisms were apparently the major primary producers in the pelagic Proterozoic ocean, despite atmospheric CO2 levels up to 100 times modern. The selectively permeable microcompartments central to cyanobacterial CO2-concentrating mechanisms (“carboxysomes”) likely emerged to shield rubisco from O2 during the Great Oxidation Event.

The global biosphere is commonly assumed to have been less productive before the rise of complex eukaryotic ecosystems than it is today1. However, direct evidence for this assertion is lacking. Here we present triple oxygen isotope measurements (∆17O) from sedimentary sulfates from the Sibley basin (Ontario, Canada) dated to about 1.4 billion years ago, which provide evidence for a less productive biosphere in the middle of the Proterozoic eon. We report what are, to our knowledge, the most-negative ∆17O values (down to −0.88‰) observed in sulfates, except for those from the terminal Cryogenian period2. This observation demonstrates that the mid-Proterozoic atmosphere was distinct from what persisted over approximately the past 0.5 billion years, directly reflecting a unique interplay among the atmospheric partial pressures of CO2 and O2 and the photosynthetic O2 flux at this time3. Oxygenic gross primary productivity is stoichiometrically related to the photosynthetic O2 flux to the atmosphere. Under current estimates of mid-Proterozoic atmospheric partial pressure of CO2 (2–30 times that of pre-anthropogenic levels), our modelling indicates that gross primary productivity was between about 6% and 41% of pre-anthropogenic levels if atmospheric O2 was between 0.1–1% or 1–10% of pre-anthropogenic levels, respectively. When compared to estimates of Archaean4–6 and Phanerozoic primary production7, these model solutions show that an increasingly more productive biosphere accompanied the broad secular pattern of increasing atmospheric O2 over geologic time8.

Dissolved sulfate is a crucial electron acceptor for the subsurface biosphere, particularly for the living microbial ecosystems in the long-isolated (on the order of millions to billions of years) deep subsurface fracture waters in Precambrian cratons, e.g., in the Witwatersrand Basin of the Kaapvaal Craton, South Africa. Aiming to understand the role of sulfate in the sustainability of the subsurface habitat and the spatial extent of the terrestrial subsurface biosphere, we carried out a basin-scale examination on the sources and producing mechanisms of dissolved sulfur (sulfate and sulfide) in the subsurface fracture waters in the Witwatersrand Basin using multiple sulfur isotopes (32,33,34,36S) and oxygen isotopes (16,18O). Dissolved sulfates in 14 fracture water samples collected from 900 to 3,413 meters below the surface at 6 sites show isotopic ranges from −5.3‰ to +19.4‰ for δ34S, −0.40‰ to +0.50‰ for Δ33S, and −1.1‰ to +10.9‰ for δ18O. These isotopic signatures are distinct to those of the sulfate minerals (e.g., the carbonate-associated sulfate in local Transvaal Supergroup dolomite sequences: δ34S = +31.4‰ to +39.2‰; Δ33S = −0.01‰ to +0.16‰), but identical to those of the sulfide minerals in the host rocks. This indicates that the dissolved sulfate in the fracture waters were dominantly generated by in situ oxidation of sulfide minerals at basin scale, although mixing of a small amount of surface sulfate at some sites cannot be completely ruled out. The dissolved sulfates in the less deep and less saline fracture waters are in oxygen isotope disequilibrium with their host waters, a surprising result given that the water residence times are orders of magnitude longer than the time required for oxygen isotope exchange to reach equilibrium. This implies that vigorous in situ sulfate production has occurred after the fracture waters were isolated. In contrast, the dissolved sulfate in the deeper, more saline waters are in apparent oxygen isotope equilibration or close to equilibration with their host waters. This might be attributed to a combined effect of faster oxygen isotope exchange between sulfate and water at higher temperatures, larger extent of sulfate reduction, and/or less efficient sulfate production. The dissolved sulfide in the fracture waters has similar Δ33S values but is 3.0‰ to 26.4‰ lower in δ34S than coexisting sulfate, suggesting that the dissolved sulfide is mostly generated from bacterial sulfate reduction, which is consistent with the widespread existence of sulfate-reducing bacteria down to >3.4 km below surface in the Witwatersrand Basin. Overall, these novel isotopic results demonstrate that geological processes can provide a steady long-term sulfate source in deep fracture fluids by in situ oxidation of sulfide minerals in their host rocks, and thereby a mechanism to sustain the terrestrial subsurface biosphere, even in deep, high-temperature, long-isolated water systems. Thus, sulfate as a terminal electron acceptor is not the limiting factor for the spatial expansion of terrestrial subsurface biosphere.

Mass-independent fractionation of sulfur isotopes (MIF-S) in Archaean sediments results from photochemical processing of atmospheric sulfur species in an oxygen-depleted atmosphere. Geological preservation of MIF-S provides evidence for microbial sulfate reduction (MSR) in low-sulfate Paleoarchaean (3.8–3.2 billion years ago (Ga)) and Neoarchaean (2.8–2.5 Ga) oceans, but the significance of MSR in Mesoarchaean (3.2–2.8 Ga) oceans is less clear. Here we present multiple sulfur and iron isotope data of early diagenetic pyrites from 2.97-Gyr-old stromatolitic dolomites deposited in a tidal flat environment of the Nsuze Group, Pongola Supergroup, South Africa. We identified consistently negative Δ33S values in pyrite, which indicates photochemical reactions under anoxic atmospheric conditions, but large mass-dependent sulfur isotope fractionations of ~30‰ in δ34S, identifying active MSR. Negative pyrite δ56Fe values (−1.31 to −0.88‰) record Fe oxidation in oxygen-bearing shallow oceans coupled with biogenic Fe reduction during diagenesis, consistent with the onset of local Fe cycling in oxygen oases ~3.0 Ga. We therefore suggest the presence of oxygenated near-shore shallow-marine environments with ≥5 μM sulfate at this time, in spite of the clear presence of an overall reduced Mesoarchaean atmosphere.

Dissimilatory sulfate reduction (DSR) has been a key process influencing the global carbon cycle, atmospheric composition and climate for much of Earth’s history, yet the energy metabolism of sulfate-reducing microbes remains poorly understood. Many organisms, particularly sulfate reducers, live in low-energy environments and metabolize at very low rates, requiring specific physiological adaptations. We identify one such potential adaptation—the electron carriers selected for survival under energy-limited conditions. Employing a quantitative biochemical-isotopic model, we find that the large S isotope fractionations (>55‰) observed in a wide range of natural environments and culture experiments at low respiration rates are only possible when the standard-state Gibbs free energy (ΔG′°) of all steps during DSR is more positive than −10 kJ mol−1. This implies that at low respiration rates, only electron carriers with modestly negative reduction potentials are involved, such as menaquinone, rubredoxin, rubrerythrin or some flavodoxins. Furthermore, the constraints from S isotope fractionation imply that ferredoxins with a strongly negative reduction potential cannot be the direct electron donor to S intermediates at low respiration rates. Although most sulfate reducers have the genetic potential to express a variety of electron carriers, our results suggest that a key physiological adaptation of sulfate reducers to low-energy environments is to use electron carriers with modestly negative reduction potentials.

Iron isotopes have been widely applied to investigate the redox evolution of Earth’s surface environments. However, it is still unclear whether iron cycling in the water column or during diagenesis represents the major control on the iron isotope composition of sediments and sedimentary rocks. Interpretation of isotopic data in terms of oceanic redox conditions is only possible if water column processes dominate the isotopic composition, whereas redox interpretations are less straightforward if diagenetic iron cycling controls the isotopic composition. In the latter scenario, iron isotope data is more directly related to microbial processes such as dissimilatory iron reduction. Here we present bulk rock iron isotope data from late Proterozoic marine shales from Svalbard, northwestern Canada, and Siberia, to better understand the controls on iron isotope fractionation in late Proterozoic marine environments. Bulk shales span a δ 56Fe range from −0.45 ‰ to +1.04 ‰ . Although δ 56Fe values show significant variation within individual stratigraphic units, their mean value is closer to that of bulk crust and hydrothermal iron in samples post-dating the ca. 717–660 Ma Sturtian glaciation compared to older samples. After correcting for the highly reactive iron content in our samples based on iron speciation data, more than 90% of the calculated δ 56Fe compositions of highly reactive iron falls in the range from ca. −0.8 ‰ to +3 ‰ . An isotope mass-balance model indicates that diagenetic iron cycling can only change the isotopic composition of highly reactive iron by 1 ‰ , suggesting that water column processes, namely the degree of oxidation of the ferrous seawater iron reservoir, control the isotopic composition of highly reactive iron. Considering a long-term decrease in the isotopic composition of the iron source to the dissolved seawater Fe(II) reservoir to be unlikely, we offer two possible explanations for the Neoproterozoic δ 56Fe trend. First, a decreasing supply of Fe(II) to the ferrous seawater iron reservoir could have caused the reservoir to decrease in size, allowing a higher degree of partial oxidation, irrespective of increasing environmental oxygen levels. Alternatively, increasing oxygen levels would have led to a higher proportion of Fe(II) being oxidized, without decreasing the initial size of the ferrous seawater iron pool. We consider the latter explanation as the most likely. According to this hypothesis, the δ 56Fe record reflects the redox evolution of Earth’s surface environments. δ 56Fe values in pre-Sturtian samples significantly heavier than bulk crust and hydrothermal iron imply partial oxidation of a ferrous seawater iron reservoir. In contrast, mean δ 56Fe values closer to that of hydrothermal iron in post-Sturtian shales reflects oxidation of a larger proportion of the ferrous seawater iron reservoir, and by inference, higher environmental oxygen levels. Nevertheless, significant iron isotopic variation in post-Sturtian shales suggest redox heterogeneity and possibly a dominantly anoxic deep ocean, consistent with results from recent studies using iron speciation and redox sensitive trace metals. However, the interpretation of generally increasing environmental oxygen levels after the Sturtian glaciation highlights the need to better understand the sensitivity of different redox proxies to incremental changes in oxygen levels to enable us to reconcile results from different paleoredox proxies.

The cycle of sulfur, an important volatile in Earth9s crust, is the driver of many significant processes such as biological evolution, climate change, and the formation of ore deposits. This study investigates the ancient cycle of volatiles by tracing the indelible signal of anomalous sulfur isotopes, expressed as Δ 33 S ≠ 0, to illuminate the pathway of sulfur recycling through magmatic arcs. We selected the ca. 2.0 Ga Glenburgh gold deposit in the Glenburgh magmatic arc of Western Australia as a natural laboratory for this study. High-precision multiple sulfur isotope analyses of samples from the Glenburgh gold deposit and surrounding granitoid rocks yield the largest known sulfur isotope anomalies (Δ 33 S up to +0.82‰) in rocks 2.33 Ga. Multiple sulfur isotope data are able to clarify a process that is cryptic to most other currently available data sets, showing that the cycling of volatiles and metals in arc settings occurs on very large scales, from the atmosphere-hydrosphere through to the lithosphere during crustal generation.

The Gypsum Hill (GH) springs on Axel Heiberg Island in the Canadian high Arctic are host to chemolithoautotrophic, sulfur-oxidizing streamers that flourish in the high Arctic winter in water temperatures from −1.3 to 7°C with ~8% salinity in a high Arctic winter environment with air temperatures commonly less than −40°C and an average annual air temperature of −15°C. Metagenome sequencing and binning of streamer samples produced a 96% complete Thiomicrorhabdus sp. metagenome-assembled genome representing a possible new species or subspecies. This is the most cold- and salt-extreme source environment for a Thiomicrorhabdus genome yet described. Metaproteomic and metatranscriptomic analysis attributed nearly all gene expression in the streamers to the Thiomicrorhabdus sp. and suggested that it is active in CO2 fixation and oxidation of sulfide to elemental sulfur. In situ geochemical and isotopic analyses of the fractionation of multiple sulfur isotopes determined the biogeochemical transformation of sulfur from its source in Carboniferous evaporites to biotic processes occurring in the sediment and streamers. These complementary molecular tools provided a functional link between the geochemical substrates and the collective traits and activity that define the microbial community's interactions within a unique polar saline habitat where Thiomicrorhabdus-dominated streamers form and flourish.

It has been hypothesized that the overall size of-or efficiency of carbon export from-the biosphere decreased at the end of the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) (ca. 2,400 to 2,050 Ma). However, the timing, tempo, and trigger for this decrease remain poorly constrained. Here we test this hypothesis by studying the isotope geochemistry of sulfate minerals from the Belcher Group, in subarctic Canada. Using insights from sulfur and barium isotope measurements, combined with radiometric ages from bracketing strata, we infer that the sulfate minerals studied here record ambient sulfate in the immediate aftermath of the GOE (ca. 2,018 Ma). These sulfate minerals captured negative triple-oxygen isotope anomalies as low as ∼ -0.8‰. Such negative values occurring shortly after the GOE require a rapid reduction in primary productivity of >80%, although even larger reductions are plausible. Given that these data imply a collapse in primary productivity rather than export efficiency, the trigger for this shift in the Earth system must reflect a change in the availability of nutrients, such as phosphorus. Cumulatively, these data highlight that Earth's GOE is a tale of feast and famine: A geologically unprecedented reduction in the size of the biosphere occurred across the end-GOE transition.

Various geochemical records suggest that atmospheric O 2 increased in the Ediacaran (635–541 Ma), broadly coincident with the emergence and diversification of large animals and increasing marine ecosystem complexity. Furthermore, geochemical proxies indicate that seawater sulfate levels rose at this time too, which has been hypothesized to reflect increased sulfide oxidation in marine sediments caused by sediment mixing of the newly evolved macrofauna. However, the exact timing of oxygenation is not yet understood, and there are claims for significant oxygenation prior to the Ediacaran. Furthermore, recent evidence suggests that physical mixing of sediments did not become important until the late Silurian. Here we report a multiple sulfur isotope record from a ca. 835–630 Ma succession from Svalbard, further supported by data from Proterozoic strata in Canada, Australia, Russia, and the United States, in order to investigate the timing of oxygenation. We present isotopic evidence for onset of globally significant bacterial sulfur disproportionation and reoxidative sulfur cycling following the 635 Ma Marinoan glaciation. Widespread sulfide oxidation helps to explain the observed first-order increase in seawater sulfate concentration from the earliest Ediacaran to the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary by reducing the amount of sulfur buried as pyrite. Expansion of reoxidative sulfur cycling to a global scale also indicates increasing environmental O 2 levels. Thus, our data suggest that increasing atmospheric O 2 levels may have played a role in the emergence of the Ediacaran macrofauna and increasing marine ecosystem complexity.

International audience; Scapolite is an important reservoir for volatiles in the deep crust and provides unique insights into the S isotope signatures at the mantle/crust interface. Here we document the first scapolite reference material (herein referred to as CB1) for in situ S isotope analysis. The chemical and isotopic composition of this euhedral, S-rich scapolite megacryst was characterized via LA-ICP-MS, EPMA, SIMS, and bulk fluorination gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The CB1 scapolite is isotopically homogeneous and our results show that crystal orientation does not affect in situ S isotope SIMS analysis. This makes CB1 an ideal primary calibration standard for in situ analysis of S isotope ratios (36S/32S, 34S/32S and 33S/32S) in scapolite. With this reference material in hand, we then applied in situ SIMS analysis of S isotopes for the first time on scapolite in granulite samples from the lower crust/upper mantle. The analysed sample suite comprises rocks from classic granulite xenolith locations in southeastern Australia, as well as a sample from the high-grade suture zone of the Dahomeyides in south-eastern Ghana. The results show that scapolites in the lower crust have δ34S values between ~− 0.5 and + 4 (‰ VCDT). These values fall within the range of S isotope signatures present in mantle rocks and provide no evidence for the recycling of seawater-derived S into the lower crust. We propose that scapolite formed during granulite facies metamorphism of igneous cumulates, where S was sourced from precursor igneous sulfides. Sulfur isotope heterogeneities between individual scapolite grains in some of the studied samples may reflect non-uniform S-isotope compositions of igneous S-phases, which precipitated from mantle-derived melt.

With growing interest in the application of in situ multiple sulfur isotope analysis to a variety of mineral systems, we report here the development of a suite of sulfur isotope standards for distribution relevant to magmatic, magmatic-hydrothermal, and hydrothermal ore systems. These materials include Sierra pyrite (FeS2), Nifty-b chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), Alexo pyrrhotite (Fe(1 − x)S), and VMSO pentlandite ((Fe,Ni)9S8) that have been chemically characterized by electron microprobe analysis, isotopically characterized for δ33S, δ34S, and δ36S by fluorination gas-source mass spectrometry, and tested for homogeneity at the micro-scale by secondary ion mass spectrometry. Beam-sample interaction as a function of crystallographic orientation is determined to have no effect on δ34S and Δ33S isotopic measurements of pentlandite. These new findings provided the basis for a case study on the genesis of the Long-Victor nickel-sulfide deposit located in the world class Kambalda nickel camp in the southern Kalgoorlie Terrane of Western Australia. Results demonstrate that precise multiple sulfur isotope analyses from magmatic pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite can better constrain genetic models related to ore-forming processes. Data indicate that pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite are in isotopic equilibrium and display similar Δ33S values + 0.2‰. This isotopic equilibrium unequivocally fingerprints the isotopic signature of the magmatic assemblage. The three sulfide phases show slightly variable δ34S values (δ34Schalcopyrite = 2.9 ± 0.3‰, δ34Spentlandite = 3.1 ± 0.2‰, and δ34Spyrrhotite = 3.9 ± 0.5‰), which are indicative of natural fractionation. Careful in situ multiple sulfur isotope analysis of multiple sulfide phases is able to capture the subtle isotopic variability of the magmatic sulfide assemblage, which may help resolve the nature of the ore-forming process. Hence, this SIMS-based approach discriminates the magmatic sulfur isotope signature from that recorded in metamorphic- and alteration-related sulfides, which may not be resolved during bulk rock fluorination analysis. The results indicate that, unlike the giant dunite-hosted komatiite systems that thermo-mechanically assimilated volcanogenic massive sulfides proximal to vents and display negative Δ33S values, the Kambalda ores formed in relatively distal environments assimilating abyssal sulfidic shales.

The discovery of hydrogen-rich waters preserved below the Earth's surface in Precambrian rocks worldwide expands our understanding of the habitability of the terrestrial subsurface. Many deep microbial ecosystems in these waters survive by coupling hydrogen oxidation to sulfate reduction. Hydrogen originates from water–rock reactions including serpentinization and radiolytic decomposition of water induced by decay of radioactive elements in the host rocks. The origin of dissolved sulfate, however, remains unknown. Here we report, from anoxic saline fracture waters ∼2.4 km below surface in the Canadian Shield, a sulfur mass-independent fractionation signal in dissolved sulfate. We demonstrate that this sulfate most likely originates from oxidation of sulfide minerals in the Archaean host rocks through the action of dissolved oxidants (for example, HO· and H2O2) themselves derived from radiolysis of water, thereby providing a coherent long-term mechanism capable of supplying both an essential electron donor (H2) and a complementary acceptor (sulfate) for the deep biosphere., Precambrian rocks host a deep hydrosphere, but where dissolved sulfate, crucial for microbial life, comes from is unclear. At 2.4 km depth in the Canadian shield, Li et al. find that oxidation of sulfides in the host rocks creates sulfate thus providing a long-term mechanism for the deep biosphere sulfate.

Assimilation by mafic to ultramafic magmas of sulfur-bearing country rocks is considered an important contributing factor to reach sulfide saturation and form magmatic Ni–Cu–platinum group element (PGE) sulfide deposits. Sulfur-bearing sedimentary rocks in the Archean are generally characterized by mass-independent fractionation of sulfur isotopes that is a result of atmospheric photochemical reactions, which produces isotopically distinct pools of sulfur. Likewise, low-temperature processing of iron, through biological and abiotic redox cycling, produces a range of Fe isotope values in Archean sedimentary rocks that is distinct from the range of the mantle and magmatic Fe isotope values. Both of these signals can be used to identify potential country rock assimilants and their contribution to magmatic sulfide deposits. We use multiple S and Fe isotopes to characterize the composition of the potential iron and sulfur sources for the sulfide liquids that formed the Hart deposit in the Shaw Dome area within the Abitibi greenstone belt in Ontario (Canada). The Hart deposit is composed of two zones with komatiite-associated Ni–Cu–PGE mineralization; the main zone consists of a massive sulfide deposit at the base of the basal flow in the komatiite sequence, whereas the eastern extension consists of a semi-massive sulfide zone located 12 to 25 m above the base of the second flow in the komatiite sequence. Low δ56Fe values and non-zero δ34S and Δ33S values of the komatiitic rocks and associated mineralization at the Hart deposit is best explained by mixing and isotope exchange with crustal materials, such as exhalite and graphitic argillite, rather than intrinsic fractionation within the komatiite. This approach allows tracing the extent of crustal contamination away from the deposit and the degree of mixing between the sulfide and komatiite melts. The exhalite and graphitic argillite were the dominant contaminants for the main zone of mineralization and the eastern extension zone of the Hart deposit, respectively. Critically, the extent of contamination, as revealed by multiple S and Fe isotope systematics, is greatest within the deposit and decreases away from it within the komatiite flow. This pattern points to a local source of crustal contamination for the mantle-derived komatiitic melt and a low degree of homogenization between the mineralization and the surrounding lava flow. Coupled S and Fe isotope patterns like those identified at the Hart deposit may provide a useful tool for assessing the potential of a komatiitic sequence to host Ni–Cu–(PGE).

This model indicated enzymatic kinetic diversity of Apr was more likely to correlate with sulfur fractionation than DsrB. Sulfur (5) isotope fractionation by sulfate-reducing microorganisms is a direct manifestation of their respiratory metabolism. This fractionation is apparent in the substrate (sulfate) and waste (sulfide) produced. The sulfate reducing metabolism responds to variability in the local environment, with the response determined by the underlying genotype, resulting in the expression of an "isotope phenotype". Sulfur isotope phenotypes have been used as a diagnostic tool for the metabolic activity of sulfate-reducing microorganisms in the environment. Our experiments with Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough (DvH) grown in batch culture suggest that the S isotope phenotype of sulfate respiring microbes may lag environmental changes on time scales that are longer than generational. When inocula from different phases of growth are assayed under the same environmental conditions, we observed that DvH exhibited different net apparent fractionations of up to -9 parts per thousand. The magnitude of fractionation was weakly correlated with physiological parameters but was strongly correlated to the age of the initial inoculum. The S isotope fractionation observed between sulfate and sulfide showed a positive correlation with respiration rate, contradicting the well-described negative dependence of fractionation on respiration rate. Quantitative modeling of S isotope fractionation shows that either a large increase (approximate to 50x) in the abundance of sulfate adenylyl transferase (Sat) or a smaller increase in sulfate transport proteins (approximate to 2x) is sufficient to account for the change in fractionation associated with past physiology. Temporal transcriptomic studies with DvH imply that expression of sulfate permeases doubles over the transition from early exponential to early stationary phase, lending support to the transport hypothesis proposed here. As it is apparently maintained for multiple generations (approximate to 1-6) of subsequent growth in the assay environment, we suggest that this fractionation effect acts as a sort of isotopic "memory" of a previous physiological and environmental state. Whatever its root cause, this physiological hysteresis effect can explain variations in fractionations observed in many environments. It may also enable new insights into life at energetic limits, especially if its historical footprint extends deeper than generational.

Viruses are ubiquitous drivers of microbial ecology and evolution and contribute to biogeochemical cycling. Attention to these attributes has been more substantial for marine viruses than viruses of other environments. Microscopy-based investigation of the viral communities from two cold, hypersaline Arctic springs was undertaken to explore the effects of these conditions on microbe-viral ecology. Sediments and water samples were collected along transects from each spring, from anoxic spring outlets through oxygenated downstream channels. Viral abundance, virus-microbe ratios and modelled virus-microbe contact rates were lower than comparable aqueous and sedimentary environments and most similar to deep subsurface sediments. No individual cell from either spring was visibly infected. Viruses in these springs appear to play a smaller role in controlling microbial populations through lytic activity than in marine water column or surface sedimentary environments. Relief from viral predation indicates the microbial communities are primarily controlled by nutrient limitation. The similarity of these springs to deep subsurface sediments suggests a biogeographic divide in viral replication strategy in marine sediments.

Triple oxygen isotopes within post-Marinoan barites have played an integral role in our understanding of Cryogenian glaciations. Reports of anomalous Δ O 17 values within cap carbonate hosted barites however have remained restricted to South China and Mauritania. Here we extend the Δ O 17 anomaly to northwest Canada with our new measurements of barites from the Ravensthroat cap dolostone with a minimum Δ O 17 value of − 0.75 ‰ . For the first time we pair triple oxygen with multiple sulfur isotopic data as a tool to identify the key processes that controlled the post-Marinoan sulfur cycle. We argue using a dynamic 1-box model that the observed isotopic trends both in northwest Canada and South China can be explained through the interplay between sulfide weathering, microbial sulfur cycling and pyrite burial. An important outcome of this study is a new constraint placed on the size of the post-Marinoan sulfate reservoir (≈0.1% modern), with a maximum concentration of less than 10% modern. Through conservative estimates of sulfate fluxes from sulfide weathering and under a small initial sulfate reservoir, we suggest that observed isotopic trends are the product of a dynamic sulfur cycle that saw both the addition and removal of the Δ O 17 anomaly over four to five turnovers of the post-Marinoan marine sulfate reservoir.

Age and sulfur isotope composition of the Prutivka intrusion (the 1.78 Ga Prutivka-Novogol large igneous province in Sarmatia)

We present a new set of high precision measurements of relative 33S/32S, 34S/32S, and 36S/32S values in lunar mare basalts. The measurements are referenced to the Vienna-Canyon Diablo Troilite (V-CDT) scale, on which the international reference material, IAEA-S-1, is characterized by δ33S = −0.061‰, δ34S ≡ −0.3‰ and δ36S = −1.27‰. The present dataset confirms that lunar mare basalts are characterized by a remarkable degree of sulfur isotopic homogeneity, with most new and published SF6-based sulfur isotope measurements consistent with a single mass-dependent mean isotopic composition of δ34S = 0.58 ± 0.05‰, Δ33S = 0.008 ± 0.006‰, and Δ36S = 0.2 ± 0.2‰, relative to V-CDT, where the uncertainties are quoted as 99% confidence intervals on the mean. This homogeneity allows identification of a single sample (12022, 281) with an apparent 33S enrichment, possibly reflecting cosmic-ray-induced spallation reactions. It also reveals that some mare basalts have slightly lower δ34S values than the population mean, which is consistent with sulfur loss from a reduced basaltic melt prior to eruption at the lunar surface. Both the sulfur isotope homogeneity of the lunar mare basalts and the predicted sensitivity of sulfur isotopes to vaporization-driven fractionation suggest that less than ≈1–10% of lunar sulfur was lost after a potential moon-forming impact event.

We present paleoredox data from black shales from the ca. 835–630 Ma Akademikerbreen and Polarisbreen groups, northeastern Svalbard. These iron speciation, trace metal, and organic carbon data include the first record of ocean redox conditions leading up to the Sturtian glaciation and contribute to the emerging narrative of protracted Neoproterozoic oxygenation. Sampled shales were deposited under dominantly suboxic to anoxic-ferruginous conditions on a stable continental shelf. Together with data from other basins, these data show no evidence of dramatic increases in environmental oxygen levels prior to or following the Sturtian glaciation. Proposed global oxygenation in the aftermath of the Marinoan glaciation did not lead to long-term oxygenation of shelf environments in Svalbard or northwestern Canada. We suggest that this reflects sufficient organic matter loading to maintain suboxic to anoxic water columns on continental margins. In contrast, oxygen concentrations may have been higher in low-productivity zones further offshore, where downwelling of oxygenated surface waters may have even increased oxygen concentrations in the deep ocean.

The Southern Feeder Dike Complex is part of the Franklin Large Igneous Province (LIP), exposed in the Minto Inlier of Victoria Island in the Canadian Arctic. Previous field and geochemical studies on the Franklin LIP considered its igneous rocks to be prospective for Fe-Ni-Cu mineralization. The Southern Feeder Dike Complex comprises a series of NW-SE-trending gabbroic intrusions and sedimentary hosts. Field and textural relationships show that the Complex intrusions were emplaced contemporaneously with Neoproterozoic normal faulting. Faulted contact zones correspond to prominent first derivative magnetic lineaments. Gabbroic dikes have intrusive contacts against brecciated country rock, and diabasic microxenoliths in basaltic matrices indicate multiple intrusive/brecciation events. Intrusive breccias are commonly overprinted by hydrothermal greenschist facies assemblages, with calcite + pyrite veins filling open spaces between breccia fragments. Late dikes emplaced into these heterogeneous breccias contain disseminated globular and net-textured sulfides suggesting that sulfide immiscibility was triggered on a local scale by assimilation of local wall rock. This inference is supported by elevated δ34S values of sulfides in these dikes, consistent with assimilation of country rocks. Wall-rock assimilation would have been facilitated by fault-related brecciation and cataclasis, which would expose extensive xenolith surface areas to fresh magma. Gossanous and meter-scale semimassive sulfide showings associated with dikes and sills located upsection from the Southern Feeder Dike Complex suggest that immiscible sulfide liquids may have been flushed downstream (or upsection) during replenishment of composite dike systems. Fault-mediated melt ascent along northwest-southeast faults has been documented elsewhere in the Minto Inlier, providing equivalent opportunities for wall-rock assimilation and consequent triggering of sulfide immiscibility and sulfide melt redistribution. The evidence preserved in the Complex confirms the Fe-Ni-Cu potential of the Franklin LIP and informs current models of ore deposit formation in conduit-type magmatic plumbing systems.

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA), through its Analogue Missions program, supported a microrover-based analogue mission designed to simulate a Mars rover mission geared toward identifying and characterizing methane emissions on Mars. The analogue mission included two, progressively more complex, deployments in open-pit asbestos mines where methane can be generated from the weathering of olivine into serpentine: the Jeffrey mine deployment (June 2011) and the Norbestos mine deployment (June 2012). At the Jeffrey Mine, testing was conducted over 4 days using a modified off-the-shelf Pioneer rover and scientific instruments including Raman spectrometer, Picarro methane detector, hyperspectral point spectrometer and electromagnetic induction sounder for testing rock and gas samples. At the Norbestos Mine, we used the research Kapvik microrover which features enhanced autonomous navigation capabilities and a wider array of scientific instruments. This paper describes the rover operations in terms of planning, deployment, communication and equipment setup, rover path parameters and instrument performance. Overall, the deployments suggest that a search strategy of “follow the methane” is not practical given the mechanisms of methane dispersion. Rather, identification of features related to methane sources based on image tone/color and texture from panoramic imagery is more profitable.

Dissimilatory sulfate reduction is a microbial catabolic pathway that preferentially processes less massive sulfur isotopes relative to their heavier counterparts. This sulfur isotope fractionation is recorded in ancient sedimentary rocks and generally is considered to reflect a phenotypic response to environmental variations rather than to evolutionary adaptation. Modern sulfate-reducing microorganisms isolated from similar environments can exhibit a wide range of sulfur isotope fractionations, suggesting that adaptive processes influence the sulfur isotope phenotype. To date, the relationship between evolutionary adaptation and isotopic phenotypes has not been explored. We addressed this by studying the covariation of fitness, sulfur isotope fractionation, and growth characteristics in Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough in a microbial evolution experiment. After 560 generations, the mean fitness of the evolved lineages relative to the starting isogenic population had increased by ∼17%. After 927 generations, the mean fitness relative to the initial ancestral population had increased by ∼20%. Growth rate in exponential phase increased during the course of the experiment, suggesting that this was a primary influence behind the fitness increases. Consistent changes were observed within different selection intervals between fractionation and fitness. Fitness changes were associated with changes in exponential growth rate but changes in fractionation were not. Instead, they appeared to be a response to changes in the parameters that govern growth rate: yield and cell-specific sulfate respiration rate. We hypothesize that cell-specific sulfate respiration rate, in particular, provides a bridge that allows physiological controls on fractionation to cross over to the adaptive realm.

We present a degassing study of Long Valley Caldera that explores the structural controls upon emissions of magmatic carbon dioxide gas. A total of 223 soil gas samples were collected and analyzed for stable carbon isotopes using a field-portable cavity ring-down spectrometer. This novel technique is flexible, accurate, and provides sampling feedback on a daily basis. Sampling sites included major and minor volcanic centers, regional throughgoing faults, caldera-related structures, zones of elevated seismicity, and zones of past and present hydrothermal activity. The classification of soil gases based on their δ13C and CO2 values reveals a mixing relationship among three end-members: atmospheric, biogenic, and magmatic. Signatures dominated by biogenic contributions (~4 vol %, −24‰) are found on the caldera floor, the interior of the resurgent dome, and areas associated with the Hilton Creek and Hartley Springs fault systems. With the introduction of the magmatic component (~100 vol %, −4.5‰), samples acquire mixing and hydrothermal signatures and are spatially associated with the central caldera and Mammoth Mountain. In particular, they are concentrated along the southern margin of the resurgent dome where the interplay between resurgence-related reverse faulting and a bend in the regional fault system has created a highly permeable fracture network, suitable for the formation of shallow hydrothermal systems. This contrasts with the south moat, where despite elevated seismicity, a thick sedimentary cover has formed an impermeable cap, inhibiting the ascent of fluids and gases to the surface.

Mass-independent fractionation of sulfur isotopes (MIF-S) in Archaean sediments results from photochemical processing of atmospheric sulfur species in an oxygen-depleted atmosphere. Geological preservation of MIF-S provides evidence for microbial sulfate reduction (MSR) in low-sulfate Paleoarchaean (3.8–3.2 billion years ago (Ga)) and Neoarchaean (2.8–2.5 Ga) oceans, but the significance of MSR in Mesoarchaean (3.2–2.8 Ga) oceans is less clear. Here we present multiple sulfur and iron isotope data of early diagenetic pyrites from 2.97-Gyr-old stromatolitic dolomites deposited in a tidal flat environment of the Nsuze Group, Pongola Supergroup, South Africa. We identified consistently negative Δ33S values in pyrite, which indicates photochemical reactions under anoxic atmospheric conditions, but large mass-dependent sulfur isotope fractionations of ~30‰ in δ34S, identifying active MSR. Negative pyrite δ56Fe values (−1.31 to −0.88‰) record Fe oxidation in oxygen-bearing shallow oceans coupled with biogenic Fe reduction during diagenesis, consistent with the onset of local Fe cycling in oxygen oases ~3.0 Ga. We therefore suggest the presence of oxygenated near-shore shallow-marine environments with ≥5 μM sulfate at this time, in spite of the clear presence of an overall reduced Mesoarchaean atmosphere.

Geochemical analyses of sedimentary barites (barium sulfates) in the geological record have yielded fundamental insights into the chemistry of the Archean environment and evolutionary origin of microbial metabolisms. However, the question of how barites were able to precipitate from a contemporary ocean that contained only trace amounts of sulfate remains controversial. Here we report dissolved and particulate multi-element and barium-isotopic data from Lake Superior that evidence pelagic barite precipitation at micromolar ambient sulfate. These pelagic barites likely precipitate within particle-associated microenvironments supplied with additional barium and sulfate ions derived from heterotrophic remineralization of organic matter. If active during the Archean, pelagic precipitation and subsequent sedimentation may account for the genesis of enigmatic barite deposits. Indeed, barium-isotopic analyses of barites from the Paleoarchean Dresser Formation are consistent with a pelagic mechanism of precipitation, which altogether offers a new paradigm for interpreting the temporal occurrence of barites in the geological record.

The multiple sulfur isotope composition of porewater sulfate from the anoxic marine sapropel of Mangrove Lake, Bermuda was measured in order to establish how multiple sulfur isotopes are fractionated during reoxidative sulfur cycling.The porewater-sulfate d34S and D33S dataset exhibits the distinct isotopic signatures of microbial sulfate reduction and sulfur reoxidation. We reproduced the measurements with a simple diagenetic model that yielded fractionation factors for net sulfate removal of between 29.2 0/00 and 32.5 0/00. A new approach to isotopic modeling of the sulfate profiles, informed by the chemistry of sulfur intermediate compounds in Mangrove Lake, reveals that sulfate reduction produces a relatively small intrinsic fractionation and that an active reoxidative sulfur cycle increases the fractionation of the measured values. Based on the model results, the reoxidative cycle of Mangrove Lake appears to include sulfide oxidation to elemental sulfur followed by the disproportionation of the elemental sulfur to sulfate and sulfide. This model also indicates that the reoxidative sulfur cycle of Mangrove Lake turns over from 50 to 80% of the sulfide produced by microbial sulfate reduction. The Mangrove Lake case study shows how sulfur isotope fractionations can be separated into three different “domains” in D33S–d34S space based on their ability to resolve reductive and reoxidative sulfur transformations. The first domain that differentiates reductive and reoxidative sulfur cycling is well illustrated by previous studies and requires 34S–32S fractionations more negative than 70&, beyond the fractionation limit of microbial sulfate reduction at earth surface temperatures. The second domain thatdistinguishes reductive and reoxidative processes is between 34S–32S fractionations of 40&and 0&, where the 33S–32S fractionations of sulfate reduction and reoxidation are significantly different. In the remaining domain (between 34S–32S fractionations 70& and 40&), the similarity of the multiple sulfur isotope signals from microbial sulfate reduction and disproportionation means that the two processes cannot be discriminated from each other.
