Abstract

A supposedly nonmagnetic 5d$^1$ double perosvkite oxide is investigated by a combination of spectroscopic and theoretical methods, namely resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic circular dichroism, and multiplet ligand field calculations. We found that the large spin-orbit coupling admixes the 5d $t_{2g}$ and $e_g$ orbitals, covalency raises the 5d population well above the nominal value, and the local symmetry is lower than $O_h$. The obtained electronic interactions account for the finite magnetic moment of Os in this compound and, in general, of 5d$^1$ ions. Our results provide direct evidence of elusive Jahn-Teller distortions, hinting at a strong electron-lattice coupling.

Abstract

The longstanding problem of interpretation of satellite structures in core level photoemission spectra of metallic systems with a low density of conduction electrons is addressed using the specific example of Sb-doped SnO$_2$. Comparison of {\it ab initio} many-body calculations with experimental hard X-ray photoemission spectra of the Sn 4$d$ states shows that strong satellites are produced by coupling of the Sn core hole to the plasma oscillations of the free electrons introduced by doping. Within the same theoretical framework, spectral changes of the valence band spectra are also related to dynamical screening effects. These results demonstrate that, for the interpretation of electron correlation features in the core level photoelectron spectra of such narrow-band materials, going beyond the homogeneous electron gas electron-plasmon coupling model is essential., Comment: 6 PAGES, 4 FIGURES

Abstract

The electronic anisotropy in MgB2, is still a not completely clear topic; high quality c-oriented films are suitable systems to investigate this property. In this work we present our results on MgB2 superconducting thin films grown on MgO and sapphire substrates. The films are deposited in high vacuum, at room temperature, by Laser Ablation, starting from two different targets: pure Boron and stoichiometric MgB2. In both cases, to obtain and crystallize the superconducting phase, an ex-situ annealing in magnesium vapor is needed. The films were characterized by Synchrotron radiation diffraction measurements; the films turned out to be strongly c-oriented, with the c-axis perpendicular to the film surface and an influence of the substrate on crystallographic parameters is observed. Resisivity measurements with the magnetic field perpendicular and parallel directions to the film surface evidenced an anisotropic upper critical field behavior. Abstract

MgB2 thin films were deposited using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) and ex-situ annealing in Mg atmosphere. The films presented critical temperatures up to 36K and turned out to be preferentially c-oriented both on Al2O3 (r-cut) and MgO(100) substrates. Synchrotron analyses gave also some indications of in plane texturing. The films exhibit very fine grain size (1200angstromin the basal plane and 100angstrom along c-axis) but the general resistivity behavior and the remarkable extension of the irreversible region confirm that the grains boundaries are not barriers for supercurrents. Upper critical field measurements with the magnetic field perpendicular and parallel with respect to the film surface evidenced a field anisotropy ratio of 1.8. The Hc2 values are considerably higher with respect to the bulk ones, namely when the field lies in the basal plane, and the field-temperature phase diagram for the two magnetic field orientations suggest the possibility of strongly enhancing the pinning region by means of texturing., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

In the rapidly growing field of spintronics, simultaneous control of electronic and magnetic properties is essential, and the perspective of building novel phases is directly linked to the control of tuning parameters, for example, thickness and doping. Looking at the relevant effects in interface-driven spintronics, the reduced symmetry at a surface and interface corresponds to a severe modification of the overlap of electron orbitals, that is, to a change of electron hybridization. Here we report a chemically and magnetically sensitive depth-dependent analysis of two paradigmatic systems, namely La1-xSrxMnO3 and (Ga,Mn)As. Supported by cluster calculations, we find a crossover between surface and bulk in the electron hybridization/correlation and we identify a spectroscopic fingerprint of bulk metallic character and ferromagnetism versus depth. The critical thickness and the gradient of hybridization are measured, setting an intrinsic limit of 3 and 10 unit cells from the surface, respectively, for (Ga,Mn)As and La1-xSrxMnO3, for fully restoring bulk properties.

Abstract

Physical review materials 5(10), 104403 (2021). doi:10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.5.104403, Hybridization of electronic states and orbital symmetry in transition metal oxides are generally considered key ingredients in the description of both their electronic and magnetic properties. In the prototypical case of La$_{0.65}$Sr$_{0.35}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO), a landmark system for spintronics applications, a description based solely on Mn 3d and O 2p electronic states is reductive. We thus analyzed elemental and orbital distributions in the LSMO valence band through a comparison between density functional theory calculations and experimental photoelectron spectra in a photon energy range from soft to hard x rays. We reveal a number of hidden contributions, arising specifically from La 5p, Mn 4s, and O 2s orbitals, considered negligible in previous analyses; our results demonstrate that all these contributions are significant for a correct description of the valence band of LSMO and of transition metal oxides in general., Published by APS, College Park, MD

Abstract

We investigate the chemical, electronic, and magnetic structure of the magnetocaloric LaFeCoSi compound with bulk and surface sensitive techniques. We put in evidence that the surface retains a soft ferromagnetic behavior at temperatures higher than the Curie temperature of the bulk due to the presence of Fe clusters at the surface only. This peculiar magnetic surface effect is attributed to the exchange interaction between the ferromagnetic Fe clusters located at the surface and the bulk magnetocaloric alloy, and it is used here to monitor the magnetic properties of the alloy itself. Abstract

A concentration of Manganese as high as 8% was successfully diluted into Zinc Oxide epitaxial films deposited by pulsed laser deposition. The films showed strong ferromagnetism with a large coercivity. Low temperature X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements indicated that all the Manganese ions substitute for Zinc sites of the wurtzite lattice in the valency of +2. Photoluminescence measurements excluded the presence of Zinc vacancies, as well as Zn interstitials. All the magnetic moments measured were to ascribe to the formation of bound magnetic polarons, with no other contribution due to Manganese-secondary phases or Zinc vacancy-mediated double exchange interaction. Abstract

In the rapidly growing field of spintronics, simultaneous control of electronic and magnetic properties is essential, and the perspective of building novel phases is directly linked to the control of tuning parameters, for example, thickness and doping. Looking at the relevant effects in interface-driven spintronics, the reduced symmetry at a surface and interface corresponds to a severe modification of the overlap of electron orbitals, that is, to a change of electron hybridization. Here we report a chemically and magnetically sensitive depth-dependent analysis of two paradigmatic systems, namely La1−xSrxMnO3 and (Ga,Mn)As. Supported by cluster calculations, we find a crossover between surface and bulk in the electron hybridization/correlation and we identify a spectroscopic fingerprint of bulk metallic character and ferromagnetism versus depth. The critical thickness and the gradient of hybridization are measured, setting an intrinsic limit of 3 and 10 unit cells from the surface, respectively, for (Ga,Mn)As and La1−xSrxMnO3, for fully restoring bulk properties., Surface versus bulk effects in electronic structure of spintronics materials are crucial to their applications but are yet well understood. Here the authors experimentally determine the critical thickness that defines the crossover of electron hybridization between surface and bulk for two prototype spintronics materials.

Abstract

The electronic structure of IrO2 has been investigated using hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density-functional theory. Excellent agreement is observed between theory and experiment. We show that the electronic structure of IrO2 involves crystal field splitting of the iridium 5d orbitals in a distorted octahedral field. The behavior of IrO2 closely follows the theoretical predictions of Goodenough for conductive rutile-structured oxides [J. B. Goodenough, J. Solid State Chem. 3, 490 (1971).

Abstract

We present the Is X-ray photoemission spectrum of alpha-Fe2O3 in comparison with its 2p photoemission spectrum. We show that in case of transition metal oxides, because the 1s core hole is not affected by core hole spin-orbit coupling and almost not affected by core-valence multiplet effects, the Fe 1s spectrum and the complementary charge transfer multiplet calculations allow for an accurate determination of the charge transfer parameters. The consistency of the obtained parameters for the 1s photoemission was confirmed with 2p photoemission calculations and compared to 2p experimental photoemission spectra. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Cation stoichiometry has been identified as a major key in establishing 2-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) in oxide heterostructures. Here, we discuss a 2DEG formation scenario in B-site deficient perovskite/perovskite heterostructures, which previously were predicted to show insulating behavior. We elaborate an ionic picture based on oxygen-vacancy-buffered B-site vacancy defects in the polar oxide layer that yields a continuous transition from 2DEG formation to less conducting interfaces to insulating interfaces with increasing B-site deficiency. Experimentally, a corresponding modulation of charge transfer across NdGaO3/SrTiO3 interfaces is inferred using hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and transport experiments. With increasing B-site deficiency, we observe a decrease of the interfacial Ti3+ core level contribution, indicating a reduced charge transfer at the interface. This result is corroborated by temperature-dependent transport measurements, revealing increased low temperature resistance, with a dominant influence of a reduced electron density in the Ga-depleted sample. We consider a redistribution of oxygen vacancies in the B-site deficient polar oxide layer to explain the alleviated interface reconstruction, adding a new perspective on potential built-up in polar-oxide thin films. Abstract

We demonstrate that the growth of Fe/(Ga,Mn)As heterointerfaces can be efficiently controlled by epitaxy and that robust ferromagnetism of the interfacial Mn atoms is induced at room temperature by the proximity effect. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and x-ray resonant reflectivity data, supported by theoretical calculations, were used to monitor both temperature and magnetic field dependence of the Mn magnetic moment in the semiconducting host. We identify distinct Mn populations, each of them with specific magnetic character.
