Abstract

Long-term time series are a fundamental prerequisite to understanding and detecting climate shifts and trends. Understanding the complex interplay of changing ocean variables and the biological implication for marine ecosystems requires extensive data collection for monitoring, hypothesis testing, and validation of modelling products. In marginal seas, such as the Mediterranean Sea, there are still monitoring gaps, both in time and in space. To contribute to filling these gaps, an extensive dataset of dissolved inorganic nutrient observations (nitrate, phosphate, and silicate) was collected between 2004 and 2017 in the western Mediterranean Sea and subjected to rigorous quality control techniques to provide to the scientific community a publicly available, long-term, quality-controlled, internally consistent biogeochemical data product. The data product includes 870 stations of dissolved inorganic nutrients, including temperature and salinity, sampled during 24 cruises. The goal of this work is to lay the foundations to develop algorithms and techniques that minimize the data gathering latency and at the same time balance the energy consumption among the nodes, so as to maximize the network lifetime. Following an incremental-complexity approach, several mathematical programming problems are proposed with focus on different network performance metrics. First, the static routing problem is formulated for large and dense WSNs. Optimal data-gathering trees are analyzed and the effects of several sensor capabilities and constraints are discussed, e.g., radio power constraints, energy consumption model, and data aggregation functionalities. Then, dynamic re-routing and scheduling are considered. An accurate network model is proposed that captures the tradeoff between the data gathering latency and the energy consumption, by modeling the interactions among the routing, medium access control and physical layers. For each problem, extensive simulation results are provided. The proposed models provide a deeper insight into the problem of timely and energy efficient data gathering. Useful guidelines for the design of efficient WSNs are derived and discussed. 14. How important are diapycnal mixing and geothermal heating for the deep circulation of the Western Mediterranean?

Abstract

The dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy ε and the associated diapycnal turbulent mixing is inferred from a set of microstructure observations collected over several cruises from year 2012 to 2014. The geographical distribution of ε highlights several regions of enhanced levels of turbulence ranging from 10−9 to 10−6 W kg−1: the Sicily Channel, the Corsica Channel, and the Ligurian Sea. Elsewhere, ε was small, often below 10−10 W kg−1. Below 1300 m, geothermal heating provides three-fold more buoyancy than small-scale turbulence. Geothermal heating and turbulent diffusion provide enough buoyancy to balance 15% to 50% of a mean yearly deep water formation rate of 0.9 to 0.3 sverdrup (106 m3/s), respectively. The remaining part has to eventually overflow through the Strait of Gibraltar.

15. Rapid response to climate change in a marginal sea

Abstract

The Mediterranean Sea is a mid-latitude marginal sea, particularly responsive to climate change as reported by recent studies. The Sicily Channel is a choke point separating the sea in two main basins, the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and the Western Mediterranean Sea. Here, we report and analyse a long-term record (1993–2016) of the thermohaline properties of the Intermediate Water that crosses the Sicily Channel, showing increasing temperature and salinity trends much stronger than those observed at intermediate depths in the global ocean. We investigate the causes of the observed trends and in particular determine the role of a changing climate over the Eastern Mediterranean, where the Intermediate Water is formed. The long-term Sicily record reveals how fast the response to climate change can be in a marginal sea like the Mediterranean Sea compared to the global ocean, and demonstrates the essential role of long time series in the ocean.

Abstract

Il presente capitolo si pone l’obiettivo di descrivere le principali novità introdotte in seguito all’adozione della Direttiva 34/2013/UE, che ha determinato la pubblicazione del D.lgs. 18 agosto 2015, n. 139 (G.U. del 4 settembre 2015). Come noto, tale decreto ha aggiornato la disciplina civilistica riguardo ai bilanci di esercizio e la normativa prevista dal D.lgs. 127/1991 in merito al bilancio consolidato. Il recepimento della nuova direttiva contabile ad opera del Ministero dell’Economia e delle Finanze (MEF) si è sviluppato in due differenti step: il primo ha previsto (giugno 2014) la pubblica consultazione di un documento che ha analizzato tematiche di carattere generale, privilegiando gli aspetti legati ad una possibile semplificazione degli oneri amministrativi delle aziende e all’introduzione di alcune modifiche all’ordinamento contabile nazionale in un’ottica di modernizzazione, il secondo invece ha determinato la realizzazione di uno schema di articolato che ha recepito i commenti delle organizzazioni che hanno partecipato alla pubblica consultazione e del rapporto di collaborazione richiesto all’Organismo Italiano di Contabilità. Per quanto concerne l’entrata in vigore delle nuove disposizioni il riferimento è all’art. 12 del D.lgs. 139/2015 che ne prevede l’applicazione ai bilanci degli esercizi finanziari a partire dalla data di entrata in vigore del decreto, ovvero dal 1 gennaio 2016, che si traduce nella normalità dei casi nei bilanci chiusi al 31 dicembre 2016.

17. Jet measures and hadronic event shapes at the CERN {Mathematical expression}p collider

Abstract

We analyze the energy density distribution in harronic final states as a function of their total transverse energy measured in the segmented central calorimeter of the UA2 detector. The energy dependence of collective shape variables is investigated. The data, collected at the CERN {Mathematical expression}p Collider at {Mathematical expression} GeV, exhibit strong variations in all these variables over the transverse energy range between 15 and 210 GeV, corresponding to substantial modifications in the structure of multihadronic final states. The evolution of the energy density distribution and of the collective shape variables shows a clear transition between two extreme dynamical regimes, respectively dominated by pT-limited phase space and by collimated two-jet configurations. A study of the relative populations of two-and three-jet systems reveals two different sources of configurations having three distinct lobes in the pattern of the energy-flow. A first component, steeply falling with energy, receives substantial contributions from soft parton collisions at lower transverse energies. Above 60 GeV a new hard component emerges, characterized by an approximately constant rate with respect to the dominant two-jet structures. © 1987 Springer-Verlag.

The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 142 nb-1 at {Mathematical expression}=546 GeV, and of 310 nb-1 at {Mathematical expression}=630 GeV. Abstract

From an integrated luminosity of ∫Ldt = 116 nb-1, 10events are found which contain an electron pair of mass in the range 12 < Mee < 26 GeV c2 and electron transverse momenta pTe > 5 GeV c. THe sample are described, as well as some featruyres of the The production characteristics of this sample are described, as well as some features of the estimated to be 2.2±0.6 events. Abstract

A heuristic model is used to describe data collected by the UA2 experiment at √s = 630 GeV. Distributions of the energy sharing between the leading clusters and the rest of the event are examined. The main features of these distributions can be described by a two-component model with soft, collective interactions dominating at low transverse energy and hard, constituent interactions dominating at high transverse energy. This model provides a simple picture of the emergence of two-jet dominance at SPS pp Collider energies. © 1985.

Abstract

The UA2 experiment, running at the CERN SPS {Mathematical expression} Collider, has performed a study of events containing three hard jets in the final state. The angular distributions of the three jets show evidence for gluon bremsstrahlung, in good agreement with a QCD model to leading order in the strong coupling constant αs. The yield of three-jet events relative to that of two-jet events provides a measure of the strong coupling constant: ;3K3/K2=0.23±0.01±0.04, where K2 and K3 represent the contributions arising from higher order corrections in α3 to the two- and three-jet exclusive cross-sections. A detailed discussion of the systematic and theoretical uncertainties is given. © 1986 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

One century of oceanographic measurements has evidenced gradual increases in temperature and salinity of western Mediterranean water masses, even though the vertical stratification has basically remained unchanged. Starting in 2005, the basic structure of the intermediate and deep layers abruptly changed. We report here evidence of reinforced thermohaline variability in the deep western basin with significant dense water formation events producing large amounts of warmer, saltier and denser water masses than ever before. We provide a detailed chronological order to these changes, giving an overview of the new water masses and following their route from the central basin interior to the east (toward the Tyrrhenian) and toward the Atlantic Ocean. As a consequence of this climate shift, new deep waters outflowing through Gibraltar will impact the North Atlantic in terms of salt and heat input. In addition, modifications in the Mediterranean abyssal ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles are to be expected.

Abstract

Heterotrophic and luminous bacteria, leucine aminopeptidase and alkaline phosphatase and the main hydrological parameters were measured in the Western Mediterranean Sea, to improve knowledge on the microbial distribution and role at epi-, meso- and bathy-pelagic layers. Hot spots of abundance and activity were found also at meso- and bathy-pelagic layers, probably related to water circulation dynamics.

Abstract

Within the complex of deep, hypersaline anoxic lakes (DHALs) of the Mediterranean Ridge, we identified a new, unexplored DHAL and named it ‘Lake Kryos’ after a nearby depression. This lake is filled with magnesium chloride (MgCl2)‐rich, athalassohaline brine (salinity > 470 practical salinity units), presumably formed by the dissolution of Messinian bischofite. Compared with the DHAL Discovery, it contains elevated concentrations of kosmotropic sodium and sulfate ions, which are capable of reducing the net chaotropicily of MgCl2‐rich solutions. The brine of Lake Kryos may therefore be biologically permissive at MgCl2 concentrations previously considered incompatible with life. We characterized the microbiology of the seawater–Kryos brine interface and managed to recover mRNA from the 2.27–3.03 M MgCl2 layer (equivalent to 0.747–0.631 water activity), thereby expanding the established chaotropicity window‐for‐life. The primary bacterial taxa present there were Kebrit Deep Bacteria 1 candidate division and DHAL‐specific group of organisms, distantly related to Desulfohalobium. Two euryarchaeal candidate divisions, Mediterranean Sea Brine Lakes group 1 and halophilic cluster 1, accounted for > 85% of the rRNA‐containing archaeal clones derived from the 2.27–3.03 M MgCl2 layer, but were minority community‐members in the overlying interface‐layers. Abstract

The COMMON SENSE (CS) project aims to develop cost-effective, multi-functional innovative sensors to perform reliable in-situ measurements in the marine environment. The COMMON SENSE sensors will focus on key parameters including eutrophication, heavy metals, marine litter (microplastics) and underwater noise. The project will focus on increasing the availability of sensor data and observations through the development and implementation of the Common Sensor Web Platform (CSWP), a software platform that will integrate the COMMON SENSE sensor data and observations and deliver them to the Web, in standard formats and through standard interfaces.
