Aquatic mammals occur throughout the Brazil territory. However, until now there are no descriptions of the species that occur in the coast of Pernambuco State. Stranding assistance is an important tool for the record of aquatic mammal species and for obtaining information about populations and their respective threats. This study aimed to describe the occurrence, diversity and distribution of aquatic mammals in Pernambuco State, Brazil. The knowledge acquired came from the database from institutions within the Northeast Marine Mammals Stranding Network (REMANE) that acted in the state between 1984 and 2015, contemplating live and dead animals. A number of 157 stranding events were recorded in Pernambuco State, corresponding to 18 aquatic mammal species. Sotalia guianensis was the most abundant species (28,7%), followed by Tursiops truncatus (17,2%) and Trichechus manatus (9,6%). The presence of threatened and migratory species was identified, being the anthropic activities the biggest threat. Recife counties and the Olinda County presented itself as discontinued area of the marine manatee; however, this study showed the occurrence of native animals in these localities. Systematized assistance to stranding and educational campaigns are essentials to guarantee the conservations of these species in Pernambuco. Os mamíferos aquáticos utilizam como habitat todo o território brasileiro; entretanto, até o presente momento não se tinha uma descrição sistematizada das espécies que ocorrem no litoral do estado de Pernambuco. O atendimento aos encalhes é uma importante ferramenta para obtenção desses registros, assim como para gerar informações sobre as populações e respectivas ameaças às quais estão sujeitas. Este trabalho teve como objetivo descrever a ocorrência, diversidade e distribuição de mamíferos aquáticos no estado de Pernambuco, Brasil. O conhecimento adquirido foi oriundo do banco de dados das instituições da Rede de Encalhes de Mamíferos Aquáticos do Nordeste, que atuaram no estado entre 1984 e 2015, contemplando animais vivos e mortos. Foram registrados 157 eventos de encalhes em Pernambuco, correspondendo a 18 espécies de mamíferos aquáticos. Sotalia guianensis foi a espécie mais abundante (28,7%), seguida por Tursiops truncatus (17,2%) e Trichechus manatus (9,6%). Foi identificada a presença de espécies ameaçadas e migratórias, sendo as atividades antrópicas a maior ameaça. Os municípios de Recife e Olinda apresentavam-se como área de descontinuidade de ocorrência do peixe-boi- marinho; entretanto, este estudo identificou animais nativos nessas localidades. O atendimento sistematizado aos encalhes e as campanhas educativas são essenciais para garantir a conservação dessas espécies no estado.

In Brazil, several species of aquatic mammals have been suffering almost constantly form the anthropogenic, and sometimes triggering, effects of different parasitic agents. However, our scientific knowledge of the parasitic fauna of aquatic mammals remains limited. Thus, the aim of the present study was to diagnose infections caused by Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia sp. and endoparasites among aquatic mammals in Brazil. To do this, 553 samples were collected from fecal content and the gastrointestinal tract of several species of cetaceans, sirenians (Antillean and Amazonian manatees) and mustelids (neotropical and giant otters) in the North (Amapá, Amazonas, Pará and Rondônia) and Northeast (Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Sergipe, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte) of Brazil. Samples were obtained from animals that were kept in captivity and others in the wild, including specimens that lived in rivers, coastlines and oceans. For Cryptosporidium spp., the fecal samples were processed by Kinyoun technique. Concerning the identification of Giardia sp. cysts and helminth eggs, the material collected was submitted to flotation (Willis and Faust) and sedimentation (Hoffman) methods, followed by the Flotac technique. All samples were subjected to the direct immunofluorescence test. In the results obtained, a notable infection was caused by the digenetic trematode of the Opistothrematidae family (Pulmonicola cochleotrema), with an infection prevalence of approximately 7.95% (07/88) among Antillean manatees. The presence of Cryptosporidium spp. was confirmed in five species: Lontra longicaudis (15.28%); Pteronura brasiliensis (41.66%); Sotalia guianensis (9.67%); Trichechus inunguis (16.03%) and Trichechus manatus (13.79%). Giardia sp. was diagnosed in the following species: L. longicaudis (9.23%); P. brasiliensis (29.16%); Kogia breviceps (100%); Kogia sima (25%); S. guianensis (9.67%); T. inunguis (3.81%) and T. manatus (10.34%). The identification of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia sp. in aquatic mammals, allied to the capacity of their oocysts and cysts, respectively, to remain infective in the environment for a long period of time, increases the possibility of the transmission of these agents to other aquatic and land organisms, as well as the human population. Dentro deste contexto, encontram-se várias espécies de mamíferos aquáticos, as quais vem sofrendo constantemente com os efeitos antropogênicos e por vezes desencadeantes de diversos agentes parasitários. Entretanto, o conhecimento científico da fauna parasitária dos mamíferos aquáticos ainda é bastante limitado. Desta forma, este trabalho teve por objetivo diagnosticar infecções ocasionadas por Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia sp. e endoparasitos em mamíferos aquáticos no Brasil. Para isto foram realizadas coletas de 553 amostras de conteúdo fecal e do trato gastrointestinal de diversas espécies de cetáceos, sirênios (peixe-boi marinho e amazônico) e mustelídeos (lontra neotropical e ariranha), nas regiões Norte (Amapá, Amazonas, Pará e Rondônia) e Nordeste (Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Sergipe, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte). Entre os animais envolvidos foi possível obter amostras de espécimes mantidos em cativeiro e de vida livre, bem como, de espécies que habitavam os recursos fluviais, costeiros e oceânicos. Para a pesquisa de Cryptosporidium spp. as amostras fecais foram processadas pela técnica de Kinyoun. Ao que concerne à identificação dos cistos de Giardia sp. e ovos de helmintos, o material coletado foi submetido aos métodos de flutuação (Willis e Faust) e sedimentação (Hoffman), assim como à técnica do Flotac. Todas as amostras foram submetidas ao Teste de Imunofluorescência Direta. Entre os resultados obtidos destaca-se a infecção ocasionada pelo trematódeo digenético da família Opistothrematidae, espécie Pulmonicola cochleotrema, sendo a frequência da infecção de aproximadamente 7,95% (07/88) em peixes-bois marinhos. A presença de Cryptosporidium spp. foi constatada em cinco espécies, sendo estas, a Lontra longicaudis (15,28%), Pteronura brasiliensis (41,66%), Sotalia guianensis (9,67%), Trichechus inunguis (16,03%) e Trichechus manatus (13,79%). No que concerne à ocorrência de Giardia sp., este coccídio foi diagnosticado em um maior número de espécies, conforme pode ser constatado em L. longicaudis (9,23%), P. brasiliensis (29,16%), Kogia breviceps (100%), Kogia sima (25%), S. guianensis (9,67%), T. inunguis (3,81%) e T. manatus (10,34%). A identificação de Cryptosporidium spp. e Giardia sp. acometendo os mamíferos aquáticos, aliado à capacidade dos oocistos e cistos respectivamente destes protozoários permanecerem infectantes em condições ambientais por um longo período de tempo, amplia a possibilidade de transmissão destes agentes para outros organismos aquáticos, terrestres e populações humanas.

Fecal samples were collected from 34 Antillean manatees, 12 Amazonian manatees and also 21 employees involved in the management activities. Water samples, used to the manatees consumption and management were also collected. The fecal samples were processed by sedimentation in formol-ether and Kinyoun technique. Before the water samples were processed, this was submitted to a filtration process in membrane (diameter of 47 mm, porosity of 3 μm) under negative pressure. At the end of the analyzing operations, the positive samples were submitted to the Direct Immunoflorescence Test. The results obtained by light and fluorescence microscopy analysis showed alcohol-acid-resistant structures compatible with oocyst of Cryptosporidium spp. in 25% (34/136) and 4,30% (05/115) of thematerial proceeding from Antillean manatees and Amazonian manatees, respectively; 23,80% (10/42) of the material obtained from the employees; and 66,67% (04/06) of the water samples analyzed. The results showed the possibility of Antillean manatees and Amazonian manatees could become infected with Cryptosporidium spp., and participate in the epidemiology of this waterborne disease by eliminate of viable oocyst in water environment wich can infect man and a wide range of domestic and wild animals. The hand of the frequency of Cryptosporidium spp. in staff involved directly in captive animal care and management could be the way to prevent the infections the manatee’s species. O objetivo neste trabalho foi verificar a ocorrência de oocistos de Cryptosporidium spp. em peixes-boi marinhos (Trichechus manatus) e peixes-boi amazônicos (Trichechus inunguis) no Brasil, além de avaliar a transmissão hídrica deste coccídio e a sua influência com os funcionários diretamente envolvidos no manejo dos animais mantidos em cativeiro. Para tanto foram coletadas amostras fecais provenientes de 34 peixes-boi marinhos, 12 peixes-boi amazônicos e 21 funcionários envolvidos em atividades de manejo, bem como amostras de água superficial destinada a manutenção e consumo dos animais. As amostras fecais foram processadas através da sedimentação pelo formoléter e coradas pela técnica de Kinyoun. No que concerne as amostras de água, estas foram submetidas ao processo de filtração em membranas (47 mm de diâmetro e 3 μm de porosidade) sob pressão negativa. No final das análises, as amostras positivas foram submetidas ao Teste de Imunofluorescência Direta. Os resultados obtidos namicroscopia de luz e fluorescência revelaram oocistos de Cryptosporidium spp. em 25% (34/136) e 4,30% (05/115), sendo inerentes respectivamente aos peixes-boi marinhos e amazônicos, 23,80% (10/42) do material proveniente dos funcionários e 66,67% (04/06) das análises de água. Os resultados finais apontam a possibilidade dos peixes-boi marinhos e peixes-boi amazônicos infectarem-se com Cryptosporidium spp., e participar da epidemiologia das doenças veiculadas pela água, através da eliminação de oocistos viáveis ao ambiente que podem infectar o homem e um grande número de animais domésticos e silvestres. O controle da freqüência de infecções de Cryptosporidium spp. nos funcionários diretamente envolvidos no manejo e cuidados dos animais mantidos em cativeiro pode ser um dos caminhos para prevenir a infecção nas espécies de peixes-boi.

Occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in the maintenance water of Antillean manatees (Trichechus manatus) in captivity. The goal of this research was to verify the occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in the water consumption and supply of pools used by Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus) in captivity. Six samples were collected from the pool's supply system (at the beach), water used for manatee consumption, mineral water used in the preparation of artificial milk formulas offered to orphan manatee calves, also used in permanent maintenance pools in the visitation area, and water utilized in the rehabilitation area, where calves of all ages were kept. Before the water samples were processed, each sample was submitted to a filtration process. The diagnosis of the parasite was obtained by Kinyoun technique and the positive samples were submitted to the Direct Immunoflorescence Test. The results showed the presence of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in 66.67% (4/6) of the samples from the water supply system and pool, with eight to 56 oocysts per liter. There was evidence that the water used in the maintenance of the Antillean manatees could be an important medium for hydric transmission of Cryptosporidium spp. and that it may be a predisposing factor to the occurrence of cryptosporidiosis in Antillean manatees in captivity. A finalidade da pesquisa foi verificar a ocorrência de oocistos de Cryptosporidium spp. na água de consumo e abastecimento das piscinas destinadas aos peixes-boi marinhos (Trichechus manatus) em cativeiro. Para tanto, foram coletadas seis amostras de água, provenientes do ponto de abastecimento das piscinas (praia), água destinada ao consumo dos animais, água mineral utilizada na formulação da dieta láctea ofertada aos filhotes órfãos e das piscinas destinadas a manutenção permanente, reabilitação com filhotes de idade superior a dois anos e reabilitação com filhotes de idade inferior a dois anos. Antes das amostras serem processadas, estas foram submetidas ao processo de filtração. Posteriormente o diagnóstico do parasito foi realizado pela técnica de Kinyoun e as amostras positivas foram submetidas ao Teste de Imunofluorescência Direta. Os resultados revelaram a presença de oocistos de Cryptosporidium spp. em 66,67% (4/6) das amostras, correspondendo à água proveniente do ponto de abastecimento dos recintos e das piscinas, sendo encontrados de oito a 56 oocistos/litro. Os resultados evidenciaram que a água destinada à manutenção dos peixes-boi marinhos pode ser um meio importante na transmissão hídrica de Cryptosporidium spp. predispondo a ocorrência da criptosporidioseem peixes-boi marinhos em cativeiro.

Ocurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. in Amazonian manatees (Trichechus inunguis, Natterer, 1883). The apicomplexa protozoa Cryptosporidium infects several mammals, including terrestrial and aquatic species. In the epidemiology of this infection, the ingestion of water and/or food contamined with oocysts comprises the main mechanism of transmission to susceptible animals. Among the Sirenians, the occurrence of this coccidium has been reported in dugongs (Dugong dugon) and Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus). The present study was conducted with the aim of verifying the occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. in Amazonian manatee. For this purpose, fecal samples were collected from ten free-ranging Amazonian manatees, two specimens in captivity, and 103 supernatants fecal samples. The samples were processed by the sedimentation method in formol-ether and Kinyoun stain technique for the presence of Cryptosporidium spp.. The positive samples were then submitted to Direct Immunoflorescence Test. The results showed 4.34% (05/115) of positive samples. This is the first report of Cryptosporidium spp. in the Amazonian manatee. O protozoário apicomplexa Cryptosporidium infecta vários mamíferos, incluindo espécies terrestres e aquáticas. Na epidemiologia desta parasitose, a ingestão de água e/ou de alimentos contaminados com oocistos consiste no principal mecanismo de transmissão para animais susceptíveis. Entre os Sirênios, a ocorrência de Cryptosporidium spp. foi relatada em dugongos (Dugong dugon) e peixes-boi marinhos (Trichechus manatus manatus). O presente trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a ocorrência de Cryptosporidium spp. em peixes-boi amazônicos. Para isso, foram coletadas amostras fecais provenientes de dez peixes-boi amazônicos nativos, dois espécimes mantidos em cativeiro e 103 amostras fecais sobrenadantes. As amostras foram processadas pelo método de sedimentação em formol-éter e corados pela técnica de Kinyoun para determinar a presença de oocistos de Cryptosporidium spp. Após as análises, as amostras positivas foram submetidas à confirmação pelo Teste de Imunofluorescência Direta. Os resultados mostraram que 4.34% (5/115) das amostras foram positivas. Este é o primeiro relato de Cryptosporidium spp. em peixes-boi amazônicos.

Erysipelas is a zoonotic disease caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. In cetaceans, this disease has two main clinical forms: a cutaneous one, grossly characterized by rhomboid lesions, and a septicemic and often fatal form. Erysipelas is considered an important cause of morbidity and mortality in captive cetaceans; however, information in free-ranging cetaceans is limited. An adult common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was found dead and in advanced autolysis in Paraíba state, northeastern Brazil, on July 19th, 2020. Upon gross examination, 80% of the body surface presented disseminated rhomboid cutaneous lesions ranging from 4 to 6 cm-width, characterized by well-defined edges and occasional ulceration, consistent with erysipelas. Additionally, anthropic-made postmortem linear cuts and partial mechanical removal of the flank musculature were noted. Skin samples were collected for histopathologic and molecular analyses. Microscopically, it was possible to observe multifocal dermatitis with vasculitis. Erysipelothrix sp. was detected by PCR. Despite previous reports of human consumption of cetacean meat in northeastern Brazil, the observed marks and advanced carcass autolysis suggested that the animal was most likely used as bait for fishing instead of human intake. This case highlights the value of postmortem examination and PCR even in poorly preserved cadavers and contributes to the understanding of the epidemiology of cutaneous erysipelas in free-ranging cetaceans (first report in an odontocete from the Southern Hemisphere). Due to the zoonotic potential of certain Erysipelothrix species (i.e., E. rhusiopathiae), active public health policies are required to inform field professionals and the general public about the health threats associated with marine mammal manipulation and consumption.

O peixe-boi-marinho (Trichechus manatus) é um mamífero aquático herbívoro, ameaçado de extinção, que possui hábitos costeiros e se distribui desde o sudeste dos Estados Unidos até o litoral nordeste do Brasil. Embora a avaliação dos seus hábitos alimentares esteja consolidada, há escassez de dados disponíveis sobre a composição nutricional dos alimentos ingeridos em vida livre. Tendo em vista este fato, o presente trabalho objetivou analisar a composição nutricional da dieta de peixe-boi-marinho, in situ, em unidades de conservação do litoral da Paraíba. Foram coletados 31 itens alimentares e 20 amostras fecais de peixe-boi-marinho na Área de Proteção Ambiental da Barra do Rio Mamanguape e na Área de Relevante Interesse Ecológico Manguezais da Foz do Rio Mamanguape, durante dois períodos do ano (chuvoso e seco). Os itens alimentares foram submetidos à determinação de matéria seca, fibra em detergente neutro, fibra em detergente ácido, proteína bruta e matéria mineral. As amostras de fezes foram submetidas à identificação qualitativa de grupo taxonômico e resíduos sólidos. A composição nutricional dos itens alimentares foi semelhante à literatura consultada, exceto matéria seca e matéria mineral. Nas amostras fecais, foram verificadas espécies de alga (n=4), angiosperma marinha (n=1), fragmentos de sacola plástica (n=6), fio de nylon (n=1), cabo de nylon (n=1), barbante plástico (n=1) e estruturas de plantas não identificadas. Este trabalho pode subsidiar estudos futuros sobre as exigências nutricionais de peixes-boi marinhos no Brasil e auxiliar na elaboração de dietas básicas de manutenção para animais cativos e planos de manejo. The manatee (Trichechus manatus) is an endangered herbivorous aquatic mammal, which has coastal habits and is distributed from the southeastern United States to the northeastern coast of Brazil. Although the evaluation of their eating habits is consolidated, there are data available on the nutritional composition of foods consumed in wildlife. Considering this fact, the present study aimed at the nutritional composition of the antillene manatee diet, in situ, in conservation units of the Paraíba coast. A total of 31 food items and 20 faecal samples of manatee were collected from the Environmental Protection Area of the Barra of the River Mamanguape and Area of Relevant Ecological Interest Mangrooves of Foz of the River Mamanguape, during two periods of the year (rainy and dry). The food components were submitted to determination of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, crude protein and mineral matter. As fecal samples were submitted to the qualitative identification of taxonomic group and solid residues. Samples of algae (n = 4), marine angiosperm (n = 1), fragments of plastic bag (n = 6), nylon thread (n = 1), nylon rope, plastic twine (n = 1) and unidentified plant structures. A nutritional composition of food items for scientific literature, except dry matter and mineral matter.
