The evolution of local defects such as dislocations and cracks often determines the performance of engineering materials. For a proper description and understanding of these phenomena, one needs to descend to a very small scale, at which the discreteness of the material emerges. Fully-resolved discrete numerical models often suffer from excessive computing expenses when used for application-scale considerations. More efficient multiscale simulation procedures are thus called for, capable of capturing the most significant microscopic phenomena while being computationally tractable. Two broad classes of methods are available in the literature. The first class considers the fully-resolved discrete system, which is subsequently reduced through suitable mathematical tools such as projection and reduced integration. The second class first homogenizes the discrete system into an equivalent continuum formulation, into which the main phenomena are added through specific enrichments. This paper provides a thorough comparison of the two different modeling philosophies in terms of their theory, accuracy, and performance. To this goal, two typical representatives are adopted: the Quasicontinuum method for the first class, and an effective continuum with an embedded cohesive zone model for the second class. Two examples are employed to demonstrate capabilities and limitations of both approaches: dislocation propagation and pile-up against a coherent phase boundary, and a three-point bending test of a concrete specimen with crack propagation. In both cases, the accuracy of the two methods is compared against the fully-resolved discrete reference model. It is shown that whereas continuum models with embedded cohesive zones offer good performance to accuracy ratios, they might fail to capture unexpected mechanical behavior. The interaction of dislocations with phase boundaries is a complex phenomenon, that is far from being fully understood. A 2D Peierls-Nabarro finite element (PN-FE) model for studying edge dislocation transmission across fully coherent and non-damaging phase boundaries was recently proposed. This paper brings a new dimension to the complexity by extending the PN-FE model with a dedicated cohesive zone model for the phase boundary. With the proposed model, a natural interplay between dislocations, external boundaries and the phase boundary, including decohesion of that boundary, is provided. It allows one to study the competition between dislocation transmission and phase boundary decohesion. Commonly, the interface potentials required for glide plane behaviour and phase boundary decohesion are established through atomistic simulations. They are corresponding to the misfit energy intrinsic to a system of two bulks of atoms that are translated rigidly with respect to each other. It is shown that the blind utilisation of these potentials in zero-thickness interfaces (as used in the proposed model) may lead to a large quantitative error. Accordingly, for physical consistency, the potentials need to be reduced towards zero-thickness potentials. In this paper a linear elastic reduction is adopted. With the reduced potentials for the glide plane and the phase boundary, the competition between dislocation transmission and phase boundary decohesion is studied for an 8-dislocation pile-up system. Results reveal a strong influence of the phase contrast in material properties as well as the phase boundary toughness on the outcome of this competition. In the case of crack nucleation, the crack length shows an equally strong dependency on these properties.

This paper evaluates qualitatively as well as quantitatively the accuracy of a recently proposed Peierls--Nabarro Finite Element (PN-FE) model for dislocations by a direct comparison with an equivalent molecular statics simulation. To this end, a two-dimensional microstructural specimen subjected to simple shear is considered, consisting of a central soft phase flanked by two hard-phase regions. A hexagonal atomic structure with equal lattice spacing is adopted, the interactions of which are described by the Lennard--Jones potential with phase specific depths of its energy well. During loading, edge dislocation dipoles centred in the soft phase are introduced, which progress towards the phase boundaries, where they pile up. Under a sufficiently high external shear load, the leading dislocation is eventually transmitted into the harder phase. The homogenized PN-FE model is calibrated to an atomistic model in terms of effective elasticity constants and glide plane properties as obtained from simple uniform deformations. To study the influence of different formulations of the glide plane potential, multiple approaches are employed, ranging from a simple sinusoidal function of the tangential disregistry to a complex model that couples the influence of the tangential and the normal disregistries. The obtained results show that, qualitatively, the dislocation structure, displacement, strain fields, and the dislocation evolution are captured adequately. The simplifications of the PN-FE model lead, however, to some discrepancies within the dislocation core. Such discrepancies play a dominant role in the dislocation transmission process, which thus cannot quantitatively be captured properly. Small-scale plasticity problems are often characterised by different patterning behaviours ranging from macroscopic down to the atomistic scale. In successful models of such complex behaviour, its origin lies within non-convexity of the governing free energy functional. A common approach to solve such non-convex problems numerically is by regularisation through a viscous formulation. This, however, may require the system to be overdamped and hence potentially has a strong impact on the obtained results. To avoid this side-effect, this paper addresses the treatment of the full non-convexity by an appropriate numerical solution algorithm -- the truncated Newton method. The presented method is a double iterative approach which successively generates quadratic approximations of the energy landscape and minimises these by an inner iterative scheme, based on the conjugate gradient method. The inner iterations are terminated when either a sufficient energy decrease is achieved or, to incorporate the treatment of non-convexity, a direction of negative curvature is encountered. If the latter never happens, the method reduces to Newton--Raphson iterations, solved by the conjugate gradient method, with a subsequent line search. However, in the case of a non-convex energy it avoids convergence to a saddle point and adds robustness. The stability of the truncated Newton method is demonstrated for the, highly non-convex, Peierls-Nabarro model, solved within a Finite Element framework. A potential drop in efficiency due to an occasional near singular Hessian is remedied by a trust region like extension, which is physically based on the Peierls-Nabarro disregistry profile. The result is an efficient numerical scheme with a high stability that is independent of any regularisation.

To study the nanoscopic interaction between edge dislocations and a phase boundary within a two-phase microstructure the effect of the phase contrast on the internal stress field due to the dislocations needs to be taken into account. For this purpose a 2D semi-discrete model is proposed in this paper. It consists of two distinct phases, each with its specific material properties, separated by a fully coherent and non-damaging phase boundary. Each phase is modelled as a continuum enriched with a Peierls--Nabarro (PN) dislocation region, confining dislocation motion to a discrete plane, the glide plane. In this paper, a single glide plane perpendicular to and continuous across the phase boundary is considered. Along the glide plane bulk induced shear tractions are balanced by glide plane shear tractions based on the classical PN model. The model's ability to capture dislocation obstruction at phase boundaries, dislocation pile-ups and dislocation transmission is studied. Results show that the phase contrast in material properties (e.g. elastic stiffness, glide plane properties) alone creates a barrier to the motion of dislocations from a soft to a hard phase. The proposed model accounts for the interplay between dislocations, external boundaries and phase boundary and thus represents a suitable tool for studying edge dislocation--phase boundary interaction in two-phase microstructures.
