Abstract

Rivers serve many societal functions and are one of the most intensively human influenced ecosystems worldwide, and, due to their importance, are included under the monitoring programs of the Water Framework Directive across Europe. Macroinvertebrates play an important role when monitoring running waters for the assessment of their environmental quality due to their reliability as bioindicators and utility in long-term studies. Macroinvertebrates do not constitute a systematic unit but they are formed by a set of different taxa, grouped according to taxonomic ranks, size and habitat preferences. They represent the base of the aquatic food chain, serving as a food source for amphibians, birds, reptiles, fish and humans, and contributing in the organic matter processing. Despite the large amount of data collected on Italian river macroinvertebrates and the increased interest in the study of this group, only few data are available for research scientist and managers. In this paper, we collected and homogenized knowledge on the presence, distribution and abundances of macroinvertebrates taxa inhabiting the River Po catchment (Northern Italy) in the last decade. The data set includes 130,727 records collected between 2007 and 2018 including 143 taxa of macroinvertebrates, mostly identified at family rank level. Moreover, the data set provides information on the geographic distribution of these families and their abundance by sub-catchment, altitude, meso- and micro-habitat.

Abstract

La caratterizzazione della tossicità potenziale dei sedimenti degli invasi è un'informazione essenziale per programmare adeguatamente le operazioni che implicano il rilascio a valle del materiale depositato e garantire così la funzionalità delle opere di presa delle dighe e il ripristino della capacità utile. È infatti necessario garantire la tutela delle comunità acquatiche nei tratti fluviali a valle, ai sensi della Direttiva Europea sulle Acque 2000/60/EC. Oltre a minimizzare l'impatto fisico, è necessario valutare anche il potenziale effetto ecotossicologico determinato dalla presenza di microinquinanti nei sedimenti. In assenza di riferimenti normativi per i sedimenti d'acqua dolce, l'approccio più cautelativo è quello del peso dell'evidenza sperimentale basata sull'analisi chimica, ecotossicologica, ecologica e, in alcuni casi, anche attraverso la valutazione del bioaccumulo. In questo contributo viene mostrata la caratterizzazione dei sedimenti di un invaso lombardo ai fini della fluitazione secondo il "Protocollo per la caratterizzazione chimica ed ecotossicologica dei sedimenti degli invasi" (PrATo), in fase di sperimentazione.

4. Anthropogenic pollution drives the bacterial resistome in a complex freshwater ecosystem.

Abstract

Aquatic ecosystems in anthropogenically impacted areas are important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) of allochthonous origin. However, the dynamics of the different ARGs within the bacterial communities of lakes and rivers, as well as the factors that drive their selection, are not completely understood. In this study, we analysed the fate of the bacterial resistome (total content of ARGs and of metal resistance genes, MRGs) for a period of six months (summer-winter) in a continuum lake-river-lake system (Lake Varese, River Bardello, Lake Maggiore) in Northern Italy, by shotgun metagenomics. The metagenomic data were then compared with chemical, physical and microbiological data, to infer the role of anthropogenic pressure in the different sampling stations. ARGs and MRGs were more abundant and diverse in the River Bardello, characterised by the highest anthropogenic pollution. The date of sampling influenced ARGs and MRGs, with higher abundances in summer (August) than in fall or in winter, when the impact of the treated wastewater discharge in the river was limited by a higher water flow from Lake Varese. ARG and MRG abundances were significantly correlated and they co-occurred in the main network analysis modules with potential pathogenic bacteria. Different levels of anthropogenic impact selectively promoted specific ARGs while others, generally abundant in waters, were not affected by anthropogenic pressure. Reducing the level of anthropogenic pressure resulted in a rapid decrease of most ARGs. From our results, the role of anthropogenic pressure in promoting the spread of specific antibiotic resistances and of potential pathogens in aquatic ecosystem becomes clear.
