By using the ultra-deep \textit{JWST}/MIRI image at 5.6 $\mu m$ in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field, we constrain the role of strong H$\alpha$-emitters (HAEs) during Cosmic Reionization at $z\simeq7-8$. Our sample of HAEs is comprised of young ($<35\;\rm Myr$) galaxies, except for one single galaxy ($\approx 300\;\rm Myr$), with low stellar masses ($\lesssim 10^{9}\;\rm M_{\odot}$). These HAEs show a wide range of UV-$\beta$ slopes, with a median value of $\beta = -2.15\pm0.21$ which broadly correlates with stellar mass. We estimate the ionizing photon production efficiency ($\xi_{ion,0}$) of these sources (assuming $f_{esc,LyC} = 0\%$), which yields a median value $\rm log_{10}(\xi_{ion,0}/(Hz\;erg^{-1})) = 25.50^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$. We show that $\xi_{ion,0}$ positively correlates with EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$) and specific star formation rate (sSFR). Instead $\xi_{ion,0}$ weakly anti-correlates with stellar mass and $\beta$. Based on the $\beta$ values, we predict $f_{esc, LyC}=4\%^{+3}_{-2}$, which results in $\rm log_{10}(\xi_{ion}/(Hz\;erg^{-1})) = 25.55^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$. Considering this and related findings from the literature, we find a mild evolution of $\xi_{ion}$with redshift. Additionally, our results suggest that these HAEs require only modest escape fractions ($f_{esc, rel}$) of 6$-$15\% to reionize their surrounding intergalactic medium. By only considering the contribution of these HAEs, we estimated their total ionizing emissivity ($\dot{N}_{ion}$) as $\dot{N}_{ion} = 10^{50.53 \pm 0.45}; \text{s}^{-1}\text{Mpc}^{-3}$. When comparing their $\dot{N}_{ion}$ with "non-H$\alpha$ emitter" galaxies across the same redshift range, we find that that strong, young, and low-mass emitters may have played an important role during Cosmic Reionization., Comment: 21 pages, 11 Figures, 1 table. We present MIRI/JWST medium-resolution spectroscopy (MRS) and imaging (MIRIM) of the lensed galaxy MACS1149-JD1 at a redshift of $z$=9.1092$\pm$0.0002 (Universe age about 530 Myr). We detect, for the first time, spatially resolved H$\alpha$ emission in a galaxy at a redshift above nine. The structure of the H$\alpha$ emitting gas consists of two clumps, S and N. The total H$\alpha$ luminosity implies an instantaneous star-formation of 5.3$\pm$0.4 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for solar metallicities. The ionizing photon production efficiency, $\log(\zeta_\mathrm{ion})$, shows a spatially resolved structure with values of 25.55$\pm$0.03, 25.47$\pm$0.03, and 25.91$\pm$0.09 Hz erg$^{-1}$ for the integrated galaxy, and clumps S and N, respectively. The H$\alpha$ rest-frame equivalent width, EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$), is 726$^{+660}_{-182}$ \'Angstrom for the integrated galaxy, but presents extreme values of 531$^{+300}_{-96}$ \'Angstrom and $\geq$1951 \'Angstrom for clumps S and N, respectively. The spatially resolved ionizing photon production efficiency is within the range of values measured in galaxies at redshift above six, and well above the canonical value (25.2$\pm$0.1 Hz erg$^{-1}$). The extreme difference of EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$) for Clumps S and N indicates the presence of a recent (<5 Myrs) burst in clump N and a star formation over a larger period of time (e.g., $\sim$50 Myr) in clump S. Finally, clump S and N show very different H$\alpha$ kinematics with velocity dispersions of 56$\pm$4 km s$^{-1}$ and 113$\pm$33 km s$^{-1}$, likely indicating the presence of outflows or increased turbulence in the clump N. The final phase of the reionization process can be probed by rest-frame UV absorption spectra of quasars at z>6, shedding light on the properties of the diffuse intergalactic medium within the first Gyr of the Universe. The ESO Large Programme "XQR-30: the ultimate XSHOOTER legacy survey of quasars at z~5.8-6.6" dedicated ~250 hours of observations at the VLT to create a homogeneous and high-quality sample of spectra of 30 luminous quasars at z~6, covering the rest wavelength range from the Lyman limit to beyond the MgII emission. Twelve quasar spectra of similar quality from the XSHOOTER archive were added to form the enlarged XQR-30 sample, corresponding to a total of ~350 hours of on-source exposure time. The median effective resolving power of the 42 spectra is R~11400 and 9800 in the VIS and NIR arm, respectively. The signal-to-noise ratio per 10 km/s pixel ranges from ~11 to 114 at $\lambda \simeq 1285$ \AA rest frame, with a median value of ~29. We describe the observations, data reduction and analysis of the spectra, together with some first results based on the E-XQR-30 sample. New photometry in the H and K bands are provided for the XQR-30 quasars, together with composite spectra whose characteristics reflect the large absolute magnitudes of the sample. The composite and the reduced spectra are released to the community through a public repository, and will enable a range of studies addressing outstanding questions regarding the first Gyr of the Universe., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures. We make use of \textit{JWST} medium and broad-band NIRCam imaging, along with ultra-deep MIRI $5.6 \rm \mu m$ imaging, in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (XDF) to identify prominent line emitters at $z\simeq 7-8$. Out of a total of 58 galaxies at $z\simeq 7-8$, we find 18 robust candidates ($\simeq$31\%) for (H$\beta$ + [OIII]) emitters, based on their enhanced fluxes in the F430M and F444W filters, with EW$_{0}$(H$\beta$ +[OIII]) $\simeq 87 - 2100$ {\AA}. Among these emitters, 16 lie in the MIRI coverage area and 12 exhibit a clear flux excess at $5.6 \, \rm \mu m$, indicating the simultaneous presence of a prominent H$\alpha$ emission line with EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$) $\simeq 200-3000$ {\AA}. This is the first time that H$\alpha$ emission can be detected in individual galaxies at $z>7$. The H$\alpha$ line, when present, allows us to separate the contributions of H$\beta$ and [OIII] to the (H$\beta$ +[OIII]) complex, and derive H$\alpha$-based star formation rates (SFRs). We find that in most cases [OIII]/H$\beta > 1$. Instead, two galaxies have [OIII]/H$\beta < 1$, indicating that the NIRCam flux excess is mainly driven by H$\beta$. This could potentially imply extremely low metallicities. Most prominent line emitters are very young starbursts or galaxies on their way to/from the starburst cloud. They make for a cosmic SFR density $\rm log_{10}(\rho_{SFR_{H\alpha}}) \simeq -2.35$, which is about a quarter of the total value ($\rm log_{10}(\rho_{SFR_{tot}}) \simeq -1.76$) at $z\simeq 7-8$. Luminous quasars powered by accretion onto billion solar mass black holes already exist at the epoch of Reionisation, when the Universe was 0.5-1 Gyr old. These objects likely reside in over-dense regions of the Universe, and will grow to form today's giant galaxies. How their huge black holes formed in such short times is debated, particularly as they lie above the local black hole mass-galaxy dynamical mass correlation, thus following the black hole-dominance growth path. It is unknown what slowed down the black hole growth, leading towards the symbiotic growth observed in the local Universe, and when this process started, although black hole feedback is a likely driver. This deadlock is due to the lack of large, homogeneous samples of high-redshift quasars with high-quality, broad-band spectroscopic information. Here we report results from a VLT/X-shooter survey of 30 quasars at redshift 5.8$\le$z$\le$6.6 (XQR-30). About 50% of their spectra reveal broad blue-shifted absorption line (BAL) throughs, tracing powerful ionised winds. The BAL fraction in z$\gtrsim$6 quasars is 2-3 times higher than in quasars at z~2-4.5. XQR-30 BAL quasars exhibit extreme outflow velocities, up to 17% of the light speed, rarely observed at lower redshift. These outflows inject large amounts of energy into the galaxy interstellar medium, which can contrast nuclear gas accretion, slowing down the black-hole growth. The star-formation rate in high-z quasar hosts is generally $>$100 M$_\odot$/yr, so these galaxies are growing at a fast rate. The BAL phase may then mark the beginning of significant feedback, acting first on black hole growth and possibly later on galaxy growth. Reconstruction techniques for intrinsic quasar continua are crucial for the precision study of Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly-$\alpha$) and Lyman-$\beta$ (Ly-$\beta$) transmission at $z>5.0$, where the $\lambda<1215 A$ emission of quasars is nearly completely absorbed. While the number and quality of spectroscopic observations has become theoretically sufficient to quantify Ly-$\alpha$ transmission at $5.05.7$ with IR X-Shooter spectroscopy, obtaining well-characterised measurements for the mean flux transmission at $4.7

Observations of the early Universe suggest that reionization was complete by $z\sim6$, however, the exact history of this process is still unknown. One method for measuring the evolution of the neutral fraction throughout this epoch is via observing the Ly$\alpha$ damping wings of high-redshift quasars. In order to constrain the neutral fraction from quasar observations, one needs an accurate model of the quasar spectrum around Ly$\alpha$, after the spectrum has been processed by its host galaxy but before it is altered by absorption and damping in the intervening IGM. In this paper, we present a novel machine learning approach, using artificial neural networks, to reconstruct quasar continua around Ly$\alpha$. Our QSANNdRA algorithm improves the error in this reconstruction compared to the state-of-the-art PCA-based model in the literature by 14.2% on average, and provides an improvement of 6.1% on average when compared to an extension thereof. In comparison with the extended PCA model, QSANNdRA further achieves an improvement of 22.1% and 16.8% when evaluated on low-redshift quasars most similar to the two high-redshift quasars under consideration, ULAS J1120+0641 at $z=7.0851$ and ULAS J1342+0928 at $z=7.5413$, respectively. Using our more accurate reconstructions of these two $z>7$ quasars, we estimate the neutral fraction of the IGM using a homogeneous reionization model and find $\bar{x}_\mathrm{HI} = 0.25^{+0.05}_{-0.05}$ at $z=7.0851$ and $\bar{x}_\mathrm{HI} = 0.60^{+0.11}_{-0.11}$ at $z=7.5413$. Our results are consistent with the literature and favour a rapid end to reionization.

We experimentally investigate dissipation in mechanical resonators made of a disordered superconducting thin film of Molybdenum-Rhenium(MoRe) alloy. By electrostatically driving the drum with a resonant AC voltage, we detect its motion using a superconducting microwave cavity. From the temperature dependence of mechanical resonance frequencies and quality factors, we find evidence for non-resonant, mechanically active two-level systems (TLSs) limiting its quality factor at low temperature. In addition, we observe a strong suppression of mechanical dissipation at large mechanical driving amplitudes, suggesting an unconventional saturation of the non-resonant TLSs. These new observations shed light on the mechanism of mechanical damping in superconducting drums and routes towards understanding dissipation in such mechanical systems.

We present the combination of optical data from the Science Verification phase of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) with near infrared data from the ESO VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS). The deep optical detections from DES are used to extract fluxes and associated errors from the shallower VHS data. Joint 7-band ($grizYJK$) photometric catalogues are produced in a single 3 sq-deg DECam field centred at 02h26m$-$04d36m where the availability of ancillary multi-wavelength photometry and spectroscopy allows us to test the data quality. Dual photometry increases the number of DES galaxies with measured VHS fluxes by a factor of $\sim$4.5 relative to a simple catalogue level matching and results in a $\sim$1.5 mag increase in the 80\% completeness limit of the NIR data. Almost 70\% of DES sources have useful NIR flux measurements in this initial catalogue. Photometric redshifts are estimated for a subset of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts and initial results, although currently limited by small number statistics, indicate that the VHS data can help reduce the photometric redshift scatter at both $z<0.5$ and $z>1$. We present example DES+VHS colour selection criteria for high redshift Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) at $z\sim0.7$ as well as luminous quasars. Using spectroscopic observations in this field we show that the additional VHS fluxes enable a cleaner selection of both populations with $<$10\% contamination from galactic stars in the case of spectroscopically confirmed quasars and $<0.5\%$ contamination from galactic stars in the case of spectroscopically confirmed LRGs. The combined DES+VHS dataset, which will eventually cover almost 5000 sq-deg, will therefore enable a range of new science and be ideally suited for target selection for future wide-field spectroscopic surveys., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The combination of low mass density, high frequency, and high quality-factor of mechanical resonators made of two-dimensional crystals such as graphene make them attractive for applications in force sensing/mass sensing, and exploring the quantum regime of mechanical motion. Microwave optomechanics with superconducting cavities offers exquisite position sensitivity and enables the preparation and detection of mechanical systems in the quantum ground state. Here, we demonstrate coupling between a multilayer graphene resonator with quality factors up to 220,000 and a high-$\textit{Q}$ superconducting cavity. Using thermo-mechanical noise as calibration, we achieve a displacement sensitivity of 17 fm/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$. Optomechanical coupling is demonstrated by optomechanically induced reflection (OMIR) and absorption (OMIA) of microwave photons. We observe 17 dB of mechanical microwave amplification and signatures of strong optomechanical backaction. We extract the cooperativity $C$, a characterization of coupling strength, quantitatively from the measurement with no free parameters and find $C=8$, promising for the quantum regime of graphene motion.
