Isospin symmetry is a fundamental concept in nuclear physics. Even though isospin symmetry is partially broken, it holds approximately for most nuclear systems, which makes exceptions very interesting from the nuclear structure perspective. In this framework, it is expected that the spins and parities of the ground states of mirror nuclei should be the same, in particular for the simplest systems where a proton is exchanged with a neutron or vice versa. In this work, we present evidence that this assumption is broken in the mirror pair $^{71}$Br and $^{71}$Kr system. Our conclusions are based on a high-statistics $\beta$ decay study of $^{71}$Kr and on state-of-the-art shell model calculations. In our work, we also found evidence of a new state in $^{70}$Se, populated in the $\beta$-delayed proton emission process which can be interpreted as the long sought coexisting 0$^+$ state., Comment: 8 pages with references, 3 figures. Quantum key distribution (QKD) is nowadays a well established method for generating secret keys at a distance in an information-theoretic secure way, as the secrecy of QKD relies on the laws of quantum physics and not computational complexity. In order to industrialize QKD, low-cost, mass-manufactured and practical QKD setups are required. Hence, photonic and electronic integration of the sender's and receiver's respective components is currently in the spotlight. Here we present a high-speed (2.5 GHz) integrated QKD setup featuring a transmitter chip in silicon photonics allowing for high-speed modulation and accurate state preparation, as well as a polarization-independent low-loss receiver chip in aluminum borosilicate glass fabricated by the femtosecond laser micromachining technique. Our system achieves raw bit error rates, quantum bit error rates and secret key rates equivalent to a much more complex state-of-the-art setup based on discrete components.

The data-aware method of distributions (DA-MD) is a low-dimension data assimilation procedure to forecast the behavior of dynamical systems described by differential equations. It combines sequential Bayesian update with the MD, such that the former utilizes available observations while the latter propagates the (joint) probability distribution of the uncertain system state(s). The core of DA-MD is the minimization of a distance between an observation and a prediction in distributional terms, with prior and posterior distributions constrained on a statistical manifold defined by the MD. We leverage the information-geometric properties of the statistical manifold to reduce predictive uncertainty via data assimilation. Specifically, we exploit the information geometric structures induced by two discrepancy metrics, the Kullback-Leibler divergence and the Wasserstein distance, which explicitly yield natural gradient descent. To further accelerate optimization, we build a deep neural network as a surrogate model for the MD that enables automatic differentiation. The manifold's geometry is quantified without sampling, yielding an accurate approximation of the gradient descent direction. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that accounting for the information-geometry of the manifold significantly reduces the computational cost of data assimilation by facilitating the calculation of gradients and by reducing the number of required iterations. Both storage needs and computational cost depend on the dimensionality of a statistical manifold, which is typically small by MD construction. When convergence is achieved, the Kullback-Leibler and $L_2$ Wasserstein metrics have similar performances, with the former being more sensitive to poor choices of the prior., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

We studied the proton-rich $T_z=-1$ nucleus $^{70}$Kr through inelastic scattering at intermediate energies in order to extract the reduced transition probability, $B(E2;\;0^+ \rightarrow 2^+)$. Comparison with the other members of the $A=70$ isospin triplet, $^{70}$Br and $^{70}$Se, studied in the same experiment, shows a $3\sigma$ deviation from the expected linearity of the electromagnetic matrix elements as a function of $T_z$. At present, no established nuclear structure theory can describe this observed deviation quantitatively. This is the first violation of isospin symmetry at this level observed in the transition matrix elements. A heuristic approach may explain the anomaly by a shape change between the mirror nuclei $^{70}$Kr and $^{70}$Se contrary to the model predictions., Comment: accepted PRL

We report here the results of a study of the $\beta$ decay of the proton-rich Ge isotopes, $^{60}$Ge and $^{62}$Ge, produced in an experiment at the RIKEN Nishina Center. We have improved our knowledge of the half-lives of $^{62}$Ge (73.5(1) ms), $^{60}$Ge (25.0(3) ms) and its daughter nucleus, $^{60}$Ga (69.4(2) ms). We measured individual $\beta$-delayed proton and $\gamma$ emissions and their related branching ratios. Decay schemes and absolute Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths have been determined. The mass excesses of the nuclei under study have been deduced. A total $\beta$-delayed proton-emission branching ratio of 67(3)% has been obtained for $^{60}$Ge. New information has been obtained on the energy levels populated in $^{60}$Ga and on the 1/2$^-$ excited state in the $\beta p$ daughter $^{59}$Zn. We extracted a ground state to ground state feeding of 85.3(3)% for the decay of $^{62}$Ge. The use of glass for pharmaceutical new applications such as high-technology drugs, requires the strictest container inertness. A common theme of paramount importance in glass container integrity preservation is the detailed mechanism driving the sudden failure due the crack propagation. Using a combination of Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Finite Element Method (FEM), a stress map for glass cartridges packed into an accumulation table and transported by a conveyor belt at a fixed velocity is obtained under realistic conditions. The DEM calculation provides a full description of the dynamics of the cartridges, as approximated by an equivalent sphere, as well as the statistics of the multiple collisions. The FEM calculation exploits this input to provide the maximum principal stress of different pairs as a function of time. Our analysis shows that, during their transportation on the conveyor belt, the cartridges are subject to several shocks of varying intensities. Under these conditions, a crack may originate inside the cartridge in the area of maximal tensile stress, and propagate outward. The $N=Z=36$ nucleus $^{72}$Kr has been studied by inelastic scattering at intermediate energies. Two targets, $^{9}$Be and $^{197}$Au, were used to extract the nuclear deformation length, $\delta_\text{N}$, and the reduced $E2$ transition probability, $B(E2)$. The previously unknown non-yrast $2^+$ and $4^+$ states as well as a new candidate for the octupole $3^-$ state have been observed in the scattering on the Be target and placed in the level scheme based on $\gamma-\gamma$ coincidences. The second $2^+$ state was also observed in the scattering on the Au target and the $B(E2;\;2^+_2 \rightarrow 0^+_1)$ value could be determined for the first time. Analyzing the results in terms of a two-band mixing model shows clear evidence for a oblate-prolate shape coexistence and can be explained by a shape change from an oblate ground state to prolate deformed yrast band from the first $2^+$ state. Hyperbolic balance laws with uncertain (random) parameters and inputs are ubiquitous in science and engineering. Quantification of uncertainty in predictions derived from such laws, and reduction of predictive uncertainty via data assimilation, remain an open challenge. That is due to nonlinearity of governing equations, whose solutions are highly non-Gaussian and often discontinuous. To ameliorate these issues in a computationally efficient way, we use the method of distributions, which here takes the form of a deterministic equation for spatiotemporal evolution of the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the random system state, as a means of forward uncertainty propagation. Uncertainty reduction is achieved by recasting the standard loss function, i.e., discrepancy between observations and model predictions, in distributional terms. This step exploits the equivalence between minimization of the square error discrepancy and the Kullback-Leibler divergence. The loss function is regularized by adding a Lagrangian constraint enforcing fulfillment of the CDF equation. Minimization is performed sequentially, progressively updating the parameters of the CDF equation as more measurements are assimilated., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

Ambiguity sets of probability distributions are used to hedge against uncertainty about the true probabilities of random quantities of interest (QoIs). When available, these ambiguity sets are constructed from both data (collected at the initial time and along the boundaries of the physical domain) and concentration-of-measure results on the Wasserstein metric. To propagate the ambiguity sets into the future, we use a physics-dependent equation governing the evolution of cumulative distribution functions (CDF) obtained through the method of distributions. This study focuses on the latter step by investigating the spatio-temporal evolution of data-driven ambiguity sets and their associated guarantees when the random QoIs they describe obey hyperbolic partial-differential equations with random inputs. For general nonlinear hyperbolic equations with smooth solutions, the CDF equation is used to propagate the upper and lower envelopes of pointwise ambiguity bands. For linear dynamics, the CDF equation allows us to construct an evolution equation for tighter ambiguity balls. We demonstrate that, in both cases, the ambiguity sets are guaranteed to contain the true (unknown) distributions within a prescribed confidence.

Shape coexistence in the $Z \approx 82$ region has been established in mercury, lead and polonium isotopes. Even-even mercury isotopes with $100 \leq N \leq 106$ present multiple fingerprints of this phenomenon, which seems to be no longer present for $N \geq 110$. According to a number of theoretical calculations, shape coexistence is predicted in the $^{188}$Hg isotope. The $^{188}$Hg nucleus was populated using two different fusion-evaporation reactions with two targets, $^{158}$Gd and $^{160}$Gd, and a beam of $^{34}$S, provided by the Tandem-ALPI accelerators complex at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The channels of interest were selected using the information from the Neutron Wall array, while the $\gamma$ rays were detected using the GALILEO $\gamma$-ray array. The lifetimes of the excited states were determined using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift method, employing the dedicated GALILEO plunger device. Using the two-bands mixing and rotational models, the deformation of the pure configurations was obtained from the experimental results. The extracted transition strengths were compared with those calculated with the state-of-the-art symmetry-conserving configuration-mixing (SCCM) and five-dimentional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) approaches in order to shed light on the nature of the observed structures in the $^{188}$Hg nucleus. The proton-rich isotope 68Br was discovered in secondary fragmentation reactions of fast radioactive beams. Proton-rich secondary beams of 70,71,72Kr and 70Br, produced at the RIKEN Nishina Center and identified by the BigRIPS fragment separator, impinged on a secondary 9Be target. Unambiguous particle identification behind the secondary target was achieved with the ZeroDegree spectrometer. Based on the expected direct production cross sections from neighboring isotopes, the lifetime of the ground or long-lived isomeric state of 68Br was estimated. The results suggest that secondary fragmentation reactions, where relatively few nucleons are removed from the projectile, offer an alternative way to search for new isotopes, as these reactions populate preferentially low-lying states., Comment: Phys. Several new bands have been identified in 130Ba, among which there is one with band-head spin 8+. Its properties are in agreement with the Fermi-aligned \nu h11/2^2 , 7/2+[523] \otimes 9/2-[514] Nilsson configuration. This is the first observation of a two-quasiparticle t-band in the A=130 mass region. The t-band is fed by a dipole band involving two additional h11/2 protons. The odd-spin partners of the proton and neutron S-bands and the ground-state band at high spins are also newly identified. The observed bands are discussed using several theoretical models, which strongly suggest the coexistence of prolate and oblate shapes polarized by rotation aligned two-proton and two-neutron configurations, as well as prolate collective rotations around axes with different orientations. With the new results, 130Ba presents one of the best and most complete sets of collective excitations that a gamma-soft nucleus can manifest at medium and high spins, revealing a diversity of shapes and rotations for the nuclei in the A = 130 mass region., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

The GALILEO $\gamma$-ray spectrometer has been constructed at the Legnaro National Laboratory of INFN (LNL-INFN). It can be coupled to advanced ancillary devices which allows nuclear structure studies employing the variety of in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy methods. Such studies benefit from reactions induced by the intense stable beams delivered by the Tandem-ALPI-PIAVE accelerator complex and by the radioactive beams which will be provided by the SPES facility. In this paper we outline two experiments performed within the experimental campaign at GALILEO coupled to the EUCLIDES Si-ball and the Neutron Wall array. The first one was aimed at spectroscopic studies in A=31 mirror nuclei and the second one at measurements of lifetimes of excited states in nuclei in the vicinity of $^{100}$Sn., Comment: The IX International Symposium on EXOtic Nuclei (EXON-2018)
