Abstract

In this study, composites containing polylactide and carbonate lake sediment in concentrations of 2.5, 5, 10, and 15% by weight were prepared by a 3D printing method. The material for 3D printing was obtained by directly diluting the masterbatch on an injection moulder to the desired concentrations, and after granulation, it was extruded into a filament. The material prepared thusly was used to print standardised samples for mechanical testing. To compare the mechanical properties of the composites obtained by 3D printing and injection moulding, two sets of tests were performed, i.e., mechanical tests (tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact strength) and hydrophobic–hydrophilic surface character testing. The degree of composite waste in the 3D printing was also calculated. Mechanical and surface tests were performed for both systems conditioned at room temperature and after accelerated ageing in a weathering chamber. The study showed differences in the properties of composites obtained by 3D printing. Sedimentary fillers improved the hydrophobicity of the systems compared with pure PLA, but it was not a linear relationship. The PLA/CLS sedB composite had higher strength parameters, especially after ageing in a weathering chamber. This is due to its composition, in which, in addition to calcite and silica, there are also aluminosilicates, causing a strengthening of the PLA matrix.

Abstract

The immense growth of data traffic that traverses modern networks, calls for immediate solutions to tackle the challenges that arise in terms of speed, capacity, cost and energy efficiency. This manuscript outlines the key technological aspects of the PICaboo project, that aims to develop novel building blocks and photonic integrated circuits for the next generation of optical metro and access networks enhanced with optical signal processing functionalities exploiting the generic foundry model approach.

18. ML approaches for OTDR diagnoses in passive optical networks—event detection and classification: ways for ODN branch assignment

Abstract

An ML-supported diagnostics concept is introduced and demonstrated to detect and classify events on OTDR traces for application on a PON optical distribution network. We can also associate events with ODN branches by using deployment data of the PON. We analyze an ensemble classifier and neural networks, the usage of synthetic OTDR-like traces, and measured data for training. In our proof-of-concept, we show a precision of 98% and recall of 95% using an ensemble classifier on measured OTDR traces and a successful mapping to ODN branches or groups of branches. For emulated data, we achieve an average precision of 70% and an average recall of 91%.

19. Benefits of flexibility in current and future IM-DD based TDM-PON [Invited]

Abstract

Due to continuously emerging high bandwidth applications, research and standardization of time division multiplexed passive optical networks (TDM-PONs) have focused on increasing the peak bitrate. However, increasing the bitrate while supporting the stringent optical power budget of a PON becomes increasingly challenging because of the larger chromatic dispersion penalties as well as reduced receiver sensitivity when the bitrate of the intensity modulation with direct-detection (IM-DD) based PON is increased. Also, increasing bitrate generally causes higher power consumption, which leads to more challenging thermal designs and misalignment with environmental targets. In this paper we give an overview of flexible concepts that can help achieve the required optical power budget and support reduced power consumption of a future IM-DD based TDM-PON. We demonstrate that a flexible PON can provide an increased overall throughput or an extended reach and power budget with the use of flexible modulation formats, probabilistic and geometric shaping, and flexible rate forward error correction (FEC). Another dimension of flexibility in the form of a configurable optical distribution network (ODN) is described and its merits and challenges are discussed. Flexible concepts based on interleaving of FEC codewords can align signal processing like FEC decoding and the protocol processing closer to the user-rate of an optical network unit (ONU), which leads to reduced power consumption. Flexibility based on multiple channels based on wavelength multiplexing or spatial multiplexing enables optimization of the power consumption to the amount of traffic on the PON. Several flexible concepts have already been adopted in the PON standards. We highlight flexible gain FEC for upstream 50G PON, the transmitter dispersion eye closure (TDEC) metric, and the flexible split-ratio ODN for power saving. Flexible modulation has not been adopted yet in PON standards, but it is expected that flexibility is more and more needed to support the performance, cost effectiveness, and power conservation of future optical access systems.

20. Dispersion-Tolerant 100 Gb/s Downstream PON With 38 dB Power Budget and Low-Complex Equalization

Abstract

A 100 Gb/s Intensity Modulated Direct Detection dispersion tolerant downstream PON with 38 dB power budget based on optical duobinary using low-complex equalization is experimentally demonstrated. Optical duobinary transmission using avalanche photodiodes in combination with Electrical Duobinary Detection is shown for the first time. This combination is very tolerant to bandwidth limitations at both the transmitter and the receiver. Results are further improved upon by using a wider bandwidth Semiconductor Optical Amplifier -filter- P-type Intrinsic N-type receiver. Optical duobinary transmission also permits transmission at higher optical powers without incurring a meaningful penalty. The results show the promise of using the Optical Duobinary scheme for future very high speed cost-effective PON systems beyond 50 Gb/s.

We demonstrate operation of a linear burst-mode TIA integrated with a commercial lensed APD supporting 100-Gbit/s PAM-4 with OMA sensitivity of −15.8-dBm and 50-Gbit/s NRZ with OMA sensitivity of −23.7-dBm. Dynamic range exceeding 21.7-dB is achieved for NRZ and 15.4-dB for PAM-4 reception.

Abstract

Resilience is a relatively new conceptual category used when considering security and defence. It means adaptability, resistance to threats, flexibility of response, and the ability to regenerate. The term resilience has been present in English for a long time, as evidenced by the presence of this term in old dictionaries of the English language. Originally, its meaning related to medicine and mechanics, a bit later – to human psychology, and today it has extended to the issues of resilience of cities, societies, and entire countries. An attempt at applying this new conceptualisation is associated with the recognition that the current security paradigm is losing its relevance in a rapidly changing and complex world. The changing scale of threats makes it necessary to search for new theoretical foundations for creating an effective defence policy. However, the theory of resilience has not yet been fully formulated, at best, only its theorem has. The aim of this article is to present the significance of this conceptual category, to indicate the theoretical concepts underlying this conceptualisation in social sciences, and to reflect on the value of the concept of resilience for security and defence. Abstract

Artykuł poświęcony jest ogólnemu zarysowaniu problematyki robotyzacji ratownictwa, która w krajach anglosaskich zyskała status wyodrębnionej dyscypliny badań oraz inżynierii. Rola robotyki ratownictwa będzie rosnąć, szczególnie w takich obszarach jak: pożarnictwo, niesienie pomocy ofiarom katastrof, akcje poszukiwawcze, a także w transporcie środków medycznych i ratunkowych w różnych, trudnych warunkach terenowych. W przyszłości zwiększy się znaczenie robotów służących do ewakuacji poszkodowanych ze stref zagrożenia, szczególnie, że mogą być one stosowane zarówno na ziemi, w powietrzu oraz nad i pod wodą. The paper is devoted to the general outline of the issue of rescue robotization, which has already gained the status of a separate research and engineering discipline in Anglo- Saxon countries. The role of rescue robotics will grow, especially in areas such as firefighting, disaster relief, or search operations, as well as in the transport of medical and rescue equipment in various difficult field conditions. In the future, the importance of robots used to evacuate victims from danger zones will increase further, especially in view of the fact that they can be used both on the ground, in the air, and above and under water. Der Artikel ist der allgemeinen Übersicht der Robotisierung des Rettungsdienstes gewidmet, der in den angelsächsischen Ländern den Status eines getrennten Forschungsgebiets und Ingenieurie erlangte. Die Rolle der Rettungsdienstrobotik wird immer größer sein, besonders auf solchen Gebieten, wie: Brandbekämpfung, Hilfe den Katastrophenopfern, Suchoperationen, als auch im Transport der medizinischen und Rettungsmittel unter verschiedenen schwierigen Feldbedingungen. In Zukunft gewinnen die Roboter an Bedeutung, die zur Evakuierung der Geschädigten aus den gefährdeten Gebieten dienen, besonders, dass sie sowohl am Boden, in der Luft, als auch über und unter dem Wasser verwendet werden können. В статье обозначены общие очертания проблематики развития робототехниче- ских систем в работе спасательных служб, которая в англосаксонских государствах получила статус самостоятельной научно-технической дисциплины. Роль робото- техники при проведении аварийно-спасательных работ будет расти, особенно в таких областях, как: пожаротушение, оказание помощи жертвам стихийных бедствий, поисковые операции, транспортировка медицинского и спасательного оборудования в сложных условиях. В будущем будет возрастать значение робо- тотехники, используемой для эвакуации пострадавших из опасных зон, а роботы будут применяться на земле, в воздухе, над и под водой.
