Abstract

Digital twins are an important technology for advancing mobile communications, specially in use cases that require simultaneously simulating the wireless channel, 3D scenes and machine learning. Aiming at providing a solution to this demand, this work describes a modular co-simulation methodology called CAVIAR. Here, CAVIAR is upgraded to support a message passing library and enable the virtual counterpart of a digital twin system using different 6G-related simulators. The main contributions of this work are the detailed description of different CAVIAR architectures, the implementation of this methodology to assess a 6G use case of UAV-based search and rescue mission (SAR), and the generation of benchmarking data about the computational resource usage. For executing the SAR co-simulation we adopt five open-source solutions: the physical and link level network simulator Sionna, the simulator for autonomous vehicles AirSim, scikit-learn for training a decision tree for MIMO beam selection, Yolov8 for the detection of rescue targets and NATS for message passing. Results for the implemented SAR use case suggest that the methodology can run in a single machine, with the main demanded resources being the CPU processing and the GPU memory.

Abstract

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and communication systems are fundamental elements in Mission Critical services, such as search and rescue. In this article, we introduce an architecture for managing and orchestrating 5G and beyond networks that operate over a heterogeneous infrastructure with UAVs' aid. UAVs are used for collecting and processing data, as well as improving communications. The proposed System Intelligence (SI) architecture was designed to comply with recent standardization works, especially the ETSI Experiential Networked Intelligence specifications. Another contribution of this article is an evaluation using a testbed based on a virtualized non-standalone 5G core and a 4G Radio Access Network (RAN) implemented with open-source software. The experimental results indicate, for instance, that SI can substantially improve the latency of UAV-based services by splitting deep neural networks between UAV and edge or cloud equipment. Other experiments explore the slicing of RAN resources and efficient placement of virtual network functions to assess the benefits of incorporating intelligence in UAV-based mission-critical services., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

ObjectivesPositive pressure ventilation exposes the lung to mechanical stresses that can exacerbate injury. The exact mechanism of this pathologic process remains elusive. The goal of this study was to describe recruitment/derecruitment at acinar length scales over short-time frames and test the hypothesis that mechanical interdependence between neighboring lung units determines the spatial and temporal distributions of recruitment/derecruitment, using a computational model.DesignExperimental animal study.SettingInternational synchrotron radiation laboratory.SubjectsFour anesthetized rabbits, ventilated in pressure controlled mode.InterventionsThe lung was consecutively imaged at ~ 1.5-minute intervals using phase-contrast synchrotron imaging, at positive end-expiratory pressures of 12, 9, 6, 3, and 0 cm H2O before and after lavage and mechanical ventilation induced injury. The extent and spatial distribution of recruitment/derecruitment was analyzed by subtracting subsequent images. In a realistic lung structure, we implemented a mechanistic model in which each unit has individual pressures and speeds of opening and closing. Derecruited and recruited lung fractions (Fderecruited, Frecruited) were computed based on the comparison of the aerated volumes at successive time points.Measurements and main resultsAlternative recruitment/derecruitment occurred in neighboring alveoli over short-time scales in all tested positive end-expiratory pressure levels and despite stable pressure controlled mode. The computational model reproduced this behavior only when parenchymal interdependence between neighboring acini was accounted for. Simulations closely mimicked the experimental magnitude of Fderecruited and Frecruited when mechanical interdependence was included, while its exclusion gave Frecruited values of zero at positive end-expiratory pressure greater than or equal to 3 cm H2O.ConclusionsThese findings give further insight into the microscopic behavior of the injured lung and provide a means of testing protective-ventilation strategies to prevent recruitment/derecruitment and subsequent lung damage.

The article discusses research which evaluated real-time physiological effects of clamping the endotracheal tube (ETT) during mechanical ventilator disconnection on regional lung volumes and ventilation distribution. The study recorded pulmonary electric impedance tomography measurements of regional lung volumes and ventilation distribution with and without clamping. It analyzed intrapulmonary shunts using simultaneous arterial and central venous gas sampling.

A likelihood method for the Cherenkov angle reconstruction was applied leading to a velocity determination for protons with a resolution around 0.1%. The electric charge reconstruction is based on the counting of the number of photoelectrons and on an overall efficiency estimation on an event-by-event basis. Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), to be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2008, is a cosmic ray detector with several subsystems, one of which is a proximity focusing Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector. This detector will be equipped with a dual radiator (aerogel+NaF), a lateral conical mirror and a detection plane made of 680 photomultipliers and light guides, enabling precise measurements of particle electric charge and velocity. Combining velocity measurements with data on particle rigidity from the AMS Tracker it is possible to obtain a measurement for particle mass, allowing the separation of isotopes. A Monte Carlo simulation of the RICH detector, based on realistic properties measured at ion beam tests, was performed to evaluate isotope separation capabilities. Abstract

Digital twins and virtual reality are pivotal technologies in the context of Industry 4.0, facilitating the design, simulation, optimization, and remote interaction with production systems. These technologies also present new prospects for developing immersive and hyper-realistic digital factories within the metaverse. This paper aims to enhance collaboration and communication in a 3D virtual world, focusing on shared reality and the metaverse's integration in digital factories. Our main contribution enables users to have full-body immersive interaction with virtual 3D assets and realistic locomotion in a 3D environment, fostering flexibility in collaboration and environment monitoring/control. To achieve this, we propose a systematic methodology for designing and implementing a digital twin-based factory with an IoT infrastructure. By replicating sensors and actuators in digital twins, real-time asset management synchronized with the physical factory is realized, empowering full-body interaction. To enable full-body interaction with virtual equipment, we employ a human motion tracking system. A proof-of-concept case study, developed using Unity3D game engine, Solace PubSub+ event streaming APIs, and Awinda Xsens wearable inertial sensors as the motion tracking system, validates our proposed methodology. The results of the case study demonstrate the successful integration of digital twins, virtual reality, and the metaverse, enabling real-time monitoring and control, full-body interaction, and immersive user experiences in the virtual environment. Abstract

Software-Defined Radios are radio communications devices that have been growing and developing on a larger scale in recent years. Communications are intrinsically embedded in our day by day, thus presenting a higher motivation to use software-defined radios due to its attractive cost. However they present technical limitations. This paper addresses this problem, which is the non-linearity behaviour of gain and frequency in the LimeSDR-USB. That is, this equipment is used to produce a FM signal with an associated frequency and gain before being parameterised according to the internal parameters of each software-defined radio. Each software-defined radio presents a value of frequency and gain of its own, which correlates to the generated signals at the output level. To avoid this, machine learning networks were used, in which networks were trained to adapt to the non-linearity of these devices and correct it without the user noticing. This way, the user sets a desired frequency and gain in a signal, at the output of the software-defined radios, and a neural network calculates which values the software-defined radios should be parameterised, thus mitigating the non-linearity behaviour. This paper presents the evaluation of a laboratory prototype based on low-cost commercial software-defined radios equipment, to replace an expensive metrologically calibrated equipment used for radio frequency tests on a new concept of industrial test station, with description of the integration of Digital Twins, with their physical and virtual parts. Abstract

In the automotive industry, products must be tested and verified before being launched; currently, products such as automotive radio are usually tested with expensive metrology equipment, such as the Rohde & Schwarz SFE100, which produces radio frequency signals. This study assessed the feasibility of replacing the SFE100 with two inexpensive devices, Adalm-Pluto and LimeSDR usb, which are software-defined radios. For this evaluation, a study was carried out to determine specific metrological characteristics and then to compare with those of metrological equipment. Based on the results and tests of the study, we conclude that SDRs can generate test signals (FM, DAB, DVB, ISDB and SXM) with uncertainties of 0.5dBm and a spectral density ratio comparable to SFE100, thereby enabling their replacement. Furthermore, the evaluation datasets of all equipment have been publicly available [1] , enabling the scientific community to extract the metrological uncertainties for all signal carriers generated by the device.
