A severe storm caused floods and landslides in the Balkan region in May 2014. In response to the disaster, geophysical and geotechnical surveys were organized as a Geoscientists Without Borders (GWB) project of SEG. It took place in eight landslide-prone areas in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina in three phases in 2015 and 2016. The seismic and electric resistivity surveys were conducted, and the results were interpreted in conjunction with the geotechnical inspection. The surveys identified the size of a potential landslide layer by the S-wave velocity distribution and, in particular high-risk locations, by electric resistivity anomalies. This interpretation enhanced the geotechnical observation. From the result, several countermeasures were recommended to suit the budgetary restrictions of local governments. Among them, the survey results in the Lopare locality have been presented as an example. The project was organized by the Association of Geophysicists and Environmentalists of Serbia involving many scientists, engineers, students, government staff, and local communities. As well as technical achievements, the significance of the project included providing students with opportunities to have practical experience of geophysical surveys and to learn outside the classroom and bringing together participants from different racial, political, religious, and educational backgrounds. All were made aware of the importance of humanitarian expert work. We have assessed the effectiveness of the GWB project using the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Development Assistance Committee. One important outcome of the assessment was that such a volunteer geoscientific survey cannot stand alone. It would be more effective if incorporated in overall recovery and prevention programs.

We investigated the relationship between general inclusive victimhood (i.e., perceived similarity between the ingroups’ and other victim groups’ experiences of collective victimization) and willingness to engage in direct, intimate (e.g., intimate relationships) and distant (e.g., neighbors) contact with the adversary group in the aftermath of collective violence. We tested this link across two post-conflict contexts: Bosnia-Herzegovina (N = 147 students) and the Basque Country (N = 351 adults). We found that general inclusive victimhood was linked to greater willingness to engage in distant intergroup contact in two contexts (e.g., having an outgroup member as a neighbor), but only predicted more intimate forms of intergroup contact (e.g., having a former adversary member as a romantic partner) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The link between general inclusive victimhood and both types of contact was sequentially mediated by conflict-specific inclusive victimhood and trust in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Basque Country, and via conflict-specific inclusive victimhood and empathy in the Basque Country. Theoretical and practical implications for reconciliation in the aftermath of ethnic conflict are discussed.

The author analyses the discourse about Kosovo in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) during the 1980s. During these years, Serbian media developed several stereotypes to discredit the political leaders of BiH and accuse them of fomenting unrest in Kosovo. The author assesses these stereotypical depictions as well as the response of the Islamic Community and political leadership in BiH to these accusations. He asks what the attitude of Serbia’s political elite towards BiH was, and what role the Serbian political leadership played in the media attacks. He then investigates the evolution of the BiH leadership’s stances towards the events in Kosovo between the beginning and the end of the 1980s. And finally, through a close reading of session minutes and media, he assesses the increasingly deviating views of the BiH political leaders vis-á-vis the situation in Kosovo.

The text reviews the presence of Bosnian drama and prose literature on professional theater stages in BiH through performances that participated in the Theater Festival of BiH in Jajce in the last 50 years. Through an overview of the participation of performances at one of the most important state festivals, the presence of BiH plays in professional theaters in Bosnia is analyzed in the mentioned period - the treatment of BiH dramas by theaters as well as perceptions of them by the professional audience.

In today's globalized, fast-changeable, and digitalized market, companies strongly need and seek talents, who, besides basic skills, possess higher levels, as well as the optimal mix of different competencies and qualifications. Attracting the best employees, developing and retaining them represents a crucial success factor for any firm and requires well-organized talent management. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of talent management, viewed through attracting, developing, and retaining talents, on organizational performance improvement in companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Data collection is based on a questionnaire, related to core elements of talent management and organizational performance (profitability and sales growth), with respondents from the population of talented managers, who work in companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The findings indicate that talent management has a positive statistically significant influence on observed organizational performance in companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since talented managers are a key strategic resource, who lead organizations to accomplish excellent organizational performance, companies in developing countries need to tailor effective and customized talent management strategies, to achieve continuous improvement of organizational outcomes.

The model of the study is descriptive research design. In conclusion part of the study, deficiencies observed in teaching Turkish in Bosnia Herzegovina have been handled. Also, proposals regarding popularizing Turkish and increasing its permanency have been referred.

Biological invasions are a major driver of global environmental change as invasive non-native species can exert severe environmental impacts on invaded ecosystems.Estuaries are especially vulnerable to biological invasions, which in highly urbanised areas are further facilitated by introduction pathways linked to commercial activities. This study provides a risk screening of non- native invasive species for the highly urbanised River Neretva Estuary (Eastern Adriatic Sea: Croatia and Bosnia– Herzegovina). In total, 12 species of non-native aquatic organisms were identified and screened for their invasiveness with the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit. Of these species, eight were classified as carrying a high risk of invasiveness under current climate conditions and nine under future climate conditions. Amongst the high-risk species, blue crab Callinectes sapidus has already caused impacts in the risk assessment area, where it also represents an important economic resource. The “horizon” species Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum also carried a high risk of invasiveness, which for the latter species applied under predicted global warming. The present findings will contribute towards preventative management and control measures for the conservation of the natural ecosystem of the River Neretva Estuary whilst accounting for aquatic farming demands.

Presented here is a middle Miocene proboscidean fauna—deinotheres and gomphotheres—from lignites of the coal mine in Gracanica (Bugojno Basin) in Bosnia–Herzegovina. The material, which exclusively comprises teeth (n = 42), is described and systematically discussed. The majority of the studied fossils represent Prodeinotherium bavaricum, but gomphotheres are also a common faunal element and are identified as Gomphotherium angustidens and tentatively as cf. Gomphotherium subtapiroideum. Noteworthy is the occurrence of an amebelodontine, identified as cf. Protanancus, and represented in the present material only by a single milk tooth. Protanancus is generally known from Africa and Asia and extremely rarely documented in southeastern Europe so far. The Gracanica fauna is supposed to correlate with the Mammalian Neogene unit late MN5 or early MN6.

Despite considerable analysis of development policies in postwar Bosnia-Herzegovina, local-internationals encounters have received less attention. In an attempt to fill this gap, this article traces the discursive processes through which development professionals frame their narratives about Bosnian society, and in turn, how its inhabitants experience the internationals staying in the country. Applying Maria Todorova's framework, I show how Western “expatriates” tend to incorporate the Balkans’ liminality into their social constructs to depoliticize development practices. On the other hand, I approach emic understandings of Europeanness and Balkanism as a situationally embedded and contested process that comes into play to (re)draw social and moral boundaries in Bosnian society. I conclude by considering local-international encounters as a privileged site for exploring the postsocialist state but also new political subjectivities in contemporary Bosnia.

I am thankful to be invited to share some reflections on the genocide in Bosnia-Herzegovina and on the actions of scholars in Bosnia-Herzegovina and around the world in resisting genocide and in promoting peace, justice, and respect for human dignity in the face of such a tragedy.

From the perspective of Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) today, the legacy of the Dayton Peace Agreement (DPA) remains mixed. The dominant view is that the DPA is the origin of its political impasse, economic stagnation, and failed nation-building. Yet, it is indisputable that DPA has been successful in preventing the recurrence of a major violent ethnic conflict in BiH. More recently, the failures of Syrian peace talks to yield a durable settlement have evoked the lessons from the DPA. However, most analyses have concluded the parallels with the Bosnian war and its resolution are misplaced given the complexity and severity of the war in Syria. This article argues for a more nuanced approach to distilling the Dayton legacy, particularly when it is employed as a historical analogy. It highlights the usefulness of the DPA as an analogy for successful conflict termination, while offering lessons about the pitfalls of externally imposed consociational arrangements.

This article develops a new conceptual framework to understand silence and silencing with regard to conflict-related sexual violence against men. Based on fieldwork data from Bosnia–Herzegovina, it argues that rather than the silence of victims, the problem is that survivor testimonies are coopted and entextualized, and that male vulnerabilities remain inaudible. This process reinforces ignorance about male-directed sexual violence and helps to maintain the dominant view that masculinity and vulnerability are mutually exclusive. To illustrate the point, it examines two spaces where male survivors have told their stories in Bosnia–Herzegovina: the courts and the detainee associations.

The contemporary Islamic landscape in Bosnia-Herzegovina is often depicted as marked by fault lines between different Muslim groups, many of which are described as products of foreign intervention. This paper argues that this image does not reflect the multiplicity of Islamic discourses and practices, and the many ways that Bosnian Muslims engage with, promote, and resist them on the ground. It explores how pious Muslim women can move between different approaches to Islam over time, engage with a range of Islamic actors simultaneously, and draw on their teachings selectively or situationally without necessarily claiming group membership. By engaging with a range of actors making competing claims to authority, women contribute to both the pluralization of Islamic authority and the continued relevance of authoritative actors. The paper argues that paying attention to pious women's practices allows us to challenge crude characterizations of the transformations of Islam in Bosnia and question the narrative of distinct Muslim groups at odds with each other.
