The current research focuses on the analysis of fly ash cenospheres (FACs), a waste generated in coal-fired power plants, and the possibilities of using them in refractory castables. Cenospheres are micro-scale (~50–400 µm) spherical structures derived from fly ash, predominantly composed of silica and alumina oxides (86.7%). Their distinctive morphology and characteristics make them highly advantageous for a diverse array of applications, notably as lightweight fillers and nondegradable pore-forming agents. Furthermore, cenospheres have the potential to contribute significantly to the performance of refractory castables when incorporated into compositions with calcium aluminate cement (CAC). FAC XRD analysis revealed that FACs mainly consist of mullite along with cristobalite, which forms at higher temperatures. Furthermore, the study examined the impact of FACs on the properties of medium cement castable (MCC), especially durability, when 3%, 5%, and 7% of fine fireclay were replaced by FACs; 5% of FACs were found to reduce the density of refractory castables and decrease the cold crushing strength by approximately 6%, but it increased the resistance to thermal shock by approximately 75% and 43%, depending on the thermal treatment temperature, 950 °C and 1100 °C, respectively, and improved resistance to alkali corrosion. Refractory materials containing calcium aluminate cement (CAC) are commonly used in the metallurgical and petrochemical industries due to their exceptional mechanical resistance, even at temperatures exceeding 1000 °C, and do not require additional reinforcement. This study seeks to advance this practice by developing ultra-high-performance structures that offer building protection against fire and explosions. Such structures require bar reinforcement to withstand accidental tension stresses, and the bond performance becomes crucial. However, the compressive strength of these materials may not correlate with their bond resistance under high-temperature conditions. This study investigates the bond behavior of ribbed stainless austenitic steel bars in refractory materials typical for structural projects. The analysis considers three chamotte-based compositions, i.e., a conventional castable (CC) with 25 wt% CAC, a medium-cement castable (MCC) with 12 wt% CAC, a low-cement castable (LCC), and a low-cement bauxite-based castable (LCB); the LCC and LCB castables contain 7 wt% CAC. The first three refractory compositions were designed to achieve a cold compressive strength (CCS) of 100 MPa, while the LCB mix proportions were set to reach a CCS of 150 MPa. Mechanical and pull-out tests were conducted after treatment at 400 °C, 600 °C, 800 °C, and 1000 °C; reference specimens were not subjected to additional temperature treatment. This study used X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods to capture the material alterations. The test results indicated that the bonding resistance, expressed in terms of the pull-out deformation energy, did not directly correlate with the compressive strength, supporting the research hypothesis. The influence of aluminosilicate pozzolanic waste, specifically spent fluid catalytic cracking waste (FCCW) and metakaolin waste (MK) from the expanded glass industry, on the properties of hardened Portland cement paste were analysed. The study involved replacing part of cement with FCCW and MK and observing their impact on the hydration, microstructure, density, and compressive strength of hardened cement paste. Various analysis methods were employed, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), to understand the changes in the structure of the hardened cement paste during hydration. The findings revealed that FCCW tends to accelerate the cement hydration process due to its high surface area and pozzolanic activity. Notably, the formation of portlandite crystals was observed on FCCW particle surfaces in a specific direction. These crystals appeared smaller and developed in different directions in compositions containing a composite binder with mixture of FCCW and MK in a ratio 1:1. This could be influenced by pozzolanic reactions activated by fine particles of MK and the formation of calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) and calcium alumino silicate hydrates (C-A-S-H) in the presence of portlandite. The XRD and TG results indicated that the specimens containing a composite binder exhibited the least amount of portlandite. This study examines the impact of the impregnation of fireclay-based conventional (CC) and medium-cement castables (MCCs) with liquid sodium silicate glass under vacuum conditions. The goal is to assess how this treatment affects the physical and mechanical properties and durability (alkali and thermal shock resistance) of these castables used in biomass combustion boilers, where they are exposed to temperatures up to 1100 °C. The research work employs standard test methods to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties. Additionally, advanced techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and specific tests for alkali resistance and thermal shock resistance are used. The research findings suggest that impregnation with sodium silicate glass under vacuum significantly enhances the alkali resistance of both CC and MCCs. This improvement is primarily due to the reduction in porosity and the increase in density. SEM images reveal that the impregnated samples are coated with a glassy layer and the pores are partially filled with sodium silicate. Tests for alkali resistance demonstrate the formation of a protective glassy layer (with a thickness of 0.9–1.5 mm) on the castable surfaces, thereby reducing the further penetration of alkali into deeper layers of the samples. Currently, hydrogen and electric drives used in various means of transport is a leading topic in many respects. This article discusses the most important aspects of the operation of vehicles with electric drives (passenger cars) and hydrogen drives. In both cases, the official reason for using both drives is the possibility of independence from fossil fuel supplies, especially oil. The desire for independence is mainly dictated by political considerations. This article discusses the acquisition of basic raw materials for the construction of lithium-ion batteries in electric cars, as well as methods for obtaining hydrogen as a fuel. The widespread use of electric passenger cars requires the construction of a network of charging stations. This article shows that, taking into account the entire production process of electric cars, including lithium-ion batteries, the argument that they are ecological cannot be used. Additionally, it was indicated that there is no concept for the use of used accumulator batteries. If hydrogen drives are used in trains, there is no need to build the traction network infrastructure and then continuously monitor its technical condition and perform the necessary repairs. Of course, the necessary hydrogen tanks must be built, but there must be similar tanks to store oil for diesel locomotives. This paper also deals with other possibilities of hydrogen application for transformational usage, e.g., the use of combustion engines driven with liquid hydrogen. Unfortunately, an optimistic approach to this issue does not allow for a critical view of the whole matter. In public discussion, there is no room for scientific arguments and emotions to dominate. The main objective of this paper was to investigate the heat transfer of modified lightweight refractory concrete at the microscopic scale. In this work, such material was treated as a porous composite based on the compound of calcium aluminate cement and aluminosilicate cenospheres. The presence of air inclusions within the cenospheres was an essential factor in the reduction in thermal performance. Due to the intricacy of the subject investigated, our research employed numerical, theoretical, and experimental approaches. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging was performed to study the composite microstructure with a special focus on geometry, dimensions, and the distribution of cenospheres. Based on the experimental analysis, simplified geometrical models were generated to reproduce the main features of the composite matrix and cenospheres. A finite element framework was used to determine the effective thermal conductivity of such domains as well as the thermal stresses generated in the sample during the heat flow. A considerable difference in thermal properties was revealed by comparing the simulation results of the pure composite matrix and the samples, indicating a varying arrangement of cenosphere particles. The numerical results were complemented by a theoretical study that applied analytical models derived from the two-phase mixture theory—parallel and Landauer. A satisfactory agreement between numerical and theoretical results was achieved; however, the extension of both presented approaches is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since welding technology is currently used to assemble the frame of driver's seats, it is important to develop laser welding technology for steel and aluminium. For this reason, the purpose of the present work was to examine the structure and selected properties of aluminium-steel joints using the example of an EN AW-6060 aluminium alloy and DC04 low-alloy steel welded in laser technology. Overlapping joints were made, weld type -following the hole laser welding method -laser beam (LB) using a high power disk laser (TRUMPF TruDisk3302), in which the active medium is a yttrium-aluminium crystal (YAG). Metallographic microstructure investigations were carried out using a light microscope from Carl Zeiss - Observer Z1m, and the weld microstructures were investigated using an SEM Supra 35 microscope, also from Carl Zeiss. The chemical composition analysis in micro-areas was carried out using an X-ray energy dispersion spectrometer from EDAX, which was a part of the SEM Supra 35. The hardness of the substrate material and the welded area was measured following the Vickers method using an FM-ARS 9000 micro hardness tester from Tokyo, Japan. It was found that there is a potential for commercial use of laser welding to make a low-carbon steel-aluminium alloy joint. During the formation of the weld in its microstructure, intermetallic compounds of the FexAly type were created, which significantly reduced the mechanical and plastic properties of the joint. The hardness of the weld created wasabout seven times higher than that of DC04 carbon steel.
