The paper reports the main contents of the guidelines developed in the framework of the project ANCHOR, acronym of Advanced Noise Control strategies in HarbOuR, which is a European Project funded as part of the announcement Life 2017.

Thin impervious layers, cloths or perforated plates are usually utilized with fibrous absorbing materials in order to avoid small particles, coming from deterioration over time or from flow abrasive effect, becoming dislodged and polluting the environment. These protective facings are to be carefully considered and analyzed, since they can affect the acoustical behavior of the “backing” material. This study addresses this issue through an experimental survey and a theoretical analysis using the Transfer Matrix Method (TMM). Experiments have been performed in the frequency range 160–2,500 Hz, analyzing the different behaviors due to multiple combinations of percentage of open area and air gap between perforated facing and absorbing material. Experimental data have shown a marked effect of the percentage of perforation, at least up to a threshold value of 20%, whereas the air gap slightly affected the acoustic behavior of the covered absorbing material. The TMM was applied to the tested faced absorbing system, and experimental and theoretical results were compared, showing the good accuracy of the model. Several geometrical configurations were then modeled through TMM and the possibility of using this method in order to assess the acoustic transparency of perforated metal plates was assessed.

Wastewaters treatment with biological processes is widely applied as a reliable solution to water pollution in urban areas. This process produces sludges and process waters. Sludges can be furtherly threated in dedicated plants to produce biogas, that can then be used to produce heat in specific plants, but it is sometimes simply burned using flares. A possible alternative use of biogas is the coupling with a CHP generator which can be used to produce electrical energy and heat. In the present paper, it is investigated the possible exploitation of the sludges produced by a wastewater treatment plant for feeding a sludge treatment plant, both in Genoa (Italy), in order to produce biogas. This work is based on the analysis of available data (2009-2018) provided by the sludge treatment plant technical staff, which showed strong variations in sludge flow rates as a result of the variation of incoming wastewater load. Since the available data is not always correlated with wastewater incoming flows and biogas production, starting from data provided for similar plants operating in Italy, it was possible to estimate a theoretical biogas production which was considered as the reference trend.

With the rapid improvement of the global economy, the role of energy has become even more vital in the 21st century. In this regard, energy storage/conversion devices have become a major, worldwide research focus. In response to this, we have prepared two-dimensional (2D)-hierarchical sheet-like ZnCo2O4 microstructures for supercapacitor applications using a simple hydrothermal method. The 2D-hierarchical sheet-like morphologies with large surface area and smaller thickness enhanced the contact area of active material with the electrolyte, which increased the utilization rate. We investigated the electrochemical performance of sheet-like ZnCo2O4 microstructures while using Cyclic voltammetry (CV), Galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), and Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis. The electrochemical results demonstrated that the ZnCo2O4 electrode possesses 16.13 mF cm−2 of areal capacitance at 10 µA cm−2 of current density and outstanding cycling performance (170% of capacitance is retained after 1000 cycles at 500 µA cm−2). The high areal capacitance and outstanding cycling performance due to the unique sheet-like morphology of the ZnCo2O4 electrode makes it an excellent candidate for supercapacitor applications.

The demand for eco-friendly renewable energy resources as energy storage and management devices is increased due to their high-power density and fast charge/discharge capacity. Recently, supercapacitors have fascinated due to their fast charge–discharge capability and high-power density along with safety. Herein, the authors present the synthesis of 3D-hierarchical peony-like ZnCo2O4 structures with 2D-nanoflakes by a hydrothermal method using polyvinylpyrrolidone. The reaction time was modified to obtain two samples (ZCO-6h and ZCO-12h) and the rest of the synthesis conditions were the same. The synthesized structures were systematically studied through various techniques: their crystalline characteristics were studied through XRD analysis, their morphologies were inspected through SEM and TEM, and the elemental distribution and oxidation states were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). ZCO-12h sample has a larger surface area (55.40 m2·g−1) and pore size (24.69 nm) than ZCO-6h, enabling high-speed transport of ions and electrons. The ZCO-12h electrode showed a high-specific capacitance of 421.05 F·g−1 (31.52 C·g−1) at 1 A·g−1 and excellent cycle performance as measured by electrochemical analysis. Moreover, the morphologic characteristics of the prepared hierarchical materials contributed significantly to the improvement of specific capacitance. The excellent capacitive outcomes recommend the 3D-ZnCo2O4 hierarchical peony-like structures composed of 2D-nanoflakes as promising materials for supercapacitors with high-performance.

Miconazole, a parenterally administered imidazole antifungal agent has been shown to produce responses in systemic fungal infections in man. Ketoconazole, an analogue, can be given by mouth. It is inhibitory in vitro at low concentrations to most fungi. Blood levels after oral administration to animals and man greatly exceed these inhibitory concentrations for several hours. The efficacy of this drug has been demonstrated in animal models. Initial clinical evaluation has produced responses to therapy with 200-400 mg/day in 13 of 16 evaluable patients with systemic and superficial fungal infections, involving 10 fungal pathogens. No toxicity has been noted to date in these human studies. Ketoconazole is a promising agent needing further extensive evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Ports are primary importance infrastructures when considering the transportation of people and goods across the planet. Two of the biggest issues linked to harbor areas are the pollutant emissions from moored ships, as well as the huge energy demand coming from ships and other activities that take place inside of the port boundaries. To tackle these challenges, the effort on the ship-side is to promote the transition to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) propulsion, while on the harbor-side is to implement electrical ship feeding. In general, using LNG for bunkering purposes implies its storage onshore using dedicated tanks. The regasification of LNG in situ can be exploited to cool down a water-brine flow (i.e. ethyl-alcohol and water). The cold brine can be used to increase the efficiency of a standard inverse cycle to produce cold (i.e. -30°C) used for refrigeration purposes inside ports. Then, the NG flow can be used to produce electrical energy with a standard turbogas cycle with energy recovery from flue gases. The generated electricity directly runs the standard inverse cycle with ethyl-alcohol and water brine to completely fulfill the energy demand for cold thermal power. The electricity still available is then used to supply the onboard systems of moored ships, or otherwise is sold to the users operating in the port. The flue gas coming from the turbogas plant can be used to provide both heating and process heat, through a dedicated heat exchanger and a natural gas boiler. The new envisaged plant can exploit all possible useful effects coming from the regasification process, helping to push towards a greener energy management system in harbor areas, through smart operative integration of the several available energy systems and the implementation of efficient energy smart grids.

The sustainability of anthropogenic activities at sea is recently gaining more and more attention. As regards shipping, emissions from ships into the environment of various nature (engine exhaust gases, anti-fouling paints leaching, ballast exchange, releases at sea of oil and other noxious liquid or solid cargoes, of sewage and of garbage) have been recognized as sources of pollution and therefore controlled and limited since a long time. The subject of noise emission has been identified only recently. To study the problem, the EU has funded, among others, the FP7 SILENV (Ship Innovative soLutions to rEduce Noise and Vibrations) project that run from 2010 to 2012. In the present work, the holistic approach followed within the project to characterize and control the ship as a source of noise is presented. Three types of noise emissions (in air, in water and inside the ship) are analyzed highlighting peculiarities and different strategies adopted to characterize the source, the impact on the receiver and the possible solutions to set limits to the ship emissions. The project outcome included a socalled “Green Label”: a set of new prenormative requirements defined for the three main areas mentioned above.

Ports are characterized by several complex operations. Accordingly, the analysis of noise results is complicated due to the presence in the same area of diverse sound from ships, trade and also from industrial and shipyards activities aswell as auxiliary services producing negative effects on natural ecosystem and the urban population. The ENPI CBC MED project Managing the Environmental Sustainability of Ports for a durable development (MESP) addressed the pollution reduction from port activities through the implementation of a multidisciplinary approach in air, noise andwater sectors, encompassing technological, regulatory and administrative solutions to ensure natural and urban sustainability and high level of life quality in surrounding territories. To prevent a heterogeneous development, the “status quo” of ports in Northern and Southern Shores of the Mediterranean Sea was analyzed and a guideline on methodologies, good practices and measurement assessment, adaptable and transferable in different port contexts was elaborated. To assess the procedures, validation tests have been carried out to different real cases. In noise sector pilot projects in the ports of Patras, Greece, and Tripoli, Lebanon, have been implemented. Due to the dissimilar scenarios, in terms of orography, facilities and activities, different noise mitigation actions and interventions were consequently accomplished.
