We have developed a technique that allows SLAC to provide parasitic low-intensity secondary [e.sup.+] and [e.sup.-] beams up to 25 GeV to End Stations A and B and to the FFTB during SLC operation. This beam was successfully used for a one-month-long experimental run in End Station A by the SLAC E-146 collaboration. The experiment used 400 MeV to 25 GeV electron beams at intensities averaging one electron per pulse and 120 pulses per second. The method for producing such a beam without the need for dedicated beam time was to operate parasitically from SLC: photons produced in the SLC beam scrapers in linac sectors 28, 29 and 30 were converted to positrons and electrons in a target downstream from the SLC splitter magnet. The secondary electrons or positrons were then transported to ESA with the A-line.

- Abstract
type:Journal Article, Cross sections were measured for the near-threshold electrodisintegration of 3He at momentum transfer values of q=2.4, 4.4, and 4.7 fm-1. From these and prior measurements the transverse and longitudinal response functions RT and RL were deduced. Comparisons are made against previously published and new nonrelativistic A=3 calculations using the best available nucleon-nucleon NN potentials. In general, for q<2 fm-1 these calculations accurately predict the threshold electrodisintegration of 3He. Agreement at increasing q demands consideration of two-body terms, but discrepancies still appear at the highest momentum transfers probed, perhaps due to the neglect of relativistic dynamics, or to the underestimation of high-momentum wave-function components., source:http://link.aps.org/abstract/PRC/v67/e064004, source:http://www.aps.org

The A-dependence of the quasielastic A(e,e'p) reaction has been studied at SLAC with H-2, C, Fe, and Au nuclei at momentum transfers Q^2 = 1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)^2. We extract the nuclear transparency T(A,Q^2), a measure of the average probability that the struck proton escapes from the nucleus A without interaction. Several calculations predict a significant increase in T with momentum transfer, a phenomenon known as Color Transparency. No significant rise within errors is seen for any of the nuclei studied., Comment: 5 pages incl. 2 figures, Caltech preprint OAP-731

he structure functions g1p and g1n have been measured over the range 0.014 < x < 0.9 and 1 < Q2 < 40 GeV2 using deep-inelastic scattering of 48 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from polarized protons and deuterons. We find that the Q2 dependence of g1p (g1n) at fixed x is very similar to that of the spin-averaged structure function F1p (F1n). From a NLO QCD fit to all available data we find $\Gamma_1^p - \Gamma_1^n =0.176 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.007$ at Q2=5 GeV2, in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule prediction of 0.182 \pm 0.005.

- Abstract
Measurements were made at SLAC of the cross section for scattering 29 GeV electrons from carbon at a laboratory angle of 4.58, corresponding to 0.03-x-0.1 and 1.3-Q2-2.7 GeV2. Values of RssLrsT were extracted in this kinematic range by comparing these data to cross sections measured at a higher beam energy by the NMC collaboration. The results are in reasonable agreement with pQCD calculations and with extrapolations of the R1990 parameterization of previous data. A new fit is made including these data and other recent results. q1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. New measurements are reported on the deuteron spin structure function g_1^d. These results were obtained from deep inelastic scattering of 48.3 GeV electrons on polarized deuterons in the kinematic range 0.01 < x < 0.9 and 1 < Q^2 < 40 (GeV/c)^2. These are the first high dose electron scattering data obtained using lithium deuteride (6Li2H) as the target material. Extrapolations of the data were performed to obtain moments of g_1^d, including Gamma_1^d, and the net quark polarization Delta Sigma.

The inclusive A(e,e'') cross section for x similar or equal to 1 was measured on H-2, C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers Q(2) from 1 to 6.8 (GeV/c)(2). The scaling behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y scaling to x scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit xi scaling, reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering.

- Abstract
We report on a high-statistics measurement of'. the deuteron spin structure function g(di) at a beam energy of 29 GeV in the kinematic range 0.029 < x < 0.8 and 1 < Q2 < IO (GeV / c) (2) • The integral r(di) = f(1o) g(di) dx evaluated at fixed Q2 = 3 (GeV/c) 2 gives 0.042 ± 0.003(stat) ± 0.004(syst). Combining this result with our earlier measurement of g(di), we find r(pi) - r(nt) = 0.163 ± O.OIO(stat) ± 0.016(syst), which agrees with the prediction of the Bjorken sum rule with O(a(3x)) corrections, r(pi) - r(ni) = 0.171 ± 0.008. We find the quark contribution to the proton helicity to be liq = 0.30 ± 0.06. - Abstract
We have measured the ratio (gi) /F(gi) over the range 0.029 ( x ( 0.8 and 1.3 (Q+/- ( 10 (GeV/c) using deep-inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized ammonia. An evaluation of the integral fo g+/_ (x, Q2) dx at fixed Q2 = 3 (GeV/c)2 yields 0.127 +/- 0.004(stat) +/- 0.010(syst), in agreement with previous experiments, but well below the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule prediction of 0.160 +/- 0.006. In the quark-parton model, this implies Aq = 0.27 +/- 0.10. - Abstract
We report the results from a systematic study of the quasielastic (e,e′p) reaction on 12C, 56Fe, and 197Au performed at Jefferson Lab. We have measured nuclear transparency and extracted spectral functions (corrected for radiation) over a Q2 range of 0.64–3.25 (GeV∕c)2 for all three nuclei. In addition, we have extracted separated longitudinal and transverse spectral functions at Q2 of 0.64 and 1.8 (GeV∕c)2 for these three nuclei (except for 197Au at the higher Q2). The spectral functions are compared to a number of theoretical calculations. The measured spectral functions differ in detail but not in overall shape from most of the theoretical models. In all three targets the measured spectral functions show considerable excess transverse strength at Q2=0.64 (GeV∕c)2, which is much reduced at 1.8 (GeV∕c)2.

PROTON SCATTERING ,COLOR TRANSPARENCY - Abstract
The cross section for quasielastic C-12(e, e''p) scattering has been measured at momentum transfer Q2 = 1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)2. The results are consistent with scattering from a single nucleon as the dominant process. The nuclear transparency is obtained and compared with theoretical calculations that incorporate color transparency effects. No significant rise of the transparency with Q2 is observed.

- Abstract
A separation of the longitudinal and transverse 12C(e,e′p) cross sections in the quasifree region has been performed in parallel kinematics at Q2 of 0.64 and 1.8 GeV2 for initial proton momentum <80 MeV. The separated transverse and longitudinal spectral functions at Q2=0.64GeV2 show significant differences for missing energy between 25 and 60 MeV indicating a breakdown in the single nucleon knockout picture. The transverse spectral functions exhibit definite momentum transfer dependence.

- Abstract
The differential cross section for 2H(γ,d)π0 has been measured at deuteron center-of-mass angles of 90° and 136°. This work reports the first data for this reaction above a photon energy of 1 GeV, and permits a test of the apparent constituent counting rule and reduced nuclear amplitude behavior as observed in elastic ed scattering. Measurements were performed up to a photon energy of 4.0 GeV, and are in good agreement with previous lower energy measurements. Overall, the data are inconsistent with both constituent-counting rule and reduced nuclear amplitude predictions.

- Abstract
The first measurements of the differential cross section for the d(γ,p)n reaction up to 4.0 GeV were performed at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Thomas Jefferson Laboratory. We report the cross sections at the proton center-of-mass angles of 36°, 52°, 69°, and 89°. These results are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements at lower energy. The 89° and 69° data show constituent-counting-rule behavior up to 4.0 GeV photon energy. The 52° and 36° data disagree with the counting-rule behavior. The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) model of nuclear reactions involving reduced amplitudes disagrees with the present data.

- Abstract
The inclusive A(e,e′) cross section for x≃1 was measured on 2H, C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers Q2 from 1 to 6.8 (GeV/c)2. The scaling behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y scaling to x scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit ξ scaling, reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering.

- Abstract
In virtual Compton scattering an electron is scattered off a nucleon such that the nucleon emits a photon. We show that these events can be selected experimentally, and present the first evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton in data obtained at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The angular and energy dependence of the data is well described by a calculation that includes the coherent sum of electron and proton radiation.

- Abstract
Cross sections are presented for the reaction 2H(e,e′p)n for momentum transfers in the range 1.2≤Q2≤6.8(GeV/c)2 and for missing momenta from 0 to 250 MeV/c. The longitudinal-transverse interference structure function has been separated at Q2 = 1.2(GeV/c)2. The observables are compared to calculations performed in nonrelativistic and relativistic frameworks. The data are best described by a fully relativistic calculation.

- Abstract
The cross section for quasielastic 12C(e,e’p) scattering has been measured at momentum transfer Q2=1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)2. The results are consistent with scattering from a single nucleon as the dominant process. The nuclear transparency is obtained and compared with theoretical calculations that incorporate color transparency effects. No significant rise of the transparency with Q2 is observed.
