The European Universities Initiative (EUI) promotes European values and identity and aims to revolutionise the quality and competitiveness of European Higher Education. As part of this effort, the University Network for Innovation, Technology and Engineering (Unite!) is working on developing a Joint Program (JP) offer with embedded mobility and flexibility. To achieve this goal, we present in this paper the major challenges in implementing Flexible Study Pathways (FSP) at a transnational level identified in a survey conducted at the seven partner Universities of Unite!. The most desirable forms of flexibility regarding content of course/program were Elective Courses outside the domain and inside the degree of specialisation. Main difficulties identified by partners are related to academic calendars, time cost to organise FSP, legal matters, program agendas and ensuring the achievement of learning outcomes. The results of this analysis show possible directions for the development of a European degree, which will require effective communication and stakeholder coordination and engagement.

Metallic glasses are novel engineering materials possessing unique mechanical properties which are high suitable in industrial applications as well as a structural material. Metallic glasses are fascinating because of their different properties and behavior. Often this non periodic properties are superior to the counter part of their identical crystalline alloys. Despite having superior features, understanding the behavior in different loading conditions more research approach. This thesis focuses on comparative study of Nano and micro hardness of metallic glass ribbons and DIC testing adopting different approach to implement pattern on thin specimen surface. The qualitative study as well as determining suitable method to implement pattern is a part of this thesis. Characterization of affecting factors and error sources would help in further investigations in future. Digital Image correlation is a non-contact full field measurement technique which provides highly reliable data in varying laboratory conditions. DIC algorithm found to be robust technique for high precision measurement. However, implementation of working pattern with high contrast on specimen is a challenge. Illumination from surroundings as well as vibration affects the obtained data. Tensile test graph provides the idea about the material behavior. However, sliding effect and gripping mechanism remains a challenge for thin specimen for micro and Nano-indentation tests and tensile tests. Implementing improved surface polishing and machining mechanism would aid to ensure more reliable outcome from tests.

Nuclear power is one of the largest forms of energy production in Finland. The main challenges of nuclear power relate to the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. In Finland, the spent fuel will be stored in final disposal canisters, which will then be buried approximately 430 meters deep into the bedrock, later filling the tunnels with bentonite clay. The final disposal canister consists of a nodular graphite cast iron insert and a phosphorus alloyed oxygen-free copper (Cu-OFP) overpack. The lid of the Cu-OFP overpack will be welded shut with friction stir welding (FSW). Careful study of the canister, as well as the whole disposal system, is extremely important for ensuring the safety of humans and the environment. The final disposal canister has been studied intensively during the final disposal project. However, additional studies with different test parameters are still required for ensuring the safety of final disposal. Therefore, this thesis assesses the damage of creep tested, friction stir welded Cu-OFP cross-weld specimens. The damage is assessed by calculating the cavity density and grain size of the specimens, as well as studying the distribution of the damage throughout the samples. Calculating the cavity density of the entire surface area of multiple samples manually is extremely tedious and time consuming. For these purposes, this thesis develops methods for utilizing image processing software to automate the process. An open-source image processing software called ImageJ is used for the analysis. Different processing tools were tested, and a macro code for ImageJ was written based on the test results. In order to gain as accurate results as possible, different sample preparation methods and programs were also tested for use with Cu-OFP. Based on the results, an optimized sample preparation program was created. Finally, the grain size of the samples was estimated by using the intercept method in standard SFS-EN ISO 2624. Suomessa käytetty ydinpolttoaine tullaan säilömään valurautaisesta sisäosasta ja kuparisesta (Cu-OFP) ulkokuoresta koostuvissa loppusijoituskapseleissa noin 430 metrin syvyyteen peruskallioon. Cu-OFP:stä koostuvan ulkokuoren kansi hitsataan paikoilleen käyttämällä kitkatappihitsausta. Loppusijoituskapselin, kuten myös koko loppusijoitusjärjestelmän huolellinen tutkimus on erittäin tärkeää ihmisten ja ympäristön turvallisuuden takaamiseksi. Loppusijoituskapselia on tutkittu intensiivisesti loppusijoitusprojektin aikana. Lisätutkimusta kuitenkin vaaditaan uusilla koeparametreillä loppusijoituksen turvallisuuden takaamiseksi. Tästä syystä tässä diplomityössä suoritetaan virumistestattujen, kitkatappihitsattujen poikkihitsi-kuparisauvojen (Cu-OFP) vauriotutkimusta. Vauriota analysoidaan laskemalla näytteiden kolotiheyttä ja raekokoa, sekä vaurion jakautumista näytteen eri osissa. Kolotiheyden laskeminen manuaalisesti usean näytteen koko pinta-alalta on erittäin hidasta ja monissa tapauksissa epätarkkaa. Tästä syystä tämä diplomityö kehittää tarvittavat metodit kuvankäsittelyohjelman (tässä tapauksessa avoimen lähdekoodin ohjelma ImageJ) hyödyntämiseksi ja prosessin automatisoimiseksi. Työssä testattiin erilaisia prosessointityökaluja ja testien perusteella luotiin makrokoodi ImageJ:lle. Mahdollisimman tarkkojen tulosten mahdollistamiseksi myös erilaisia näytteenvalmistusmetodeja ja -ohjelmia testattiin. Tulosten perusteella luotiin optimoitu näytteenvalmistusohjelma Cu-OFP:lle. Lopuksi myös näytteiden raekokoa arvioitiin seuraamalla standardia SFS-EN ISO 2624. Analyysissä käytetyt valokuvat kaapattiin optisella valomikroskoopilla. Finland and Sweden are amongst the first countries moving forward with the plans regarding geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel. Spent nuclear fuel is intended to be placed in long-term geological repositories in accordance with the KBS-3 method where the spent nuclear fuel is placed in large copper canisters that are sealed and buried deep in the bed rock. The load-bearing element in these canisters is an insert made of nodular cast iron of grade EN-GJS-400-15U. Questions regarding the possible role of strain aging in the material properties of the cast iron insert in the repository conditions have been largely overlooked and have not been thoroughly studied yet. This thesis explores the phenomenon of static strain aging in the nodular cast iron to be used for this application, and its effects on the mechanical performance of the material. Static strain aging was studied by pre-straining tensile specimens made from the given material to 1 %, 2 % and 3 % nominal strains. The pre-strained specimens were aged at various temperatures ranging from room temperature (RT) to 400 ℃ for varying times. The static strain aging brought pronounced yield point to the material for all studied pre-strain levels, temperatures, and aging times despite the as received material behaving smoothly with no pronounced yield point. Increasing the pre-strain raised the yield strength of the material more compared to lower pre-strain. The maximum yield strength levels were already achieved with aging in 100 ℃ for 1 day and aging at higher temperature of 200 ℃ and/or increasing aging time to 11 days had no significant effect on the yield strength. Aging at higher temperatures of 300 ℃ and 400 ℃ resulted in lower increase in yield strength and the yield point became less pronounced as the aging temperature was raised over 200 ℃. Aging non-pre-strained specimens had no effect on the yielding behavior compared to as received material. Kapselin pääasiallinen kuromaa kantava elementti on tarkoitus valmistaa EN-GJS-400-15U ferriittisestä pallografiitti-valuraudasta (PGR). Loppusijoitusolosuhteiden takia herää kysymys myötövanhenemisen mahdollisista vaikutuksista sisäosan kestävyyteen, joita ei ole tutkittu nykyisellään riittävästi. Tässä diplomityössä käsitellään staattisen myötövanhenemisen vaikutuksia sisäosassakäytettävän PGR:n mekanisiin ominaisuuksiin ja sisäosan kestävyyteen. Staattista myötövanhenemista tutkittiin esivenyttämällä materiaalista valmistettuja vetosauvoja 1 %, 2 % ja 3 % nimellisiin venymiin. Esivenytettyjä näytteitä ikäännytettiin eri lämpötiloissa, jotka vaihtelivat huoneenlämpötilasta 400 ℃-asteeseen. Staattinen myötövanheneminen (SSA) toi korostuneen myötörajan esiin materiaalin jännitys-venymäkäyrissä kaikilla tutkituilla esivenymillä, kaikissa tutkituissa lämpötiloissa ja kaikilla tutkituilla ikäännytysajoilla, vaikka vastaanotetussa tilassaan tutkittu materiaali myöti tasaisesti ilman korostunutta myötörajaa. Esivenymän suurentaminen nosti materiaalin myötörajaa enemmän verrattuna matalampiin esivenymiin. Maksimaalinen myötölujuus saavutettiin jo yhden päivän ikäännytyksellä 100 ℃-asteen lämpötilassa ja tätä pidempi 11 päivän ikäännytys ja/tai ikäännytyslämpötilan nostaminen 200 ℃-asteeseen ei vaikuttanut myötölujuuteen merkittävästi. Korkeammissa 300 ℃ ja 400 ℃ lämpötiloissa myötölujuus nousi vähemmän ja myötörajasta tuli selvästi vähemmän korostunut kuin matalammissa lämpötiloissa. Esivenyttämättömien testisauvojen ikäännytyksellä ei ollut vaikutusta materiaalin käyttäytymiseen. The proliferation of inertial MEMS sensors into automotive safety systems has contributed to annually declining road accidents and deaths. Being the integral sensing components for vehicular safety, the reliability of inertial MEMS is stringently tested in a wide range of thermal conditions, pushing the boundaries of the designs and materials. For this reason, die attach mediums are often subject to cracking or delamination during development qualification. Fully understanding the mechanisms behind these defects is essential in preventing and fixing them. This research set out to develop an adhesive peel test method for identifying and studying die attach adhesive cracks in over-moulded lead frame-based packages. This presented two main challenges, how to expose the die pad for peeling, and how to perform the peel test itself. Various de-capsulation methods were explored, resulting in the samples being ground to the die pad backside and die pad edge to allow access for peeling. Several peel methods were trialled with different levels of success. A manual peel test was successfully implemented, which effectively revealed the die attach surfaces for analysis. The peeled surfaces clearly revealed cracked adhesive surface morphology in three dimensions, which could be studied in detail with a SEM. The peels also revealed other die pad surface artefacts, the relevance of which could be investigated further in future research. All cracks and surface artefacts were clear and could be successfully measured using software tools.

Large changes in people flow can happen in buildings throughout their life cycles. This thesis studies long-term forecasting of elevator traffic data using time series modeling. The models can also be used for automatic detection of anomalies, which makes it possible to quickly react to unexpected problems. Long-term forecasts can be used for planning changes to elevator systems before their capacity is exceeded and problems in people flow arise. This thesis includes a literature review of time series characteristics and models. Year-ahead forecasts were made with one traditional and two machine learning-based models, which were chosen based on the literature review. The forecasts obtained with the models were compared to a simple baseline model, which is based on the observations from the previous year. Three models were used for anomaly detection. Their results were evaluated by comparing their findings to known events during the test period. The forecasting methods modeled the complex seasonality in the time series well. Predicting the long-term trend in the time series was not as successful with any of the models. Based on the results, XGBoost machine learning model turned out to be the best-performing method. However, the differences between the models were small and only data from a single building was used, which makes it impossible to generalize the result. The anomaly detection models found several days with less or more traffic than normal. For some of these days, an explanation supporting the findings of the models could be found. People flow data can give invaluable insights into how different types of buildings are used and how people flow changes throughout the lifecycle of each building. Long-term forecasts are helpful especially when elevator modernizations are planned. Anomaly detection is useful for servicing the elevators when problems are detected. Mallit mahdollistavat myös odottamattomien muutosten automaattisen tunnistamisen, joka nopeuttaa ongelmien korjaamista. Pitkän ajan ennusteilla voidaan suunnitella muutoksia hissijärjestelmiin ennen kuin niiden kapasiteetti ylittyy ja ongelmia ihmisvirroissa alkaa esiintyä. Tutkimukseen sisältyy kirjallisuuskatsaus aikasarjoihin ja niiden mallinnusmenetelmiin. Vuoden mittaisia ennusteita tehtiin yhdellä perinteisellä ja kahdella koneoppimiseen perustavalla mallinnusmenetelmällä, jotka valittiin kirjallisuuskatsauksen perusteella. Mallien ennusteita verrattiin yksinkertaiseen verrokkimalliin, joka perustuu edellisvuoden arvoihin. Odottamattomia tapahtumia tunnistettiin kolmella mallilla. Niiden tuloksia arvioitiin vertaamalla mallien löydöksiä tunnettuihin tapahtumiin testijakson aikana. Ennustusmallit onnistuivat mallintamaan aikasarjojen monimutkaiset kausivaihtelut hyvin. Sen sijaan pitkän aikavälin trendien ennustamisessa oli ongelmia kaikilla malleilla. Tulosten perusteella XGBoost-koneoppimismalli osoittautui parhaaksi ennustusmenetelmäksi. Koska erot mallien välillä olivat pieniä ja mallinukseen käytettiin vain yhden rakennuksen dataa, ei tuloksia voida pitää yleispätevinä. Odottamattomien tapahtumien tunnistamiseen käytetyt mallit löysivät useita päiviä, joiden liikenne oli pienempää tai suurempaa kuin normaalisti. Osalle näistä päivistä pystyttiin löytämään selitys, joka tukee mallien löydöksiä. Aikasarjamallinnuksen avulla datasta voidaan oppia, miten erilaisten rakennusten ihmisvirrat muuttuvat niiden elinkaaren aikana. The focus of this Masters Thesis will be the design of an installation rack for remote sensing instruments which were mounted and tested on board the research aircraft Short SC7 Skyvan. The aircrafts modification work was part of Aalto University´s School of Electrical Engineering research flight AISA project in cooperation with the University of Helsinki. The University of Helsinki´s Remote Sensing Group purchased a new optical range AISA Eagle II spectrometer with a separate inertial measurement unit for airborne remote sensing research. In order to achieve successful measurements during measurement flight, the instruments mounting configuration had to be adjustable in order to overcome changes in an aircraft´s angle of attack at different airspeeds regarding varying measurement angles desired. Due to the relatively short amount of time available at the AISA project, one of the challenges of the modification work process was to find a practical, but an airworthy installation concept which was reasonable to manufacture and implement on board a type certified aircraft. To achieve this, the design of the installation rack and its strength of materials calculations and verification was presented in a modification work plan in order to show compliance with the airworthiness regulations and standards set for aircraft structures which then had to be approved by an authorized aviation authority or an approved design organization. The main purpose of this Masters Thesis is not to introduce an advanced engineering problem solving in the field of aerospace structural design in question, but rather to present an overall illustration of a modification work process in general, when implemented on board an airworthy aircraft. Tribocorrosion is a poorly understood material degradation process where wear and corrosion processes occur simultaneously. It is an especially important problem in, for example, hydrometallurgical processes, pulp and paper industry, and biomedical engineering. In tribocorrosion contacts, thewear and corrosion processes have a synergistic behaviour, and may enhance or inhibit each other. Previous research into the tribocorrosion behaviour of low-alloy steels is limited. This thesis examines the tribocorrosion behaviour of four low-alloy steels in two contact types. Two types of tests were performed, a Pin-on-Disc test using a ball-on-flat contact geometry and a slurry pot test, relying on impacts by solid angular particles on the specimen surfaces. Both tests were conducted in the presence and absence of mechanical wear and/or corrosion to compare the change in material behaviour under various conditions. Pin-on-Disc tests were performed for two of four test materials, while slurry pot was performed on all four. Volume losses through wear, corrosion and the synergy processes were calculated for the Pin-on-Disc samples. The analysis of the behaviour in the slurry pot tests was based on weight loss measurements. Changes in the material surfaces were investigated for both tests. In Pin-on-Disc tests, a difference between the behaviour of the two test materials was detected. The current density of the materials responded differently to the applied load. It was also found that this response correlated with a change in the values of the coefficient of friction. Synergy behaviour was also found to be very different for the two materials. The erosion-corrosion behaviour of the samples was found to have some differences. Some correlation could be found between the tribocorrosion behaviour and mechanical properties of the alloys. It was found that the behaviour of the samples in erosion-corrosion contacts was connected mostly to system parameters, such as the erosive the impi, Tribokorroosio on huonosti ymmärretty materiaalien vaurioitumisprosessi, jossa materiaali altistuu samanaikaisesti kulumiselle ja korroosiolle. Kulumisesta, korroosiosta ja synergiaprosesseista johtuvat materiaalihäviöt määritettiin ja synergiaprosesseja vertailtiin valittujen materiaalien välillä. Slurry pot -kokeet tehtiin kaikille neljälle testimateriaalille, joiden käyttäytymistä arvioitiin massahäviöiden ja pinnanmuutosten avulla. Pin-on-Disc kokeessa materiaalien väliset käyttäytymiserot olivat selviä. Virrantiheyden arvot muuttuivat kulumisen vaikutuksesta toiselle materiaaleista (Material 2). Muutos korreloi kitkakertoimen muutoksen kanssa. Kulumisen ja korroosion välinen synergiakäyttäytyminen, erityisesti synergian osuus kokonaismateriaalihäviöihin, oli myös hyvin erilainen testimateriaalien välillä. Digital Image Correlation is now commonly used in the fields of solid and fracture mechanics to measure full-field displacements for both ductile and brittle materials. However, no detailed study of application of DIC on fracture test of freshwater ice is available in the literature. This thesis focuses on DIC analysis of fracture experiments, for S2 columnar freshwater ice, conducted at Aalto Ice Tank. DIC is used to find the crack path along with crack tip location using optimization approach based on singular field around the crack. Because of low signal to noise ratio of DIC displacement fields, kinematic displacement fields based on William's elasticity solution are also implemented to estimate the crack tip and find stress intensity factor for the extended crack length. The implemented methodology is capable of finding the fracture characteristics after the application of the peak load on the crack mouth of edge cracked rectangular plate for different specimen sizes at different loading rates. Improving the signal to noise ratio of the measured DIC displacement fields can reduce the uncertainties in the results.

Flywheel energy storage (FES), as an environmental-friendly method of storing energy, attracts the research interest among many scientific areas. For the energy industry, it is essential to use the storage efficiently. In this case, efficiency includes low environmental footprint, decreased costs, together with high storage capacity. It is challenging to fulfill these requirements using the state-of-the-art options. Nowadays, due to rapid development of materials engineering and power electronics, FES systems are being modernized as well. Recently developed materials, including fiber and nano-fiber reinforced composites, are having high energy density, stiffnessto-weight ratio, as well as higher strength, comparing to bulk materials, such as steel. This thesis describes the main material design considerations for a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) rotor of a new generation of high capacity FES without central shaft. In this system the rotor has a "thin ring" design, where the inner rotor radius is close to the outer radius. This allows the radial stress to be minimized, and the tensile stress capability of the fibers to be fully utilized, providing maximum energy density of the rotor. In theory, providing that the rotor remains a "thin ring", very large diameters rotors can be constructed (tens to hundreds of meters). Furthermore, with the utilization of active magnetic bearings (AMB) for radial stabilization, passive vertical levitation, and permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM), FES becomes a significant competitor of other energy storages. Although the thin ring concept without a central shaft may simplify the manufacturing, torque transfer and stabilizing forces, previously applied to the shaft, are applied to the rotor directly. Therefore, significant challenges remain to be solved during the design process of the shaft-less rotor.
