As lateral erosion can threaten valuable saltmarsh habitats and their capacity to protect the hinterland from waves and floods, there is a need to understand the mechanisms of erosion. We monitored lateral saltmarsh erosion at high spatiotemporal resolution during a 2.5 year period. We performed terrestrial laser scans (TLS) with centimetric spatial resolution, ca monthly, as well as before and after 2 wind events to assess morphological change of a saltmarsh cliff (<0.8 m in height), and deployed surface elevation dynamics (SED) sensors at 3 locations to obtain daily measurements of the cliff edge position with 2 mm resolution. This was complemented by wind data, and a pressure transducer on the mudflat to obtain time-series of local inundation duration, water depth, wave height, period, power and energy. TLS shows gradual lateral erosion of the marsh edge and surface, and occasional local slumping, with substantial local variation. SED sensor data also reveal that lateral erosion was mostly continuous, with episodes with stronger and weaker local erosion, at all 3 locations, often correlated in space. Correlations between changes in total marsh area and sediment volume of the mudflat-saltmarsh interface from TLS with particularly inundation duration and wind velocity were discussed. At plot level, correlations were not consistent; correlations between the local lateral erosion rates and hydrodynamics/winds were not significant. Results emphasize the importance of common low magnitude events for long-term lateral erosion.

Previous studies have revealed the importance of short-term bed-level change on the long-term development of intertidal ecosystems. One of the recent advancements in the short-term bed dynamics observation is the developments of laser-based surface elevation dynamics (LSED) and acoustic surface elevation dynamics (ASED) sensors. These two sensors are developed to automatically monitor tidally induced bed-level changes, and their measuring windows are during emergent and submerged periods, respectively. So far, there is no direct comparison or joint application of these two sensors. Therefore, in the current study, we first compare their observation precision in both laboratory and field conditions. Results show that both sensors' measurements are in good agreement with the manual measurements in the flume (R20.99) and field (R2 ~0.70), indicating the applicability of each sensor in natural environment. Finally, a coupled system (i.e., combining LSED and ASED) is established in a mangrove wetland and both sensors show good agreement with each other (R2 = 0.69). Results also demonstrate that the coupled observation system can well capture the bed-level change during emergent and submerged conditions, which provides detailed continuous data sets to study the bed-level dynamics within a tidal cycle. Furthermore, large-scale monitoring systems can also be established via mobile network module embedded in the sensor, providing real-time monitoring for bed-level changes, which is valuable to coastal morphological research and vital for detecting deterioration of coastal ecosystems and the services they provide to be able to apply adaptive management.

Salt marshes can contribute to coastal protection, but the magnitude of the protection depends on the width of the marsh. The cross-shore width of the marsh is to a large extent determined by the delicate balance between seaward expansion and landward retreat. The influence of the magnitude of daily occurring mild weather conditions and sediment availability on the variability of salt marsh width has not been systematically assessed. This paper investigates how the magnitude of homogeneous hydrodynamic forcing, combined with sediment availability, affects the biophysical development, and more specifically retreat and expansion of salt marshes. The dynamic extent of the salt marsh is assessed by modeling online-coupled hydrodynamics, morphodynamics and vegetation growth using the numerical Delft3D-Flexible Mesh model, and a vegetation growth module. Simulated patterns around the salt marsh edge resembled field observations, as well as the simulated temporal variability of the lateral position of the salt marsh edge. In the model, the salt marsh extended seaward at low wave forcing (0.00 m; 0.05 m), and retreated landward at higher wave forcing (0.10 m; 0.15 m). With increasing physical stress, the salt marsh edge was found at lower elevations, indicating an unhealthy system with a retreating marsh edge due to vegetation mortality, whereas decreasing physical stresses result in a higher salt marsh edge, enabling expansion. This balance suggests the importance of response time of vegetation to physical stress. Yet, the salt marsh forced with higher waves was able to switch from a retreating extent retrogradational to an expansional behavior as sediment supply increased.

Intertidal salt marshes provide a range of valuable ecosystem services which typically increase with marsh width. Understanding the drivers for salt marsh expansion versus retreat is thus key to managers. Previous research highlights the influence of short-term (daily/event) bed level dynamics on germination and establishment and subsequent vegetation presence. However, more recent literature suggests the importance of medium-term seasonal bed level dynamics on viable seed availability and subsequent vegetation presence. This study aims to assess event-based and seasonal bed level dynamics for vegetation presence in natural and semi-natural salt marshes and to provide generic thresholds for vegetation presence. To gain insight into bed level dynamics, data was used from autonomous Optical and Acoustic Surface Elevation Dynamics sensors (O-SED and A-SED) around the edge of natural and semi-natural salt marshes. Sensors were installed at vegetated and unvegetated measurement station Field observations from 22 O-SEDs deployed at 4 well-established natural salt marshes in the Western Scheldt estuary and 4 O-SEDs at a well-established semi-natural salt marsh in the Wadden Sea were reanalyzed. Six novel A-SEDs were deployed at a pioneer semi-natural salt marsh in the Ems-Dollard Estuary. The measurement duration at all salt marshes was at least 1 year. The A-SED sensor was successfully validated against manual measurements. Furthermore, vegetation data and water level data were obtained. No significant difference was observed between natural and semi-natural salt marshes. However, a significant difference between vegetated and unvegetated measurement stations for short-term bed level dynamics was observed. Vegetation was found to be present at locations restricted by short-term bed level variability smaller than or equal to 12 mm, emphasizing the presence of a short-term threshold. As a response to climate change and sea-level rise, new nourishment strategies for low-lying sandy coasts are developed. These interventions affect the habitat quality of coastal ecosystems for benthic communities. Unraveling the relationship between benthic fauna and their environment facilitates the design of sustainable management strategies for the coastal ecosystem. At the ebb-tidal delta of Ameland, The Netherlands, a unique dataset of 166 benthic and sediment samples is collected and allowed for an investigation of the macrobenthic fauna distribution at the spatial scale of morphological features. The benthic community at the ebb tidal delta is composed of species capable of withstanding the dynamic nature of these sandy coastal ecosystems. Despite the dynamic environment, the geomorphology of the ebb-tidal delta is reflected in the benthic species distribution. Distinct species assemblages were identified, covering a gradient of physical stress from extremely exposed to waves or currents, to relatively low energetic environments such as found on the delta plane seaward of the ebb-tidal delta terminal lobe. This gradient is reflected in the median grain size, organic matter content, and oxygenation of the sediment. A second gradient distinguishes well-sorted, mainly wave-exposed sediments from less well-sorted, mainly current-exposed sites. The functional characteristics of the benthic fauna show a clear contrast between the three most exposed, and the three most sheltered assemblages. Small, short-lived, surface deposit-feeding, highly mobile, burrowing organisms dominate in the most exposed sites, whereas with increasing shelter also larger, long-lived, filter-feeding and sessile organisms become more dominant. The functional characteristics suggest that the fauna of the most exposed sites will likely show a fast recovery of disturbance by sand nourishments. While many studies focus on the persistence of coastal wetlands under climate change, similar predictions are lacking for new wetland establishment, despite being critical to restoration. Recent experiments revealed that marsh seedling establishment is driven by a balance between physical disturbance of bed-level dynamics and seedling root stability. Using machine learning, we quantitatively translate such finding in a new biogeomorphic model to assess marsh establishment extent. This model was validated against multi-year observations of natural seedling-expansion events at typical sites in the Netherlands and China. Subsequently, synthetic modelling experiments underscored that seedling expansion was primarily determined by controllable local conditions (e.g., sediment supply, local wave height and tidal flat bathymetry) rather than uncontrollable climate change factors (e.g., change in sea-level and global wave regime). Thus, science-based local management measures can facilitate coastal wetland restoration despite global climate change, shedding hope for managing a variety of coastal ecosystems under similar stresses.

Use of mangrove ecosystems for coastal flood protection requires reliable predictions of mangrove wave attenuation, especially if this capacity lessens due to storm-induced forest damage. Quantifying and understanding the variation in drag forces and mechanical properties of mangrove vegetation can improve assessment of mangrove protective capacity. We studied five mangrove species common in the subtropical Pearl River Delta, south China. The studied species range from typically landward-occurring to more seaward-occurring pioneer species. We sampled across seven sites in the delta to study the impact of salinity on mechanical properties. We quantified strength and flexibility of branches (branch strength and flexibility related to branch diameter, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity), leaf strength (leaf attachment strength related to leaf size, and leaf mass per area) and drag properties (drag force related to surface area and drag coefficient). For all tested species, larger branch diameters resulted in higher mechanical strength. Larger leaf size resulted in larger peak pulling forces and larger branch surface area resulted in stronger drag forces. Notably, species that generally occur lower in the intertidal zone, where exposure to wind and waves is higher, had relatively stronger branches but more easily detachable leaves. This may be regarded as a damage-avoiding strategy. Across the seven field sites, we found no clear effect of salinity on mangrove mechanical properties. This study provides a mechanistic insight in the storm damage process for individual mangrove trees and a solid base for modeling storm (surge) damage at the forest scale.

Sand waves are dynamic and regular bedforms that are ubiquitous in sandy shelf seas. However, information about the ecological characteristics (e.g., benthic community structure) and their spatial variability within these habitats is very limited. To address this knowledge gap, we undertook a field campaign in summer 2017 to investigate the macrofaunal community composition of a sand wave area off Texel (Dutch part of the North Sea). Sand waves in this area were asymmetrical, with longer gentle slopes that were approximately double in length to the shorter steep slopes. The benthic distribution along the different parts of these sand waves was assessed by collecting a large number of box cores within a transect line (~1 km). We show considerable variability in the individual, biomass and taxon densities, which were all significantly higher on the steeper slopes of the sand waves. These results are consistent with the trends observed in both the abiotic parameters and video analysis that were measured in two recent studies at the same study area. Our results provide valuable insight into the small-scale patterns of variability in asymmetrical dynamic bedform environments, where gentle slopes seem to be primarily controlled by physical forces, while steep slopes are more under biotic control.

Tidal flats provide valuable ecosystem services such as flood protection and carbon sequestration. Erosion and accretion processes govern the ecogeomorphic evolution of intertidal ecosystems (marshes and bare flats) and, hence, substantially affect their valuable ecosystem services. To understand the intertidal ecosystem development, high-frequency bed-level change data are thus needed. However, such datasets are scarce due to the lack of suitable methods that do not involve excessive labour and/or costly instruments. By applying newly developed surface elevation dynamics (SED) sensors, we obtained unique high-resolution daily bed-level change datasets in the period 2013–2017 from 10 marsh–mudflat sites situated in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United Kingdom in contrasting physical and biological settings. At each site, multiple sensors were deployed for 9–20 months to ensure sufficient spatial and temporal coverage of highly variable bed-level change processes. The bed-level change data are provided with synchronized hydrodynamic data, i.e. water level, wave height, tidal current velocity, medium sediment grain size (D50), and chlorophyll a level at four sites. This dataset has revealed diverse spatial morphodynamics patterns over daily to seasonal scales, which are valuable to theoretical and model development. On the daily scale, this dataset is particularly instructive, as it includes a number of storm events, the response to which can be detected in the bed-level change observations. Such data are rare but useful to study tidal flat response to highly energetic conditions.The dataset is available from 4TU.ResearchData (https://doi.org/10.4121/12693254.v4; Hu et al., 2020), which is expected to expand with additional SED sensor data from ongoing and planned surveys.

The behavior of asymmetrical bedforms, which include many tidal sand waves, is challenging to understand. They are of particular interest since they are mostly located within areas prone to offshore engineering activities. Most experimental investigations regarding asymmetrical bedforms consider the riverine environment, are limited to a single sand wave or a few scattered ones, and focus only on differences between crest and trough. Hardly any information is available on sediment compositional changes along asymmetrical tidal sand waves, despite their abundance offshore. An asymmetrical sand wave field located off the coast of Texel Island in the North Sea was studied in June and October 2017. A total of 102 sediment samples were collected over two seasons along a single transect that covered five complete sand waves to measure the grain size composition, organic carbon concentration, chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration, and sediment permeability. We found significant variations in these sediment parameters between the sand wave trough, crest, and gentle and steep slopes, including a difference in permeability of more than 2-fold, as well as a difference in median grain size exceeding 65 µm. Based on these characteristics, a sand wave can be divided into two discrete halves: gentle slope + crest and steep slope + trough. Our results indicate a distinct sediment-sorting process along the Texel sand waves, with a significant difference between the two halves of each sand wave. These data could serve as input for process-based modeling of the link between sediment-sorting processes and seabed morphodynamics, necessary to design offshore engineering projects.

Foreshores consisting of both bare tidal flats and vegetated salt marshes are found worldwide and they are well studied for their wave attenuating capacity. However, most studies only focus on the small scale: just some isolated locations in space and only up to several years in time. In order to stimulate the implementation of foreshores serving as reliable coastal defense on a large scale, we need to quantify the decadal wave attenuating capacity of the foreshore on the scale of an estuary. To study this, a unique bathymetrical dataset is analyzed, covering the geometry of the Westerschelde estuary (The Netherlands) over a time-span of 65 years. From this dataset, six study sites were extracted (both sheltered sites and exposed sites to the prevailing wind direction) and divided into transects. This resulted in 36 transects covering the entire foreshore (composed of the bare tidal flat and the vegetated salt marsh). The wave attenuation of all transects under daily conditions (with and without vegetation) and design conditions (i.e. events statistically occurring once every 10,000 years) was modelled.Overall, the spatial variability of the geometry of a single foreshore was observed to be much larger than the temporal variability. Temporal changes in salt marsh width did not follow the variability of the entire foreshore. Both under daily and design conditions, vegetation contributes to decreasing wave energy and decreases the variability of incoming wave energy, thereby decreasing the wave load on the dike. The southern foreshores, sheltered from the prevailing wind direction, were more efficient in wave attenuation than the exposed northern foreshores. A linear relation between marsh width and wave attenuation over a period of 65 years was observed at all marshes. The present study provides insights needed to calculate the length of a salt marsh to obtain a desired minimum wave attenuating capacity.

Flood risks are increasing worldwide due to climate change and ongoing economic and demographic development in coastal areas. Salt marshes can function as vegetated foreshores that reduce wave loads on coastal structures such as dikes and dams, thereby mitigating current and future flood risk. This paper aims to quantify long-term (100 years) flood risk reduction by salt marshes. Dike-foreshore configurations are assessed by coupled calculations of wave energy dissipation over the foreshore, sediment accretion under sea level rise, the probability of dike failure, and life-cycle costs. Rising sea levels lead to higher storm waves, and increasing probabilities of dike failure by wave overtopping. This study shows that marsh elevation change due to sediment accretion mitigates the increase in wave height, thereby elongating the lifetime of a dike-foreshore system. Further, different human interventions on foreshores are assessed in this paper: realization of a vegetated foreshore via nourishment, addition of a detached earthen breakwater, addition of an unnaturally high zone, or foreshore build-up by application of brushwood dams that enhance sediment accretion. The performance of these strategies is compared to dike heightening for the physical boundary conditions at an exposed dike along the Dutch Wadden Sea. Cost-effectiveness depends on three main factors. First, wave energy dissipation, which is lower for salt marshes with a natural elevation in the intertidal zone, when compared to foreshores with a high zone or detached breakwater. Second, required costs for construction and maintenance. Continuous maintenance costs and delayed effects on flood risk make sheltering structures less attractive from a flood risk perspective. Third, economic value of the protected area, where foreshores are particularly cost-effective for low economic value. Concluding, life-cycle cost analysis demonstrates that, within certain limits, foreshore construction can be more cost-effect

Recently, the use of salt marshes in front of hard structures is increasingly proposed as a more sustainable coastal protection measure. Yet, salt marsh restoration and creation is often hampered by the lack of a thorough understanding of initial vegetation establishment. Recent studies highlight the importance of bed level change for salt marsh development. In this study we continue the examination of the impact of bed level change on salt marsh development, focussing on the prediction of salt marsh establishment and the implications for coastal management. First, a test with Spartina anglica seedlings (Cordgrass) in a wave flume showed that long-term (seasonal) bed level change is more important for seedling survival than direct wave impact at the shoot. Therefore, we subsequently incorporated bed level change in the Windows of Opportunity (WoO) framework. Lastly, this revised WoO framework was applied to the design of the Marconi pioneer salt marsh (The Netherlands). Combining the WoO framework with a morphodynamic model (Delft3D) showed its potential for salt marsh design. The framework can be used to determine whether salt marsh establishment is possible, to find out which conditions are limiting establishment and to design engineering measures creating the conditions that facilitate salt marsh establishment.

This paper aims to fundamentally assess the resilience of salt marsh-mudflat systems under sea level rise. We applied an open-source schematized 2D area model (Delft3D) that couples intertidal flow, wave-action, sediment transport, geomorphological development with a population dynamics approach including temporal and spatial growth of vegetation and bio-accumulation. Wave-action maintains a high sediment concentration on the mudflat while the tidal motion transports the sediments within the vegetated marsh areas during flood. The marsh-mudflat system attained dynamic equilibrium within 120 years. Sediment deposition and bio-accumulation within the marsh make the system initially resilient to sea level rise scenarios. However, after 50–60 years the marsh system starts to drown with vegetated-levees being the last surviving features. Biomass accumulation and sediment supply are critical determinants for the marsh drowning rate and survival. Our model methodology can be applied to assess the resilience of vegetated coast lines and combined engineering solutions for long-term sustainability.

Bed level dynamics at the interface of the salt marsh and tidal flat have been highlighted as a key factor connecting the long‐term biogeomorphological development of the marsh to large‐scale physical forcing. Hence, we aim to obtain insight into the factors confining the location of the marsh edge (i.e., boundary between tidal flat and salt marsh). A unique data set was collected, containing measurements of daily bed level changes (i.e., integrative result of physical forcing and sediment properties) at six intertidal transects in the North Sea area. Moreover, various biophysical parameters were measured, such as sediment characteristics, waves, inundation time, and chlorophyll‐a levels. The data show that both bed level change and waves decreased from the lower intertidal flat toward the marsh edge and further diminished inside the marsh. However, no direct general relation was found between waves and bed level change. Bed level change inside the marsh was always small, regardless of wave energy. By combining the data sets, we demonstrate that the location of the lower marsh edge is restricted by two interacting factors: inundation time and bed level change. For vegetation establishment to withstand longer inundation stress, which slows down plant growth, more stable bed levels are required so that plants are not heavily disturbed. Conversely, to withstand more dynamic bed levels that disturbs plant growth, lower inundation stress is needed, so that plants grow fast enough to recover from the stress. The results suggest that bed level change is important in determining the position of the marsh edge.

The sandy seabed of shallow coastal shelf seas displays morphological patterns of various dimensions. The seabed also harbors a rich ecosystem. Increasing pressure from human‐induced disturbances necessitates further study on drivers of benthic community distributions over morphological patterns. Moreover, a greater understanding of the sand ripple distribution over tidal sand waves may improve morphological model predictions. Here we analyzed the biotic abundance and ripple morphology in sand wave troughs and crests using video transects. We found that both the epibenthos and endobenthos are significantly more abundant in sand wave troughs, where ripples are less abundant and more irregularly shaped. Finally, we show that camera systems are relatively quick and effective tools to study biotic spatial patterns in relation to seabed morphology.

One of the services provided by coastal ecosystems is wave attenuation by vegetation, and subsequent reduction of wave loads on flood defense structures. Therefore, stability of vegetation under wave forcing is an important factor to consider. This paper presents a model which determines the wave load that plant stems can withstand before they break or fold. This occurs when wave-induced bending stresses exceed the flexural strength of stems. Flexural strength was determined by means of three-point-bending tests, which were carried out for two common salt marsh species: Spartina anglica (common cord-grass) and Scirpus maritimus (sea club-rush), at different stages in the seasonal cycle. Plant stability is expressed in terms of a critical orbital velocity, which combines factors that contribute to stability: high flexural strength, large stem diameter, low vegetation height, high flexibility and a low drag coefficient. In order to include stem breakage in the computation of wave attenuation by vegetation, the stem breakage model was implemented in a wave energy balance. A model parameter was calibrated so that the predicted stem breakage corresponded with the wave-induced loss of biomass that occurred in the field. The stability of Spartina is significantly higher than that of Scirpus, because of its higher strength, shorter stems, and greater flexibility. The model is validated by applying wave flume tests of Elymus athericus (sea couch), which produced reasonable results with regards to the threshold of folding and overall stem breakage percentage, despite the high flexibility of this species. Application of the stem breakage model will lead to a more realistic assessment of the role of vegetation for coastal protection.
